It was if Ruth Gallace opened her pantry, picked out a few items and threw them into the beaker in an attempt to get the right taste. The task of developing a new range of ciders was more scientific than a kitchen raid for one Victorian enterprise. However, food is an important ingredient to the latest items on offer from Cheeky Rascal Cider – and that doesn’t include the fruit the operation carefully manipulates into their bottles. Gallace, the chief executive of Rebello Wines, which owns the cider business, wanted a series of drinks that would complement Melbourne’s urban street meal scene. After all, Rebello’s operation in the nearby Mornington Peninsula had noticed great success in wine and food matching. https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/lifestyle/a/25681265/a-cheeky-twist-to-cider/

So Cheeky Rascal Cider developed a range of special beverages that are to be enjoyed as you eat. “I was sitting in a little cocktail bar one day having a capriosca and the mixologist threw in a bit of chilli - and it really got me thinking about how we could play around with our cider, and how it would be a perfect match with some really great street food.” “We got together with our senior cider maker and spent hours playing around with some ingredients, tasting and experimenting, before we found just the right combination of flavours. We wanted to create something fresh and vibrant which brings people together ... a quality cider, but one that is created for that casual last minute dining experience.” Cheeky Rascal are now distributing a Vietnamese cider of strawberry, lychee and apple, a Nashi cider to perfectly match your favourite Japanese; apple lime mint with chilli inspired by Mexican, plum ginger pear for Chinese and Blood Orange lemoncello pear to partner with Italian.

The Sip put the Italian variety through its paces and found the style was a winner with a pasta dinner. “Cider and craft beer have emerged as a surprising category in complementing street food and the two movements are really coming together. Authentic eateries are now seeing how they are really adding to the flavour and experience, and are excited about the concept of having a cider to specifically pair with their food,” Gallace said. The seasonal series will kick off with Cheeky Rascal ‘Mexican’ and ‘Italian’ launched in BWS and Dan Murphy’s stores nationwide with the Vietnamese going into a variety of eateries.
