Message from the Publisher

Dear Readers, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” I find this quote, like most of Leo Tolstoy’s writings, to be extremely poignant. In the face of our digital times' "tsunami of information"--big data, mobile, cloud, apps, social networks, etc.—one cannot afford to ignore the surrounding changes. It is imperative that we think of how to adopt these changes by changing ourselves. That is, change the way we think and the way we act. These changes make me think, does printing still matter? If the balance of print and digital was to be scaled, which side will tip it? I recently spoke with an IDC expert who assured me: "printing is still massive". There is a profit to be made in print but it depends on where you aim your business and how do you strategize to compete in the marketplace. And, of course, how open you are to change, both around you and within you. In this issue, there are many good articles we have prepared for you. Some of the highlights include Prosecuting for Profit by Ronelle Ingram on p. 14; Why Are Hard Copy Companies So Litigious by Mike Huster on p. 18; WeChat: The Next Frontier For Asian Online Marketers by Curt Keller on p. 24; and Easy to Remanufacture cartridges that you should be remanufacturing - Part 2 by Mike Josiah on p. 54. Be sure to read these interesting articles. They will get your mind running. Lastly, with spring here it is time to get a fresh start marketing and networking. To help you achieve this, we have lined a series of events throughout the rest of the year where you can explore the exciting, promising and quickly-growing emerging markets of Southeast Asia. Do not miss RechargExpo Thailand, August 28-30 and RechargExpo Indonesia, Nov 7-10. It will be well worth the trip. With spring's freshness and ease, enjoy your reading!

WeChat: The Next Frontier For Asian Online Marketers By Curt Keller Any discussion of online user numbers in China quickly escalates into numbers that are difficult to grasp. Therefore, when considering Tencent’s Weixin (translated as “micro message”), a mobile text and voice messaging service which is more widely known as WeChat, the hundreds of millions of users’ numbers just start to pile up like children’s play blocks. The statistic that 700 million Chinese have a Tencent QQ account, which is the primar y login option for WeChat, literally staggers the imagination: That’s the equivalent of every man, woman, and child in the United States and Canada… times two! WeChat represents a massive opportunity for digital print technology and consumables online marketers in Asia and one that could be termed a game-changer for many. A Swiss Army Knife app with massive marketing impact WeChat is a Swiss Army Knife (that is, multiple tools in one) kind of service that provides a broad range of multimedia communications such as text, one-to-many, and hold-to-talk messaging plus contact information exchange, location sharing as well as photo and video sharing. Through shared streaming content feeds combined with social plug-ins that leverage location tracking technology, WeChat is a social networking facilitator of considerable prowess. WeChat offers Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G clients for the iPhone (not the iPad yet), Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Phone platforms in a variety of languages. Although none of these features can exactly be termed revolutionary or unique, it is the sheer power of Tencent in China

24

that makes WeChat a service that online marketers cannot afford to ignore. The Father of WeChat is heading the USA office The already nearly incomprehensibly huge reach of WeChat is even more amazing when you consider that Tencent is in no way restricting it to China alone. The app has already established a firm footing in India and throughout Southeast Asia and is also in the process of seizing market share in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, South Africa and even the UK, Spain, much of Latin American and the United States. To that end, they have opened an office in the USA that is directly headed by the “Father of WeChat”, Zhang Xiaolong, which speaks volumes as to the seriousness that Tencent is applying toward conquering the important American market. WeChat restricts corporate users to one message per day Digital print technology and consumables online marketers should not ask themselves whether they should focus on Weibo vs. WeChat as they are totally different platforms. While Weibo is the Twitter-ish service that works best for issuing timely, brief content on a frequent basis, WeChat is best used to broadcast more intensive content on a far less frequent time scale. In fact, WeChat actually restricts corporate account users to no more than a single publishing of content per day. This is a highly controversial policy that is obviously designed to keep overactive marketers from barraging their WeChat customers with excessive messages, but it has a drawback for multi-national online marketers. A single global message sent to WeChat

users set to go out at 9 am Beijing time will hit customers in New Delhi at 6:30 am, London at 1 am, and New York at 9 pm. WeChat is not just another Weibo, but a dynamic marketing platform WeChat should never be considered just another platform to copy and paste whatever content you currently have scheduled for Weibo or similar channels. The wisest strategy is to apply the power of WeChat and its multi-hundreds of millions strong user base as a fully interactive “marketing through conversation” platform. WeChat is a thorough example of the “be careful what you wish for” proverb as WeChat users are accustomed to fully interactive oneon-one communication. The dynamics of the service are skewed towards the delivery of e-coupons or vouchers, the broadcast of promotional offers, and the provision of virtual benefits such as VIP cards, however it is ripe for the implementation of innovation; and the next great new concept may yet lie out there which will translate into bases-loaded home runs for digital print technology and consumables online marketers. You might find yourself swamped with 1-on-1 communication demands To start out on your WeChat marketing journey it is imperative to craft a comprehensive welcome message to initiate your new joiners. Given the gargantuan size of the user base, marketers could easily find themselves swamped with demands for individual information and clarification which might not be readily handled through canned, boiler plate auto-response functions. A good strateg y is to kick off the conversation by proactively asking

questions that may allow you to route the majority of responses to a hierarchical set of predetermined answers. By defining responses that are identifiable via specific keywords, marketers may be able to satisfy most customer query requirements. However, you should take careful note that you must be clearly aware that your social media staff could swiftly sink beneath the pounding waves of smothering numbers of direct queries that would have to be individually addressed. Yes, there is one thing worse than not getting enough customer enquiries: It’s getting such volume that you couldn’t handle it if they added forty days to every week.

WeChat continues to evolve its marketing facilities

WeChat’s users will absorb as many QR codes as you can provide

Limited & primitive CMS & analytics functions

Digital print technology and consumables online marketers expecting their customers to actively look for their WeChat account a re s e t t i n g t h e m s e l v e s u p f o r a b i g disappointment. WeChat’s established user base is more than familiar with the scanand-add facility and will enthusiastically absorb as many QR codes as you can throw their way. Meticulous and thorough integration of QR into your online and offline marketing is a prerequisite to achieving the success that WeChat promises, as long as the customer is presented with lucid and valuable motivations to scan. So dig out those discount vouchers and sweepstakes promotions!

www.rechargeasia.com

At this time, WeChat is not a perfect platform, however, it is continuing to evolve quickly. In-app product search functions and a merchant membership card service are in the process of being implemented as well as voice shopping. WeChat will allow users to speak the name of their preferred product and purchases will then be able to be processed directly within the WeChat ecosystem through partners such as Taobao. This voice function will also allow merchants to receive voice messages from their customers that will bring an additional dimension to the marketing paradigm.

WeChat provides a CMS platform to its corporate users, but it is severely limited in the data provided which you can use to track traffic and levels of interaction. The maximum historical data is restricted to just one week, so that renders the WeChat analytics tool useful only for very short-term insight. Many digital print technology and consumables online marketers will need to use a different and more robust analytics package and then work out some seamless way to import on an ongoing basis the mere week’s worth of data which WeChat provides. With all of the massive effort that has gone into WeChat, Tencent has yet to announce any firm hint of a monetization strategy. They have not released any form of

Skype

customized solution or corporate business model to speak of, and in a marked variance from standard social media policy Tencent has not demonstrated any particular urgency in attracting advertisers. Regardless, with over 300 million of the 700 million QQ users in China alone already regularly using WeChat and given the global expectations of expansion in the very near future to conquer markets as diverse as India, Europe, Latin America and the USA, WeChat is a force to be reckoned with… and could represent a considerable pot of gold for digital print technology and consumables online marketers.

International Data Corporation (IDC) has published a new vendor assessment and market analysis profiling and ranking the leading providers in the managed print services market in EMEA ("Europe, Middle East and Africa"). The MarketScape report found that Canon, HP, Lexmark, Ricoh and Xerox are leaders in EMEA in the managed print services market. This IDC study assesses nine hardcopy vendors that are participating in the managed print services (MPS) market in EMEA. Vendor selection included vendors with existing and developing MPS programs. This assessment discusses both quantitative and qualitative characteristics that explain success in this important market. Growth of print services will continue to escalate as companies of all sizes recognize the savings and efficiencies that can be realized under such programs and vendors compete aggressively to expand market reach and gain share. "Ongoing economic uncertainties force businesses to reduce costs and optimize their operations. This creates an opportunity for hardcopy vendors to promote their managed print services to a larger audience of small, medium, and large enterprises," said Arnaud Gagneux, research director, European Imaging, Printing, and Document Solutions. "An increased competitive landscape forces vendors to adapt and differentiate their MPS offerings and to look for alliances and partnerships to ensure that they provide the right service to the right company through the right channel, at the right price." The IDC MarketScape report utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology that produces a definitive assessment of each vendor's current market capabilities and strategies for competing in the future. Additional key findings include: • Continuous growth of print services in EMEA as companies of all sizes recognize the benefits print services can offer. • Customers need consistency of delivery. • Appropriate go-to-market strategy which may be multichannel, direct and indirect. • Customers need security requirements. • Alliances and partnerships are vital to ensure the largest portfolio of solutions catering for all environments. • Moving above and beyond cost savings into document solutions. • SMBs are keen to benefit from MPS. IDC MarketScape: EMEA Managed Print Services 2012 Hardcopy Vendor Analysis (IDC #KD01V — March 2013) is a new vendor assessment and market analysis profiling and ranking the leading providers in the managed print services market in EMEA utilizing the IDC MarketScape model. The vendors covered in this IDC MarketScape analysis include established and emerging vendors; 9 in all. The vendors are HP, Xerox, Ricoh, Lexmark, Canon, Konica Minolta, Oki, Sharp, and Kyocera Document Solutions, with an overview of other vendors, including Brother, Epson, Dell, and Samsung. Will China Outrank the U.S. in the IP Market? Is this the century of China? In a recent report, the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) has announced that the State Intellectual Property Office ("SIPO") in China is the biggest patent office on the globe, based on the number of applications the said firm has received. In 2011, SIPO collected 526,412 applications, while the US office only managed to get 503,582 in the same year. If the western equivalents of the emerging Asian super power do not match this astonishing productivity, China will very soon rise to the top in the global IP markets. This huge growth in the number of Chinese citizens local or abroad and firms filing for patents is a clear sign that the countr y has finally acknowledged the authority and significance of intellectual property rights. This, coupled with their huge population and growing dominance in many industries and fields, puts China on the forefront as a global force to be reckoned. The improving economic climate has encouraged the increase of trademark and patent applications. This move will afford Chinese individuals and corporations the opportunity to show the rest of the world that they indeed can innovate. They may also get to cast off their stereotypical image as imitators and low-cost producers and manufacturers. What helped China make the shift to IP is the fact that hundreds of millions of those in the middle class are patronizing products

28

protected by patents, ranging from handbags to cars. In addition, China’s five-year plan includes investing in intellectual property as it is seen to be a necessary ingredient for the economical success of the country. Because of this, the Chinese government encourages local companies and manufacturers to file for patents, including outward applications. In fact, in 2009, the Ministry of Finance set up a fund that will provide up to 100,000 yuan, or $16,000, to residents for each foreign patent filed. This support is further underlined by the high approval rates of the China’s patent office. Managing Partner of Beijing firm Kangxin Partners, Samson Yu, has this to say about the status quo: “ The investment and emphasis on intellectual proper t y advancement is arguably the most aggressive and insightful the world has ever seen. As the domestic Chinese market continues to grow, there is indeed a realistic possibility that China could eventually surpass the United States as the world’s leader in intellectual property procurement and advancement.” While local applications are at an all-time high, it is not the case on the international scene. The Economist observed that less than 5% Chinese innovators secured international patent protections for their creations. When compared to the 27% of their U.S. counterparts and the 40% of their European contemporaries, it is a very small number indeed.

This disparity has raised questions on the value of the patents filed in China. However, the fact that the Chinese patenting process has been in place for only 26 years (the Western systems are about 300 years old) warrants much room for consideration. Currently, many U.S. companies seek to secure protection against infringement in China. Because of this, Chinese businesses are encouraged to protect their own intellectual property – a move that may increase competition and more infringement cases. Despite this, the active patenting efforts of major China-based players, like ZTE and Huawei, will be likely to be followed by smaller inventors. As a consequence, the innovation standards within the borders of China will be set high and may remain there. This will herald a future where the 1.3 billion-strong nation takes the top rank in the IP market – that is if the West does not step up their efforts to stay on top. The quote below has indicated the trend of our time. “For the past couple of decades, we have been in the midst of what many of us have called the golden age of intellectual property.” - Alan D. Lourie, United States federal judge and patent agent, 2008. “This is the Chinese century.” – William ReesMogg, U.K. journalist and editor, 2005. The original article was published at Forbes. com by Jeffrey Shieh, a senior patent attorney for Inovia, a provider of foreign patent filing services. Source: www.forbes.com

Why Green Marketing Is Not Working Why do you buy “organic”? What’s the real reason you and many other consumers plan on purchasing a hybrid car?

Those who do buy green for the conservation of the environment make up a small 2 percent of the market, which is the case in the U.S. Be it eco-friendly cleaner, clothing, vehicle, carpet, coffee, or mobile phone, none of these practical products has ever moved more than 2% of the market to buy green alternatives. The fact that green shopping has remained a niche activity shows that green marketing has been largely ineffective. However, this failure is not due to a lack of effort. In fact, many organizations and sectors of society have joined in the campaign to make more shoppers make eco-friendly purchases for many years now. Even market researchers and survey specialists have supported this movement by saying that a huge slice of the consumer pool want to buy green as much as possible. In reality, only a few of these people do. And not often either.

well as energy-efficient options. However, their efforts are seen to be wholly unexciting and half-hearted, thus the lack of customer interest. Also, the products themselves have been regarded as expensive, ineffective, hassling, and unavailable. With regards to pricing, the addition of “sustainability tax” bloats the cost to levels that turn off many budget-conscious customers. Freya Williams of Ogilvy mentioned this in her GreenBiz.com piece, saying that green merchandise should not be less costly than its conventional counterparts. On top of that, marketers use guilt-inducing angles in their strategies, coaxing people to do their part and save the Earth. This hardly encourages target audiences to make a positive response with their wallets. The revenues and research results have made it clear that consumers don’t want to shift to green shopping for the sake of Mother Earth. Many of the choices they make are done for their own personal benefit and not for the future or the earth, sea, and sky. After all these years, consumer activity hasn’t made a significant effect on many of the environmental issues we face today. They remain pretty much the same challenges, if not worse. Make no mistake, all the above mentioned applies to the consumer-focused market, not the business-to-business segment – which is a different story. Many corporations now opt for ecofriendly supplies and services as they are more eager to modify their buying practices. The continued development of fleet vehicles that run on alternative fuel, green offices, and biodegradable packaging are proof of this.

The Suspects

An Ironic Twist

One of the major culprits for the failure of green marketing is the companies selling the ecological products themselves. They want to capture the said “growing” number of environment-conscious consumers by offering biodegradable or reusable merchandise, as

Curiously, there now is a new crop of companies which developed innovative ways of using and producing their goods. They encourage reusing and sharing services and products, which is a green strategy in itself. Ironically, this is not marketed as such. These companies just present their offerings as a better and efficient alternative to the usual. Also, many large companies such as JPMorganChase, Dell, Intel, Dell, Microsoft, Ford, and Fedex have done improvements in their operations to increase productivity, reduce waste, and shave off costs – goals that encourage ecofriendly practices. But, you never hear these corporate giants speak about green efforts in their ads because they are primarily done for business purposes. Although they aren’t “green” companies yet, they are making a larger and more positive impact than we know. Which is just one more reason why green marketing is no longer an effective tool. Instead of launching and audacious green marketing campaign, corporations should opt to be more accountable on the impact they leave on the environment. Transparency helps companies earn and build trust, making them appear more legitimate and sincere in their efforts to conserve the planet’s resources. Source: www.linkedin.com

When you stop and think about it, the major motivations behind these decisions are really not connected to the desire to save the planet. It’s more likely because you want to live a healthier lifestyle and cut fuel expenses. True or false? The truth is that consumers are unwilling to part with their money for an eco-friendly product or service with the purpose of doing Mother Nature a good turn. Believe it or not, they have been that way for over 20 years now. The Results

Does Print Still Matter? By Kathryn Shepherd Kathryn Shepherd is a writer for chrisalexcorp and discounts.ca. Today the world is net savvy. Almost every third person has a computer and every single person has a mobile phone. With a click of a button, you can send an email or sms. You can chat on the phone or have face-to-face video conferencing even across the oceans. The thought of a paperless office is very interesting, but even today this is next to impossible. Why is it so that even in this net-dominated world, printing is still happening on a large scale? The reasons are clear. For one, it is permanent. No one can say that he/she has never lost any data. The reason is either your hardware is up or a virus has damaged your software, but when it happens, 100's of files are lost in a click of a finger, whereas printed matter once kept safe, can be kept for years and years. You can never know when a virus will attack your PC, and take away your precious information. With a PC or email, if you forget your password you cannot access your

www.rechargeasia.com

files, but with printed matter even if you lose the keys to the drawer or cupboard, you can break the lock and take the file or paperwork you need. Only a natural disaster can make you lose your printed matter. Also, printed matter is priced. Tablets and laptops have made the PC come into our hands, but using them is not a piece of cake for all. The scent of an old book will not come from an e-book. Reading a yellow page (page turns yellow over time) is very interesting because you can't believe you actually are reading something that old. In a survey done on e-book readers vs. print readers, it was found that print readers were able to remember more on what they read as compared to e-book readers, because the e-book readers had to click pages and wait for it to open, which disturbed their focus. Print material today still has a large requirement range. Also, you wait for the

newspaper to know what is happening even though there are 24x7 news channels. The power of printing is still evident today. If the balance of print and digital was to be scaled, print will be heavier. Net is the present demand, but as of yet, it cannot make printing a pre-historical item. In this way, printing still matters thus far. From the house to the business, printing is still the demand of the world. Even today, big deals are signed on paper, not clicked on tablets.

PowerVip Reveals Year 2013 Trends in the Remanufacturing Industry PowerVip develops a report on the remanufacturing industry trends for 2013 based on economic variables, supplier performance, customer demand, and industry observations. PowerVip released a report on the trends in the remanufacturing industry in the year 2013. The company based their forecast on a variety of sources, with some aspects based on prevailing economic variables and others on the dynamics of current suppliercustomer relationships. PowerVip reports that the year 2013 will be characterized by the following events: 1. The emergence of new technologies, especially those involving smartphones and tablets, may cause an approximately 2% drop in the annual revenues of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) (1). This decrease will have a proportional and direct influence on the remanufacturing industry. 2. The economic crisis, with the increased unemployment rates and lessened general activity, will speed up the reduction of demand. 3. The decline in remanufactured cartridge supply quantities is unavoidable, whether or not an economic crisis occurs. Although the industry has been growing geometrically since the 2000s, it is expected that this growth will hit saturation point in the next decade as it is part of the natural process. It is believed that 2-5% of the remanufacturing industry enterprises will disappear (1).

4. OEMs will carry out legal activities during the business downturn as crisis periods trigger the need for them to cushion their falls and losses. In better times, these companies will be more focused on selling and acquiring more market shares. 5. Many recyclers, driven by the need to gain better profits or survive in the market, will begin to import cloned cartridges, violating Intellectual Property policies and causing even more industry distortion. This is despite increased legal pressure coming from OEMs. 6 . T h e E u r o p e a n To n e r a n d I n k j e t Remanufacturers Association (ETIRA) has developed a Guide to Clones report showing manufacturing and selling risks (2). 7. There will still be a number of cartridge quality problems, although these will be of a lesser degree compared to those in the past decade. 8. Although the price war has intensified due to the abovementioned facts, prevailing prices may often still not be in the lower ranges. 9. The circumstances previously mentioned may discourage investments into the remanufacturing industry. However, it is wise to wait for enterprise merging processes

to be accomplished before doing so. 10. Financial issues also need to be taken into consideration. This is especially that the drop in business transactions may restrict bank loan payments by companies who have taken out loans, increasing insolvency risks. ABSTRACT PowerVip understands that four parallel processes are in effect: • Mergers in the industry alter geometric growth. • Cloned cartridges sold at very low rates will never disappear from the market despite the efforts of original manufacturers to stop their production and distribution. • The intense period of recession is brought about by the general economic crisis. • Emergence of new technologies can reduce OEM product consumption and revenues. Once they get past difficult transitions, remanufacturing industry suppliers who are still in business will emerge stronger. Also, the industry will mature and may even do so at a greater speed. Hail to Big Data: What IBM Chief Rometty Says about the New ‘Natural Resource’ The first woman CEO of International Business Machines Corporation educates company executives on the whys and the hows of basing decisions on solid data IBM 首位女性 CEO 教导公司高管为什么、如何依据可靠的数据做出决策。 Victoria “Ginni” Rometty, CEO of industry giant International Business Machines, recently spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations 2013 Corporate Conference in New York about the emerging need to base crucial, “billion-dollar decisions” on solid data rather than blanket assumptions and “gut instincts.” The head of the century-old company, which has weathered many challenges in the technological arena and remains an industry leader, explained that “predictive analysis” of big data is essential because the economy is becoming dependent on information. The future, she predicted, will be marked by decisions based on data taken from social media networks, like mobile information, cloud, and big data. To be able to ride on this “tsunami of information,” as she so calls it, companies need to make use of the information available to them and not just reach conclusions based on experience and subjective analysis. She emphasized the need to let go of old management practices and adopt new ways of organizing, acting, and thinking. Rometty, who is on her 14th month as IBM chief, further elaborated that this modern age of computing will focus on how well corporations understand huge amounts of data collected from social networks. She then goes on to tell fellow CEOs in attendance that “big data is the new natural resource.” And social networks, “the new production line,” will be the major source of this kind of information. “With this emergence of big data and social mobility, you will see the death of the ‘average’,” Rometty declared. She continued to explain that huge amounts of data will change the way organizations understand customer behavior, as well as how “value” is developed and shared amongst people using various social platforms. This increased and rapid data sharing and social interaction will move companies to meet the needs of consumers

34

in order to fully serve them. They will now have to find ways to “personalize” their merchandise and services. Rometty calls this “the era of you.” “If you have a call center, it is no longer about a script, it is about a dialogue. If you have a promotion, it is about collecting information,” she declared. Further along her speech, Rometty said that this individualcentered direction will lead to the development of computers that can “learn by themselves.” This is necessary because data nowadays is becoming more massive. Computers operating on old programs cannot handle the exchange of huge volumes of information. Rometty then mentioned an example of such a technological innovation: Watson. This computer is famous for its successful participation in the quiz show Jeopardy. The supercomputer, which operates on a program that is constantly learning, has already been pulled out from the show and has been reprogrammed for the healthcare industry, as well as for call centers. In its new role, Watson speeds up information gathering processes and recommends various treatment options to help oncologists make the right diagnoses and prescribe the most suitable interventions. In the call center setting, the sophisticated program makes it easy for operators to recall the records they need. This, in turn, enhances productivity. To set company executives on the right path and keep them from being distracted by the tech talk, Rometty shared this nugget of corporate wisdom: “The challenge is not the technology. The challenge, as always, is culture — changing our entrenched ways of thinking, acting and organizing.”

MSE Releases Intelligently Re-Engineered Replacement Cartridges for HP CP5225 Color Printers MSE, a global leader in patented technologies for the production of high quality aftermarket toner cartridges, announces the release of Intelligently Re-Engineered Replacement cartridges for the CP5225 (CE740ACE743A) color printer series. Introduced in January of 2010, the A3/tabloid-sized HP CP5225 (CE740A-CE743A) color printer replaced the 10-year-old HP 5500. Many considered the HP 5500 (C9740A; C9731A; C9732A; and C9733A) to be the most challenging cartridge in market history due to the issues associated with this cartridge. These issues included streaking, backgrounding, leaking, and fuser wrapping with full bleed prints. However, MSE’s ACT suite of technologies, highlighted by the revolutionary Secondary Cleaning System (SCS), addressed all of these issues. The result is a superior-quality aftermarket 5500. Since SCS is scalable to A3, the results are the same consistently high-quality remanufactured color cartridges. Said Yoel Wazana, president of MSE, “The SCS is not just helpful in these new applications, we look at it as necessary. We have even seen toner additives build up in OEM benchmarking that improves after installing our SCS. In addition to the elimination of toner additive build up (TAB) defects, we have addressed fuser wrapping problems with custom, co-developed raw materials that allow for borderless printing, which is common in A3 applications.” MSE Intelligently Re-Engineered replacement cartridges for HP CP5225 Color Printer (CE740A-CE743A) are available in new brand or generic packaging. MSE was recently rated number one in color quality and dealer confidence in an independent survey conducted by the Cameron Consulting Group. Ninestar Releases Solution for Remanufactured Cartridges As the development of the remanufacturing industry in the aftermarket progresses, OEMs are getting more and more aggressive against third-party supply manufacturers and resellers, especially in the United States. Here is such a case. In May, Lexmark claimed that its patents were infringed upon by other players in the remanufacturing industry because they used empty cartridge cores sold outside the United States. Although 35 companies have conceded to a settlement agreement with Lexmark, a recent report revealed that Lexmark requested an extension in order to identify more infringers. For most of the players in the aftermarket, they believe that using remanufactured cartridges will keep them from being accused of patent infringement. However, this belief proves to be wrong. This is emphasized by the fact that there now are more lawsuits filed by OEMs against third-party remanufacturers, showing that the latter will be facing more legal challenges in the future. Ninestar, one of the leading remanufacturers of today, has developed its own solutions for countering the legal issues surrounding

the use of remanufactured cartridges. The company implemented strict measures to control the sourcing of empties, verifying them carefully through their advanced SAP system. Remanufactured and compatible cartridges are then sent off and manufactured in different workshops to avoid false labeling, with the remanufactured products sold only to the original market. The system Ninestar uses enables the company to effectively trace every single remanufacturing process, from empty cartridge collection to sales. Aside from this, Ninestar has taken over local remanufacturing companies to guarantee the source of empties collecting. The excellent sales performance of the company is proof that Ninestar’s solution can reliably protect its customers from patent lawsuits. Companies that have proprietary patents and are able to respect the intellectual property policies of OEMs are the only ones that can genuinely protect their customers and conquer the market. Ninestar, recognizing this fact, aims to continually improve its solutions and launch more reliable remanufactured products and services.

Ricoh Unveils MFPs and Printers Engineered for Healthcare NEW ORLEANS, LA - March 4, 2013 – Ricoh U.S. Healthcare unveiled at the HIMSS 2013 Annual Conference and Exhibition a suite of versatile multifunction products (MFPs) and printers engineered specifically to help healthcare organizations improve outcomes in the face of rising costs, new legislation, security risks, and provider consolidation. Created after extensive research into unmet customer needs, the Ricoh Multifunctional Products and Printers for Healthcare – specifically SP 5210DNHW/SP 5210DNHT, SP C431DNHW/SP C431DNHT, SP 5200SHW/SP 5200SHT, and SP 5210SFHW/ SP 5210SFHT – offer a range of features to streamline the input, processing, and output of healthcare information. For example, healthcare organizations can now print patient wristbands from electronic medical records without the need for expensive single-purpose thermal printers or extensive configuration. Ricoh's new Multifunctional Products and Printers for Healthcare provide a simple yet powerful turnkey solution for wristbands, which today carry an increasing wealth of clinical information, including barcodes, color-coded alerts, patient photos, and more. The new Ricoh MFPs and printers further reduce the cost of wristband production by deftly handling media as narrow as 3.25 inches, reducing consumption of expensive wristband stock. Ricoh offers wristband printing demonstrations at its HIMSS booth #1361. Other New Features Ricoh's Tray Locks Solution makes it easy to secure sensitive and expensive forms, such as prescription paper. To reduce device management costs, SD cards may be used as Portable Print Configuration Modules to easily and efficiently swap mission-critical devices or replicate system settings across fleets. New Teflon-coated paper trays easily accommodate specialty papers and minimize misfeeds for efficient, uninterrupted print runs. The new devices also help organizations address their HIPAA compliance and privacy requirements through the following features: • Locked Print Technology – Holds documents until an authorized user provides authority credentials, such as a password. • Hard Drive Encryption – Encrypts address books, passwords, and certain data stored on the device. • DataOverwriteSecurity System (DOSS) – Protects valuable information by overwriting digital images on the hard drive.

48

To optimize information flow, Ricoh healthcare MFP users can scan records directly to secure email addresses, folders, FTP sites, document servers, and archives. "This new line of Ricoh devices exemplifies the printer/MFP's growing service role across the entire continuum of care," said Michael Campana, Senior Manager of Healthcare Marketing in Ricoh Americas Corporation. "It satisfies the broad-based need for new, innovative business information solutions that directly address the unique challenges of healthcare information systems' output in the most cost-effective manner," he concluded. Specifications The new devices print in the 32-52 ppm range with resolutions reaching 1200 x 1200 dpi. Each MFP or printer comes standard with a Java VM card that enables customers to easily add on Ricoh and third-party applications to gain powerful new capabilities. The MSRP for each device is as follows: SP 5210DNHW/SP 5210DNHT at $2,399/$2,199, SP C431DNHW/SP C431DNHT at $2,399/$2,199, SP 5200SHW/SP 5200SHT at $3,699/$3,499, and SP 5210SFHW/SP 5210SFHT at $4,719/$4,519. WIDE FORMAT PRINTING

Ricoh MP CW2200SP Brings Color to Wide Format Workflows In March, Ricoh Americas Corporation announced the first full-color digital imaging system in its wide format multifunction product (MFP) portfolio. With copying, scanning and printing capabilities, the Ricoh MP CW2200SP streamlines low-volume, wide format workflows while offering impressive features that make this a standout device suitable for architectural, construction and engineering firms operating in CAD-centric environments. Businesses with wide format demands traditionally rely on individual devices to print in black and white or color. The Ricoh MP CW2200SP solves the need for two wide format devices by bringing affordable, costeffective color and black and white output into one footprint. By combining support from large 500 ft. plain paper rolls and printing onto 20 lb. bond paper, workflows are improved and costs per print are lower than traditional color inkjet products. With optional two-roll printing the system can change rolls automatically, helping to maximize printing productivity. "Architects, engineers and construction contractors need their technical drawings and plans to be presented in print exactly how they were designed," said Tim Vellek, Vice President, Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh Americas Corporation. "The Ricoh MP CW2200SP is an outstanding wide format MFP for firms in need of high-quality color output, and it is ideal for those who also place an emphasis on saving space and reducing printing costs." More ways to capture and share The Ricoh MP CW2200SP enables quick and easy sharing of highquality color and black-and-white documents. Scan full-color originals and distribute them via Scan-to-Email/Folder/FTP/HDD or use the embedded Software Developer Kit (SDK) architecture to integrate GlobalScan NX for optimal electronic file management. Documents can be immediately accessed in the field via any Web browser with Scan-to-URL. Built-in USB and SD card slots offer mobile workers the convenience to save documents and generate prints directly at the device for on-the-go productivity. Build a lasting impression The Ricoh MP CW2200SP is the only wide format device available that uses GELJET™ ink technology. First introduced on Ricoh's GELJET line of printers, this fast-drying, waterproof gel ink doesn't soak the page like traditional inkjet devices. Rather, its colorfast properties allow the ink to dry on contact, minimizing bleed to produce more durable documents that are required to stand the test of time, such as blueprints, schematics and design plans. Peace of mind for every task A host of advanced security features are available on the Ricoh MP CW2200SP to protect confidential and proprietary documents from getting into the wrong hands. User authentication restricts access to print jobs from unauthorized users with password or ID card verification. PDF encryption maintains the integrity of scanned PDFs during distribution with password protection and the DataOverwriteSecurity System (DOSS) automatically destroys latent images and data on the HDD. INX Digital Refines JVS Color Compatible Inks Addressing a need for alternative inks in the wide-format industry, INX Digital International has reformatted its flagship Triangle brand JVS color compatible inks. Addressing a need for alternative inks in the wide-format industry, INX Digital International has reformatted its flagship Triangle brand JVS color compatible inks. Print operators no longer need to reprofile their printers when using these inks, which are both color and chemically compatible with OEM inks. Now available in the marketplace, they provide a cost-effective solution without sacrificing quality. “We are very excited about the new JVS inks and so were the franchisees who attended the FASTSIGNS convention a few weeks ago,” said Ken Kisner, INX Digital’s Vice President of Business Development and CTO for digital division ink technologies. “When these inks were originally introduced, they were designed to help Mimaki users who were experiencing color issues with red and yellow. We had developed JVS with a concentration on very bold reds and clean yellows, and sold them in bulk containers. In talking with our customers, we later realized there was an opportunity in the U.S. market to support printers who don’t have the capacity to handle bulk ink and reprofiling and want to keep their process as simple as possible.” With a newly formulated color compatible magenta and yellow, printers now have a pair of 440ml cartridges to choose from. They can select the regular CMYK, which uses the original magenta and requires profiling, or opt for the new color compatible magenta and yellow that simply requires an operator to insert the Triangle cartridge and print. Fast drying with excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, these high quality JVS color compatible inks provide superior performance for vehicle wraps and other wide format work. Bryan Vielhauer, President of Decal Impressions in Cincinnati, was one of the first to use the new formulation and is impressed with the results. “Since converting to JVS, we couldn’t be happier. The transition was seamless and the performance and high color quality is just as good if not better than the OEM inks, and they are far more economical,” Vielhauer said. “My production manager had some initial concerns, mostly due to us running our Mimaki JV3 printer every day of the week. But we have confidence in Triangle brand products and this ink is meeting our expectations.” JVS color compatible inks are backed by the INX Digital worldwide outdoor durability and ink train warranty offered on all Triangle brand ink products. It will be featured at other tradeshow events this year.

Easy to Remanufacture Cartridges that You Should be Remanufacturing (Part 2) By Mike Josiah, Technical Director of UniNet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certif ication committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. This is part of a series on easy-to-do color and monochrome cartridges you may be passing up but shouldn’t be. They represent some of the best profit opportunities currently in our industry. These cartridges are all very simple, and with a good majority of them there is nothing to test! Training is minimal and in all cases the time needed to do them is very small. For the purposes of these articles, we will not be going in depth but to be honest there really is no need. Some use chips while some do not. Some have waste chambers and others are purely a supply hopper. All of this will be covered.

PowerVip Reveals Year 2013 Trends in the Remanufacturing Industry

www.rechargeasia.com
