LONDONEDGE FASHION AND LONDONEDGE ORIGINAL RETURNS WITH NEW FOCUS ZONES FOR 2013. In its 14th year, LondonEdge continues to improve, develop and grow and remains the biggest and best show of its kind in the world. With an incredible array of brands, the show caters to a group of some of the most creative and exciting ‘niches’ in fashion and accessories. Bringing everything from dramatic footwear and elaborate corsets to body piercing merchandise, vintage, retro, 40s, 50s, 60s, 80s, mod, fancy dress, hosiery, swimwear and more. To help buyers understand the plethora of brands available, the show is split in to two different areas – LondonEdge Fashion and LondonEdge Original. LondonEdge Original offers a typically edgy platform for punk, rock 'n' roll and tattoo styles, where as LondonEdge Fashion lends itself to the quirky, commercial and high fashion collections that are currently enjoying vintage, retro and kitsch influences – perfect for individuals and fashionistas. This clear division appointed for the September 2012 show proved a positive change and successfully highlighted the broad and exciting ranges on offer at the show. For the 2013 shows, there are further focus zones within these two areas – London X (for more risqué/burlesque/lingerie) and Horror & Costume within LondonEdge Original and in LondonEdge Fashion The Festival Tent (for all things needed by music festival goers from clothing to lifestyle products) and the continued growth of VintEdge (vintage, reformed vintage, vintage inspired and craft-inspired clothing & jewellery). A consistently entertaining show, LondonEdge offers buyers & exhibitors added value such as Burlesque performances, aerial acrobatics, contortionists, free haircuts, Betty bangs and rolls at the Mister Ducktail Lounge, live tattoo & graffiti art and daily walkabout artists. LondonEdge is one of the longest standing and consistent fashion trade shows in the UK offering an ever-evolving platform for its UK, European and worldwide exhibitors and buyers. The next LondonEdge event is strictly trade only and will be held January 25th-27th at The National Hall, Olympia. To register for tickets head to www.londonedge.com

ALT-FEST CONFIRMED FOR AUGUST 2014! Alt-Fest – a brand new radical alternative music and lifestyle festival with a totally wicked edge, has been confirmed to take place on August 15th, 16th and 17th 2014 at a 50,000 capacity site in the South East of England, to be announced soon. Organized by AC Promotions (the duo of D. Void and Missy who are behind Club AntiChrist), Alt-Fest will feature a unique experience for all attendees, including five live music stages, a massive clubbing marquee that's to be hosted by a different ‘name’ event team each night, a circus big top, an alternative traders’ field, fairground rides and an artists’ village, showcasing installations, body art and sculptures taking shape over the weekend. A large kids area, with crèche (rarely offered at mainstream festivals), will provide a dedicated area for festival going families throughout the five days of camping available. What really sets Alt-Fest apart from the other available festivals is that it will be the UK’s first ever crowd-funded festival, sourced and created by the crowd itself. As well as voting on acts to appear on the bill, festival-goers are stepping forward to volunteer the crowd-sourced resources, labour and finance that Alt-Fest requires to be a truly punter-powered event, where ticket-holders are fully invested in the decision making process.

to complain - or to come on board with creating the real alternative. For more information and to keep up to date with all things AltFest, head to their website: www.alt-fest.com or their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/AlternativeFest

The demand now being demonstrated at Alt-Fest’s fledging website confirms festival-goers are not only ready for an alternative, but are committed to creating it. The support received in these early stages has already been sufficient to secure a 300 acre site, and to open talks with acts of a calibre that will make Alt-Fest a worthy competitor to established events - and this is only the start! The first acts brought to the Alt-Fest bill with the help of people power will be announced in February 2013, when a Kickstarter campaign launches, enabling punters to contribute to shaping the festival’s next big step forward. Unlike any event before it, Alt-Fest is inviting the crowd to call the shots throughout the decision making process. Fans fed up with bumped-up booking fees, food price-fixing and the same old acts offered by today’s festival ‘in-crowd’ can decide REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE 5

MIKE HRANICA THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA What is your number 1 album of the year? "Beach House - Bloom" Why do you love it? "I don’t think there were many standout records for the year, but Bloom was definitely refreshing and a fantastic follow up for Beach House. The album is a cohesive progression, which like most artists look to do, is to say that the band evolved without losing any of the prior releases’ fundamental characteristics. It’s also worth mentioning that Bloom creates a darker and more dreary motif than Beach House’s past records: something I very much enjoy. While I wouldn’t say the album will go down as an all-time favourite for me, I will say that I’ll most likely spend time with Bloom for quite some time." 4 other albums you’ve loved this year? Metric - Synthetica mewithoutYou - Ten Stories Meshuggah - Koloss Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind

DAVYD WINTER-BATES BURY TOMORROW What is your number 1 album of the year? "There have been so many great albums out this year, but in all honest my favourite album has to be 'L’enfant Sauvage' by Gojira. It is the perfect blend of atmospheric imagery and seething anger. I have probably listened to this album more times from start to finish than any other album this year. It's an album I wish I'd written, the passion behind the metal is something you lose a lot these days as it is usually replaced with a sense of how heavy a band can be. Gojira are heavy as shit and still manage to take you on an emotional experience that goes beyond simply aggression. I hope that we can achieve this level of artistry on our next record." 4 other albums you’ve loved this year? Baroness - Yellow & Green The Acacia Strain - Death is The only Mortal Parkway Drive - Atlas Architects – Daybreaker

YNGVE ANDERSEN BLOOD COMMAND What is your number 1 album of the year? "My number 1 album of the year is Odd Futures; 'The OF Tape vol.2', though it’s really a mixtape. OFWGKTA is something refreshingly new and doesn't hang to the clichés. Their music is both funny and dangerous, like all good music should be. Awesome lyrics. Killer collective, and stupid white suburbian kids like us who really don’t know shit about hip-hop can kind of get it. What else can you ask for? We’ve blasted this record on tours and afterparties all year and it really influenced our lyrics on Funeral Beach. Golf Wang!" 4 other albums you've loved this year? Plus, we grew up playing shows with them and we're from the same town. So, it's like - it's just a given!" 4 other albums you've loved this year? Stubborn Heart - Stubborn Heart Clams Casino - Instrumentals Mixtape 2 Meshuggah - Koloss Pierce The Veil - Collide With The Sky

STITCH THE DEFILED What is your number 1 album of the year? Whitechapel Whitechapel. Why do you love it? "It’s just a brutally heavy album as usual from them, but they added so many little extra bits on this one. Massively stepped it up. Lots of added electronics and pianos and the songs seem a lot more structured and slightly more melodic. We did our new record in the same studio in Florida they did theirs and it was released close to us being out there, so I listened to it a lot even for like referencing and stuff and listened to it whilst jogging most days." 4 other albums you’ve loved this year? TOP FIVE NAIL STYLE IDEAS FANCY DOING SOMETHING NEAT WITH YOUR NAILS? HERE ARE SOME IDEAS THAT WILL JAZZ UP YOUR HANDS AND ONCE YOU HAVE MASTERED THE TRICKY BITS, YOU WILL HAVE SOME PRETTY IMPRESSED FRIENDS! EACH STYLE HAS SOME SIMPLE STEPS TO FOLLOW THIS IS COOL NAILS MADE EASY! 1. For this punky-pink and black crackle effect, use Barry M Shocking Pink as the undercoat – use two layers for an event coat. Leave this to dry before adding a thin layer of Barry M Black Nail Effects polish over the top. Finally use a clear top coat to finish once the nails are dry. 2. For a futuristic feel use the same technique as above, using a metallic silver undercoat, for example Number 17 Silver nail varnish. Leave to dry before adding a layer of Barry M Purple Glitter Nail Effects polish over the top. Finish with a clear top coat once this is dry.

1 2

3. For nautical-style nails, use a double coat of MUA nail polish shade 9. After this has dried use a black nail varnish, for example MUA shade 2, to draw an anchor on each nail. This takes time and a steady hand, so you may want to do a practice attempt first! Then finish with a clear top coat once this is dry. 4. This cute ladybird effect also takes time and practice but once you have mastered the steady hand it looks impressive. Start off with a double coat of No.17 in red, or any similar red nail polish. Leave to dry before using MUA shade 2 black or any other black nail varnish to draw a straight line across the top of your nail - try following the free edge (the white part) of the nail as a template. Once this is dry, do the same vertically through the middle of the nail. Leave to dry again before adding the spots (be sure not to have too much varnish on the brush, as it smudges everywhere, gentle application with a small amount works fine). Finally, finish with a clear top coat.

5. The spotty effect looks extremely cute if done carefully! Start with a double layer of Barry M shade 310 Mushroom. Once this has dried, use the same technique as described for the ladybird nails to achieve the dots. With a black nail varnish, get a little on the brush and dab gently on to the nail without moving the brush at all. Once this is dry, finish with a clear top coat.

FASHION & BEAUTY

You have made even your most intricate jewellery by hand... is it a long process? Usually when make a piece of jewellery it can take a while. However, after a bit of practise, I get pretty fast. What is the most time you have spent on one item, and what did you make? The most intricate piece of jewellery I have ever made was a necklace I made for my mother over a year ago. It was a mixture of beads and chains and other material... in total, it must have taken 10 hours but it was worth it. She still wears the necklace to this day. Do you have a favourite piece from the Endless Love collection? My favourite piece is the Pyramid Pendant. Its simple, elegant and quirky. In an ideal world, where would you like to see your jewellery being worn? I’d love my jewellery to be worn Daphne Guinness, Diane Pernet, Michelle Harper or Kate Lanphear. You’re based in Leeds, where can we find your pieces? Birds Yard, Bo Carter’s Boutique, the collection is also available at fashionpony.co.uk

BELLES BEJEWELLED

Your futuristic new collection is called ‘Endless Love,’ can you tell us the concept behind the name and pieces? The key theme of my work is structure and shape. With this latest collection, all the leather used is off cut material from my other jewellery and craft making, as well as donations from other designers. All the Perspex off cuts from the larger pieces are used to make rings and smaller items; never wasted. Environmental responsibility is important to me, and is part of the core ethos of what I do.

We first saw the collection on the runway at Leeds Fashion Show, worn by models whose faces were masked by scarves... was this where it was first shown? Absolutely, I wanted the event to be extra special. In previous years, I have done collaborations with other talented designers like Lucy Bennett from Roc ‘n’ Doll, but this was my first solo showing. 14 REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE

Your accessory company is named Belles Bejewelled, but you also have guys featuring in photo shoots. Is the jewellery exclusively intended for girls? The jewellery is for anyone with a fearless sense of style! What’s next for Belles Bejewelled? I have plans to expand into stores throughout the United Kingdom and abroad, as well as other collaborative projects with designers, and launching a new collection next year. I also have several events I will be involved in including fashion shows, I’m also looking forward to launching a blog next year about about northern style. PLANET ZERO

FASHION & BEAUTY

What is your company all about? PlanetZero is the neon collision of Zeroluie and me, Faye de-Boorder, a creative double act! We pride ourselves on our original and unique designs. PlanetZero clothing is galactic glamour with high impact statement pieces and casual items, both made with neon love in the UK.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? We’re inspired mainly by street styles, both British and Japanese, and alternative trends topped off with a PlanetZero twist. Fun is the core our brand, we want to make items that make the wearer look and feel awesome! Are there any pieces you’ve made that stand out as personal favourites? Both Zeroluie and myself love all the PlanetZero pieces as they are our creations! If Zeroluie had to pick however, she can’t get enough of the ‘Mo money, Mo problems’ bomber jacket; it has money notes printed all over it so the wearer will be forever rollin’ deep! My favourite is the pink leather jacket that Zeroluie wore on our collection launch catwalk. I think it not only looks fantastic but summarizes the PlanetZero style. Tell us a bit about any new items/ranges you’re currently working on or have recently released? The PlanetZero range has just launched it’s first collection since I joined the planet. The new collection to me is British urban street style with a Japanese twist and a huge dollop of neon loveliness. With Zeroluie’s tales of her home planet and my ‘we can do anything’ attitude, I can’t see us ever being stuck for inspiration and have vowed to constantly add new items to the range to keep it fresh. Limited edition items are also on the cards. I think our only restriction is the number of hours in the day! How do you make sure that your ideas and designs stay fresh and appealing to your fan base? The PlanetZero fan base is hugely important to us, they are the heart and soul! How our followers style our clothing to their own individual looks is always rewarding to us. Planetzero is all about the customers making the outfit match their personality, and by adding new items regularly we hope to continue to encourage our costumers to have fun with their own personal style. If you could create a custom item for anyone in the world, who would you pick and why? We had a discussion about this when I joined the team; I said I would happily see Gwen Stefani, Nicki Minaj or Kyary Pamyu Pamyu wearing PlanetZero as their styles suit our collection and I wouldn’t mind more people seeing the collection we lovingly designed and made, however Zeroluie explained she did not want an army of clones that may come from celebrity endorsements, but she would love to see a troop of PlanetZero lovers all proud to be different! She also added, ‘Be yourself! Everyone else is taken!’ What does the future hold for you and your brand? We are looking forward to expanding in the future as we recently moved into Afflecks Palace in Manchester. We will be showing PlanetZero at more fashion shows and will start pop-up shops as soon as our star command is established in Afflecks Palace. We are determined and focused to offer something unique and new. We can’t wait to see where our journey takes us! www.facebook.com/PlanetZer0 PHOTOGRAPHY: JENNIFER BYRON MODEL: ZEROLUIE CLOTHING: PLANETZERO

PEARLS & SWINE

What is your company all about? Pearls & Swine is a small millinery business based in West Yorkshire, focused on creating unique, well crafted, surreal headwear for fabulous people who want to stand out from the crowd. Wearing a hat is the best and easiest way to connect with people; there is something a bit brave about it as you look like a confident person if you wear a hat. The feedback I regularly get back from my customers is excitement over the amount of people who complimented them, stopped and spoke to them and the fun they have wearing my work. This is my super power, I may not change the world BUT through what I do I can change someone’s night, make someone smile, cause people to connect who might never have connected, make people feel beautiful, bring out their confidence. It’s exciting to think that I can do that to people all over the world without ever meeting or knowing them!

with photographers... I am not sure exactly what I will do with this, ideally I would love to do an art show, displaying the elaborate creations I am now working on as art.

"AS A DESIGNER I DON’T WANT TO BE A SECOND RATE SOMEONE ELSE, I WANT TO BE A FIRST RATE ME!" What are some of the pieces you've made or photoshoots you've been a part of that you've been really happy with this year? I have done quite a few shoots I am very pleased with this year, I have worked with

Katelizabeth Photography, Charis Talbot Photography, Mudkiss Photography and just did this shoot with Ellie Victoria Gale Photography. I am getting more freedom with styling shoots and building sets which I am loving! I am more focused on creating ranges and am more aware of seasons, whereas before I would just work on a million different ideas. I now want to exhaust all the possibilities by doing a range. I am aware that it is hard to create something that hasn’t been done in some shape or form before, but I was pleased with how my Halloween range turned out. It was very brightly coloured, sweet and sinister rather than the obvious pumpkin/witch hat/skulls/orange/black etc. I am the sort of designer who wants to create work that you can re-wear, not just one night a year. What is the point of a hat in a box? A hat in a box is a sad thing.... a hat needs to be loved.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? It’s impossible to pin point a single source. I am a very visual person, generally I view everything from a millinery perspective, ie: “Can I put that on my head?” I am quite obsessive in my work, I love detail, I endeavour to create something that will either take your breath away or make you smile. I have recurring themes in my work which frequently reference Schiaparelli, Dali, Frida Kahlo, Gods/Goddesses as well as food, insects, death, different cultures, flowers, bright colours, art, stories, movies etc. Oddly enough I am not a huge lover of fashion, I am devoted to art. The idea of art not necessarily being something you have on a wall or a lifeless statue or a commodity revered for it’s financial value, but to BE living art is what excites me. I am in love with the theatre of being, I surround myself with colour, my home is my biggest ongoing art project so I live in a constant state of inspiration which can be a bit of a problem as I struggle to switch off from my work. Are there any pieces you’ve made that stand out as personal favourites? My work needs a person to wear it to bring it to life, for this reason once a piece has been made I am generally happy to see it go off to a life beyond my little studio, though some pieces I mail a bit more sadly than others. I am currently working on a more couture range which includes my Virgin Mary headdresses, these pieces are more art than practical so I am hanging onto them for the foreseeable future as I am “collecting” Virgin Mary’s by collaborating REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE 19

FASHION & BEAUTY How do you make sure that your ideas and designs stay fresh and appealing to your fan base? I stay true to myself, I don’t hold back when I create, I am guided by my materials. Sometimes I will wait for years for an item to become the accessory that I am most happy with so I don’t rush my ideas but let them take shape in their own time. I never stop haberdashery shopping, I do a lot of research for items so if I get a crazy idea I will spend a lot of time looking for the right materials to make that idea a reality. I don’t follow other designers as I am not really interested in what other designers are doing, I don’t want to be influenced by them. I don’t buy magazines (I bought a few the other day as I was staying in a hotel and there was no internet and was mostly horrified by the 'fashion'!) - I try to keep my creativity as mine as possible. I don’t see the point of doing what is done, as a designer I don’t want to be a second rate someone else, I want to be a first rate me! If you could create a custom item for anyone in the world, who would you pick and why? I love the ladies from the blog Advanced Style, they are my fashion icons who give me hope for the future. Society has a great fear of getting older, we are supposed to be forever young, it’s almost like getting older is failing in some way. Prior to allowing myself to be creative I was a carer, I saw age and what comes with it and it frightened me. But these women use their outfits to express themselves, they are what I consider real style inspirations, not “celebrities”. I am extremely proud to announce that in the New Year one of these ladies, Sue Kreitzman, will be modelling for Pearls & Swine, which is a dream come true! Having a personal style is something many people are scared of, they feel safe looking like their peers. I love people who step out of the herd to be themselves! What does the future hold for you and your brand? I am starting to collaborate with more creatives who are incorporating my work into their art, I like the idea of my art feeding into totally different art. I find rehashing the same idea over and over to be a bit soul destroying; I envy designers who are able to remake the same work day in and out, as I realize that this is how business works, but I am not driven by money, I am driven by creating. I want to see something I have never seen come to life beneath my fingers, I want to be excited and proud of what I do. I am hoping to get more involved in the styling side of my shoots as I want the images showing my work to be increasingly surreal, more editorial and arty. I feel very excited and positive about the future of Pearls & Swine. I feel like I am finally beginning to spread my wings and I have laid a good foundation for where I want to take my business. www.pearlsandswine.com HEADPIECES: PEARLS & SWINE PHOTOGRAPHY: ELLIE VICTORIA GALE MODEL: CHLOE ABIGAIL MUA: JANE ARMSTRONG DRESS: BIRD SHELL

What is your company all about? I design/make & sculpt jewellery, clothing and accessories. I articulate pieces in the styles of nerdy, gothic, steampunk, glamorous to downright bizarre. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw inspiration from everyday things with added ‘whoa’ or ‘what?!’ factor. I’m also heavily influenced by old games I used to play before I hit the big ‘double digits’. Are there any pieces you’ve made that stand out as personal favourites? My certain favourite piece is the plastic sculpted Abe mudokon head. This necklace also goes down very well with those who shared a joint compassion for the little dude and dedicated a long time (sometimes years in some cases I’ve heard!) to saving his ass from the brutal fate of the Glukkons. Tell us a bit about any new items/ranges you’re currently working on or have recently released? I currently am working on building corsets, these aren’t made out of your everyday-material, instead they are constructed purely from metal alone. How do you make sure that your ideas and designs stay fresh and appealing to your fan base? I listen to my fans; there have been numerous times where I have unveiled something and uploaded it onto the Internet, my lovely fans express their keen interest on having something similar to it but with their added bit of personal preference; all other times I come up with fresh ideas are unfortunately at about 3am when I am trying to sleep but my mind is whirring away, so I’ll hurl myself out of bed and set to making it. If you could create a custom item for anyone in the world, who would you pick and why? If I could pick anyone at all, I would pick the singer/songwriter and pianist Fiona Apple. Her beautiful voice has gotten me through hours of perfecting pieces, often throwing many in the bin; but her melodies kept me sat there getting my work to a stage that I can be proud of and show the world. I would probably make her an apple pendant made from mechanics, relatively in mirror to her ‘Extraordinary Machine’. What does the future hold for you and your brand? When I was younger I had no idea what I wanted to be, I only stumbled across the realization that I want to do this for the rest of my life a few years ago, the thought doesn’t scare me but excites me! I want to spend my life making things that I could see on the street being worn by a stranger; they chose to wear it that day, they liked it enough to wear it; knowing that makes me very happy indeed. www.mortiism.co.uk JEWELLERY: MORTIIS.M PHOTOGRAPHER: CHARIS TALBOT PHOTOGRAPHY MODEL: BELLE UK 22 REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE

FASHION & BEAUTY

FOUR THINGS ABOUT LATEX THAT THEY NEVER MENTIONED IN THE MATRIX.

My relationship with my latex wardrobe is like having a gorgeous boyfriend with an immature sense of humour; looking great on your arm and making you feel like the most incredible person in the room… before pushing you off a chair. (And yes I have slipped off chairs due to lubed-up-ness.) More on that in a second… I was lucky - I began wearing latex on photoshoots for designers who taught me how to choose and care for the pieces to make them last as long as possible. I’m going to share their wisdom! 30 REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE

1) IT FEELS WEIRD... Or lovely… If you have a fetish for latex, there is nothing better than the feel of the second skin that latex creates and the ritual of putting it on. Well, I may go to fetish model hell for this but I’m afraid it does nothing for me. You need to coat yourself either with lubricant (waterbased only, as oil destroys latex so do NOT use baby oil) or talc to smooth the outfit over yourself. Then put a shiner on top to make it look its best. Most latex stores sell it but you can buy silicone spray from mechanic shops too. 2) THE SWEAT!!! Perhaps latex feels different in The Matrix, but I wouldn’t take the risk of trying to fight an Agent while wearing it. I suppose the advantage could be that you’re too slippery to get caught…? Either way, latex is freezing when you

A GOOD-QUALITY LATEX OUTFIT IS SHINY, EXPENSIVE-LOOKING, AND PERFECT PULLING YOUR FIGURE IN WHERE IT COUNTS WHILE CURVING AROUND AND FIRMING UP EVERYWHERE ELSE. IF IT IS A PARTICULARLY AMAZING FIT (OR BETTER YET, CUSTOM-MADE), LATEX LOOKS AS THOUGH IT WAS DRAWN ON BY A PARTICULARLY TALENTED COMIC BOOK ARTIST. THERE ARE FEW OTHER MATERIALS THAT CAN MAKE THE WEARER FEEL LIKE A SUPERHERO… UNTIL THEY BEGIN TO DANCE, OR SIT DOWN WITH A HIGHLY UNATTRACTIVE FARTING SOUND.

first put it on. It then warms up to the temperature of your body but without letting skin breathe, so if you sweat, that sweat has nowhere to go except down the backs of your legs. Then, once you leave the club or event and go out in the cold… well, you get the idea. 3) IT’S FRAGILE Another reason why it’s not the most practical for superheroes. If you want a latex collection, buy some of those cheap freezer bags so that you can store each outfit individually. Dark colours often stain lighter colours, and never let your outfit sit next to metal for too long. If your outfit has, say, metal studs, place some tissue paper over them before storing. When touring earlier this year, my suitcase was opened at customs. The first thing they pulled out was my shiny red ball gag. With obvious worry,

they began to pull out more of my bag’s contents. As they eventually realised all the buckles and chains weren’t some elaborate plane-landing device, they started shoving everything back in on top of each other. I shrieked. I am still surprised that I wasn’t arrested - instead I had them carefully repacking my latex and got my flight while trying not to laugh. Hopefully that lesson will spare the wardrobe of the next fetishist they investigate! 4) AFTERCARE I don’t just mean the latex! Even custommade outfits can leave marks sometimes. I have a dress that sometimes leaves suction marks in the elbow joints and armpits. They look like long thin lovebites! The way to avoid them is to lube those areas a bit more and put the outfit on slowly. If you can feel any pinching or tightness, smooth the outfit over the area and adjust as much as you need. Marks usually disappear in a couple of days, though arnica cream is great at speeding up the process if you have any.

IF I HAVEN’T PUT YOU OFF LATEX FOR LIFE… It looks damned good. It really does, and though occasionally it’s not the most comfy of materials it makes up for it by being attention grabbing! It really is worth saving up for a good piece - especially if it’s custom made and when looking for the best designer, ask around! What sort of thing would you like? Though most designers are versatile, if you’d like something pink and spiky, maybe go for a designer who clearly loves that look. You’ll probably get some good advice, especially if you’re not sure what you’re after. Though there is plenty of cheap latex on E-Bay, many sellers are scammers who steal pictures from betterknown designers and create cheap rip-offs! There’s an interesting article about it on the Fetishistas website: http://www.thefetishistas.com/index. php?menu=7&sub=55&display=650

It’s always better to buy the real thing or get a recommendation from someone who already has an outfit. WORDS: ROSWELL IVORY

BOY MEETS WORLD

Comedian Marc Burrows is a bewildered boy in a girly girls world. In this edition of his column, he wishes to share his Christmas music wisdom, i.e. 'The Festive Song Gradient Process' with you.

Let’s get this straight. I really love Christmas music. Once December rolls around and I can legitimately play The Waitresses ‘Christmas Wrapping’ without an ounce of shame or irony, then all pretensions to being a hip and trendy musician/comedian/ music journalist go out of the window. I will regularly be found helping myself to a mince pie and whistling Mike Oldfield’s ‘In Dulci Jubilo’. Sometimes as early as Halloween. I’ve written a Christmas song a year for the last decade, my band The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing put out a Christmas EP called ‘A Very Steampunk Christmas’ (on 7” no less) in 2010, the A-side of which I’d written in its entirety. Last year I went the whole hog and released a solo album of silly Christmas songs (‘A Christmas Gift For You From Marc Burrows’, available now at marcburrows.co.uk, kids.) I know what I’m talking about with this stuff. People get very sick of Christmas songs quite early, which is a shame, because we really only get to enjoy them for a little while every year before they 32 REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE

get put back in their box. As a result I’ve developed a method to stop this happening. I call it the Festive Song Gradient Process, or alternatively, ‘Step Into Christmas’ (thanks Elton).

albums. I’ll also allow John Lennon’s ‘Happy Christmas (War Is Over)’ and The Pogues ‘Fairytale of New York’, but then those are such astonishingly good records you can get away with them all year.

STEP 1- December 1-14. The Cool Phase Right. December is here, and you’re allowed to listen to Christmas music. The trick is not to blow your load too early - there’s loads of subtle, cool music that can scratch the itch in the early stages of the season. Detroit’s Sufjan Stevens have released two box sets of original and classic Christmas songs, last year Emmy the Great and Ash’s Tim Wheeler released an excellent album with songs called things like ‘Jesus The Reindeer’ and ‘Zombie Christmas’. The Ramones, No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, My Chemical Romance and Bad Religion have all done cool Christmas songs. Ease your way in with those.

STEP 3 - December 20-25. IT’S CHRIIIIIIIISTMAAAAAS! Okay, NOW you can go crazy. Get yourselves one of those ‘Now That’s What I Call Christmas’ records and stuff your ears with Slade, Wizzard, Band Aid (ONLY the first one) and Wham! Here’s a tip though - make sure you read the tracklisting carefully when choosing your CD. Some cheaper compilations will fob you off with a few more well known tunes at the start, before you realise you’re stuck with the Steps version of ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ or Ronan Keating doing ‘Fairytale Of New York’ and literally no-one wants that. This is the only time of year you’re allowed to listen to Cliff Richard, so make the most of it.

STEP 2 - December 14-20. Christmas is getting closer, it’s time to step it up a gear. BUT you still need to stay away from the real cheese so you don't get too sick of it. There’s plenty of cooler stuff. I’d allow Queen’s ‘Thank God It’s Christmas’ at this point, maybe some of the crooners, Dean Martin, Sinatra, that sort of thing. Motown Christmas, especially the Jackson Five, ‘James Brown’s Funky Christmas’ and Phil Spector’s ‘Christmas Gift To You’ are excellent

STEP 4 - Dec 26th-November 30th Put it away and don't be tempted, unless you want everyone around you to hate your guts. Follow these simple steps to a Merry Musical Christmas. Twitter: @20thCenturyMarc Marcburrows.co.uk

SINCE THE BRAND’S LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER, THE YELLOW HORSEBIRD HAS FLOWN ACROSS THE NORTH LEAVING EVERYBODY CURIOUS ABOUT ITS STORY. WITH EMPHASIS ON QUALITY AND BIG PLANS FOR 2013, THIS FRESH MANCHESTER CLOTHING LABEL TALKS TO REBELICIOUS ABOUT A LOVE FOR GIRLS IN STREET WEAR, AND A RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUALITY IN ALTERNATIVE CULTURE. JOIN OUR TEAM AS THEY GET A WORLD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ‘THE STABLEMASTER’; THE MAN BEHIND HORSEBIRD, ANTHONY KAYE.

Horsebird has been blowing up across the North, and has also been spotted as far as London, Paris and New York. We are all curious; what does Horsebird mean? Ok, this is a funny story actually. It’s a nickname of mine. About a year ago I was watching Britain’s Got Talent and there was a girl on there with a large nose and we thought she looked like a bird. In my drunken state, I brought up the fact that in high school people used to say I looked like a horse with my long face. And then whilst going through the conversation I realized I’ve got a big nose too - like some kind of horsebird. I tried to turn it into ‘Pegasus’ but everyone was like, ‘Nope. Horsebird’. And uh, it kinda stuck. You launched the brand in Manchester in September. What have you done to promote the brand so that it has managed to travel so far so quickly? I’ve got a lot of connections and collaborators in different parts of the country who are into a similar type of thing. It happened through networking and speaking to people who liked the idea... the people who think it’s unique, and who want to represent it themselves. It’s spread organically through word of mouth and social media. And it’s starting to travel, which is a testament to the logo and the look of the brand. Tell us something different about the merchandise that makes it stand out. I wanted to go heavy on branding; I like bold statements. But I also wanted to make stuff that was of a certain quality. I didn’t want to churn out cheap t-shirts and caps and jackets... I wanted to make sure that the quality was prioritised, because I’m not a big fan of disposable fashion. It’s also about who I collaborate with and the things we do to identify the brand, but the main selling point is the quality.

FASHION & BEAUTY

Speaking of quality, some recognizable faces have been spotted wearing Horsebird. Who has access to the brand right now? At the moment there’s a few people who I’ve spoken to individually, like Charlotte De Carle and Jesse Burgess, both big models down in London who are recognisable from e4’s Dirty Sexy things. But it’s for everybody who believes in it... anyone who likes the idea of it and where it’s going. I am interested in the individuals themselves, what they’re about, and people who are interested in creative industries. I’ve had to turn down a few famous people from reality TV shows when they’ve asked for a few freebies, because that isn’t what we’re about. It’s about fashion for people who are into fashion. You’ve been talking about releasing some designs based on your collaborations with other artists. Is there anything exciting in the pipeline? There’s a couple of exciting things in the pipeline. Some of them I can’t talk about at the moment, but I think I can mention a collaboration with our very own Toria Brightside. I’ll be releasing a line of t-shirts featuring some of her amazing shots, which are hopefully coming out early next year. I think this gives the brand another side. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into one area, and I think what Toria brings to the table is something that I like and I want to get involved with. I’ve got a couple of other ideas, 38 REBELICIOUS MAGAZINE

a couple of other people I’ve been speaking to, but the main focus right now is getting a line out with Toria. Can’t wait for that! We’ve seen guys and girls wearing Horsebird T-shirts in so many ways and across so many styles. We want to know, will there be any runway shows in the coming future to showcase ways to wear the brand? Yes, runway shows are something I definitely wanna do. There are some plans for next year. I couldn’t give you any dates for them at the moment, but I think runway shows are the perfect opportunity to show off the clothes and express the vision that I have for the brand and its personality. What would you say to our readers about Horsebird’s place in alternative culture? I definitely think there’s a place for Horsebird in alternative culture. What I think is amazing about the alternative fashion community is that there’s a lot of individuals out there with their own style. They think outside the box, and there’s a lot more exciting things coming out of this group that don’t make it into the mainstream. I think that by trying to respect that and get involved with it I’m showing my appreciation for the alternative fashion industry. We can work together with them to make something that looks amazing.

So far you have caps, varsity jackets, T-shirts and polo shirts on the market. Do you have any plans for any other items? Actually a big one is leggings. I’m designing leggings at the moment, so I’m hoping that early next year we can get some of those. I’m also looking at doing some sweatshirts... I’ve got a couple of samples coming in which are looking pretty good. As far as the future goes, I’m open to anything really, but I don’t want to diffuse myself by doing everything. I want to make sure that the stuff that I do is quality, and is good. I don’t want to rush out designs in different mediums, but the next big ones are leggings and sweatshirts. It seems like there are a lot of exciting things in Horsebird’s future. If you could put a Horsebird T-shirt on any historical figure, who would it be and why? Aww that’s a good question. Ok, I’d like to say Guy Fawkes, I think he would be my main man. He always went against the grain and it’d be pretty cool to see a Horsebird T-shirt on a guy on the 5th of November each year as well. I like his style - he was a radical, he knew what’s up. And he’s from the North! Exactly, gotta keep it Northern. http://www.thehorsebird.co.uk/

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT HORSEBIRD? TORIA BRIGHTSIDE: "They have started calling me 'my little pony!' Ant asked me to collaborate on a line of tees with him on step 5 or 6 of a pub crawl. It was just after I had finished a series featuring beautiful and fascinating female artists. I was looking into putting the images onto tees, even before he asked me... it was nothing short of perfect timing. Ant came up to Leeds to ask my opinion on some sizing options... I saw and felt how exceptional the quality was, and I've been on board with anything and everything ever since. Horsebird are my streetwear homies as far as I'm concerned." HOW DID YOU CREATE THE IMAGES THAT WILL FEATURE ON YOUR T-SHIRTS? "With a lot of love, and dedication. These images are special in that they are the most organic images I have ever made. The original black and white pictures were shot on medium format film, developed by hand, and even printed by hand in a dark room. I submerged them in chemicals and hung them up to dry, one by one. The girls then made the prints into artwork; they told their secrets, and described the poles of their innermost emotions using their portraits as a canvas. Because of the chemicals used in hand printing, they were able to scratch, burn, draw and paint into the chemistry of the pictures themselves. The original prints were scanned because the likeliness is that they will keep reacting, and keep changing as time goes on. If I got the prints out from their hiding place now, I'm sure the artwork would have evolved since they were scanned. They will probably eat themselves up eventually." WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE LAUNCH OF YOUR LINE? "Things are going to go off in a major way. The biggest thing you've ever seen from me, for sure. Expect a huge celebration in Leeds, perhaps even other cities. The cogs are turning behind the scenes... we'll be combining all of our best forces from across the country. I'm thinking of another fashion show to introduce the line in style. I want to return the love that has gone into the girls' portraits, and into Horsebird. I'm thinking Vau Vau Part II. All I know for now is that I want it to be the most fun outfits you have ever seen, and the most secure you've ever felt in yourself. An all round celebration of individuality, and the toast will go to you all."

"IT’S INTERESTING WHAT YOU CAN DO USING YOUR BODY AS THE TOOL!"

What inspired you to take up modelling? The opportunity to create the cool ideas I had in my head and to explore my creative side. It’s interesting what you can do using your body as the tool! What are your favourite styles/themes to shoot? I do mostly latex shootings, but enjoy doing beauty shoots and fashion as well. My favourite is when I really get to go into character and try new poses and expressions whilst working with a great creative team. How would you describe your own personal style? When I’m not modelling I usually wear suits or such since I work in a office. Otherwise I’m pretty comfortable, jeans and a top with a pair of cool boots and red lips to contrast. Are there any makeup/beauty products that you can’t live without? I can’t live without coconut oil! It’s the best beauty product ever. What makes you different to all the other models in the industry today? I’m one of the few that aren’t covered in tattoos. As much as I love them, I think not having so many makes me more versatile. And I like my skin! Also I work really hard and I’m not afraid to try new styles. But I try not to fall in to the trends that a lot of people do. I’m usually appreciated for my curves and fierce attitude in photos. Are there any designers/photographers/other models that you would love to collaborate with one day? I would looove to work with David La Chapelle one day! For sure! And there’s a big list of others.. I would love to work with Bibian Blue and Rachel Freire, and I think that me and Mosh would look cute together =P Where do you hope to be in 5 years? In 5 years I have a big photo studio of my own with different location settings, or a huge house I can decorate and shoot in. Hopefully I have a paysite that is up and running, and can make enough money from modelling and shooting that I can focus on that only. And I want at least two Llamas. www.sistersinister.se MAIN PHOTO: JOAKIM JONSSON, OUTFIT: KAORI’S LATEX DREAMS, MUA: JESSICA LUNDBERG TOP RIGHT: PHOTO: JOSEFINE JÖNSSON, OUTFIT: WESTWARD BOUND BOTTOM LEFT: PHOTO: JOSEFINE JÖNSSON, OUTFIT: NAUCLER DESIGN BOTTOM RIGHT: PHOTO: GEOFF JONES, LATEX: WESTWARD BOUND, EDIT/ MUA: SISTER SINISTER

How did you get started as a photographer? I moved from painting to photography during my university years. I studied fine art but couldn’t really hack the painting side of things so I turned to photography which luckily I adored. Your main pieces of equipment are? I use a Pentax K-R in white and my main lenses are both old film camera lenses bought second hand (costing under £30 for both) which only have manual focus but I make it work and use their effects to ensure I have my own recognizable style. I prefer natural light but I do have a home studio with lights that I also bought secondhand. What are some of the concepts/themes you love to explore? I am always torn between making ethereal dreamy pictures, simple and beautiful; and dark images rich in texture and metaphor. I always want my lighter pictures to be somewhat evocative of a dream or a memory. In my darker images I want them to look somewhat like they could be painted and hung on a wall.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Manray was once quoted as saying “I photograph what I cannot paint and paint what I cannot photograph”. I, myself take a lot of inspiration from Art for my photography, poses, composition and colour especially. I love watching films and reading books to get what I call ‘little ghosts of ideas’ in my head which I then scribble in my sketchbook and develop into larger ideas. With so many trying their hand at being a photographer these days, how do you keep your style unique? I try and pride myself on being a perfectionist and thus I know my editing is meticulous and precise. I also use my artistic training to its advantage - after studying art and art history for so many years I have a good understanding of colour and how to make a good portrait. If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? That’s an interesting question indeed! I’d probably like to photograph anyone who looks like Vivian leigh or Clark Gable as Gone with the Wind is my favourite film of all time. I have no real desire to work with real famous faces, just whomever is beautiful in a unique way. Do you have any major goals you hope to achieve this year? I hope to learn to use Adobe Illustrator, get published more, earn enough money to upgrade my camera, get a book cover published through my agency and learn to control my ever-frizzy hair. www.charistalbotphotography.co.uk MODEL: ALICE CAT

TASCHA DEARING How did you get started as a photographer? I got started about three years ago when I started to explore different art forms, I went through a few and couldn't ďŹ nd anything I was comfortable with. I got my first decent camera when I was 16 and I just haven't stopped playing with it since! I always make sure that having fun is high on the agenda when I take photos.

Your main pieces of equipment are? Currently a Nikon D7000 with a 50mm lens, and photoshop CS5 with a wacom graphics tablet. What are some of the concepts/themes you love to explore? I enjoy doing a range of themes, my all time favourite will probably always be macabre portraits, and I've always wanted to do surrealism photography but never really got round to it! I also do alternative glamour shoots mainly including my good friend and model Lenore. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw most of my inspiration from music and magic. As a huge fan of magicians and alternative music I find these really help to draw out my ideas, sometimes completely out of the blue! I also use locations and people and think of ideas that revolve around them, seeing as I find it a lot easier to create if I have a starting point. With so many trying their hand at being a photographer these days, how do you keep your style unique? I believe my portraits have a unique style and character, mainly due the fact that I heavily process my images in photoshop, usually giving them a cartoon-like quality and also giving me an opportunity to create something eye-catching and different. If you could do a shoot with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? I'd love to do a shoot with German model Ophelia Overdose. She's been my favourite model for a number of years now, and not only is she absolutely gorgeous, but she's very versatile and I honestly believe I wouldn't get a single bad shot! Do you have any major goals you hope to achieve next year? Next year I have tons of stuff I want to do and not just in the area of photography! In fact, I already have a couple of jobs lined up for me which I'm really excited about, so I guess my overall goals for the next year would just be to do those initial plans successfully! tazpire.webs.com MODEL & PHOTOGRAPHER: TASCHA DEARING

What inspired you to take up modelling? I got ideas that I wanted to share with viewer with intermedia of photography. I always get new ideas, because world around us is diversified, and gives a lot of inspiration. It is exciting! What are your favourite styles/themes to shoot? I like fetish, psycho, sci-fi, and experimental shoots. Dark art is also one of my favourite themes, as it is a very rich field for imagination. Psychedelic shoots give me opportunity to create something strange, spooky or weird, and make viewer guess if it is real or not.

How would you describe your own personal style? My style can be described as mix of many styles, with strong influence of fetish, dark, sci-fi, and military. I just can’t put myself in boundaries of only one style. My style always evolves, reflecting new influences or inspirations. Most important thing for me is developing my skills, and elevating my mind. Are there any makeup/beauty products that you can’t live without? I use a lot of make-up and beauty products for my shoots, but most important for me are body-art paint and contact lenses : ) What makes you different to all the other models in the industry today? I pay attention to every shoot, and offer my ideas. I take part in arrangement of every shoot. Also, I can use almost everything around me to create new accessories for shoot, and use everyday stuff in a new way. If necessary, I create accessories for shoot. I like to use make-up or bodyart paint, to create visual effects, and make viewer guess if it is real. Are there any designers/photographers/other models that you would love to collaborate with one day? I enjoy Joy Williams design, and Lacing Lilith London latex collections. They have unique style that is very intriguing to me. I’d love to work with them. I like photography of Marco Ribbe and Alex Blyg, and would like to work with them, as well. Nowadays, I see many creative and inspiring models and make-up artists, such as Below Dark Water, Pure Black Love, Madmoiselle Meli Hi, and others. I enjoy watching work in progress, and evolution of some artists. I respect people who put a lot of efforts in their shoots or other projects. Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
