Fashion Model: Svartálfar Aredhel. Designer: Faith McGary Photographer: Jeremy Gibbs (RomanyWG) Location: Abandoned Chateau - France

What inspired you to take up fashion design as a career choice? Actually, my career started as a Telecommunications Engineer. I was an Inventor, and have 20 Patents in Mobile Technology and Social Media. Upon retirement, we were looking for ways to help fund IRS 501 (3) C dog rescues. I have been involved in Dog Rescue for 11 years. I determined that I would use the skills that I learned in High School during Home Economics class, and make Haute Couture Gowns. The proceeds of the gowns benefit Animal Rescue. For those that may not be aware of your work, what styles of fashion do you mainly create? Haute Couture, Victorian/Edwardian, 1930 Hollywood Classic. The main focus for you with selling your designs is to help raise money for Animal Rescue worldwide, and you’re currently funding the Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue and The Great Dane Rescue. What influenced your

decision to focus on animal rescue funding? Disposable incomes that allow for donations has steeply fallen off. People want something in return for a donation. My skills set in design and sewing allowed me to give a donor something in return. The Rescues are desperate for new ways to help pay vet bills and rehome these furry souls. Are there any other shelters you’re currently in the process of working with? We will be expanding to a Cat Rescue in the south of France sponsored by the Chateau de Gudanes. What advice would you give to anyone who may want to follow in your footsteps and set up a form of funding? It is a new and novel way to approach securing donations. The path is difficult in finding a model that will work. Get ready; it is an 10-hour a day job, and no pay… it will be worth it if you have a passion for rescue…

Are there any designs/themes that you would love to explore in the future? I will explore more Organic and non –conventional materials. What has been the main highlight of running your own business? Saving a soul that cannot speak for him or her self. These dogs come in damaged and abused… turning their health around and finding happy homes is beyond what your heart can imagine. Is there anyone in the world who you would love to see wearing your designs? We have a Chain Mail Dress that I would love to see Lady GaGa or Beyoncé wear. They are asked a million times per day or their stylists are, to please wear something for a cause… it would be difficult to approach them and just be another number or another person they can not help. We have just completed a modern remake of the 1930 gowns that Claudette Colbert wore in the movie Cleopatra. I would love to see Kim Kardashian wear Rebelicious magazine | 13

them, she reminds me of the beautiful Egyptian ruler. I have seen Kim with dogs, so I know that she has a heart for furry companions. Can you tell us about anything new that you’re currently working on? I am just completing an entire 1930 Carol Lombard Collection. It is a modern take on all of her major Hollywood movie gowns… We hope to photograph this collection soon. We have also ventured into men’s chainmail couture shirts, suspenders, and jewellery. What does the future hold for you and your company? I serve on the Board of the Aerte Living Arts Foundation. This foundation helps emerging artists. I hope to help other emerging designers, but show them you can also open your heart/soul to helping others… That should be everyone’s focus daily, “how can I help someone today?” A smile, a Starbucks, a nice hello, the stroke of a furry friend… there are so many ways to help all living beings in your daily circle.

anything goes apparel

What is Anything Goes Apparel all about and how did it begin? I was studying foundation art & design and a few months into the course I had some designs that I wanted to get printed but I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to print on or how I was going to market them. I sent a lot of emails, discussed ideas with friends and did some research. I soon became interested in the idea of starting my own brand and since I had a strong interest in tattoos, pin up girls and horror movies I thought that would be a good place to start. I completely scrapped my original designs and got to work on a new set that eventually led to a range of three designs and the start of Anything Goes Apparel in February 2012. What inspires you the most when it comes to figuring out

new designs? There are too many amazing artists to name but work by practitioners such as Gil Elvgren and Liz Clements inspire me to keep developing and improving my skills as an illustrator and designer. Their work is so beautifully crafted and has such a recognizable style to it.

What are your personal favourite items? Out of the new range, my favourite item has got to be the Skinny Dippin’ design, which is actually a reprint of a popular item from last year’s summer range. The design was inspired by the greatest B-movie of all time, Jaws, and I individually dip dye each t-shirt and vest by hand. I think it gives a really unique and personal touch to the product. In terms of design I feel that the ‘Queen Of Hearts’ is my strongest, as I worked outside of my

comfort zones and the design has translated really well onto the garments.

Over the past few years there has been a surge of people trying their hand at starting up their own clothing lines. What are your thoughts on this and how do you make sure that your brand stands out from the pack? In some ways it’s been great because it has created a community of independent brands and I’ve become good friends with a number of other brand owners but with everything, once the market is so heavily saturated, you get some people overlooking quality and not caring about the customers, which can cause some people to lose faith in smaller companies. Overall I think it’s been a great thing to happen for independently run businesses. To make Anything Goes stand out I really push to make the highest quality products possible and also have a DIY attitude to the brand by producing my own designs, spending hours finishing the garments with detailing on my little sewing machine, personally responding to all emails and managing all social networking accounts myself. Any tips for those wanting to get into the fashion industry? I’d just say to work hard and keep going no matter what because it will be hard work and there will be days where you want to give it all up, but it really all does pay off in the end.

Running your own business must have its high points as well as its low points? Definitely, I’ve had plenty of times when I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall but every cloud and all that! What has been the main highlight of running Anything Goes so far? I think the reaction the brand has received has been amazing, and the continuous support from so many people I have never even met is absolutely incredible. A massive highlight has definitely been getting to work with bands that I look up to such as Heart In Hand, Bastions, Real Friends, Heart Of A Coward and Sonic Boom Six. Is there anyone in the world who you would love to see wearing your clothing? There are so many people I’d love to see wearing something from Anything Goes, but I think if I had to narrow it down to one, right this second it would be Jesse Lacey from Brand New. What does the future hold for you and your brand? We’ve just released the brand new summer range, which I feel is a step up from anything I’ve done previously. I also have plenty of new ideas floating around and have already begun planning for the Autumn/Winter range, so expect lots more to come from Anything Goes Apparel as things are only just getting started! www.anythinggoesapparel.co.uk www.facebook.com/anythinggoesapparel www.instagram.com/anythinggoesapparel www.twitter.com/Anything_GoesUK anythinggoesapparel.tumblr.com Photography: J Moffatt Photography - www.jmoffatt.com Makeup: Emma Gruber - www.instagram.com/kittenmoustache Model: Lorraine Keiller - www.instagram.com/lorrainedakota Model: Adam Trump - www.instagram.com/adamjtrump Model: Erica Sousa - www.instagram.com/missericasousa

ETSY has sprung many a gem into the internet’s consciousness. One such a gem is bespoke underwear label Awkwardly Pretty. It offers a range of products from sports lingerie with a sci-fi edge to sexy separates with beautiful prints. Designer and creator Clare Sharpe is a genuine quirky chick and in no way a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She creates magic, so I wanted to get a closer look at the woman behind the brand... Words: Natasha Dujon Photography: Vicki Wheeler Photography 30 | Rebelicious magazine

Fashion

Introduce yourself! Who are you and what are you into? I’m Clare, founder of Awkwardly Pretty. I’m into rock music and being a little quirky (not the hipster quirky, just the generally slightly weird quirky). What attracted you to fashion and why lingerie in particular? Fashion is the grown up word for a kids dress up closet. A person can open their wardrobe and decide to be whoever they want to be that day. People who say appearances don’t matter are still choosing to look like they do, meaning they’re still into fashion. Lingerie is a uniquely beautiful part of fashion. It gives women the power to be sexy, cute, weird, and all without a single person on the outside knowing what she’s wearing underneath. A woman with stockings on has a different wiggle to a lady with tights on. I’ve seen some of your work, in particular-a certain r2d2 corset? (Amazing) What’s been your favourite custom piece to date? Why? Ah, the r2d2. That corset is an ongoing challenge. Tiny gems fall off here or there; it’s a high maintenance corset. My absolute favourite piece has to be a costume I’m designing at the moment. It’s vintage rainbow tie-dye silk, with tie-dye lace and silver plated fastenings for a performer across the water. I can’t show pictures until its debut in August, but so far I’m in love.

And you seem to be somewhat cyber inspired in your sports lingerie; I’m getting Fifth Element chic...? Am I horribly wrong? If so please describe your vibe? My sportswear collection did indeed take inspiration from Fifth element, but the key styling was featured around flattering and enhancing a figure. The print looks like camouflage, but up close it’s actually photos my Granddad took during the Korean War from his ship the HMS Glory. There are pictures of planes going overboard alongside a photograph of him and his friends at Christmas dinner. Why the name Awkwardly Pretty? Beautiful question! Awkwardly pretty; it’s a name of love. I’ve always been described as awkwardly pretty. I’m sure other girls have heard it too, “You’re pretty but in a weird way”. Awkwardly pretty is all about the girls that have always been a little different, so I make lingerie they feel suits them. No one should feel uncomfortable in sexy underwear, so awkwardly pretty turns sexy into quirky sexy. Regarding your own personal style, what are you inspired by? Where/how do you shop? My style? I’m told I’m alternative, but for me getting dressed involves finding things that people will say “that’s cool” to. I have a few pairs of leggings that if I wear I get stopped or pointed at and hear, “That’s so awesome.” Clothes

are a confidence booster when you’re gangly, flat chested and relatively plain everywhere else. But I rock what I’ve got. It’s all online shopping for me; I cannot be bothered going clothes shopping. Click; confirm order; posted - easy! Does music inspire you? If so whose and how? Music inspires everything. An artist listens to CDs/ radio whilst painting. Same with me, I have XFM or my iPod plugged in to get a feel. Music, especially during festival season, makes lingerie fashion change. Girls want people at the festival to see how individual they are, and in hot weather bikinis and harnesses become a huge hit. I’m virtually sold out of skull print harness bras, it’s crazy! Are you influenced by high street trends? If so how, if not why? I don’t spend much time on the high street. I’m really intrigued by trends happening online. As much as we mock hipsters, they’ve done something crazy to the way fashion works. They’ve stopped the runway’s monogamy on trend setting. Hipsters have allowed street fashion to explode. We now have more power to wear whatever and not be told we’re out of season.

Rebelicious magazine | 31

Fashion You mentioned festival season; aside from the skull harness bras, are there any other pieces you would recommend from your collection? Festival season is great, everyone gets a little more, well, revealing (the heat it does strange things to the mind). Well, this week I’ve been working on a very bohemian girl with rainbows but still with the awkwardly pretty look; which is bold strapping and contrasting materials. The crop top was going to be whole mesh, but it looked way, way too girly/ commercial; and everyone who shops from awkwardly pretty wants unique and a little more out there. Ideally what direction would you like to take Awkwardly Pretty? I think awkwardly pretty will always remain my baby! I don’t want it to become this huge commercial monster that doesn’t care what the lady wants. Made to order bespoke pieces - that’s where I see it happening for a long, long time. Everyone deserves something a little special, made just for them, to their sizes. But I’d like a little shop so that I can personally measure them. I’ve had a few problems recently with people measuring themselves and removing 2 inches, “I’m going on a summer diet”. Then complaining it doesn’t fit which is very upsetting for me, as I pattern cut and make everything by hand. For anyone who doesn’t know you, who are White Clouds & Gunfire and what is your role within the band? White Clouds & Gunfire are a 5-piece alternative rock band from Peterborough. I’m the singer and in charge of crowd control. When we first started I used to play synths and just do backing vocals, but when our original lead singer left, I got asked if I wanted to do lead vocals. How would you describe your fashion style? Casual, carefree and comfortable, with a lot of black. I have a few designer pieces in my wardrobe that I like to mix in with my high street purchases. Do you think that being the lead singer in a band has an impact on the way you dress? I like to make an effort, especially if there’s a camera around. But generally I just wear what’s comfortable and what I feel comfortable in. I’ve also learnt that skirts and dresses are generally a no go area. I have a stage riser for when we perform, and I’m not always in the mood for flashing. What does your gig outfit normally consist of? Converse and black skinny jeans.

How do you decide what to wear for video shoots, is it a tough decision? It depends what kind of video we’re shooting. Up until now I’ve stuck to the tried and tested black skinny jeans, but for our last video, we did a spoof of the movie Dodgeball. I got the boys and I custom basketball jerseys and I got a pair of custom Nike high tops especially for the occasion. Who are your style icons and why? I love Gwen Stefani for being flawless and having the balls to put herself out there when it comes to fashion. I wish I had the guts to wear the outfits she does. I also love the Olsen twins. Comfortable & stylish, with lots of layering pieces and the odd vintage item. What piece of clothing/accessory can you never leave the house without? Clean underwear and my watch. What are your top 5 brands/ stores? I do a lot of shopping online on Asos & Urban Outfitters. I love All Saints, Zara, and I have an unhealthy addiction to the jewellery from The Great Frog. Are there any independent/ upcoming designers you think we should check out? I’ve only just found these guys, but you have to check out a brand called Jump From Paper. They create 2D bags that look like they’re from a cartoon. I have a bag on back order that I can’t wait to get my hands on!

Going out - flats or heels? Going out, out - heels, with a spare pair of flats in my bag. Generally though it’s flats - I like to embrace my smallness. Are there any items of clothing you’d love to wear, but don’t have the confidence to? Galaxy leggings they look awesome, but I can’t help but feel dumpy in them. Do you have any fashion obsessions? (shoes, clothes, jewellery etc?) Yes - skulls - if it has a skull on it, I will probably wear it. That’s not just for clothing; my house is covered in them. If you could give anyone fashion advice what would it be? Be yourself. Don’t feel like you have to follow the latest trends if you don’t want to. Have a staple supply of basics that will last you from season to season......... and don’t wear onesies out in public. If we looked into your wardrobe what would we find? Lots of items I love but have never worn. www.facebook.com/wcagf

How did your journey into alternative modelling begin? At about 13, me and my friends started experimenting with “photoshoots”, we made our own backgrounds and dressed up as like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera! As we got older we kept this hobby, but started being more into fantasy and more creative style shoots. I bought my first Nikon camera when I was 18 and only did shoots with friends until I moved to London 5 years ago and started working with other photographers. Things escalated over here and I started making it into a career! The majority of your photoshoots have a very dark, attitude-filled, sometimes quite sinister theme. What is it that draws you to the darker side of alternative fashion and photography? I think it’s something to do with the power of it all, dark themes and characters always appear 56 | Rebelicious magazine

more badass, dangerous and punchy in all media. Villains always have the coolest styling and outfits and there’s just something satisfying with evil... I’m not anywhere near dark, evil and sinister as a person, very much the opposite, but I have always been crazy about acting. What are some of your favourite horror movies? The style varies... House of 1000 Corpses, Faust, Antichrist, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Blair Witch Project, The Crow… Who is your favourite horror movie character? I really like Shuna Sassi in Nightbreed, but the most recent favorite is Marie Laveau in American Horror Story: Coven, she is badass! On the other side of the spectrum, your featured photoshoot is very bright and bubbly, very different to a lot of your previous work!

What inspired you to create such a vibrant shoot? As much as I love the black, I do love the girly bright pink as well! It’s just not the colours I normally dress in. I would never limit myself to stick to only one style of modeling, as I mentioned before I love acting and that was always the most fun bit for me, that I get to transform into different characters and let them live for eternity in a photo. In this instance... I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie wooorld! (I still have my beloved Barbie dolls boxed up in the attic!) Are there any themes that you would like to explore within your modeling that you haven’t had the chance to do yet? I’d love to do more couple shoots. Nothing too sleazy, more moody and creative. It’s definitely an area that I haven’t explored yet and that I haven’t seen a lot of in the alternative scene.

How would you describe your own personal style? Are there any makeup/beauty products that you can’t live without? Chameleon, but instead of camouflage to my surrounding I do the opposite. And I always change my appearance... There are just too many cool styles out there to only stick to one. I definitely can’t live without Crazy Colour hair dyes, they’re the best. And to go with that Osmo’s hair products… The reason my hair can put up with all the chemicals hah! 60 | rebelicious magazine

As well as modelling, you’re also a part of the fire troupe Pyrohex. How did that come up and what have been some of your favourite experiences so far? Pyrohex wasn’t exactly a planned thing; we got together a bunch of friends who enjoyed fire-dancing and put together a one-off performance for a club night in London. After getting a huge response to it we decided to really go for it, so we formed Pyrohex. We’ve only been together for a year and performed at Download Festival and

Hellfest this year, which have been the most amazing experiences ever! Is there anyone in particular that you would love to collaborate with one day? Am I allowed to say Tank Girl? She’s my role-model. We’d get up to some crazy shit together! What can we expect from you during the rest of 2014? I’m hoping to do another US modeling tour this winter, other than that I’m working hard on my clothing

company Heavenly Inferno and am also about to release a new music project. Stay tuned! Finally is there anything that you would like to say to our readers? Hey you‌ This very day is the first day of the rest of your life. Make it count! www.facebook.com/ shellydinferno twitter.com/ShellydInferno

exposed Can you tell us about the journey you took to become a model? It’s all thanks to my mum really. I have always wanted to model and my mum told me about a casting call for The Leeds Fashion Show ‘Dress Me Beautiful’ last year that she had seen. The day of the casting, I finished work and started walking home thinking there was no point going, as I wouldn’t have a chance. Halfway home I thought screw it, everything is worth a try, I rang my mum and she told me to ‘work it’ and gave me the confidence that I needed. A couple of weeks later, I got a text saying I had been successful and they wanted me as a runway model! I have had so many amazing opportunities since being part of the fashion show and if my mum hadn’t have told me I could do it, I probably wouldn’t be a part of this magazine right now! Cheers mumma, you’re ace! What are your favourtie styles/themes/ concepts to shoot? I have enjoyed everything that I have had the opportunity to do. I have always had a soft spot for pin-up/vintage shoots, with rad Cadillac’s, retro cars and trucks! Runway shows will always be a favourite of mine, the adrenaline you get when you’re on the runway is insane; you get your hair and makeup done and wear some beautiful outfits. I’ve met some lovely models when doing fashion shows and behind the scenes is always a laugh. I have been apart of many charity runway shows and knowing it’s for a good cause makes it even more enjoyable! Are there any styles/themes that you would love to explore in the future? An under water shoot is something I have ALWAYS wanted to do; it looks very surreal and innovative. There is something totally magical about it! There are also so many amazing latex companies out there, I would love to model their designs, latex is perfectly made to fit the shape of your body and every woman’s body should be shown off! How would you describe your own personal style? Very much who I am, I have always loved fashion and how a person’s individual style and concept of fashion makes them that bit different to others. I have always thought of myself as a rock chick when I was younger and I still have that side to me. I do like my trainers these days, anything comfy on my days off, skinny jeans, over sized T-shirts and bomber jackets, but I always have a pair of very high platform boots on for a night out, I like to call them my ‘KISS boots’.

“if you have the confidence to be in front of a camera, crack on! everyone has something beautiful to portray in a photoshoot.”

How has being a model affected your life so far? It is a lot more fun and has given me tons more confidence within myself. I get to work with some of my best friends who are photographers on a regular basis. I have met some lovely people and it excites the hell out of me to think what will come next. This year has been an amazing year for my modelling career and it can only get better!

I also run a clothing company with my partner called ‘Phillycheesesteak’ (www. phillycheesesteakapparel.bigcartel.com). This is something that we are building on at the minute; there is no greater satisfaction than seeing someone wearing one of your shirts! I also spend as much time with my family and friends as I can, they are a massive part of my world and it is important to show them how much you care.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming an alternative model? Give it a go, what do you have to lose? If you have the confidence to be in front of a camera, crack on! Oh and be yourself, never forget who you are and your principles and morals! Everyone has something beautiful to portray in a photoshoot.

If you had the opportunity to collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? Wow, there are a few; Gina Harrison is an absolute babe, DEM LIPS!! Seriously, she is gorgeous and I would swoon if I ever had the chance to model with her. Rankin is a legend! Shannon Brooke is an amazing pin up photographer; she is the girl to go to for that style! The local scene in and around Leeds is awesome for models/photographers and it would be a privilege to work with any of them. Daryl Dixon from the Walking Dead (Norman Reedus) wouldn’t go a miss, but I would love to be a part of any

Outside of the modelling world, what do you get up to? I’m a busy bee; I work at Philips Hair Academy as a stylist (hair slayer) and Recruitment Coordinator, which I love and work with an amazing, one of a kind team! 80 | Rebelicious magazine

independent clothing companies out there, it takes a lot to build something like that up and I would like to help anyone reach their dreams. What do you hope to achieve in your modelling career in the future? I would like to be on the front cover of a magazine, this is something I have always set as a goal for myself. I would like to take part in as many runway shows as I can possibly do; I would love to be a part of The Great British Tattoo Show Runway. I try taking life one step at a time and enjoy every second of it, I work hard and I hope it will pay off. MWAH!

exposed outdoor concepts in the future; lot’s of natural elements and flowers. The more creative, the better. I’ve also seen some incredible underwater images recently. I wouldn’t mind trying that. Of course I still need to do a series of Bettie Page styled photos and pay tribute to my idol. Modelling involves having a lot of confidence in front of the camera, but does this confidence always transfer away from the lens too? I consider myself a confident person in most areas of my life. I’ve never really suffered from a lack of confidence. Strangely enough, modeling is one of the things I’m most self conscious about. To put myself out there as a model was hard for me. I’m growing all the time and becoming more comfortable in front of the camera. It’s really one of the few times I ever feel shy. Having worked with some exceptional photographers has really helped me gain that much needed confidence.

“I’ve always been in love with bettie page. she is my absolute inspiration when it comes to modelling.” What inspired you to become a model? My start into modeling was pinup. I’ve always been in love with the works of Bettie Page. She is my absolute inspiration when it comes to modeling. If it weren’t for her the industry as we know it wouldn’t exist. What are your favourite styles/ themes/concepts to shoot? Classic pinup is something I have always loved. Because it was also my start into modeling, pinup has been the main focus of what photographers ask me to shoot. One of my favorite concepts

however was a series of photos on a restored carousel shot by the amazing Hanah Reed. I really want to do more location shoots like that. Are there any styles/themes that you would love to explore in the future? Now that I’ve gotten my carousel dream shoot out of the way, I would love to add a castle shoot to the list. I’m also a huge fan of art deco. There’s a period styled art deco house that we are hoping to get access to for an upcoming shoot late this summer. I would also love to do some

For the featured photoshoot, you got to work with Jellyfish Jones. What was that experience like? I am constantly amazed by the work of Jellyfish Jones, so of course I was so nervous when I had the opportunity to work with her. She really put me at ease and made it fun. This set happened to be our favorite. I have a more edgy personality, and I think she picked up on that. We decided to go less pinup and more punk. She has so many wonderful visions. We had three very different looks for my shoot with her. I loved how she got me out of my box and nothing was very pinup looking. Rebelicious magazine | 83

exposed Has anything out of the ordinary ever happened during a photoshoot? I wouldn’t say out of the ordinary, but the funniest however was the carousel themed shoot I did with Hanah Reed. I had thigh high ballerina fetish boots on with a tutu and corset. It was absolutely impossible to move in those boots and I couldn’t get on the carousel rabbit by myself. We were laughing so hard. It had to have looked ridiculous with Hanah and her assistant trying to hoist me up on that thing. The photo’s turned out amazing however. We had so much fun. How has being a model affected your life so far? I can’t say it has had a huge effect yet in my life. I have met some wonderful people through modeling. I love all the creative energy that comes from collaborating. It’s pretty inspiring.

Is there anyone that you would like to collaborate with one day? YellowBubbles and Spoiled Cherry! They make magic happen. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming an alternative model? It’s important to find a professional and reputable photographer you are comfortable with. I’ve been so fortunate to have worked with such talented photographers, like Jellyfish Jones. It really sets the bar high on professionalism and quality. It’s made me a better model and I’ve grown so much with my posing because of it. There are a lot of people out there with a camera, but not all of them are photographers. You will get so much more out of working with someone experienced.

Photographer’s Note* “In the first look, the model is wearing an authentic Purple Heart medal from WWII which was passed down to me (the photographer) from my late Grandmother, who’s first husband died in the Navy during WWII. His ship was on the perimeter of the battle for Okinawa when a kamikaze pilot struck it, killing him instantly and sinking the ship. Both looks were photographed on an authentic Battleship from that same war. Shooting at this location took quite a bit of negotiation on my part but eventually they allowed it because of the family/war history.” Tristan Carkeet

exposed Miss Jellyfish Jones, welcome to Rebelicious! How are you doing? Fantastic! Really fantastic. You’re an alternative photographer and also a model. What influenced you to stand on both sides of the lens instead of choosing just the one to focus on? I don’t really know. I never started either of them with a full intent to do one or the other or any at all. I only started modeling as a favor to a friend for a little store she had, and photography came later down the road. Do you find that your photography helps to inspire your modelling work (concepts, locations etc) and vice versa? Oh yes, of course. Both sides help me with the other very much. Are there any photographic styles/themes that you haven’t tried yet, but would love to have a go at in the future? YES!! My brain spills over with them... but I try to keep most of my upcoming themes and ideas secret. I’ve had far too many stolen because of my Big fat mouth! What have been some of your favourite experiences since becoming a photographer? I’d have to say the people. I’ve met some really amazing people through this industry that have become what I can only see as being life long friends. People I certainly wouldn’t have a chance to meet otherwise, so for that alone I’m really thankful that life lead me here.

exposed Do you have any pre-shoot rituals? No, I work very organically... as Julia Roberts once said, “I’m a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl!” What’s the funniest thing to happen during a shoot? Oh, goodness… I’m not sure... I have a habit of trying to make things fun. There is always laughter when I’m working.... but funniest? I’d say when my good friend Kodi Fujii and I were making our “grandma” set happen. There were a few moments that made us cry laughing. We laughed far into the next day, but then again that’s the love of working with people that are dear close friends. There are things you can do and say that just wouldn’t fly on a professional level. How has being a photographer and model affected your life so far? Monetarily, it’s been amazing. Being able to stay home with my family and work is awesome. Seeing new

places is always rad, but as far as it changing my life, I guess it hasn’t... I will always just be my same ol’ super dork self with my same ol’ dork childhood friends. If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would you pick and why them? ANYONE IN THE WORLD? Dang, that’s like a serious question. I’d model for Tim Walker, just to have the chance to see him work. With the photography industry becoming even more saturated as the months go by, how do you make sure that your work stands out from the pack? HARD. Haha. I have to strive to give my clientele something that most others can’t, and for me that’s that I shoot a different style. I offer a different style of “styling” and every day I try to think of something that will be bigger and badder than the last.

What advice would you give to any models wanting to work with you in the future? Don’t message me and ask me if I want to shoot you for free. Please. This is my only job and I have a son in private school. If you would like to book a session, I shoot any and everyone. My rates are more reasonable than most would think and I offer great model discounts. BOOK a session. Finally, what are you looking forward to during the rest of 2014? EVERYTHING. The ups, the downs, everything that is going to make this human experience just what it is supposed to be. www.facebook.com/ JellyfishJonesPhotography

exposed turning to Ben and Jerrys. Oops! What have been some of your most memorable photoshoots? I usually remember the ones where I have been cold out on location, shivering and trying to stop my teeth chattering whilst I shoot, hoping I don’t look like a rabbit haha! When I went to shoot with Jason Perkins, it was just before Christmas and there was a severe weather warning and I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it home. It was worth it! Other than modelling, what else do you get up to? I have a little girl who I adore, so she takes up most of my time. Modelling is a luxury I squeeze in amongst my job, family life, lots of housework and the occasional trip to the gym. I think it’s important as a mum to be a good role model and I hope my daughter will be proud of me one day. How has being a model affected your life so far? I feel modelling has given me a lot of confidence in front of the camera and in my personal day-today life. I feel more motivated to take care of myself, especially because it shows on camera if you don’t. It has also affected my bank balance because I’m constantly seeing items I want to use on shoots.

What inspired you to become a model? My friend introduced me to a photographer and it just went from there really. I also had a couple of photographer contacts on my Facebook. I got a few shoots under my belt, set up a portfolio and I’ve had fun ever since. What are your favourite styles/ themes/concepts to shoot? I would say that so far most of what I have shot has been lingerie/alternative fashion based, which I have loved. But I would like to push myself further as a model and start doing shoots that tell a story and have deeper emotions behind them. Are there any styles/themes that you would love to explore in the future? I would love to explore

the more editorial side of fashion photography. I always get excited over the models that look like fantasy princesses. I also really like the darker, gothic side of modelling. I’m a big horror fan so I would love to get bloodied up with some corn syrup and scare some locals. Modelling involves having a lot of confidence in front of the camera, but does this confidence always transfer away from the lens too? I’ve always been loud and bubbly, but I spent a lot of time growing up not feeling confident in my own skin and it’s nice to finally be comfortable. So yes, most of time I’m happy being me. But everybody has a day where they don’t feel their best and I usually end up

Is there anyone that you would like to collaborate with one day? Ooo gosh, that’s a hard one. I really admire the photography of Amanda Diaz and Emily Soto. Their work is amazing. They don’t live in the UK but if I ever got the chance to be lucky enough to work with them that would make my year. What do you hope to achieve in your modelling career in the future? All I aim for is to see more improvement in myself. I want to see my poses improving and showing that I can be versatile as a model. I feel very lucky and grateful to have got as far as I have within my first year of pursuing this, so anything that happens from now on is a bonus! Instagram @esther_terrestrial88

miss rosie lea What inspired you to become a model? I’ve found the glamour and sophistication of old Hollywood Starlets inspiring since I was a little girl and I’ve always had a deep appreciation of female beauty. But to be honest, I’d never planned to be a model; it was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. Back in February I was working at my first Vintage Fair and decided to have a look around at the stalls during my break. That’s when Barbara at ‘Maison de Cantern’ (a milliner and vintage clothing trader) grabbed me, put 5 or 6 different hats on me and took a load of photographs! She needed to know how to credit me and

so asked me for my Pin Up name. So that night I chose a name, set up a modelling page and became Miss Rosie Lea! I had my first shoot 2 weeks later and the response since then has been amazing. What are your favourite styles/ themes/concepts to shoot? I am exclusively a vintage model. My true passion lies in the 1940’s/50’s and I’m known in my town for dressing in that style every day, even to pick up a bottle of milk! I try not to limit myself to the pin-up look however and I’ll shoot anything themed 1920’s-1970’s. I love the antique periods too; think Victorian, Edwardian etc. Variety is very important to me and so I love to try new things. Are there any styles or themes that you would love to explore in the future? I love to read and my degree is in English Literature so the project I have in mind at the moment is ‘Great Works of Literature from the Romantic Era’; I’m excited to pay homage to many of the great 18th and 19th century tragic literary heroines (although Dorian Gray could be an interesting alternative.) I already have ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘Tess of the D’Urbevilles’ booked.

The featured photoshoot has a very summery feel to it. What would you say is your favourite thing about summertime? I love being able to go out for days with my family. There are so many beautiful spots to explore local to us and there’s nothing better than laughing out in the sunshine. Modelling involves having a lot of confidence in front of the camera, but does this confidence always transfer away from the lens too? Achieving that sense of security is always a work in progress. Although I think that if you’re secure with the person you are inside that confidence will transfer into your everyday life. With so many trying to break into the industry, what is your personal view on the current alternative modelling scene? If you want to become part of the industry I say go for it! It can be unnerving and frustrating at times but it’s also incredibly fun, exciting, and creative! I think if you have something new and different to offer (whether it’s your look, your style or your mind-set) you’ll be more than welcome. How has being a model affected your life so far? In my everyday life I’m a stay at home mum for my two year old, so I’ve found that modelling has allowed me to experience new things that I wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to try. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting lots of talented, lovely people through my work and I’ve received amazing support from my wonderful followers on social networking sites who are always eager to see what I’m going to do next. I’m really thankful for that.

Is there anyone that you would like to collaborate with one day? There is so much amazing talent on the scene at the moment. I’d love to collaborate with ‘Doll House Photography’ and ‘My Boudoir Photography’ (although on something more tame than they’re used to haha). Both are so talented and their work is always pure art. I’d also love to work with the amazing reproduction clothing companies in the UK. I particularly love British Retro, 20th Century Foxy, Collectif Clothing, and (my personal favourite) Vivien of Holloway. Their clothes make me feel so amazing and confident and I’d love to help other women feel the same. What does the future hold for you? Who knows? The last four months have been such an unexpected whirlwind and I’ve loved just going with the flow. I would like to be published lots more and a front cover at some point would be fabulous! Modeling for other clothing companies such as those mentioned above is another aspiration of mine. But I’m content at the moment to just keep working and see where it all leads me. www.facebook.com/missrosielea www.purpleport.com/portfolio/missrosielea

When I was younger I dreamt of becoming…

Wednesday Adams. She was my role model growing up. She just seemed so badass and had a wicked family. Goth life forever.

I never leave the house without…

My mobile phone and my eyebrows! I have ridiculously blonde hair naturally so my brows are transparent with out a little touch up!

The coolest thing I currently own is…

I’d probably say the drum stick I caught from Trivium at Download Festival in June. Loved the band for ages so it was pretty darn cool to catch it!

If I could be someone else for a day, I would choose to be…

The wonderful lady who runs Tea Cake. She’s the most fantastic illustrator I have ever met and I’d kill to be as good as her just for a day. Her eye to detail makes me very envious! Her work is just so Bitchin’. Also she’s a total babe, so it would be nice to be as hot as her too!

If I had to take 3 items on a desert island with me, I would take… My laptop for endless Netflix binges. Factor 50 suncream as I’m as pale as Casper and will burn as red as a lobster. And Khal Drogo. C’mon, a girl’s got needs!

The last film I saw was…

Snatch! I have no idea how I have only just seen it. New favourite movie! “Whys there a gun in ya trousers Tommy?” “It’s for Protection.” “Protection from what?” “Ze Germans?!”

My favourite body part is…

Either my natural trouty pout lips or my eyes. It’s weird, you can tell what mood I’m in by how light my eyes are. If they’re really light I’m happy, if they go really dark… beware!

One random fact about myself is… I have no cartilage in my nose. So if I was to push my face on a window, it’ll flatten down completely to my face!

If I had the choice to be either a superhero or a villain, I would choose to be… I’d probably choose to be the villain. They always have the most kick ass of costumes and are normally just misunderstood people!

If I could time-travel, I would travel to…

The late 80’s/early 90’s. When rock was real and grunge was a way of life. To be able to see Nirvana and Pearl Jam in their absolute prime would be just fracking incredible.
