SoShiok: Japanese Mee Pok Man
Tickets to Beerfest Asia 2014 available from Feb 10 The sixth Beerfest Asia returns next month and beer-lovers can look forward to guzzling a wide range of new and unusual craft beers and ciders, specially brought in for the annual festival. The list of more than 400 tipples include Italian beer 32 Via Dei Birrai Admiral; Cheeky Rascal Methode Traditionelle Apple Cider from Australia; Obolon Zlata Praha, a light pilsner beer from Ukraine; and British black ale Black Betty. The beer bonanza runs from June 12 to 15 at the Marina Promenade and tickets are available from Sistic. Ticket prices start at $20 a day and each ticket includes one free welcome beer from selected booths at the event. Beerfest Asia is co-owned by music lifestyle company Timbre Group and Sphere Exhibits, a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings. Besides beer, festivalgoers can kick back with wines and whiskies, or attend beer-related workshops. Soak in the atmosphere with live music sets or wind down for the day at the Comedy Lounge with stand-up comedy acts. For families with children, the Comedy Lounge will be transformed into a Brew Kids Playard on June 15 (Sunday). This is a recreation room for four- to 12-year-old children and will feature an indoor bouncy castle and craft activities. On the last day of the festival (June 15), there will be a beer auction for those looking to pick up beers by the carton, including limited- edition ones. A home delivery service will be available from the festival grounds. Users of The Straits Times SoShiok app can win pairs of tickets to Beerfest Asia. Up for grabs are 10 pairs of standard tickets - five for June 12 and five for June 15. Each pair of tickets is worth $60. To take part in the contest, register with the free food app and look for this article, with the headline Win Tickets To Beerfest in the News section. Post in the Comments section, saying in at least 20 words what beer you like and why. Winners will be notified via the e-mail address used to log into the SoShiok app. The contest ends on June 4. Beerfest Asia's festival director Edward Chia is looking to welcome the biggest crowd so far to the event this year.

The bemusing sight of a Japanese chef engrossed with preparing the perfect bowl of mee pok in a hawker centre has drawn both stares as well as long queues. For 47year-old Japanese hawker Naoji Kuribara, his bestselling item is mee pok, or better known as 'Bak Chor Mee'. Mr Kuribara, who took over Ah Hoe Mee Pok in Clementi, has opened his second stall at Block 713. He â&#x;Š learnt his skills from his master, Singaporean Eric Chia, Durian Myths SoShiok!
