Message from the Publisher

Dear Readers: I would like to wish a very happy fall to all. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful season as much as I am. Don’t forget to stop and take a moment to appreciate nature’s changes and bounty. Our lives are hectic enough, and getting more so day by day, as technology moves forward by leaps and bounds. Yet it is imperative that we keep pace with new technology, thus creating even busier lives. Additionally, because we live amidst this digitally active society, we become increasingly dependent on electronic devices—smart phones, tablets, e-readers, laptops, and more. For good or bad, the internet has transformed both our lives and our business practices. Interaction and contact with our friends, our working colleagues, our customers and our clients has been permanently altered. Likewise, the internet has forever changed our printing habits and behaviors. And this change has been substantial. Not surprisingly, it has become a powerful driver of global economic growth, especially in these tumultuous times. In the United States, it accounts for a larger slice of the GDP than the federal government. In China, it's among the top six industry sectors. By 2016, researchers predict that three billion people, half of the world's population, will be online. And the majority of them will be using mobile devices. This trend is significant. To keep up with its speed and direction, we need to have a keen understanding of the scope of this growth and to remain open to business development in cyber space. The courage to do this, and in many cases the courage to change, is our focus of the month. Be sure to read “Courage to Change” by Ronelle Ingram on p. 14; “MSE: Remaining True to Core Principals While Adapting to Tumultuous Times” by Luke Goldberg on p. 18; “Canon and Lexmark Litigation Leads to Uncertainty in the Printer Toner Cartridge Industry” by Peter S. Bauman on p. 22; “How to Tackle China’s Burgeoning Mobile Commerce Market” by Curt Keller on p. 38; “Remanufacturing the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color M551 Black and Color Toner Cartridges” by Mike Josiah on p. 66; and “Effective Print Management” by Luella Fernandes and Clive Longbottom on p. 23. I leave you this month with these words to ponder: Explore your growth and create your niche by changing the way you see the world. Happy Reading,

Canon and Lexmark Litigation Leads to Uncertainty in the Printer Toner Cartridge Industry By Peter S. Bauman, Esq. The industry for remanufactured printer toner cartridges has flourished for years as users purchase replacements from third party suppliers who fill a need and offer print supplies at prices significantly lower than those offered by the original equipment manufacturers (or OEMs). There has been litigation by OEMs in the past, premised on third party suppliers infringing upon patent r ights in the cartridges being sold, but the manufacturers seem to have been satisfied in picking and choosing their targets, while permitting the broader industry of third party suppliers to survive. Things have changed, however. Perhaps it’s the difficult world economy and generally shrinking market for printer cartridges that has led to a more aggressive strategy in recent years. Now, companies like Canon and Lexmark are taking more significant steps to enforce IP rights and shut down third party suppliers of remanufactured printer toner cartridges, whether they are those based outside the U.S., or those based in the U.S. who resell cartridges originally sold internationally. Canon is perhaps the biggest fish in the sea, as its cartridges are used not only in Canon printers, but those of HP as well. HP,

22

though, has long held a significant share of the computer printer market. The broadest salvo fired by Canon against third party suppliers came in March 2012 when it filed a patent infringement suit at the U.S. International Trade Commission and in Federal Court naming more than thirty remanufacturing companies. Ac c o rd i n g t o a re c e n t a r t i c l e i n Actionable Intelligence, Canon is seeking a General Exclusion Order at the Trade Commission, which would “ bar the i m p o r t a t i on of al l infr inging SKUs, regardless of manufacturer,” a result that “would have a chilling effect on the entire aftermarket industry for toner supplies in the United States.” Lexmark, which also filed suit against foreign third party suppliers at the U.S. International Trade Commission in 2010, has more recently been pursuing U.S. toner cartridge remanufacturers, sending letters demanding that they settle or risk being added to current infringement litigation in U.S. Federal Court. [Actionable Intelligence, June 5, 2012]. The litigation in this industr y has significant potential impact on users of remanufactured cartridges who could find their current suppliers out of business, or

raising prices after agreeing to settlements with Canon, Lexmark and the like. Additionally, unfulfilled orders may be at risk, as well as IT budgets that assume cartridge prices which may be unrealistic in the current environment. These and other risks should be addressed by companies who contract with third party suppliers. Contractual indemnification for losses and the cost of defense against lawsuits brought by the Canon’s of the world is certainly advisable but may be insufficient to fully protect users. Furthermore, a review of corporate insurance policies and risk management related to contractual breach, economic loss and lawsuit defense also seems warranted as part of an overall strategy for dealing with these issues. For over 35 years small businesses, major corporations, public entities, individuals and insurance companies have depended on Tharpe & Howell, LLP, to deliver pragmatic, innovative, cost-effective civil litigation and transactional solutions. Outstanding Women in the Consumables Industry Part 2 in the series

Cynthia Khor See Kiem Managing Director, PTS Technology Sdn Bhd

Personal Experience

We provide full customer satisfaction. We assure the best quality and cost effectiveness. We excel at product innovation to suit customer needs. PTS Technology Sdn Bhd was incorporated in 2002. Since its inception, we have established several subsidiaries, where we are committed to provide total printing solutions, including after sales service support to our valuable customers.

28

I started a recharging business in 1998 because I thought that this was not only a good business to be in but also because it was a good thing to help reduce plastic waste in K.L. Malaysia. Having started out with a dream, and no experience, I had only passion to make that dream become a reality. My passion for both business and the environment made me determined to succeed as an entrepreneur. During the earlier years, I saw a great opportunity in the toner and raw materials market in Malaysia. After starting the business with my personal financing of USD$2,000, I gradually expanded and, in 2002, incorporated PTS Technology Sdn Bhd. At the time, we had grown to an operation that was thirty times larger than when we started, including the establishment of several subsidiaries. I transformed from a trader to an assembler, servicing the entire recharged laser toner cartridge and copier market. This included the important component of after-sales ser vice support and a commitment to provide total printing solutions for our valued customers. Additionally, at the center of my

strong belief and value system is integrity. Never would we compromise our core values in order to make a profit. As time went on, I was determined to make my business a success, not only for my own personal reasons but for all of our loyal “company family members. These are not merely employees; they strive for top quality as much as I do. Many people on our loyal staff have been with me since our inception; by my side though all the inevitable difficult times. Today, the PTS group of companies consists of well-trained people with vast experience and expertise, who have undergone extensive training in product knowledge and innovative ways to offer the best service to our customers. Throughout the entire existence of the company, I continued to explore new innovations and marketing strategies. Currently, PTS Technology Sdn Bhd is exporting to several countries throughout Asia. There is one final point I would like to make. Aside from business endeavors, I believe that it is important for one to give back to the community. As such, I am committed to remaining actively involved in community services.

MARKET TRENDS

Intensity of Competition Heats Up in Indonesia's Inkjet Cartridge Market Source: IDC he inkjet cartridge market in Indonesia grew 21.6% year-ony e a r ( Yo Y ) , reaching 8.4 million units in 2Q12. Due to strong foreign direct investments, increasing number of SMBs and a rise in the income levels of Indonesians, more and more enterprises and households are purchasing printers and this in turn is driving the growth of the inkjet cartridges market. Out of the total inkjet cartridge market in 2Q12, compatible brands contributed more than 6 million units, which is 71.5% of the total market size. However, in terms of value, original products held 77.1% of the total market share, due to price differences between the products. Vendors producing compatible cartridges are setting up new manufacturing plants, improving the quality of their products and extending their market reach. As a result, these vendors are preferred by price-sensitive Indonesians and the IDC believes that these vendors will retain their market size in the near future. Price-cautious consumers are also the reason inkjet cartridges are popular and dominating the consumables market. They are currently holding on to close to 90% market share as compared to laser toners. “OEMs are now challenging after-market players on print cost per page (CPP). They have launched printers with ink tank systems as well as economic consumables, which have reduced CPP and initiated a war for market share particularly in the inkjet business," says Ikhwan Muhammad, Associate Market Analyst for Peripherals Research at IDC Indonesia. Across compatible products, continuous ink supply systems (CISS) is showing strong growth trends. In 2Q12, CISS held nearly 47.3% of the inkjet consumables market (see Figure 1), a growth of 38.0% YoY. CISS vendors are using social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to reach out to their consumers. They are also offering after-sale support and free accessories such as a damper, cartridge vacuum, arm support and waste bottle, etc., to their customers. All these initiatives have increased the acceptability of CISS products in the country. In the next few months, IDC expects Indonesia's printer consumables market to heat up as both OEMs and manufacturers of compatible cartridges are expected to focus on providing lower CPP to win both consumers and corporate users alike.

New Technology: Sewage Waste to Plastic A pioneering, g ro u n d b re a k i n g innovation will enable turning municipal sewage sludge into raw materials, to be used by paper and plastic industries around the world. The innovative technology developed by Applied Cleantech, an Israeli company founded by Refael Aharon, will enable turning the solids in municipal sewage systems into raw materials for the plastic industry around the world. This revolutionary way of thought, along with scientific research, led over the past few years to this technology's development which enables sewage sludge to be used as a base for raw materials that are later sold back to the industry. The technology is applied by way of a compact, automatic and efficient facility that recycles solids from raw sewage and turns them into high-quality consumer products through a continuous process (SRS- Sewage Recycling System). At the end of the process, sewage solids are turned into high quality, clean and environmentally friendly raw materials, thus naming the purification facility to a manufacturer with extra "green" points. Aside from the raw materials created at the end of the process, the new plants assist in reducing regional sewage purification plant loads by about 35%. As a result, purification plants enjoy reduced energy consumption and reduced operational and maintenance costs in their water cleaning process in favor of reuse. In addition, sewage recycling provides three major benefits. First, reducing regular operational costs by approximately 30%, as well as gaining raised capacity. Second, manufacturing and selling high quality consumer goods by utilizing sewage materials. And third, reducing greenhouse gases, thus preventing environmental hazards. Applying this system will allow turning purification facilities into a true asset as a source of income and environmental contribution. The company's development was intended to provide a solution for issues in sewage care. Today, a certain percentage of the massive amount of waste produced by human beings (solid municipal waste) is cleared through garbage systems to landfills, and some is cleared through the sewage system through sewage purification facilities. The raw sewage that reaches the sewage purification facilities contains suspended solids, soluble solids, minerals, oils, and toxic compounds. Speaking in environmental terms, sludge is currently considered one of the major issues that needs to be solved. Dr. Refael Aharon, CEO and founder of Applied Cleantech states, "The revolution is in regarding these solids not as waste that must be hidden, consumed by bacteria, or buried, but as a resource and base for raw materials that is sold back to the industry. For the first time ever, this technology is able to recycle solids in wastewater and turn them into raw materials that can be used to manufacture paper and plastic. It is currently being utilized in a few cities around the world, and is in advanced negotiation phases with municipalities and investors in Europe and the United States. InfoTrends Report on Tablet Trend Over the years, a variety of devices have been introduced that enable users to stay connected without being tethered to a desktop. Some of these connected devices offer functionalities that rival those of personal computers, and offer the added benefit of being wireless and portable. Tablets in particular have been gaining traction with the share of users more than doubling between 2011 and 2012. InfoTrends’ Smartphones, Tablets, and Connected TVs: Changing the Digital Imaging Landscape report analyzes findings from a survey of more than 1,300 U.S. consumers about their use of smartphones, tablets, and connected TVs for a variety of business and recreational tasks. In this survey, InfoTrends asked tablet non-owners when they expect to purchase their next tablet. Nearly 36% of non-owners expected to purchase their first tablet in less than a year. Those under the age of 35 were particularly likely to purchase a tablet in less than a year, as were respondents who classified themselves as Early Technology Adopters and Hobbyist/Advanced Hobbyist photographers. “Tablet vendors should prepare for the influx of mainstream consumers,” says Alan Bullock, Associate Director of InfoTrends’ Connected Imaging Trends Service. “Although the adoption of tablets is high among affluent Early Adopters, the Mainstream Adopters who are beginning to enter the market will have different needs and expectations than their tech-savvy counterparts.” He adds that ease-of-use and convenience will be paramount, and competitive prices will likely play a key role in the decision-making process.

Printer Stocks: To Buy or Not to Buy? By now, most of us know that printers have slowed down with the rise of the smart phones and tablets. But still, there are some investors out there who have faith in the printing industry and are considering buying printer stocks. The common sense advice is to know what you are buying. Here’s a quick look at how printer stocks are doing. HP admittedly expects a big slow down in it earnings. This is due not only to the overall global economy but also to what is going on internally in the company. Most investors know that the company has had different CEOs in the past few years. The numbers show that although HP’s printing revenue dropped 2.7% last quarter, its operating profit is up 8%, and the printing division accounted for $949 million of the company’s $3.1 billion in operating income. Looking at other printing stocks, Lexmark is down 3.07% to $21.13, with a market capitalization of $1.49 billion. The stock is down 36.1%YTD, and down 49.1% for its 5-year period. Canon stocks are down 4.34% to $31.77, with a market capitalization of $37.21 billion. The stock is down 27.9% YTD, and 41.5% for its 5-year period. How to Tackle China’s Burgeoning Mobile Commerce Market By Curt Keller

Curt Keller is CEO and founder of one of the world’s leading, Web-based email marketing services, Benchmark Email. While Benchmark’s client base ranges from work-at-home travel agents to large, multinational companies, Mr. Keller remains f iercely dedicated to addressing the email and online marketing challenges facing small and mid-sized businesses. A pioneer in the realm of permission-based marketing, Mr. Keller started Benchmark Email in early 2004 and quickly grew the Southern California-based company from a three-person operation to a major International player with services for people in India, China, South America, Germany and Japan. Benchmark currently remains a member of two of the industry’s most exclusive consortium, the Email Sender & Provider Coalition and Returnpath.net. A vocal advocate for good, industry-wide email marketing practices and standards, Mr. Keller is a regular blogger for Allbusiness.com and Imediaconnection.com. C h i n a ’s m o b i l e c o m m e r c e m a r k e t is undergoing a period of dizzying growth. Benefiting from the extremely rapid adoption of smartphones and a nationwide 3G network, as well as marked improvements in the overall user experience and internet access charges which have been dropping precipitously, mobile commerce in China is on track to become a major driver of the country’s economic progress. The number of Chinese citizens who are considering their mobile devices to be an indispensable factor of their modern lifestyle continues to increase by the day. With this proliferating reliance on smartphones and tablets, an increasing number of Chinese users are placing more trust in the secured transactions offered by third parties, thus setting the foundation for the massive move to mobile commerce. 150 million 3G users & 1.2 billion to go With worldwide mobile web adoption rates running more than eight times faster than the internet as a whole did during the dotcom boom era, it is not surprising that Asian markets are demonstrating some stunning growth in this field. 3G subscriptions in China increased by 172% and, to put this figure into perspective, you can compare it on the low end to the USA’s 26% rate and on the high end to India’s amazing 1050% rate. There seems to be no question whatsoever that there is still more than enough market to expand within, as China’s 3G penetration rate is only 11.3% which translates to approximately 150 million subscribers with 1.2 billion still to go. Japan’s penetration rate currently stands at 95% so, if that percentage is extrapolated to China, it would equal 1 billion 283 million

38

people, which is four times the entire population of the United States. Within six months, the market is expected to burgeon to an amazing 250 million subscribers which in itself is greater than the entire population of Indonesia. The figures generated by China’s mobile expansion are truly astounding. China Unicom has nearly 50 million 3G and 160 million 2G subscribers which makes them larger than the United States’ Verizon and AT&T combined. That is even more aweinspiring when you consider that China Unicom is the country’s number two carrier! Nearly half a billion Chinese engaging in mobile commerce The ongoing integration between the internet and telecom services in China is continuing at an extremely rapid pace. By mid-2012, China’s Wireless City initiative had expanded to a total of 321 cities in 30 provinces, covering over 26 million users. This project creates a platform for an entire city, enabling access to a sophisticated multi-level wireless network. But it is far from the only way for Chinese citizens to access the internet through their mobile devices and the potential that this massive growth presents to Asian-focused digital print technology and consumables online marketers cannot possibly be understated. According to iResearch China, the value of mobile commerce in China was RMB 19 billion (US $3 billion) in 2010, growing to RMB 48 billion (US $7.6 billion) in 2011, is expected to reach RMB 121 billion (US $19.2 billion) by the end of 2012 and is projected to top RMB 219 billion (US $34.8 billion) in 2013, at which time a total of 480 million Chinese subscribers are expected to be engaging in mobile commerce

transactions. This represents a total market which is approximately equivalent to the entire population of the European Union. Mobile commerce is outshining value added services & gaming China’s mobile internet industry has been attracting some sizeable investment with the total reaching RMB 2.4 billion (US $378 million) in just the first six months of 2012, representing a year-on-year increase of 18 percent. Mobile commerce is the preferred investment area in the industry, outshining wireless value added services and mobile gaming. There seems to be no end to the potential to be found within the Chinese mobile market as there are even extensive opportunities available in the country’s mobile map market which is expected to reach 287 million by the end of 2012, and a literally incredible 600 million by 2015. Mobile market tools currently offered by 2/3rds of telecom & financial services When it comes to market share, Taobao Wireless, Jingdong Mobile, Vancl Mobile, and Tencent are the big four in the Chinese mobile commerce arena. The primary mobile vendor at this time is Taobao with 75.6% of total revenues, followed distantly by 360buy with 6.2% and Tencent at 3.9%. However, that does not mean that these companies are alone among Chinese companies eyeing mobile commerce as a major revenue driver. The Deloitte consultancy polled over one hundred market leaders in the Chinese wireless telecoms, financial services, and payment sectors and found that over twothirds currently offered mobile commerce tools, with much of the balance expecting to introduce them in the near future.

Baidu is maneuvering itself into a leading market position Baidu, China’s biggest search engine, is investing 25% of their total research and development on mobile to capture as much of the mushrooming market for mobile advertising as possible and has just released a browser specifically for mobile devices which run Google’s Android operating system. Baidu expects that handset makers will preinstall their browser on 80% of all smartphones sold in the country by the end of 2012, overtaking rivals UCWeb which has a 28.9% market share and Tencent Holdings which currently holds a 16.5% market share. The search engine giant has also been in takeover talks with UCWeb to attempt to consolidate its position even further. It is interesting to note that UCWeb has been considering holding an initial public offering in the USA. Further, Baidu’s efforts to capitalize on mobile commerce is not limited to browser development as Baidu is also investing RMB 10 billion (US $1.6 billion) in a cloud computing data center in order to facilitate remote online data storage to both application developers and users.

Mobile payments seeking NFC economies of scale & a national standard Along with mobile commerce naturally comes the question of mobile payments. Earlier in 2012, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the latest Five-Year Plan for E-commerce, with a stated emphasis on the establishment of a comprehensive set of mobile payment standards in order to promote the development of mobile commerce. While Paypal is still awaiting a license to operate in China, the five major companies currently engaging in bringing the future of Near Field Communications (NFC) and other advanced payment technologies to the market include China UnionPay, AliPay, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. Some of the problems which seem to be holding back a swifter development in this market include the relatively high per unit costs of NFC as well as the lack of a unified technical standard. It would not serve the market well to have competing standards adopted across China as then the user of a

specific network could only make purchases at the retailers which are signed up with that network, creating extensive consumer confusion and retailer frustration. 4G is coming to China… but not quite yet China is currently a 2.5G- and 3G-market but that is expected to change rapidly. China has been holding trials of the 4G LTE TDD (Long-Term Evolution TimeDivision Duplex) technology for well over a year and China’s largest carrier, China Mobile, is expected to become the leader in offering this facility to the overall market in the nation. However, most observers do not expect the 4G technologies to be widely available in the country until the end of 2013, at the earliest. In sum, digital print technology and consumables online marketers can expect to benefit profusely from the remarkable growth in the Chinese market if it is approached with tenacity, perseverance and an onus on quality. The sky is the limit!

The Future of HP HP’s former luster in being a leader in the technological industry is slowly fizzling out. Investors and analysts believe the company might be seeing a bear rather than a bull at the end of the tunnel. The past decade showed that HP focused on buying companies rather than focusing on research and development to fuel its market share. It spent $12 billion in acquiring Autonomy, a UK-based software

40

company. Overall, the company spent $60 billion in other major deals over the last decade. Today, HP is trailing behind in terms of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets, and the company has $20 billion in net debt where their total equity market capitalization is $33 billion. HP’s revenue comes mainly from PC, IT services, printing and enterprise servers, storage and networking sales, which account

for 90% of the company’s sales. But as consumers are leaning towards tablets instead of PCs, and not printing as much, what lies ahead for HP is anybody's guess. HP CEO, Meg Whitman, said that the company will develop mobile devices to keep up with the market. But it might be a little too late for HP. Source: Robert Cyran, http://in.reuters.com, 09/28/12

MSE Marks 15th Anniversary of First Remanufactured Color Laser Cartridge VAN NUYS, Calif. – MSE, a high-quality remanufacturer and an aftermarket leader in technological innovation, marked the fifteenth anniversary of its introduction of the first aftermarket color laser cartridge. 15 years ago, at the Comdex trade show, Yoel Wazana, president, MSE, proudly displayed the first ever aftermarket color cartridge, a remanufactured Lexmark Optra C. At that time, industry doomsayers had predicted that color would be another fatal obstacle for the aftermarket. Today, through heavy investment, education and support, MSE leads the industry in helping dealers capture a larger share of the 20 billiondollar color opportunity. MSE’s Advanced Color Technologies® (ACT), highlighted by the revolutionary Secondary Cleaning System™ (SCS), addresses colorrelated issues and the result is superior-quality aftermarket cartridges. SCS is an additional critical component -- not present in the original cartridge -- that keeps the PCR clean and prevents excess toner from transferring onto the OPC at any time during the life of the cartridge. “We have come a long way in our understanding of color technology, and we continue to evolve in our expertise and ability to provide a true alternative to the OEM,” says Yoel Wazana, president, MSE. “Our SCS technology shows just how far we have come in addressing the issues that have lessened the aftermarket share for so long.” Ask your MSE sales rep for more information about Advanced Color Technologies® (ACT). Founded in 1994 by Yoel Wazana, MSE is the largest remanufacturer with U.S.-based production facilities and a leading-edge innovator in the marketplace. MSE pioneered the process of Intelligent ReEngineering™, which employs patented technologies, proprietary processes, and stringent testing methodologies that result in the market’s best alternative to high-cost OEM print consumables. MSE has sales and distribution in Canada, Europe (UK and the Netherlands), Israel, Brazil, California, and Pennsylvania.

4inkjets.com Debuts New Eco-Friendly Printer Line in the United States After over a decade of operation as a remanufacturer and millions of sales, Seine Technology is making their Pantum printer available in the United States through a partnership with 4inkjets.com. With its September release, the P2000 series enters the landscape of monochrome laser printers with ambitions to take over some of the market-share of industry leaders like HP, Brother, and Samsung through a marketing initiative created specifically for the American consumer. 4inkjets is presenting the Pantum printer in the US for the first time after the machines had an impressive debut in Latin America and across Asia, including Russia and Israel. The pairing of 4inkjets.com and S eine Technology is an appropriate one, considering that both have achieved success in the printing consumables field in their respective nations. Also fitting is the pairing of the new Pantum printer and the internet retailer known for carrying environmentally friendly printing options such as remanufactured ink cartridges. Both of the initial printer offerings boast low-emissions and ecofriendly construction. 4inkjets.com, which has long been known as a top choice among online retailers for printer toner and ink cartridges, is uniquely positioned to present this new line of printers to American customers. "We know which printer each of our customers has; we also have a good idea of how long they have had their printer," said 4inkjets.com President, Aaron Leon. "So, we know, customer by customer, who will actually save money by buying a Pantum printer," added Leon. The message of marketing efforts on 4inkjets. com is centered on the concept of significant savings, both upfront and in the long term. At just under $100, and with options in toner cartridges ranging from 1.8 to 3.5 cents per page, the Pantum P2000 printer series is expected to appeal to users with medium to heavy printing needs and a need for durability at a low price. Kodak Ink Continues to Sell While Kodak has filed bankruptcy and is no longer manufacturing printers, they will continue to sell ink for its printers, honor the warranties, and provide customer service support to its existing customers. It is expected that Kodak intends to continue this for a few more years, or according to the lifespan of the printers that have been sold, and as long as there is still consumer demand for its ink. Customer service still remains to be a priority for Kodak. Source: Melissa Riofrio, www.pcworld.com, 10/3/12

Independent Managed Print Service Alliance Formed IMPSGA (Independent MPS Global Alliance), was founded on October 8th, 2012 for premium managed print service (MPS) providers across Europe to work together on best practice, commercial synergies and cross border service delivery. Twickenham, UK —— The founding members of the IMPSGA announced the formation of the alliance today at Transform 2012, the premier event of the MPS community. The first of its kind in Europe, it groups managed serviceorientated value added resellers whose main business is focussed on delivering independent MPS to mid-sized corporations and large enterprises. Research (1) shows that only 31% of large enterprises and 15% of mid market businesses prefer OEM delivered MPS solutions. Thus, there is not only a strong preference for independent providers to serve this market, but many MPS users have requirements in more than one country. The Alliance will serve this growing market by providing freedom and choice for the customer that has not been available internationally until now. The members are convinced that this freedom will better answer end users’ needs across Europe, who will in turn select Alliance members for their requirements. Alliance members can expect to drive more business abroad as well as at home. The founding members of the Alliance are, in alphabetical order: • Ergo based in Dublin, Ireland • M2 based in London, UK • MR Daten Technik based in Nurnberg, Germany • Pulsar Technologies based in Madrid, Spain • Print Partners based in Prague, Czech Republic • Rio Managed Services based in Paris, France The Alliance meets regularly to review and share best practices, and has recently completed a cost per print review across Europe on key branded models. It has also conducted software reviews, including one for mobile print software. The intent of the Alliance is to bring clarity around what MPS truly is and delivers, in an environment unbiased by other business requirements that may impair the delivery performance. Supporting Quote: "The true values of MPS have become unclear over recent years with a wide range of meanings across the OEMs and independent channels. This global international partnership has been brought together to re-define the core values and drive best practice, service excellence and leading agnostic solutions to customers,” said John Taylor, CEO of M2, based in London, UK. About IMPSGA: The Alliance has, as of today, more than 105,000 devices under management, with a breadth of service delivery on 12 brands. The Alliance will continue to expand over the coming months with the addition of more partners in new geographical regions. One of the founding principles of the Alliance is that each member has exclusivity within its home territory. The Alliance is moderated by a network of International Document Strategy Advisors across the Globe. (1) Quocirca research commissioned by M2, the UK representative of the Alliance.

Remanufacturing the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color M551 Black and Color Toner Cartridges By Mike Josiah, Technical Director of UniNet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. First released in August 2011, the M551 series of color laser printers are based on a 33ppm black and color, 1200 x 1200 Dpi engine. (3600 DPI with RET). The M551 cartridges are an all in one type cartridge that consists of the toner supply, drum, and waste chamber. New machines ship with full “A” style LY cartridges not starters. Note also that the drum faces up not down when placed in the printer. Because of this machine layout, we will take a moment and run through the printer theory before we get started. These cartridges are basically a rectangular shaped cartridge that comes with a toner seal and a snap-on drum cover across the bottom to protect the drum. See Figure 1. These printers also have a separate waste bottle to collect the waste toner from the ITB (Image Transfer Belt)

to one-another and the printer. Note that while this is still a single pass system, the layout is completely different from any previous Canon/HP machines. The laser units are on the bottom, the cartridges are at an angle, and the ITB is on top. Figure 3 shows the complete image formation process

Figure 3

The Color toner cartridge printing process happens in s series of stages or steps. For the purpose of this article, we will call them stages. Figure 2 shows the basic layout of the cartridges and how they relate

In the first stage, light from the preexposure LED strikes the drum to remove any residual charges from the drums surface. See Figure 4. Then the Primary Charge Roller (PCR) places a uniform negative DC voltage on the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative

Figure 5 In the second stage, the laser beam is fired onto a rotating mirror (called the scanner). As the mirror rotates, the beam is reflected into a set of focusing lenses. The beam then strikes the drums surface, reducing the negative charge and leaving a latent electrostatic image on the drum. The areas where the laser did not strike the drum will retain the higher negative charge. See Figures 6 & 7

actual development. In the toner charging stage, the toner stirring blade turns inside the hopper. As it turns, friction causes a negative potential to develop on the toner. In addition, a foam feed roller brings the toner to the developer roller and also places a negative charge on the toner. These two charges help ensure a uniform charge on the toner. Once the toner is properly charged, the toner will coat the developer roller. The toner is also held onto and attracted to the developer roller by another negative DC bias voltage. This voltage is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting and causes either more or less toner to be attracted by the developer roller. This in turn will either increase or decrease the print density. The amount of toner on the developer roller is controlled by the doctor blade, which uses pressure to keep the amount of toner on the roller constant. As the laser exposed areas of the OPC Drum approach the developer roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s surface due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed areas of the OPC drum. See Figure 8

Continued

As the ITB passes the Secondary transfer roller, the positive charge is picked up, and draws the negatively charged toner off the Belt and onto the paper. Note that this entire process is upside down from all previous Hp engines. The ITB and transfer rollers are on top of the OPC drum, not underneath it. See Figure 9

Figure 9 The paper separates from the ITB belt as the belt reaches the top of its path and turns back down to start the process again. The static charge on the back of the paper is decreased with static charge eliminator. This helps stabilize the paper feed, and also prevents toner flares (spots) under low temperature and low humidity conditions. See Figures 10 & 11

Figure 6 Figure 8

Figure 7 The third or developing stage is where the toner is developed on the drum by the developing section (or supply chamber), which contains the toner particles. The development stage is actually made up of two steps: toner charging, and the

68

The fourth stage is the transfer stage. This is where there are some large differences from monochrome printers and also from other color lasers. In the Primary transfer stage the transfer roller which is located directly opposite each OPC drum, places a positive DC bias charge on the back of the ITB or Image Transfer Belt. Each toner cartridge has a separate transfer charge roller. The image is transferred from the drum directly to the ITB. This process is repeated for each color cartridge in the following order: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black. At the same time, the paper is moving between the Secondary transfer roller and the ITB.

Figure 10

Figure 11 In the fifth stage, the image is then fused onto the paper by the fuser assembly. The fuser Assembly is comprised of the

103 Issue November 2012 upper heating assembly and lower pressure roller. The lower pressure roller presses the page up into the upper heating assembly which then melts the toner into the paper. This heating assembly consists of a flexible sleeve with a ceramic heating coil inside. This type of fuser affords “instant on” fusing with little to no wait time, and low power consumption. See Figure 12

recovery blade guides it into the waste chamber. See Figure 15

Figure 16 Figure 15 Printer Calibration:

Figure 12 ITB Cleaning: The ITB is cleaned by the ITB cleaning blade. The ITB wiper blade scrapes off the residual toner and an auger moves the toner to the toner collection box. See Figures 13 & 14

At the start of all this is the cartridge detection process, toner level detection, and then the calibration cycle. The printer will calibrate itself whenever the printer is turned on (Within 15 minutes), when a new toner cartridge is installed and after 48 hours of run time. Calibration consists of a solid block and halftone of each color being printed to the ITB. As the printed areas get to the top of the belt, a sensor will detect them, measure the density, and adjust the printer accordingly. All of the calibration time settings are user controllable. Ta k i n g t e s t p r i n t s , c a r t r i d g e troubleshooting as well as minor printer troubleshooting will be covered at the end of this article. Required Tools

How to Deal with Problems Filling Ink and Ink Compatibility
