Aussie berry lovers will finally be able to buy home-grown frozen products.
Australia's first commercial home-grown berries are set to hit supermarket shelves in June. But it's going to come at a cost. In the wake of the hepatitis A outbreak in contaminated berries grown in China, an Australian company based on the Mornington Peninsula has decided to enter the market. "In light of what's happened, we thought we'd take the opportunity to bring an Australian product to the market," Matilda's Berries CEO Ruth Gallace told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive. "Our products will be a couple more dollars expensive but I think the Australian public now has a great understanding as to why Australian products are a bit more expensive."

Ms Gallace said Australia's strict regulations when it came to health, safety and farming meant consumers could be confident they were eating a safe product. "We've got the best growing practices in the world," she said. "We've got such stringent controls on the way we go about things and food safety standards that they can buy with confidence and be sure it's a safe product."
