Effective Marketing to the Rapidly Evolving Chinese Market By Curt Keller The recently released report by McKinsey & Company entitled Consuming China: How To Get Ready For The Next Stage provides some enlightening insights into how the very essence of the Chinese economy is changing before our very eyes and points to some very strategic moves which savvy digital print and consumables technology marketers to the world’s largest population can consider now in order to be ready for the future. Urban household spending to quadruple The study estimates that private consumption will have exceeded public investment by 2015. Even though personal income as a share of GDP is still lower than most developed countries, and is even at a rate below that of Russia, the Chinese government has shown a willingness toward establishing policies which will promote the increase in personal wealth. McKinsey sees urban household spending increasing 384% in the next decade, as the trend toward urbanization of the majority of the nation reaches 70%. Interestingly, the report sees much of this growth occurring in the western cities rather than in the traditional metropolises of the central south and east, where much of the urbanization has already occurred and where cities may be reaching their physical limits. The Tier Two cities are going to burgeon At this time, the metropolises with a population of ten million people or more are the most prosperous in China. Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Tianjin outrank the smaller cities in middle class households at 83% as compared to 66%. However, the McKinsey report sees the bulk of the economic growth occurring in the dozens of Tier Two Chinese

cities that currently have a population between 1.5 million and 5 million. Migration from value-conscious to feature-packed With this growth in the Tier Two cities, it was inevitable that companies would begin to focus their expansion plans in these rapidly ever more affluent metro areas. As the inhabitants of these cities continue to catch up to the dwellers of the Chinese megapolises, consumer habits will change drastically as quality and luxury become ever more important to them. The current Tier Two market for digital print and consumables technology will change with the overall prospects as the growing number of companies will require ever rising amounts of equipment, and the type of purchase will migrate from the value-conscious to the feature-packed. Customer service will also take on a far greater importance in Tier Two cities (as well as Tiers Three and Four) as quality at every touchpoint will be required by the mid-sized city inhabitants to an equal degree of that demanded by the Tier One citizens. China’s GDP will add two entire Germanys In 1995 only 13% of all households would be considered “middle income plus,” and in just fifteen years, that percentage has increased to a staggering 71%, with the report seeing the percentage continuing to rise to an almost unbelievable 87%. While this unparalleled and unprecedented wealth growth of a population continues, the top of the income pyramid increases its thirst for material goods. The wealthiest one-quarter of urban households will soon represent half of

China’s total consumption. Not only is the speed absolutely remarkable at which this fundamental reconfiguration of the entire economic basis of a nation of nearly 1.4 billion people has taken place, but the sheer mass of numbers are close to inconceivable. In the next few years, China’s GDP is expected to add the equivalent of two entire Germanys (!!!) to its economic power. Service sector will overtake industry by 9% Of particular interest to digital print and consumables technology marketers are the specific characteristics being demonstrated by the swiftly evolving Chinese economy. Services are expected to overtake industry and lead 53% to 42%, which presents a palpably burgeoning market for these types of products. As countless millions of Chinese citizens continue to rise up into the middle class segment, digital print and consumables technology marketers would be well advised to look at them as the demographic market with the greatest potential for long-term growth. Identifying these individuals and leveraging coherent product branding, design, and marketing strategies to build their loyalty as early as feasible is a process which will pay considerable dividends in the future. The one child policy has created a severe demographic skew The demographic characteristics of China are unique in the world not only due to the nation’s explosive economic expansion but also by the severe skew triggered by the long-standing one child policy. This regulation has been applied since 1979 and it is estimated that it may have prevented the birth of up to 400 million Chinese.

The prospect of a China that would currently stand at nearly 2 billion people is too gargantuan to comprehend, as it could theoretically have led to a Chinese economy of nearly a third larger than it is today. The reality that digital print and consumables technology marketers have to confront is that due to this highly controversial policy, the percentage of Chinese senior citizens is set to nearly double in the next decade, while the share of young people continues to plummet. National aging population leading to labor shortages The inevitable result of this national aging population is already being felt in the labor market which is shrinking on a continuous basis, especially outside of the major metro areas. The China Development Research Center has stated that the rural labor force will continue to decline, and most importantly, the number of rural workers who will be available to move to the metropolises will also decline. So not only will there be fewer people around to perform the rural work, but there will be fewer people that will be in the rural areas and will be moving to the cities, which creates a quandary for the future growth of China as a nation. Reroute marketing campaigns from rural to Tier Twos As rural labor becomes more and more scarce, the costs that laborintensive companies in the hinterland must confront will skyrocket. This will have a dampening effect on business growth in rural areas, creating a situation that should be taken into consideration by digital print and consumables technology marketers. Any marketing campaigns focused on approaches to rural Chinese businesses should be rerouted to the Tier Two cities preferably, as those are the areas that will be seeing the greatest potential for strong growth. The wealthy want foreign status symbols that are “Chineseized” Wealthy Chinese are famous for their preference for foreign brands, but as the entire market becomes more mature, they are increasingly demanding that the products they choose are customized to local tastes and preferences. One of the most outrageous examples of this almost blind appreciation for products that are Chinese-ized is General Motors’ Buick GL8 minivan. Up until a well-overdue revamp in 2011, the vehicle was essentially identical to what was sold in the USA as the Chevy Venture/Uplander. However, while a 2009 model American vehicle sold for US$20,000, the Chinese were charged upwards of US$65,000. As this market began to soften, GM developed an all-new GL8 specifically for the Chinese, and sales continued at a rapid pace. This demonstrates that the wealthy Chinese population is no longer content with foreign status symbols but now require bespoke products that take their specific national requirements into consideration. Digital print and consumables technology marketers need to be attuned to these momentous shifts in the profile of the world’s largest market. China will be a very different nation in just a decade or so, and aiming for this future is a lucrative strategy to adopt today. In the words of the great Wayne Gretzky:

Worldwide Large Format Printer Shipments Show Uneven Signs of Growth and Decline 3% in the Fourth Quarter of 2012 Most regional markets posted quarter-over-quarter growth in the worldwide large format printer (LFP) market during the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q12) while year-over-year sales declined, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Large Format Printer Tracker. Overall shipments in the worldwide LFP market were more than 78,000 units in 4Q12, an increase of roughly 5,000 units from 3Q12 but down 3.5% from the fourth quarter of 2011. Year-over-year shipments slowed at similar rates in both mature and emerging markets, -3.7% and -3.2% respectively. For the full year 2012, the global market was also down by 3.5%. While several regional markets enjoyed increases, many experienced single-digit declines. "While shipments slowed in 2012, in the fourth quarter the trend improved from the prior two quarters," said Phuong Hang, program manager, Worldwide Quarterly Large Format Printer Tracker. "The technical market was stable in 2012, and showed signs of growth in the fourth quarter. The graphics market, however, is still being impacted by the lack of growth in the global economy."

Technology Highlights • Shipments of technical printers fared better than the overall market, growing by just under 1% year over year. Technical remains the larger application segment with 45,300 units shipped, accounting for 58% of the total LFP market in the fourth quarter, down from 56% a year earlier. Mature markets grew by 1.6% in 4Q12. For all of 2012, technical shipments were about flat, declining by less than 1%. • Shipments in graphics applications declined by 8.6% year over year, capturing 42% of the overall market, down from 44% a year ago, on shipments of 32,800 units. Most markets declined in 4Q12 compared to a year ago, but a few markets enjoyed positive year-over-year growth. Vendor Highlights • Despite a year-over-year decline of 7.2% in shipments, HP remains the global market leader with 40.2% market share, down slightly from a year earlier. HP remains the market leader in its traditional area of strength, the technical market, with more than double the share of its next competitor. HP also held the number two position in the graphics market, trailing market leader Epson. • Epson was the number two vendor in the overall LFP market in 4Q12 and continues as the leader of the graphics applications segment, with double the share of the next vendor, HP. Shipments declined slightly year over year, and Epson's share of 21.4% was only 0.3% below a year ago. While technical printers are only a small part of its LFP sales, Epson's technical sales have grown by 160% and its share has nearly tripled in this segment over the past year. • Countering the industry trend, Canon's shipments grew 11.4% year over year in 4Q12, resulting in its share of the total LFP market growing to 17.7% and solidifying its number three position in the market. Canon increased its share in the technical segment, where it holds the second position, while its share was flat in the graphic segment, where it holds the third spot. • Following the top three vendors, there was a sharp drop off

Vietnam Printer and MFP Market Grows by 31%; Growth Momentum Expected to Continue Q412 The printer and multifunction peripheral (MFP) market in Vietnam showed resiliency in Q3 2012, growing by 31% sequentially and 8% compared to the same period last year. The growth was mainly due to two reasons. First, the high growth rate of single function printers and higher demand on low-end models together with rising demand coming from various IT bundling programs. Second, the strong return of various low-end laser models, which were delayed in shipment for some quarters. Increased purchases from the government also helped to push up the bleak market. The local market is expected to ride the growth momentum to reach 26% growth by the end of 4Q 2012 posting 155,000 units.

She adds that Vietnam is a unique market among Southeast Asian countries, as the local market is dominated by laser products rather than inkjets. While the market was heavily boosted by the laser printer, the laser MFP market saw a decline of 1.9% sequentially and 0.44% yearly. This segment has yet to reach the expected growth as the majority of users are still reluctant to choose MFPs with all of their many functions, which require knowledge in usage. Moreover, the reduced prices of the laser printer, copier and scanner, as well as the ease of usage and replacement, provide for a maintained strong presence of separate machines for specific purposes. On the other hand, inkjet products continued to make larger inroads in Vietnam. In the first nine months of 2012, the total inkjet shipments reached 83,000 units, increasing by 72% compared to the same period in 2011. Aside from heightened competition on unit price and printing quality, inkjets are now also heavily focused on better usage cost to compete with laser units. Modern applications like eprint, Wifi-printing functions and CISS have been applied into inkjet MFP/printer, which bring more benefits to users. Promotional activities such as roadshows, exhibitions and marketing events throughout the year also helped to bring inkjet closer to users. Despite the high inflation and social-business issues, total Hard Copy Peripherals (HCP) market is expected to increase by 9.18% annually in 2013. However, this rate is mainly for the growth of laser as it is the most popular choice of businesses and government units. After a high growth year for bundling programs with PCs in 2012, inkjet is forecasted to decrease by 12%, reflecting a more accurate purchase demand in the market.

New Challenge for Aftermarket Lexmark Forces Drum and Powder Separation Technology Lexmark launched its new laser printers in October, 2012. Those printers are very different from the old ones: all consumables are applied Drum and Powder Separation Technology. The separation is thorough so that the toner cartridge is only formed by a toner barrel with chip.

Lexmark stated that the new toner cartridge is named Unison Toner. It can be used independently with the Drum Unit. It has taken five years for Lexmark to develop the technology. It can improve the life of the drum unit greatly. This technology can help Lexmark enhance its competiveness in the MPS market and expand profit margins. By analyzing the market strategy of Lexmark, we can find: first, Lexmark abandons the inkjet business and focuses on laser business; second, Lexmark tries to prevent compatible products by developing a Return Program for Cartridges and Regular Cartridges. We can make these conclusions: 1. Return Program Cartridges: Lexmark sells the cartridge to user with a low price. While user must send the empty cartridge back to Lexmark. 2. Regular Cartridges: Lexmark sells the cartridge with a high price and the empty cartridge is handled freely. However, Lexmark reduces Regular Cartridges in the latest new products. It means that the empties will be reduced by at least 10%-20% in the market. We can also get information from the Lexmark website that there is only one kind of toner cartridge left for Regular Cartridges. Return Program Cartridges and Regular Cartridges are the same for old model printers. Obviously, Lexmark leads its customers to use the Return Program Cartridges proactively. By reducing the empties in the market, Lexmark prevents the development of aftermarket products. Not only on its products policy, Lexmark also strengthens its control by patent lawsuits. In summary, Lexmark focuses on cartridges and improves the products value by MPS advantages combination. And they constantly strengthen and enhance the global sales of cartridge supplies through recycling programs and patents to prevent compatibles development. Regardless of original supplies or compatible supplies, those players that respect intellectual property rights can win the long-term development opportunity. I think the pure remanufactured products and full patented products are the key to win the market. But the patent R&D needs a huge amount of Investment. Only those players (such as Ninestar ) with great strength can play these roles in the printing market.

HP Looks to Discourage Cartridge Refills Hewlett-Packard India is squarely taking on the printer-ink refilling industry with a combination of easily available and cheap cartridges and an awareness campaign, detailing the negative effects of refilling. According to Bharat Kharbanda, Country Category Manager, HP India, the refill industry has a nearly 30 per cent market share in both the ink and toner cartridge markets. Hewlett-Packard does not authorize ‘refills’, which are mainly done by unorganised printer-ink stores, and claims that the practice damages both the cartridge and the printer. The company makes its money mainly off the sale of ink and toner cartridges. “The launch of affordable cartridges, starting at Rs. 499, two years ago has helped combat refilling. We’ve seen our market share rise from 38 to 47 per cent. “Therefore, we plan on continuing with this approach and making all our printers compatible with this cartridge,” Mr. Kharbanda said, while addressing reporters at a conference. “Right now, only roughly half of our printers are compatible with the affordable cartridge, from now on all the printers we introduce will be able to use this. We aim to take back lost sales and win back our market share from the refillers,” he added. The printer-and-computer major is also cracking down heavily on counterfeit cartridges; its Anti-Counterfeit Program (ACF) seized spurious equipment worth over $180,000 in India in the last few months alone.

Memjet a Step towards the Right Direction on MPS By Antonio Sånchez Navarro In a market where most of the players try to compete by setting up barriers, Memjet stands out with an astonishing proposition, which seems to be in contradiction with the protection of its supplies business: it designs its products ready for ink re-fill. We are certainly not used to such a market approach from an OEM. As a matter of fact, Memjet is not just trying to find a place in the overcrowded segment of color by differentiating on speed and quality output. The built-in re-fill easiness reduces the printing costs and sets up the base for a long term competitive cost per page (CPP). The three pillars for Success. CPP is the first of the three pillars that influence the signing of an MPS (managed print service) contract. It is one of the main drivers of a customer’s decision. It is also one of the most relevant arguments of a dealer’s MPS proposition. A competitive CPP is a must for dealers to offer a new technology, and also for customers to accept the replacement of their current printing resources. In an economy where the growth of revenue is very hard to obtain, the cost reduction is sometimes the only argument accepted to decide on a new purchase. The second pillar is the capacity of the printer to be managed from remote: the so called printer MPS compliance. Memjet also claims it has built the SNMP of its products to be MPS compliant. The normalization tests performed by Nubeprint confirm their compliance on the models tested, and rates Memjet printers pretty high at this respect. The third pillar is the specific MPS infrastructure set up by the service provider. No matter how well a printing device is MPS compliant, if the dealer does not have the appropriate technology and procedures in place, the printer will not be managed as expected in terms of service excellence and costs control. The MPS processes and systems in place should ensure an automated and accurate printer management that benefits the end-customer (he will really receive an outsourced service, with no need to call to communicate page counters, nor to request supplies or stock them), and the dealer (streamlined processes reduce both its direct and indirect costs, and

reduces its oversized infrastructure, with a legion of people collecting unnecessary calls, or a billing process that lasts for days or even weeks). When all three pillars are in place, success takes care of itself. The frustration of current MPS players. When a crowd of dealers of all sizes joined MPS 4-6 years ago, their expectations where to grow the business and get rid of the erosion of margin caused by an excess of people offering the same standard products. They realized too late that MPS is not just billing pages, but a full change on the way they do business, with big emphasis of process streamline. Nowadays the dealers offering MPS have acquired an experience (bad experience). The day to day reality is a chaotic and expensive infrastructure where the phone lines burn every day, and where there is a lack of profitability due to uncontrolled costs. Everybody has learned from it, though those that really are financing the lesson are the dealers that invested US$50K to several 100 thousand dollars in overpriced tools, not the OEMs nor the SW vendors that hide the limits of the technology they sell. The confirmation that a printer manufacturer is adapting its products to the requirements of MPS should be interpreted as a relief for the MPS industry. It is a step in the right direction, though not enough to re-boost the MPS offering in matured markets like the US. MPS requires much more attention than just collecting counters or toner level data. The recent trend of distributors or large players to put in place MPS open infrastructures (for more details see article http://nubeprint.com/will-a-bull-market-return-tomanaged-print-services-in-america/) will really make the difference as it shall universalize the ability for dealers of all sizes to access MPS yield management technology. I personally think that the approach of Memjet is interesting, brave and honest. I am convinced that should their product be technologically reliable (and I have no reason to question it), they will obtain a reasonable market penetration.

This is part of a series on easy-to-do color and monochrome cartridges you may be passing up but shouldn’t be. They represent some of the best profit opportunities currently in our industry. These cartridges are all very simple, and with a good majority of them there is nothing to test! Training is minimal and in all cases the time needed to do them is very small. For the purposes of these articles, we will not be going in depth but to be honest there really is no need. Some use chips while some do not. Some have waste chambers and others are purely a supply hopper. All of this will be covered.

近日,IDC 报告显示了 2012 年第四季度全 球打印机市场的出货量,总量为 3110 万台,相 比 2011 年同期下降了 11.2%。 报告显示,打印技术上喷墨打印机仍占据 主导地位,以 64% 的市场份额远超彩色激光设 备的出货量,尽管喷墨设备的出货量同比下降了 14%。而激光打印设备整体出货量为 170 万台, 同比下降了 11%。 出货量厂商排名上,惠普仍以 38.5% 的市场 份额独占鳌头,佳能则以 22.4% 的份额紧随其后。 排名第三的爱普生以 14.4% 的份额保住前三席位, 但其份额同比下降了 3%,排名四五位的则分别 是兄弟和三星。 尽管一直被看好的彩色激光 MFP 遭遇了首次 下滑,但 IDC 却对 2013 年充满了信心,并预测 随着消费者信心的回归,整个市场将会缓慢复苏。 来源:中关村在线

近日,通用耗材在政府采购市场上增添了与原装耗材同台竞技的砝 码。 中央国家机关政府采购中心(以下简称国采中心)出台的《关于 2013 年度中央国家机关办公用品及打印耗材定点采购有关事宜的通知》 (以下简称《通知》)规定,中央国家机关在京单位在采购打印复印用 耗材时应在定点供应商处购买中标的通用耗材,通用耗材不能满足需求 时方可购买原装耗材。 据了解,打印复印用通用耗材即打印复印用再生鼓粉盒已正式纳入 新一期中央国家机关政府集中采购目录 , 属强制集中采购项目。记者通 过查阅 2012-2013 年度中央国家机关办公用品定点通用耗材入围招标项 目中标公告后了解到,天威、格之格、莱盛 3 家耗材品牌入围。 针对定点供应商进行的 2012—2013 年度中央国家机关办公用品(暨 打印耗材)定点采购项目,共选定办公用品定点供应商 31 家(含 8 家 电子商城经销商),打印耗材定点供应商 43 家 ( 含 9 家电子商城经销商), 执行期限至 2013 年 12 月 31 日止。在此期间,定点供应商将按照《中 央国家机关办公用品及打印耗材定点中标合同》的内容为各单位提供所 需办公用品及打印耗材和相关服务。 为方便各单位的采购工作,国采中心还将在中央政府采购网上公布 各定点供应商的产品价格、订货方式、售后服务等信息。各采购人可以 在网上查询具体的产品信息和联系方式,并且从中自主选择供货供应商。 在通用耗材产品的价格方面,《通知》也作出了相应规定,招标确定的 中标价格为上限价格,若采购批量较大,采购人可与供应商进一步协商, 以获得更优惠的采购价格。 链接 打印复印用耗材采购流程 (一)各单位采购办公用品及打印耗材时,应当先在中央政府采购 网办公用品及打印耗材定点采购专栏中选择相应商品,并可与供应商协 商向下调整价格,定点供应商将按照承诺在规定时间内送货上门。 (二)采购单位对所供中标产品验收后,供货商应当出具《中央国 家机关政府采购中心电子验收单》。验收单一式两联,由供货商从网络 上下载打印,第一联由采购单位留存,第二联由供货商留存。在供应商 出具验收单后,采购单位应当对验收单上产品种类、数量与价格进行核验, 在验收单上签字盖章并且向供货商支付货款,由供货商向采购单位开具 发票。 (三)货款由各单位与定点供应商自行结算,各单位应按双方协商 确定的结算方式及时向定点供应商支付货款。 来源:中国政府采购报
