Hello it’s me again! I thought I should start this by re-introducing myself to you guys as it has been a long time since I have written for Rebelicious. My name is Ruby True and I am a model, performer and general oddball that has been doing this for a long time! I have been published on the cover of Bizarre Mag twice and was one of the first Rebelicious cover models! My career has allowed me to travel all over the world and meet some amazing people on my way. Baring this in mind, I recently almost quit everything as the whole industry has changed so much since I first started out. Its popularity has grown, and become so dense with models that it started to become hard for me to enjoy it anymore. I also have been going through some family personal issues, which meant I would rather be spending time by their side. Seeing a family member sick put a lot into perspective for me, and has given me a new lease of life when it comes to my career, and dare I say it wisdom. Wisdom for what really is important in life. So before I mush on anymore with the hippy wisdom crap, let me tell you what I have been up to the last two months with my new positive outlook on life!
I have been extremely busy throughout July and August, and I have so many things to tell you guys about! Firstly, Natty Dreadz became my sponsor (www.nattydreadz. co.uk). She is such an awesome lady, who made the set of dreadlocks I am sporting in my most recent photo shoots. She spends a lot of time on them to make sure they look as natural as possible. I am so excited to work with her more in the near future. During July I rolled about on a beach shooting with Photogun photography (www.facebook.com/ PhotoGunPhotography) which totally filled my dreads with sand. No kidding! I shook a small pile of sand out my hair that I had to sweep up!

ruby true Back home safe from Newcastle, I have started planning my Outfits for Comic con and already have booked my tickets for MCM Comic Con (www.mcmcomiccon.com/london/) and London Film & Comic Con (www.londonfilmandcomiccon.com) I will slowly be posting progress updates of my cosplay on my Instagram @ Ruby_True
I also shot a woodland theme shoot with the awesome Scott Chalmers.( www.scottchalmers.co.uk). I received a text from Gemma Edwards (www.gemmaedwardsphoto. com) saying she had had cancelations, and could I get to London right away for a shoot. Of course I jumped on a train! Gemma is always fully booked, and I have been dying to shoot a Suicide Girls set with her for months.
he jetted off to Canada to study, and it was great fun as you can see!
I recently travelled to Newcastle with Dolly Diamond for a shoot with Elite mag and Suicide girls. We spent 8 hours in a car going even crazier than usual, whilst Dolly attempted to make loom bands and I laughed hyper off of service station starbucks.
Our set comes out in December, so if you are a member I would love your support on the site! suicidegirls.com/members/RubyTrue/ I kick started August with an awesome, fun shoot with Jamie T photography (www.jamietphotography.co.uk). The shoot was in Brighton on Pride day. I spent it surrounded by great friends and models, Dolly diamond, Candy Valentina, Poppy thorn and Vanessa Vice. This was Jamie’s last shoot before
So basically that’s my last month or so wrapped up in a short version for you guys. I have been getting back in to the gym, making my own juices, and practicing on my aerial hoop. Oh yeah, I also organised my local battle of the bands. It has been pretty hectic all couple of months all in all. If you have a topic or a subject you would like me to write about, send it in to Rebelicious. I look forward to writing more ramblings for you! One last thing before I leave you. I wanted to share my friends blog with you. You may have already seen it on your Facebook newsfeed, and I think it is important for all women to read and realise that they do have a voice. In 2011 a model friend of mine, Roswell Ivory wrote a blog and named a man called Shaun Clough. After having an uncomfortable shoot with him, filled with inappropriate questions she wanted to share her experience. You can read it here - http://roswellivory. wordpress.com/2011/08/02/theimportance-of-references/ Since she wrote that blog, many other brave women have come forward and named Shaun. Unfortunately some women had worse experiences with him then Roswell. A case has now been built against him, and you can read the full info here on Roswell’s blog - (http:// roswellivory.wordpress.com/2014/07/29/ peacocks-swansong/). I hope this story can bring some strength and inspiration to other women, and also help models to be safe whilst working. I have huge respect for Roswell, and all the other women involved.

apparel What inspired/influenced you to start Sinned Apparel? I was inspired to start Sinned Apparel as I’ve always wanted to have my own clothing brand. I wanted to create a style that not everyone has seen and with the designs I had in mind, I worked closely with a designer from Korea and eventually came up with some really cool images. What inspires you the most when it comes to creating new designs? Definitely with our latest t-shirt designs I was inspired by wildlife and Native American Indians. I loved how the two mixed so naturally together and created such a solid image/design. Are there any designs/themes that you would love to explore in the future? I would like to get more involved with the garments themselves, creating new cuts of clothing and textures which will set us apart from other independent clothing lines. There are so many fantastic brands available. Aside from the clothing and styles produced for Sinned, are there any other fashion styles/ trends that you’re currently a fan of? I don’t think you can go wrong with some original Vans, skinny jeans and an over sized T-shirt.

Are there any styles you’re not so fond of? There’s not a style I’m not fond of. I believe there’s a gap for every style no matter how boring or wacky it is! But I don’t like things too mismatched. What has been the main highlight of running Sinned so far? It’s been tough from the offset and I would say one of the main highlights would be selling our very first top on the day we went live. It was a great feeling to know that clothing that I designed was liked by others around the world. We have gone on to sell to many countries from around the world and I would like to say thank you to those who have supported Sinned Apparel. Can you tell us about any new designs you’re currently working on? We love the cropped cage tops, we’re definitely working on that for next summer. And underwear, you can never have too many wacky pants! Is there anyone in the world who you would love to see wearing your clothing? This is a tough one, I think Hayley Williams from Paramore would rock our Sinner vest! Also Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters to be wearing our Lone Wolf T-shirt. What does the future hold for you and your brand? I hope it holds a new beginning, a place where I can go to and be proud of. We are about to launch our products into shops and I am really excited about this, so who knows what Sinned Apparel will become.

What inspired you to take up photography? My grandfather bought me a point-and-shoot camera when I was fourteen; I was fascinated with finding the perfect angles and lighting for flowers, still life and animals. I wasn’t ready to work with strangers just yet, but whenever a friend of mine dressed up we would do a mock shoot and eventually it lead to structured
sessions with more direction and finetuning my photographer eyes. Many of my friends went on to become working models from practicing with me, and it felt like I was giving these people a gift of confidence by providing quality portraits. I was thrilled to see a career develop for others that also benefited my goals and allowed my creativity to be expressed.

What inspires you the most when it comes to thinking of new concepts to shoot? I am among thousands of artists with their head in the clouds, and much of my work comes from an otherworldly perspective. My interest in the ethereal and mythical greatly surpasses my love of natural beauty; I always strive for a flare of fantasy in my work, and I find that makes sessions much more fun for my models as well as myself! Are there any photographic styles/themes that you haven’t tried yet, but would love to have a go at in the future? I would love to do underwater sessions! I have a very exciting shoot with Nune Hov Couture coming up in October where
her chainmail dresses will be featured on professional mermaid models in a viewing pool - just thinking about the results is invigorating! Photographers should always try new things like these, not only to have a diverse portfolio but for experience with the creative teams as well. Can you tell us a bit about what inspired the featured photoshoot with Nune? Nune wanted to have some artwork that is inspired by her clothing line being released later this year - the clothing is not featured here, but it accents her theme of glamour and underwater fantasy and will be used as filler art for her web site and blog when the line is released. rebelicious magazine | 45
exposed If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would you pick and why them? Gemma Ward! She is hands-down my favorite supermodel. Her features are exactly what I would picture a mermaid to have - in fact, she played one of the mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides! With the photography industry becoming even more saturated as the months go by, how do you make sure that your work stands out from the pack? I like to think that I have a signature style that is soft and romantic, without being cliché and adhering to the rules of high fashion. I always wondered how I can skim through much of today’s style industry and not even bat an eye - it’s because it all has this plastic/shiny/artificial look with some exotic makeup and jewelry as the only distinction from other photographer’s work in the same genre. I treasure the imperfections in my work - the fantasy is unique, and the model is an individual; beauty is not produced in a factory, and I think it’s better to hold on to some of the organic aspects of the original photo!
What have been some of your favourite experiences since becoming a photographer? Actually, Nune is responsible for my favorite experiences! She works with the Northwest Networking Umbrella, which is a group designed for promotion and advertisement in the area for artists and models in the fashion and entertainment industry. After attending a Nune Hov Couture runway show I got to meet and photograph the Blue Lotus
46 | Rebelicious magazine
Dance Crew, which is comprised of professional belly dancers. I got to see dozens of handmade costumes up close while they performed for my shoot. One of the girls continued working with me over the years and has become a favorite client of mine! Other than that, working with Nune has been such a pleasure... She is an incredible onewoman team! She always comes more than prepared and I always leave with incredible photos for my portfolio.
Finally is there anything that you would like to say to our readers? My dream as a photographer is to encourage others to see their dreams are achievable. I got where I am because I took a chance, faked my confidence, and eventually obtained it and built a career with my own two hands and the help of stunning and vibrant people. All it really takes is believing that it is possible, and every baby step that you take gets you miles farther than those afraid to even stand up to start their journey. Listen to other artists, what got them further and held them back. Most importantly, create your own path and never forget to thank the people that labored with you to make it.

exposed shoots with a friend, just for fun, when I first started getting tattooed. I always wanted to end up doing modelling, but I was way too shy for it back then. When I did my first actual shoot back in January, years after my first couple of ‘just for fun’ shoots, I had no idea what to expect. I just knew that I had seen the amazing work of the photographer I shot with and wanted to be a part of it. I never expected to love modelling too as much as I do, or to get published, especially so quickly. I’ve already been able to work with some of the most creative people I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been published multiple times, including getting my first cover recently. It’s awesome and I’m completely grateful for and humbled by all of the positive feedback and amazing opportunities I get. What are your favourite styles/ themes/concepts to shoot? I have an extreme love for Halloween. Vampires are my favorite thing to dress up as, and I’ve been some variation of a Vampire more Halloweens than I care to admit. As much as I love doing a more natural shoot, and showing people what I actually look like in real life, I can’t help but love getting dressed up and pretending to be someone else just as much. Any shoot that allows me to be a scary/creepy kind of sexy is always going to be my favorite. Are there any styles of modeling that you would like to explore more? I’m pretty open to trying any creative ideas the photographer and/or I come up with. Anything that’s different and fun sounds good to me! Can you tell us about the journey you took to become a model? I grew up being really shy, but I began loving the whole tattooed / modeling / music / photography scene pretty young. I actually started off in the scene doing live band photography and band promotions for a while. It was a lot of fun. I got some awesome opportunities and I met a ton of amazing people. It was only recently, however, that I got the guts to be on the other side of the camera. My first actual shoot was in January of this year and I completely fell in love with it. I figured I’d throw a
couple pics up online, do a shoot here and there, and just have fun with it. I shot again in February and then in March, and both of those shoots ended up getting featured in magazines. It was such an awesome feeling and my passion for modeling grew quickly from there. Since then, modeling has become a huge part of my life and I can’t imagine not doing it now. When you first started, did it turn out to be how you had imagined? Or did it surprise you in any way? I had done a couple of
What was it like to work with Tragic Glamour Photography during the featured shoot, and what was your favourite thing about it? Tragic Glamour is a one stop shop for amazingness. Chelsea is one crazy talented chick. This girl took me from my just rolled out of bed look, to completely fabulous with three different looks in one day. Each look we did was completely opposite from the last, and so much fun. Not to mention the pictures came out great, and she’s just an awesome person in general. I can’t wait to work with her again! Away from the camera, how would you describe your own personal style? My style off camera varies on what kind of mood I’m in day to day. While I’m at my normal day job, I’m very casual and sort of tom-boy. I work around a bunch of welders in a warehouse office, so dressing up isn’t really necessary. Days off can vary from punk, to goth, to gym rat, to sweet and girly. It all depends on what’s going on, and where I’m going. I love switching things up and being different. How has being a model affected your life so far? Modeling has definitely made me a more confident, social person. I’ve always been very introverted. Since I’ve started modeling, that definitely had to change and I couldn’t be happier that it did. Getting myself out there and being more social has allowed me to work with, and even become friends with, some really amazing people and I’m really grateful for that. With so many trying to break into the industry, what is your personal view on the current alternative modelling scene? I try not to stress about how “popular” or “well known” I am. While, of course, I do love getting my name out there and becoming a face people recognize, it can’t be your main focus in this industry. There are a TON of people doing alternative or tattooed modeling now that are incredibly beautiful and creative. I think it’s important, while you work hard and do your best, to still stay humble and try to go with the flow.

If you had the opportunity to collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? I have a photographer bucket list full of people I would love to work with, and I’ve already been lucky enough to cross a few big ones off, such as Tragic Glamour, Yellow Bubbles/Spoiled Cherry, and Silvia Paveri. If I rambled off the rest of my bucket list, we’d be here all day. So, to name just a few, I would love to work with Andy Hartmark, Hugo V, Kat Attack and Fotodoor one day. I would also LOVE to model some Peep Show Clothing in a shoot or two someday as well, because Jessica definitely makes some rad clothes. What do you hope to achieve in your modelling career in the future? I started my modeling career with no real plan in mind, just kinda going with the flow, and it’s taken me to places I never even thought would be possible already. I think I might just continue with that mindset, continue to work my butt off, and hope for the best!

exposed Can you tell us about the journey you took to become a model? I didn’t really take much of one if I’m honest! When I left school, I decided to train to become a hairdresser, but ill health put a stop to that. I had major kidney surgery in June 2012 and didn’t fully recover for quite some time. By the following February I seriously didn’t know what path to take, but was approached by a local photographer to test with him. When I received the images from him, I uploaded them to an online agency. I had a few shoots in the following couple of months, but by April I was literally inundated with bookings. I have worked full time as a model since then. When you first started, did it turn out to be how you had imagined? Or did it surprise you in any way? I didn’t really have any expectations, but I have been more than surprised at some of the things I have been lucky enough to do and the people I have met. You specialize in beauty, pin up, boudoir fetish/ latex and lingerie etc, but are there any styles of modelling that you would love to explore? At the moment, I am happy with what I am doing. I really don’t know what’s around the corner and I really don’t want to restrict myself in anyway, so I’d consider most projects. What was it like to work with Claire Seville on this featured shoot, and what was your favourite thing about it? Claire is wonderful, not only is she a very talented photographer, but she’s a great friend. Claire is very down to earth, relaxed and has a great sense of humour so whenever we work together we know there is going to be plenty of laughter. It makes work VERY easy. Away from the camera, how would you describe your own personal style? I’m quite unique in my choice of style. I like to dress differently and have my own sense of style rather than just following fashion. Ironically I’m quite introverted and don’t actually like that much attention when I’m out and about, but dressing the way I do doesn’t always make the two ideals go hand in hand. I live in quite a small town and am often subjected to comments. I prefer to be out in bigger towns where I can wear what I want and still blend in! How has being a model affected your life so far? I haven’t really let it affect me; I’m quite grounded in that respect. However it’s certainly benefited me, travelling to different countries and meeting exceptionally creative people which in turn has allowed me to make some wonderful friendships. With so many trying to break into the industry, what is your personal view on the current alternative modelling scene? It’s certainly a very competitive market! ‘Alternative’ has such an expansive definition. It’s hard to have an original idea, but I think that’s what makes people so creative. They have to go that extra mile to make a concept their own. Rebelicious magazine | 73
exposed If you had the opportunity to collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? I would love to work with photographers like Rankin, Nick Night, David LaChapelle or Mario Testino to name a few, also for pin up work Viva Van Story. I was lucky enough to work with Masuimi Max very recently, she’s lovely but I’d also love to do something with Dita Von Teese or Mosh who are both so inspirational. What do you hope to achieve in your modelling career in the future? I’d love to be on the cover of Vogue (who wouldn’t?!). I’d also love to be the face of a major cosmetics brand such as Chanel or Dior. I’m still quite new to this game so my expectations are still under exploration, but I’m aiming high!

Welcome back to Rebelicious! It’s been just over a year since we last featured you, how have things progressed for you since then? Hello, Rebelicious! Thank you for having me back. I’ve been very busy since we last spoke. I’ve had multiple features on Vogue Italia’s website, both on their main page and on their “Driven by Desire” subcategory. I’ve also had two exhibitions with Sherwood Art Week, which featured images with a dainty, paint-like feel to them. I’ve just finished an editorial set called “Free Summer”, based on the communes I visited when I was growing up and the style favoured by the friends I made there; this style is coming back into fashion 90 | Rebelicious magazine
at the moment. I used vintage fashion mixed with designer pieces, some from Hannah at Sewpunk’d Clothing and vintage pieces supplied by Eleanor Rose Bland from Re-fashioned.
Those that have followed your work may have seen a shift in your style... Could you tell us about any new inspirations/ influences you currently have? I’ve actually been stifled for inspiration lately. I’m usually an inspired person and new ideas would keep me awake for half of the night, but recently there’s been a lull. So, in order to get that inspiration back I’ve been looking for ideas within less obvious places, such as Brain
Blessed’s amazing storytelling abilities, poets like Kate Tempest and Geneen Marie Haugan, and performance artists such as Marina Abramović and Millie Brown. I’m finding that when you work from home, your muses can sometimes become quiet. There’s only so much you can learn and experiment with whilst at home in your hooded leopard print dressing gown. I’ve therefore been trying to surround myself with artists of all kinds; to join in with their vibes, collaborate and feed from their energy. I feel that you need a lot of input when it comes to making images, especially when you feel lacklustre or uninspired. I’m also experimenting with my personal style and fashion, as it’s something that’s taken a back seat within my life. My own style has had to be very practical due to the requirement of moving quickly around on set and being able to lift and carry things, but I’m learning I needn’t be in battered jeans and loose dress shirts all the time! I’m currently wearing a bustle made from rubbish bags and parcel tape as I’m going to a post apocalypse themed party. There’s always an essence of play when it comes to the creative process and it’s something that has been lost to me recently. The featured photo shoot this time round has quite a dark undertone to it. What was the inspiration behind this shoot and what was your experience like putting it together? My inspiration centred on how I’ve been feeling recently, which is a lack of inspiration! I named the series “Wild” as that’s what I wanted her to look like she was striving for; the wild freedom and the drive you feel when you’re in the midst of a powerful creative inspiration. It’s an abstract portrait of an expressive goal of mine. Raven Brookes is always a joy to work with; we’ve known each other for many years and when I put the casting out for this shoot I knew she’d be the perfect person to tell this story. Not only is she such a hard worker, but she’s very good at adapting a story or a character to a shoot. I wanted her to look satisfied but determined, like a wild, healthy creature or someone that’s just fallen in requited love. I included some leaves and make-up

smudges on her face for some of the frames to accentuate the wild and rugged theme, but to also mess with the perspective a little bit; the leaves may appear to be floating in water or falling into the frame or caught in her hair; it’s difficult to say with the angle and props used in the image and purposefully adds a layer of ambiguity.
have wanted to work with me but have expressed reservation because it’s involved elaborate props, impractical materials or a heavy, complicated theme. To me, an idea like that is food for the soul, and echoes my favourite quotation of all time, “Bite off more than you can chew, and then chew it!”

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014? I’m very lucky to have a few collaborations with couturiers Eva Jacobs and Gore Couture and Anastasija Potjomkina the RottenZombieFairy coming up soon. I have a bunch of editorials and interviews coming out in September, so keep your eyes peeled for them! I’m also doing independent business study at the moment and going to a lot of seminars about online business and marketing; this is something I’ve previously learned whilst I was going along but I’ve benefitted greatly by being a little more studious and ordered about my learning of the business side of the industry. What bit of advice would you give to anyone who may be considering working with you sometime in the future? Ask! I love to work with people of all different shapes, sizes, looks and walks of life. Also, don’t be shy when coming forward with off-the-wall ideas; some people Rebelicious magazine | 91

What inspired you to become a model? Ever since I was little I loved being in front of the camera and being photographed so it has always felt natural to me. So a couple years ago I finally felt like I wanted to shoot with a professional photographer for fun. Only earlier this year did I decide that I wanted to get out there and show what I have been doing and the main reason for that is because I want to show that plus size women can do it too. What are your favourite styles/ themes/concepts to shoot? I love shooting fantasy, gothic, conceptual and blending characters from books, movies, shows and icons of American culture. Are there any styles/themes that you would love to explore in the future? I would love to do a dual shoot with another model or models where we are the opposites of each other. Examples: I’m plus size and would love to shoot with a more petite model, and I would love to shoot with a really girly model since I consider myself a bit more masculine/tom boyish.
You worked with one of our favourite duos Yellow Bubbles Photography and Spoiled Cherry for the featured shoot. What was that experience like for you? It is always fun working with Yellow Bubbles and Spoiled Cherry. They are very professional and are very easy to work with. For this particular shoot we had some great back round props to work with that made the shots that much better. Although I think I broke her big clock (yikes!), I thought it was just a prop so I moved the clock hands to a better looking time, so hopefully it still works haha! How has being a model affected your life so far? So far not much has changed. I am just starting to get publications out so we will see what happens. If you had the opportunity to collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? Well as far as people I would shoot with I’d love to shoot with the cast of True Blood!! That would be a dream! I love
that show and am so sad it is ending. Plus who wouldn’t want to shoot with supernatural hotties?? I mean really. As modelling involves a lot of motivation and hard work, how do you make sure that you are always on top form? I try to get a good nights sleep beforehand and just be open minded to the process of shooting. I also like to research what kind of make up I want and what kind of wardrobe I wear for a shoot so I think it makes it more fun for me and less stressful because I am prepared. What do you hope to achieve in the future? My current goals for the future is to get most of the sets I have done published, continue to think of interesting and outside the box type shoots to do and maybe one day get paid.

What inspired you to become a photographer? I’ve been a photographer since I could hold a camera. I recently scanned in over 50,000 images that I’ve taken throughout my life (before the digital world). I’ve always been interested in the still image and capturing a moment. At one point I decided to try shooting with people. After one session, a woman called me and said she didn’t know that she was that beautiful. That inspired me to show everyone that they are beautiful. What inspires you the most when it comes to thinking of new concepts to shoot? My inspiration is all around me! I can become inspired by taking a walk or by being presented an idea. Mainly I love crafts and repurposing items. I’m just lucky that I can find people to model my sometimes interesting creations. Are there any photographic styles/themes that you haven’t tried yet, but would love to have a go at in the future? I have an 100 | Rebelicious magazine
interest in street photography. I enjoy listening to the stories of others and would love to be able to capture the stories. Don’t assume everything on the surface is what you see. The featured photoshoot with Moli Hall wearing the headdress made out of videotape reels looks incredible! What was the inspiration behind it and how did it all come together? Most of my shoots involve something repurposed. This shoot happened to be the product of an old headband, a belt from Goodwill, and a VHS tape of Titanic that had been sitting on my shelf for too many years. My heart will go on, but that tape is destroyed. What have been some of your favourite experiences since becoming a photographer? Road trips, when possible, are always my favorite part of a photo shoot. You really get to know the person, not just the model and/or makeup artist, while you’re in a car together for 9 hours.
Has anything strange/out of the ordinary happened during a photo shoot? I was shooting with a semi-nude model and the cable guys walked into the studio. No knock or doorbell ring. It was awkward. They seemed to enjoy it though. If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would you pick and why them? I’ve been blessed to work with many amazing models! If I was to be able to shoot with anyone else in the world, it would be Triz Täss. She has such a versatile and interesting look. With the photography industry becoming even more saturated as the months go by, how do you make sure that your work stands out from the pack? I fell for photography out of a desperate need to be creative, not to become famous. One of my differences is that I will go above and beyond to create a real to life set. I try to capture in camera as closely as possible to my vision.

What advice would you give to any models wanting to work with you in the future? I have very few limits so I’m open to all ideas. If you have any concepts that you’d like to capture, please feel free to contact me! Also, I’m sarcastic, witty, and like to laugh and have fun. If it’s not fun, then why do it? Finally is there anything that you would like to say to our readers? The least favorite thing about the photography world is the need for some photographers and artists to create competition. Artists, especially in a part of the U.S. that’s not known for art, should come together as one. However, there seems to be egos that go with that same competition. It can be overwhelming at times.

What initially got you into photography? I used to do a lot of sculpture, but that requires a lot of space which I don’t have and makes tons of mess! Then a few years ago the model Roswell Ivory persuaded me to get a decent camera. Now I think about photoshoots in a very sculptural way; I design and make everything from full sets to small accessories for my shoots.
What inspires you the most when it comes to thinking of new concepts to shoot? I do a lot of urban exploring photography which takes me to some pretty weird and fantastic places. Sometimes I find myself in an abandoned power station, morgue or asylum etc, and straight away think that I would love to bring a model here. Other times my mind just wanders and an idea pops out of my subconscious. That is usually followed by the horrible realization of how unlikely I am to get permission to use the location I want and what a headache it will be to set up. But I often do it anyway. Are there any photographic styles/themes that you haven’t tried yet, but would love to have a go at in the future? It seems to me that it is mostly models who travel to photographers. But as I’m very much into environmental portraiture I have invested in some portable lighting and will start traveling a lot more for shoots. I’d like to start shooting video as well. I have some exciting plans for the new year, but I’m not going to give anything away yet. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the featured photoshoot with Anita and what it was like putting it all together? I had shot with Anita before in an old jet engine test cell; it’s the most Sci-Fi looking location I could wish for. When I found out she had the Star Wars inspired outfit we discussed returning to the location but it was bulldozed before we were able to. When I saw the Darth Vader graffiti work, I knew Anita still had the outfit and I had always thought that the ATAT toy looked very dog-like. This was a very easy shoot to organize compared to some of the other things I get up to. Model: Anita De Bauch Latex Outfit: Shhh! Couture Accessories: Chimeric Ganish 104 | Rebelicious magazine
What have been some of your favorite experiences since becoming a photographer? I’ve made new friends and had adventures and enjoy the challenge of getting into places where we really are not supposed to be.
exposed If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would you pick and why them? Miesha Tate (the first ever woman to fight in the UFC); a much better female role model and symbol of girl power than the Spice Girls or Kim Kardashian. Rick Genest, aka Zombie Boy, his tattoos are awesome. Jean Paul Gaultier; I really liked his work on the Fifth Element. I really like a lot of his work, it’s just loud, fun, sexy and not too serious. With the photography industry becoming even more saturated as the months go by, how do you make sure that your work stands out from the pack? I don’t really think about that too much. I just try to create things that are beautiful and interesting, luckily people seem to like them. What advice would you give to any models wanting to work with you in the future? Just ask. If you don’t ask you don’t get. I really like working on collaboration projects. I would do more if I had the time. Pitching an unusual concept will get me far more interested than the number of likes your Facebook has.

When I was younger I dreamt of becoming… a veterinarian, but when I found out I wouldn’t only have to heal them but also sometimes have to put one down, I let that dream go. I never leave the house without… wearing makeup, it’s my war paint lol. My favourite item of clothing is… scarves, I wear scarves all times of the year and I have them in all shapes, sizes, fabrics and colours. My favourite mythical creature is… the phoenix, because of their rebirth and because when they come back they’re always stronger than they were before. If I wasn’t a model I would be… a pinup and fantasy photographer.
The last film I saw was… Jumanji, in honour of Robin Williams. If I had to take 3 items on a desert island with me, I would take… a mirror, toothbrush and mp3 player. If I had the choice to be either a superhero or a villain, I would choose to be… I would totally be a hero... I would create and become Super Nurse! In a hot outfit with cool medical accesories strapped in my garter. One thing you wouldn’t be able to find out about me online is… that I am a big Trekky! If I could time-travel, I would travel to… Ancient Egypt. www.facebook.com/vicky.lievens Model: Vicky Lievens Photography: Freddy Van Wonterghem
