Steve Weedon CEO, Discover Imaging Products Ltd. Steve has had a varied career in the imaging industry since 1973. He has held senior management positions with such companies as, Nashua, Kalle Infotec, Katun Corp, and Gestetner, before starting The Recycler Trade Magazine in 1992 and the first European cartridge remanufacturing trade show that same year. In 1994, Steve joined Static Control to head the European operations. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. RechargExpo Thailand 2013 By Recharge Asia Staff Writers

The Recharge Asia team's initial “gut” feeling about branching out into another part of Southeast Asia, and backed up by market information, was that the printing industry in Thailand would be a great market in which our industry players would be able to encounter much opportunity. In keeping with our commitment to bridging the East and West, RechargExpo has naturally evolved into the right platform to connect the various sectors in our industry on both sides of the globe. Its successful launch on August 28-30 is validation of the “gut” feeling that has compelled us. The exploration of this unknown market and the promotion of a new event has been challenging but exciting, especially in uncovering unmatched potential and growth possibilities. The preparation process, however, felt like crossing puddles by stepping on unsettled stone after stone. With each stride, we made the best possible bet and tried to remain steadfast. Our goal was to set up a new stage for our industry players not only to perform on but to also excel at what they do. We exhausted all possible media channels to promote awareness of this new expo together with extraordinary support from our local partners, AXIS Digital and IMPACT Exhibition Management, who offered both their expertise in the local market and their resources. In the end, it all came together and it was truly a great feeling to hit our target spot on.

During the three days of the expo, over 1000 visitors from 23 different countries, all from the printer and copier supplies industry, perused the expo floor. Of these, 36% were local Thai distributors who were looking for a new alternative in their choice of products. After local visitors from Thailand, the next largest group of buyers came from Singapore and Malaysia. The remaining places represented include Africa, Vietnam, Philippines, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Cambodia. The flow of visitors remained constant and gradual throughout the three days and this allowed the exhibitors time to fully engage in quality discussions with their prospects. As we all know, business is not simply the result of negotiations but rather the trust and relationship that is built with care and attention to clients. This is the important foundation required for longterm cooperation. We w e r e p l e a s e d that RechargExpo Thailand was able to orchestrate a constant visitor flow, to successfully initiate and facilitate collaboration among the various players in the printer market, and to provide alternative printer

supplies to this fast-growing market. One of the highlights of the Expo was the gala dinner and dance performance on the evening of August 28th. The dishes were authentic, delicious and plentiful and the performance by gorgeous dancers was something unique and entertaining. Thailand is a great place to conduct business as well as a vibrant and wonderful place to entertain! If you have ever watched the film "Lost in Thailand", the #1 ranked comedy from China, you surely understand the fun parts of this beautiful land. great source of encouragement and confidence, and we greatly appreciate those who have inspired and supported us. Will HP Avoid Succumbing to Declining Trends in the Industry? Prior to Hewlett-Packard’s anticipated announcement of its third quarter revenues on August 21, there has been much speculation as to whether the PC manufacturing juggernaut will post figures lower than those in previous quarters. It has been observed that the PC market has continued to lose steam and follow a weakening trend in the past year, which is one major reason for predicting low Q3 earnings even by a respected brand such as HP. The Q2 report revealed the company’s lowest dip in profits in recent years. Earnings went down 10% to $27.6 billion while net income dove 30% to $1 billion. This decline is attributed in part to unstable economic situations in different parts of the world, affecting sales and profitability. Despite being in the thick of business restructuring using a strategy that involves simplifying business processes and lowering marketing and sales expenditures, HP is still hounded by poor demand and a general slowdown in the PC market. As such, it is expected that these elements will continue to influence the company’s earnings in various divisions during the quarter. Despite this, the company still has some reasons to be optimistic. HP expects to save up to $3.5 billion every year after it has completed the process of reducing personnel by 27,000 by the time 2014 ends. Despite this measure, the question remains as to what other steps the firm has or will take to turn things around and post higher earnings in the remainder of FY 2013. With regards to the services division, from which HP takes 40% of its value, the second quarter of this year has seen declining IT services renewal rates despite stepping up efforts to generate new contracts. Clients have kept themselves from upping IT expenses and so the scenario in this division remains less than rosy. On the other hand, HP’s Cloud system experienced positive results with its growth. With the increased use and practicality of converged infrastructure that can power cloud computing through the combination of security and big data analytics, it is projected that this may be the American company’s new source of income this year and will continue to grow. As to Hewlett-Packard’s second-biggest division, printer and ink cartridge, it also appears to be not doing well and may continue to be on the decline. The IDC has reported the weakening of the market for printers as shown by the plummeting number of shipments over the last three quarters. The printer manufacturer appears to resolve this by concentrating on commercial hardware and the high-end ink market, as shown by its launching of the ink advantage program in Q2 of this year, targeting enterprises. This move improved its revenues in the same quarter and is expected to boost Q3 earnings and slow revenue decline as well. Despite the fact that HP led the pack in global shipments of servers in Q2, registering a 30% share of the market, the IDC reported a 13.6% drop in the number of server units shipped in the same period. It is projected that there will be continued decline due to weak demand across all major shipment destinations, as well as highly competitive pricing and persistent macro pressure. Finally, the company can expect some revenue growth in its PC and workstation division, thanks to the re-launching of its tablets and the introduction of new advanced thin clients at lower rates. This is despite the fact that Q2 shipments for PCs went down 11%, causing HP to give up its top position, which is now occupied by Lenovo. As such, it will be interesting to learn what the company will do next to boost PC earnings and perhaps regain its #1 spot in the PC stakes. Source: RechargeAsia

Two-Year Legal Wrangle with DCI Ends in Epson’s Favor It was in April 2011 that Seiko Epson Corporation filed a lawsuit against Dynamic Cassette International (DCI), accusing the latter of patent infringement on some of the former’s print cartridges. This legal dispute since went on for two years until the High Court finally issued a resolution that finalized the case just recently. Epson, in a short public statement, relayed that DCI has agreed to stop manufacturing cartridges compatible with its own printers. The statement also indicated that both parties have reached an agreement that was to their mutual satisfaction. All other details of the resolution have not been included in the press announcement as they are to be kept confidential. In response to the conclusion of the dispute, Epson Europe’s Vice President, Robert Clark, had this to say:

"We invest heavily in research and development to ensure that our customers receive the best possible imaging results from our products. As a business we are committed to protecting our investments, assets and our resulting products and technologies, the world over." DCI manufactures toner and inkjet cartridges that can be used with printing devices made by most of the big brands, as well as its own Jet Tec line. The current turn of events eliminates a competitor in the cartridge market where suppliers of “own brands” have offered products at prices considerably lower than those sold by printer manufacturers. Chinese University Scientists Develop Groundbreaking Biomaterial 3D Printer Three-dimensional printing machines have been used to reproduce various inanimate items, such as glasses, equipment parts, and even a gun. This time, thanks to the efforts of a team of scientists at Hangzhou Dianzi University in Zhejiang Province in China, 3D printers can now be made to churn out living tissues.

The group of scientists, led by Xu Ming'en, recently announced of their breakthrough in successfully “printing” a human ear, as well as hepatic cells. Inorganic, polymer, and water gel materials were used, including living cells. T h e l i v i n g re p l i c a s we re p r i n t e d i n a laborator y setting using Regenovo, a biomaterial printer that can operate in sterile conditions and produce living body parts that can survive for four months. The printing process is similar to that employed by traditional 3D printing machines, the main difference being the kind of material used. Instead of plastic, the team used biomaterial components, as mentioned. The scientists hope to recreate a liver and a kidney using Regenovo as their next goal. They said it will take about 20 days to finish printing these vital organs. Source: RechargeAsia

Brother Industries: Why We Decided to Invest in the Philippines Japan-based printer maker Brother commended the South East Asian nation as an investment hotspot during the opening of its new production facility in the country. To s h i k a z u K o i k e , representative director and president of Brother Industries, said that the company chose the Philippines as one of their production sites due to the infrastructure, quality of human resources, and tax benefits. "As a result of about a year of careful examination of several countries mainly in Southeast Asia, we selected the Philippines due to its developed infrastructure, abundant labor force, attractive tax benefits, high capability of Filipinos in English communication, and of course, [the] hardworking and cheerful attitude of Filipinos," the director said. Meanwhile, Toshinao Urabe, the Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines, said that the Brother plant is the third Japanese manufacturing facility opening in the country within the span of a month. He also commented on the viability of the country for investments. "The investors are coming thanks to the good governance of President Aquino, the constant policy dialogue which we have with Secretary Domingo under JPEPA, the efforts of PEZA and other implementing agencies, and of course the good reputation of Filipino workers. Manufacturing industries provide job opportunities for less experienced workers and improve their skills. Better income means better opportunities," Urabe stated. A second facility will also be set up in the Philippines, which will then prompt the company to hire around 3,500 locals by 2015. Currently, there are about 400 Filipinos working for Brother Industries (Philippines), Inc. The president of Brother’s Philippine arm, Toshio Ito, said that he expects the projected staff numbers to double in the coming years. The Philippine facilities will be manufacturing printer-related products such as inkjet cartridges and label printer tapes. The main body of various printers will also be produced in the said plants, situated in the First Philippine Industrial Park. Among those present in the inauguration was the Philippine president, Benigno Aquino III. He acknowledged and thanked the Japanese firm for doing business in the country. He also pledged to meet and go beyond investor expectations. "No company would decide to invest P5.59 billion, construct two different facilities, and eventually hire a 3,500-strong workforce on just a whim. For Brother Industries, the Philippines was the strategic choice," President Aquino declared. "Your decision to set up shop here assures us that we are doing the right thing, that the country is on the right track—towards the resurgence of industry, the creation of more jobs, and a future of sustainable, broad-based growth," he also added. Power Asia Pacific reported that earning customer satisfaction not only prevents customer defection but also contributes to higher profits through cross-selling and up-selling. Fuji Xerox is aiming to provide quality solutions and services that meet customers' management challenges including enhancement of their business efficiency and information security, while providing products and customer support worthy of the evaluation. J.D. Power Asia Pacific conducted this year's studies in May, targeting business entities in Japan with 30 or more employees. Major toner plant investment for Xerox Following the approval of New York State and Monroe County incentives, Xerox has chosen Webster for its planned expansion of global toner production capacity. The project means an additional $35 million investment in the emulsion aggregation (EA) toner plant in Webster. ‘As a global manufacturer of toner, we considered options around the world, but tax abatement incentives from the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency and a grant from Empire State Development contributed to making Webster the most cost effective location to build additional manufacturing capacity,’ said Richard Schmachtenberg, senior vice president, Consumables Development and Manufacturing for Xerox. Xerox will construct two additions to its Webster plant, increasing the size from 100,000 square-feet to 155,000 square-feet, and will add about $26 million in EA toner manufacturing equipment. The expansion will start in August with completion expected in February 2015. The additional manufacturing line will create about 25 new jobs over time, consisting of process operators, quality control, lab personnel and additional maintenance staff. The project also would generate about 70 fulltime construction jobs. According to InfoTrends, between 2011 and 2016 production digital colour toner-based pages will grow at a 9 per cent compound annual growth rate, exceeding 300 billion pages globally by 2016, which for Xerox, means greater demand for the chemically grown toner used in Xerox printers and production presses.

Developed by Xerox and protected by more than 300 patents, EA toner produces sharper images using less toner per page. Unlike traditional toner, which is created by physically grinding composite polymeric materials to micron-sized particles, EA toner is chemically grown enabling the size, shape and structure of the particles to be precisely controlled. This leads to improved print quality, less toner usage, less toner waste and less energy required for manufacturing and for printing. Xerox and Fuji Xerox have designed around 50 office and production printing products that use EA toner. The current five-story plant, which opened in 2007, is one of only a handful of its kind in the world. It features more than 25 miles of pipe and stainless steel tanks and includes more than 9,000 sensors that track information about temperature, humidity, air flow and other variables. HP Recommends Remanufacturers Make Further Changes HP’s Matthew Barkley and Elizabeth Porter will jointly advise cartridge remanufacturers from around the world, they need to check that the microchips they use, do not infringe HP’s intellectual property.

The largest manufacturer and distributor of printers in the world will meet with cartridge remanufacturers, to advise them how to avoid infringing its intellectual proper t y—this time with the use of aftermarket microchips. Hewlett Packard’s Elizabeth Porter and Matthew Barkley will speak to 200 delegates—from more than 40 countries—at the annual Conference@2013 at the Holiday Inn in Zhuhai on October 16. “HP has chosen this particular conference, because of its reach to the global aftermarket industry,” Matt Barkley told Recycling Times Media’s David Gibbons. Recycling Times Media has been running the conference—which will focus on “Preparing for Change” this year—every year since 2006. In recent times, the aftermarket industry has been rattled by many legal challenges by—and the issuing of exclusion orders to— original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), such as Canon, Lexmark and HP. While the aftermarket largely respects the intellectual property of the OEMs, Barkley explains due diligence needs to continue, to make sure work-around solutions do not infringe the patents owned by HP. Now, according to HP, the focus of intellectual property rights will focus on the smart chips used in printer cartridges. This will be news to those manufacturing the aftermarket chips, as well as those using them during remanufacture. According to Barkley, HP has recently notified some prominent chip manufacturers that their replacement chips for certain

models of HP toner cartridges provide misleading messages to end users. “HP would like to share these issues with the broader aftermarket community, as well as other considerations that have not yet been shared with any party. The intent would be to ensure all manufacturers have the suitable information to make changes to their products or demand compliant products from their suppliers.” Barkley believes the simulcast translated presentation (Chinese and English) fits well with the Conference agenda, and will bring important news to the global aftermarket industry about the infringement, brand misrepresentation and counterfeiting of HP’s intellectual property. Elizabeth Porter, HP ’s Wor ldwide Toner Competitive Response Manager and Matthew Barkley, HP’s Worldwide IP & Brand Protection Programs Manager, have entitled their joint presentation: “HP LaserJet Chips – Recommended Changes to Avoid Brand Misidentification.” Other OEMs will also make their presence known at the Zhuhai event in October, including keynote speaker Allen Westerfield. Formerly from L exmark, Westerfield now heads up the Imaging Supplies Council which targets the illegal fake and wrongful clone cartridge industries. Westerfield says millions of dollars of fakes are still ending up in the hands of customers thinking they are branded, new cartridges. Vincent Vanderpoel, a former HP Vice President, will be give his OEM perspective on what’s coming up next with printers and consumables. Having spent 25 years with

HP in the imaging and printing business mostly in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia, he will detail the challenges aftermarket players need to overcome to drive sustainable growth. Lexmark’s Andrew Gardener will join Westerfield, VAnderpoel and others on a panel to debate the impact of clones and why they are so dangerous. Wanting to comment on HP’s infringing micro chips news, which will break at this event, will be patent attorneys Dr. Katja Dauster from Europe, Edward O’Connor from the US, and Helen Duan from China, They will also review the impacts from the various legal wranglings in the industry during 2013, and what lies ahead for 2014. Last month Steven Adkins—a trial lawyer specializing in Section 337 investigations before the United States International Trade Commission and at U.S. Customs, and representing Print-Rite in North America—took the unusual step to invite Print-Rite’s customers to meet faceto-face with customs and border officials following the general exclusion order given to Canon by the US International Trade Commission. According to Adkins, Customs gave very clear instructions to those importing Print-Rite’s products: “So long as [you] are bringing in the Print-Rite No-Twist™ gear product, there is no issue.” Apparently Customs also warned other offshore suppliers have no such clearances. Adkins will also join the panel discussions on October 16. Chuck Sharp will spear head the latest frontiers when it comes to inkjet printing and the various opportunities available to

Lexmark Announces Agreement to Acquire Saperion LEXINGTON, Ky., Aug. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) today announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Germany-based Saperion AG, a leading developer and provider of enterprise content management (ECM) and business process management (BPM) software in Europe, for a cash purchase price of approximately $72 million. Upon the closing of the transaction, Saperion will report into Perceptive Software. Ricoh launches Reuse and Refill of Toner Bottles in India Ricoh has opened a recovery and refilling operation for used MFP toner bottles at a facility in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. Reuse of toner bottles contributes to resource conservation which is one of the pillars of Ricoh's environmental management. The new initiative in India enables us not only to reduce the use of new resources, but also to shorten product supply lead time to customers compared to relying on imports. It is also beneficial for reducing environmental impact such as CO2 emissions during transportation as well as optimizing inventory. The driver behind this action is an "On-demand toner filling machine" that was developed with Ricoh's unique technology for space and cost saving. Ricoh started recovery and refilling of MFP toner bottles in Japan in 2001. This approach has been expanded to four locations in Japan, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, and now India. An increase of varieties of toner that can be refilled and expansion of operation point are considered as a next step.

HP Hauls In Over 36,000 Fake Supplies Found in Pakistan

American printer maker Hewlett-Packard recently declared its seizure of 36,480 counterfeit products in a series of raids launched in collaboration with the local authorities in Lahore. Despite the concerted efforts of law enforcement agents, only one was arrested in connection to the find. The individual will later be facing criminal prosecution. Of the huge haul, 190 were fake toner cartridges while only 25 of them were counterfeit ink cartridges. The rest were a variety of components utilized in producing cartridges identical to the original ones that HP makes. This move is said to be HP’s way of underscoring the company’s stance on counterfeiting and its commitment to def end its intellectual property and brand. HP is not above engaging in anticounterfeiting measures to combat fraudulent production, distribution, and sale of fake HP supplies. “Through our anti-counterfeiting efforts, HP is determined to protect our customers and our brand,” d e c l a re d D a v i d L l a m a s , H P ’s Global Brand Protection and AntiCounterfeit Manager for Printing and Personal Systems. “Our commitment to our customers is the driving force behind the vigilance of our anticounterfeit team, as we understand how the sale of counterfeit HP products negatively impacts our customers and the HP brand. With counterfeit HP print cartridges, customers purchase what they often assume to be a genuine HP product, but they instead receive a cartridge

that provides them with inferior print quality at best and often times a cartridge that fails to perform at all,” he concludes. A counterfeit product is defined as one made to appear exactly the same as the original or at least cannot be distinguished from the genuine one, with the main aim of deceiving the consumer. As such, everything about the product, down to the packaging and security seals, are printed to resemble the original. In many cases, the counterfeits are simply refilled cartridges, containing less superior inks. HP’s relentless implementation of its anti-counterfeiting program in Asia Pacific has seen an increase in seizures of counterfeit supplies. In the past 4 years, about 25 million units of fake products have been confiscated. Globally, the American printer manufacturer has done no less than 4,600 investigations in various countries, up to 88 of them. Within a four year period, about 36 million fake products and components have been seized worldwide.

Voluntary Recall of Epson Printers in China

On August 27, Epson (China) Co., Ltd. announced a voluntary recall of 16 printer models (169,452 units) sold in mainland China. In certain rare cases, continuous and extreme power surges far in excess of those expressed in the product specifications may cause fire in the power unit. Customers may use these products as normal in other countries and regions.

Hewlett-Packard Introduces New and Enhanced MPS Program HP, the printer and PC manufacturing giant, has launched the new managed print services (MPS) offering in India, starting with Delhi and Mumbai. The roll out will later be carried out in other metropolitan areas by the end of 2013, as well as the top cities in the next year, 2014. The HP Bundled Page program is being pushed to SMB and enterprise clients through its partners. This new program includes an all-in bundle of maintenance, supplies, and services. Nitin Hiranandani, Director of Printing, HP PPS India, said that SMB’s now are expressing their desire to get involved with MPS “because it allows them to move from a capex to an opex model and provides savings of up to 20 percent.” In explaining the features of the new program, Hiranandani said the following: “Partners can provide supplies, consumables and software-based services while the customer owns the hardware. Or partners can buy hardware through HP Financial Services and offer it to customers on base charges per month on hardware and click charges on actuals.” Aside from this, partners can sell enterprise-grade MPS to clients in two models. Additionally, partners are given access to the HP ExpressDecision Portal, which allows them to create proposals and quotes for cost-per-page pricing, as well as perform tasks relating to account and contract management, device monitoring, and client invoicing and reporting. “We will provide presales and implementation support. Moreover, the HP Services team will support partners in areas where they don’t have a presence,” Hiranandani also said. There already are approximately 15 partners at present. HP seeks to add more to that number, particularly those with a service mindset. The IDC has previously said that in 2010, the APEJ MPS market was valued at $530 million. The organization projected this to grow to $990 million by next year. On the other hand, the Photizo Group has pinpointed India as the APAC’s fastest-growing market for MPS. Furthermore, AMI Partners has assessed that around 18% of the business generated from printing in India comes from MPS. With this estimate, the group thinks that by 2015, close to 60% will shift to MPS.

Remanufacturing the Samsung SCX-6555 Toner Cartridges By Mike Josiah, Technical Director of UniNet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certif ication committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. The Samsung SCX-6555 is a print/ scan/copy/fax engine that runs at 1200 dpi with speeds of up to 55ppm and has a first page out in under 8 seconds. The monthly duty cycle is 250,000 pages per month. These machines come in multiple configurations with different paper trays, duplexing, 80Gb hard drives, multi bin mail boxes and finishers all available. These are not small machines with dimensions of 25”(W ) x 19”(D) x 24”(H) and a base weight of 98lbs. The Samsung toner cartridge SCXD6555A is rated for 25,000 pages, and has a list price of $87.99.00 USD. There is a separate toner and drum cartridge used in these machines. The drum unit part # SCX-R6555A is rated for 80,000 pages and will be covered in separate instructions. Figure A shows a basic diagram of the printing process used in this engine. All very basic so there is no need to go into the actual theory.

114 Issue October 2013 Cartridge troubleshooting On this type cartridge, there is nothing really that can go wrong print wise, but there is one plastic failure point you need to be aware of. After a few cycles, the plastic clip indicated in Figure 17 can wear and not allow the handle to lock in place properly. If this happens you will get a “Cartridge Not installed” message. This can sometimes be fixed by reforming the clip with a plastic welding iron or a low wattage soldering iron, but at best this is a temporary fix. The cartridge should really
