Exceptional organizations have a special ability for spotting and identifying opportunities that they can take advantage of, and these organizations tend to be open-minded. These openminded organizations are able to convert a disadvantage into an advantage. I hope your organization can do the same. Apps Are Changing Business Models

China RFID Leverages Internet of Things

There are 1.3 million apps available for download on Android smartphones alone, and these are by no means the only apps out there. In fact, apps are turning from an accessory into a necessity, writes Loni Stark, senior director of Adobe’s strategy and product marketing unit.

Wireless networking is rapidly pervading society, not least in China, where allied topic RFID is lifting off very rapidly. It follows the world's largest RFID order, that for National ID cards in China, as well as other big orders such as library tagging in three cities dwarfing all other library tagging in the world. The unique new IDTechEx report RFID in China 2015-2025 reveals that the Chinese RFID market will jump to around $4.3 billion in 2025, powered by sales into the transportation/automotive and financial/security/safety sectors. All that is predominately at 13.56 MHz "HF" in both numbers and market value, in contrast the UHF being very important for RFID in the Americas.

Although the vast majority of apps are downloaded but not used, they are definitely making using various products easier and more pleasant. They are changing user experiences and are turning into something consumers look for when deciding which product to buy. According to Stark, using apps only as a way of pushing online sales is just tapping their considerable potential, a mistake that needs to be fixed. Apps, Stark suggests, are likely to become the major difference between products. She uses Apple’s smart watch as an example: unlike current smart watches, which are mainly used for fitness tracking because they don’t have that many apps, the Apple watch is likely to soon account for the majority of wearable tech sales because it comes with as many as 14 apps through which the wearer can control anything from their emails to their TV. This is what the Internet of Things is all about. People, says Stark, want one of two things from a mobile app: either to be able to use a product they already have in new, innovative ways, or to be able to do something completely new, something they weren’t able to do before at all. Apps simplify complex products. Any company that successfully provides these two to its customers will be a success.

IoT To Create $4 Trn in Economic Value A new report by McKinsey forecasts that the Internet of Things will create economic value to the tune of at least $3.9 trillion over the next decade. The upper end of the scale totals $11.1 trillion, but this would only happen if a number of problems are resolved. One such problem is interoperability. It could come to account for 40% of the overall economic value the IoT creates if it comes to be. Interoperability refers to the ability of different connected devices from different providers to communicate among themselves and share data. A single unified standard for interoperability is needed for it to create this value but so far it has not been created. Another issue is data collection and processing, says McKinsey, something that is not being done today. The data generated and exchanged by Internet of Things devices can have a huge impact in terms of economic value, but it is not being fully exploited. If this changes, then the chances for this huge economic impact will be improved.

Leading analyst on the project, Dr Xiaoxi He, a Chinese national, says, "HF technology was developed much earlier in China compared to UHF technology, and now the Chinese companies have mastered the core technologies in HF chip design. HF RFID covers a wide range of government-led projects including National Identification cards, transit cards, new bank cards with higher security requirements, passports and subway and bus tickets. UHF tags can be read at a longer distance and the cost is lower than with HF tags. The shipment of UHF tags exceeded that of HF tags for the first time in 2012. The annual shipment of UHF tags in China is very similar to that of HF tags. However, for the real applications in China, HF tags take 80% of the total value while the others (including UHF, LF and microwave) take the other 20%. That is because a large amount of UHF tags manufactured by market-oriented companies are for export. There are about 300 million UHF tags/cards used annually in China, including 50 million tags/cards for the smart meter project of the national electricity grid application and 20 million for clothing projects of the People's Liberation Army". All this makes China more like Europe in RFID, though with faster growth, not least in active RFID, where the tag has an on-board power source such as a battery to increase functionality. Allied to this is NFC with mobile phones interrogating tags at HF. Much work in both China and Europe now forms part of the vision for the Internet of Things beyond the narrow vision of IP addressed microprocessor nodes with many sensors and transceiver. For example, Golden Spring Internet of Things in China is a leader in RFID equipment and Shenzhen Marktrace is shifting focus from passive RFID to higher margin active RFID. In the "12-5 Plan for Development of the Internet of Things", the Chinese government has addressed the importance of having its own core chip technologies in UHF and MWF. A special fund for IoT development is being deployed to three Chinese UHF chip companies in 2015.

Attorneys Help Brother Defeat National Class Action Lawsuit Partners Layne Melzer and Karen Scott, with Rutan & Tucker, LLP, California’s largest full-service law firm based in Orange County, California, recently achieved a major victory for their client, Brother International Corporation (“BIC”), the distributor of Brother-brand products in the U.S.A. The Federal district court in New Jersey granted a summary judgment in favor of BIC and against all four named plaintiffs and would-be class representatives [Dicuio v. Brother Int’l Corp., 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 68029 (D.N.J. May 27, 2015)]. This class action lawsuit was filed in 2011 by plaintiffs alleging that all purchasers of certain models of Brother-brand color laser printers were “damaged” by a variety of “inadequately disclosed” design features which, according to plaintiffs, caused the printers to use color toner at a higher rate than consumers might expect and require toner replacement before each cartridge delivered its advertised yield.

According to Gartner's Printer, Copier and MFP Quarterly Statistics Database, at the end of the fourth quarter of 2014, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, ranked in the #1 position in both the office copier (A3) category with 28.6 percent of the 2014 U.S. market, and #1 in the total monochrome copier category with 19.9 percent share in the U.S. In addition, the fourth quarter end of year results showed the Company was ranked first in the Monochrome Printer Segment 6 (91+ pages-per-minute [ppm]) and also moved up two positions with 27.9 percent of the Color Printer Segment 5 (70-90 pages-per-minute [ppm]) in the U.S. market for 2014. “Canon is proud to be ranked by Gartner as a market share leader in several copier and printer categories for 2014,” said Junichi Yoshitake, senior vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We feel the Company’s market share leadership position is a testament to Canon’s commitment to developing innovative products positioned to serve the needs of the customers in the office and production markets.” Gartner’s research included analysis of the market share for color and black-andwhite copiers/MFPs with both laser page and page output technology.

The plaintiffs tried to substantiate their claims by reviewing thousands of documents produced by BIC, deposing BIC’s key officers and retaining experts. The plaintiffs moved to certify a national class suing BIC under New Jersey’s consumer protection, the state where BIC is headquartered. BIC opposed the motion for class certification and also moved for a summary judgment based on evidence from the plaintiffs’ deposition testimony and data captured by the plaintiffs’ printers. That evidence showed that the plaintiffs’ color toner cartridges had performed as advertised. Brother-brand toner cartridges are advertised as capable of printing a particular number of pages at 5% average toner coverage. This advertising, in turn, is based on testing performed under an industry-standard protocol published by the International Standards Organization. The District Court agreed that even after years of discovery, plaintiffs had no evidence that Brother-brand printers do not work as advertised. Specifically, there was no evidence that the plaintiffs’ color toner cartridges failed to deliver their advertised page yield. In testing conducted by experts, the Brother-brand color toner cartridges met or exceeded their advertised page yield. The District Court declined to decide the motion for class certification, having already determined that all four proposed class representatives lacked any injury and, consequently, lacked standing to sue. The plaintiffs presented a variety of theories for measuring their alleged damages, all of which were rejected by the District Court. At one point, the plaintiffs claimed that all buyers failed to realize as much as 75% of the promised yield for their color toner cartridges, a claim that equates to about $200 million in damages. This most recent victory is just one of a series of victories that Rutan has secured for BIC. In 2010, this same New Jersey District Court judge dismissed another class action lawsuit against BIC, rejecting allegations that consumers who receive the advertised page yield are “damaged” if some toner remains in a cartridge upon replacement [Arcand v. Brother Int’l Corp., 2010 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 103942 (D.N.J. Sept. 29, 2010)]. Also in 2010, a California District Court refused to certify a class alleging that BIC failed to adequately disclose certain printer design features that could affect toner consumption [Kandel v. Brother Int’l Corp., 264 F.R.D. 630 (C.D. Cal. 2010)]. That same California District Court had ruled earlier that would-be class action plaintiffs and their lawyers were liable to pay BIC $100,000 in attorneys’ fees based on litigation tactics, a result upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals [Richardson v. Brother Int’l Corp., 400 Fed. Appx. 284 (9th Cir. 2010)].

2,000 Fort Collins HP Workers Await Impact of Split HP is moving forward with its plan to slip the company into two: a new entity that will sell commercial technology and a spinoff that will sell personal computers and printers. Fort Collins has significant R&D and personal computer and printer services. The new enterprise had $25.6 billion in sales for the last two quarters, with net earnings of $852 million. According to industry analysts, 400-500 people work in Fort Collins' workstation group and fewer than 120 on the printer side. Both groups would become part of HP. Inc., and 1400 workers in Fort Collins would become a part of the HP enterprise working on the network cloud and infrastructure design, enterprise systems, storage and VLSI design.

Sprout: the New All-In-One HP’s Sprout has got a lot of publicity and it seems to be well-deserved. Tech Times tested the machine and says they managed to make a new logo for a fashion designer, shoot a slow-motion film about plastic butterflies, and learn origami within a few minutes. The innovative feature of Sprout is that it allows the user to interact with the content they are manipulating on the touchpad and then manipulate it on the screen. The Sprout features a projector called the Illuminator, which operates four different cameras, including an RGB one, an infrared one, a 3D one, and a digital one with a resolution of 14 megapixels. With these you can scan 2D and 3D objects and display them on the Touch mat. After this, you can change the shape of the scanned object, its texture or its colors and then print it with a 3D printer. Tech Times writer, Fergal Gallagher, notes that although there is nothing essentially new about Sprout’s parts, the new thing is that they are brought together in a way that is easy to use, so it is suitable for both professional designers and household users. With a price tag of $1,899 it’s not among the cheapest desktops, but it is still affordable.

Xerox Looks to Boost Partner Revenue with MPS Tools

Xerox is introducing four new tools for its channel partners, looking to help its resellers recurring revenue streams. The new tools include an enhanced managed supplies service, allowing partners to automatically supply replacements for printers that are not under a cost-per-page price plan. Partners can also order and renew their assessment tools and services through the NewField IT e-Commerce Storefront, expecting a more efficient MPS program for their customers. The company will offer a "pro" version of the service at a discounted price to its resellers. A new API is introduced to allow partners to integrate their front-and-back-office systems for more efficient management. Finally, Xerox Digital Alternatives is expected to help customers automate their paper-based process through a desktop and mobile assistant solution. Currently, about 72 percent of SMBs lack an established managed print service, said Mike Feldman, president of Global Document Outsourcing and Large Enterprise Operations at Xerox. “We believe that large and small and medium-size business customers—in other words customers of all sizes—have very similar needs and desires,” said Feldman, in an interview with The VAR Guy. “And we believe that channel partners working with Xerox can deliver this very effectively to our SMB customers.”

New Printer Makes Images with Holes Researchers from the Missouri University of Science and Technology have created an innovative printer that instead of ink uses tiny holes, and when light shines through them, the sheet on which they are punched refracts it in such a way as to create different colors. The idea may sound good but there are two problems with this printer. The first one is that the images it creates are supertiny and can only be seen through an electron microscope. The second is that it doesn’t use just any normal paper. It uses a special silver-coated sheet, with a silica gel between the two silver layers. So, while the new technology can hardly be used for printing photos from a birthday party, it can be used for making security markings on products, for example, or to store information.

2D PRINTER MAKERS ENTER 3D PRINTING WORLD Of course, we all know already that HP is gearing up for the official launch of its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer next year. But it is by no means the only traditional printer maker that is entering the 3D printing market. Gartner’s Pete Basieliere, says he already predicted this entry two years ago, when he said he expected two major digital press makers selling their own 3D printers by 2016. One is, of course, HP, and the other is wide format inkjet printer maker Mimaki, who will launch next month its own 3D printing service hub featuring its own machines. Mimaki boasts that its printers can make as many as 10 million color expressions using four main colors with its 3D printing technology, based on the 2D inkjet one. Mimaki is unwilling to give any further details as it is in the process of applying for a patent for the technology. Now Basiliere expects other 2D printer majors to enter the race, including names such as Canon, Epson, Konica Minolta, and Xerox. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that these traditional printer manufacturers will stay away from 3D printing for much longer. It is, after all the technology of the future.

COLOR FIDELITY IN 3D PRINTING USES 2D PRINTING PRINCIPLES There’s little doubt that 3D printing is the technology of the future, but so far any method used has had one great disadvantage: color fidelity. A 3D-printed apple may be the exact replica of an actual apple but not in terms of color. To solve this problem, a team of scientists from the German Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research are drawing on traditional printing. Like there are pixels in 2D printing, there are voxels, or droplets of printing material, in 3D printing. These voxels are released one by one in the respective colors and are instantly dried with UV lighting. So instead of layer by layer, as the most popular 3D printing machines work, the object is built droplet by droplet. The obvious problems, however, are that this technology needs huge amounts of data and calculations that go into printing an object just a cubic centimeter across, which space contains up to 18 million droplets. In addition, there is the issue with the appearance of the object: the droplets have to be translucent so the UV light can pass through

them to cure them. Because of this, if you want high-fidelity color representation, one would need to control the colors used in the printing process to a depth of just a few voxels. Needless to say, this makes the whole process even more complex. To solve the problem, the researchers, led by Alan Brunton, have drawn on traditional printing, again using a technique called half-toning, in which continuous colors are replaced by groups of various-sized dots spaced differently. In addition, they are utilizing a way of calculating the color of a surface based on light scattering in several voxel layers. The combination of techniques has already proven successful, although the scientists don’t say how long it takes to print such a high-color fidelity object.

3D PRINTING HELPS CANCER PATIENT IN CHINA A man suffering a very rare for m of cancer, sacral chordoma, has been saved thanks to 3D printing. Sacral chrodoma affects just about one in a million people. It originates in the sacrum, a triangular group of vertebrae at the base of the spine. In the case of Wang Li, the tumor was so deeply rooted in the bone that it had to be removed. However, living without a sacrum is no easy matter. The patient becomes unable to stand or walk, which is where 3D printing came to the rescue. Doctors from the Peking University People’s Hospital printed a replica of Wang’s sacrum made from porous titanium, ensuring that the bones around will fuse with it as they would with a natural bone. The success of the surgery holds promise for other cancer sufferers whose bones are affected by tumors and need to be removed at the risk of leaving them severely handicapped. Perhaps 3D printing could some day help avoid cancer-caused amputations, too?

WEBCAST TO DISCUSS 3D PRINTING POTENTIAL IN TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION It’s hardly news that the aerospace and auto industries are among the business areas that are most interested in 3D printing and its application for the creation of simultaneously lightweight and reliable component parts. To discuss the topic, DE Virtual Desktop held a webcast. The participants were Simon Floyd, director of business development and strategy for product lifecycle management at Microsoft, and Michelle Boucher, vice president of engineering software research at TechClarity, a research company that focuses on how business uses software technology, identifying best practices, and how companies can use IT to achieve operational improvement.

WINBO 3D PRINTS ENGINE Chinese 3D printer manufacturer Winbo has showcased an entire engine-3D printed using 18 machines. The engine is a Toyota 4 Cylinder Engine 22RE, a working model, and the design was provided by a user of Thingiverse. The end product has 130 parts that were individually printed, which took three days in all. The engine is fully functional and was worth $95.92 in terms of filament. To compare, traditionally manufactured engines take an average of five months and cost thousands of dollars.

SHAREBOT WORKS ON NEW FILAMENTS Italian 3D printing company Sharebot, who has been already supplying small and medium enterprises with userfriendly 3D printers for some time, has now focused on developing improved filaments. The first in the new series is called Nylforce 550, which was designed specifically for flexible objects. It’s transparent and can be used for mechanical parts that need to be not just flexible but also durable.

FORD, CARBON3D JOIN FORCES Ford has partnered with startup Carbon3D to create customized 3D printed car components, such as steering wheels. The carmaker expects that this sort of components will at some point become the norm in the industry and wants to make the best of this new opportunity. Carbon3D recently made headlines when it said its proprietary 3D printing technology is inspired by “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. Unlike other 3D printing companies, Carbon3D, whose president is a chemical engineering professor, uses a process similar to growing crystals, which forms objects like the movie villain T 1000 morphed into different shapes. Carbon3D has so far attracted $51 million funding from Sequoia Capital, Silver Lake Kraftwerk, and Autodesk’s Spark Investment Fund.

3D SYSTEMS STOCK SLIPS The shares of one of 3D printing’s giants, 3D Systems, have accumulated losses of 8.28% in the last four weeks. Over the past 12 months, 3D System’s stock has declined by a significant 64.57%, touching a low of $19.83 and a high of $69.56. Currently, the company’s market capitalization stands at $2.243 billion, with 111.797 million outstanding shares. The persistent decline in the company stock could be seen as an indication of the advancing maturity of the 3D printing market, with new players entering and technology advances constantly pushing back the boundaries of 3D printing.

ELEVATE GRAPHICS OFFERS 3D PRINTED MAPS AS ART A Dutch startup is pushing the boundaries of 3D printing applications further, offering clients customized 3D printed maps that can serve not just as maps, but as art objects. All the client has to do is select the area that will be on the map, select the scale, and then pick an appearance: night view, vintage, or minimal, for instance. The client can even choose whether the map will show just the natural landscape or the transport and urban infrastructure. Currently, the company is offering two sizes: 20x20 cm (which costs $108) and 50x50 cm (at $393). Once the

FLORIDA TECH SCHOOL INSTALLS 50 3D PRINTERS It’s no secret that education is one of the biggest growth sectors for 3D printing, alongside medicine and mechanical engineering. In the latest evidence of this growth potential, the Florida Institute of Technology has bought 50 3D printers from China’s Zhuhai CTC Electronics to install in its electronics lab. One of the managers of the laboratory commented that the institute is thrilled with the opportunity and said that CTC’s 3D printers enjoy a very good reputation on the US market. It is perhaps this reputation that ensured such a large-scale deal for the Chinese company, the first one of such magnitude for a Chinese 3D printer maker in the US educational sector. The lab manager, David Beavers, attributed the choice to the reliability and high quality of the CTC Bizer printers.

LOCAL MOTORS SUPPLIES FIRST 3D PRINTED CAR TO MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Local Motors, a startup that joined forces with Michigan University on its DDM University project, has delivered the first 3D printed car to the educational institution. The car is one of three that will be used in research. The vehicles are made from an ABS/carbon fiber composite plus a softer material called NinjaFlex, manufactured by another company, Fenner Drives. The softer material is on the seat and the front and back fenders. Some of the research it will be used in will focus on transportation-on-demand and the challenges it presents when it is provided through autonomous vehicles, the leader of the SmartCarts project and part of DDM University, told 3DPrint.

Xerox Looks to Boost Partner Revenue with MPS Tools Xerox is introducing four new tools for its channel partners, looking to help its resellers recurring revenue streams. Canon’s New Office Design: Different Zones Cater to Different Work Styles No bins at employee desks at the new Brisbane offices of camera-printer giant Canon, nor does Canon want staff to use certain desks for more than two hours. The logic behind the change: improved efficiency and staff collaboration. “Like every business, Canon needs to continually find ways to ... get more productive,” Canon Oceania managing director Yusuke Mizoguchi said. So last year, their Sydney headquarters got a new workplace design catering to different working patterns. This has been replicated in their new Brisbane CBD offices, outfitted for $1.4 million. Different zones are geared toward different work styles. Among the unusual ideas is the lack of bins at staff desks. Instead, there are three main rubbish bins in the kitchen. Canon argues this system means more effective rubbish disposal — and employees get a break from their desk. There are also different types of desks. Some are larger workstations for longer hours; others are smaller with signs saying, “should not be used more than two hours. Canon characterizes some staff as “focused” — more likely to sit down and want a fixed phone line, while others are “mobile” — spending more time meeting customers and for whom permanent desks are not critical. Additionally, the airy staff kitchen has roundtable sitting areas, again designed to get staff to share ideas. The new CBD office has green initiatives — recycled tire pieces in potted plants — and consolidates two suburban Brisbane worksites. That saves $250,000 annually. Human resources director, Effie Fox, said staff feedback was that efficiency had improved, and Ms. Fox added that it focused on “the power of ... cross-functional cooperation and collaboration”. “They’re not just nice words,” she said. “The aim is to get people from sales-service working together in a very purposeful way to serve the customer.” Michael Molloy, of Queensland University of Technology’s School of Design, said workplace design is “always a changing beast”, with technology having a major impact on office space. Changing workplaces have tangible benefits, he said. This included potentially improving staff productivity and retention, as well as client perceptions.

Canon Introduces New ImageRunner Advance Line in Philippines

Canon Philippines just launched onto the local market its latest line of multifunctionals from the imageRunner Advance portfolio. There are three printers in the lineup: the C3320, the C3325, and the C3330. According to the president of Canon’s local branch, the printers offer high-quality images, superior performance, excellent productivity and are best for small and medium enterprises. The MFPs can deliver printing speeds of up to 20-30 ppm in landscape format. One of them, the C3330, is the first printer with an LCD display, which can provide video footage of the printer as a means of instructing the user on how to change the cartridge or other consumable.

Canon Releases Printer for Instagram Fans In addition to the social networks listed above, the PRINT app also works with Google Cloud Print, which lets users print directly from Google Docs and Gmail. However, the best advantage of the MG3630 over other printers is that you don’t need your laptop to print the photos. Xerox Wins £40 Million NHS Business Service Authority Printing Contract Xerox has been selected by NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) to manage its production and printing of secure and non-secure business forms, as part of a £40 million contract that aims to support a shift towards agency's digitalization and automation. The three-year contract will see Xerox print approximately 800 million prescription for ms a year, and be responsible for reviewing how these forms are managed, in order to remove any duplicated processes. About the NHS Business Services Authority: it is a Special Health Authority and an Arms Length Body of the Department of Health which provides a range of critical central services to NHS organizations, NHS contractors, patients and the public. Since it became operational in 2006, the NHSBSA has implemented significant improvements across all business processes, introduced a new management model of shared services and dedicated business streams, developed a robust scorecard, measured and used customer feedback and benchmarked services. Whilst care must always be taken when analyzing the financial benefits of business transformation, the NHSBSA calculates that it has delivered £69.7m savings between 2005-06 and 2011-12. When these savings are considered alongside those calculated in previous years, the NHSBSA has delivered cumulative efficiencies of £232.8m which have been available to the Department of Health for reinvestment in front line services.

Konica Minolta Showcases New Printers in Northeastern India Konica Minolta presented a number of new printers and copiers in northeaster n India, including textile printers, industrial inkjet printer heads, and a variety of printing inks. The new machines and consumables were manufactured in Japan and China and they all feature low energy consumption, some 77% lower on the Typical Electricity Consumption scale. The printers also use a biomass toner, which is more energy efficient without compromising the quality of the images produced by the printers.

Epson Philippines President Eyes Further Growth in 2015

Epson Philippines is the top seller of printers and projectors in the country but its president Toshimitsu Tanaka is not planning to sit back and relax. According to him, what the company needs to do now is watch for the next big growth opportunity in order to be able to take advantage of it as it comes. Tanaka, who has been with Epson for 34 years, succeeded in turning the Philippines into the best market for the company’s products in Southeast Asia and he attributed the success to understanding customer needs. The company is now expanding production capacities in the Philippines, with a 12.3-billion yen investment in a new plant for inkjet printers and 3LCD projectors. The plant will be operational in two years.

OCP Ends Exclusive Distribution Ink manufacturer announces conclusion of exclusive distribution agreement with UK-based Promax Imaging. OCP announced that the exclusive distribution agreement with Promax Imaging for the sale and distribution of OCP inks in the United Kingdom and Ireland has ended. Promax Imaging has represented OCP since 2002. INTEGRAL Holds Presentation on European Chemical Law REACH at Focus on Europe Conference

Mr. Jan H. Hagemann, Managing Director at INTEGRAL, the German manufacturer for The Toner for Better Images, held a presentation about REACH and its impact on the toner industry at the annual Focus on Europe Conference, which took place in Rome on June 4-5, 2015. “REACH Revisited: The Impact of REACH on the Toner Industry” was aimed at drawing attention to the European Chemical Law REACH and its effects on the toner business, namely in terms of obligations that every player in the market should be attentive to, as well as at raising awareness about the implications of non-compliance. Among other topics, it was highlighted the obligations for sellers of toner to have their toner ingredients (pre)registered under REACH, at a time when REACH enforcement has started to take place in all European countries, through on-site inspections. Legal consequences will apply in cases of non-compliance, ranging from heavy fines to prison terms. As a REACH early-adopter, INTEGRAL was also able to give afirst-hand testimonial about the implementation of REACH regulation within the company, highlighting what to expect from a REACH inspection, which INTEGRAL has already gone through and passed successfully. Remanufacturing the Brother HL 3140 Series Toner Cartridges TN-221/225 Color Toner Cartridges By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide.

The Brother HL-3040 printer engine is based on a new 19ppm black and color, 600 x 2400 DPI color LED engine. The machines come standard with a fixed memory of 64Mb, and runs off a 333 MHz processor. With print speeds of 19ppm and a list price starting at $299.00, these machines are becoming very popular. The toner cartridges do not have a reset chip on them, but do have a reset gear that must be positioned properly for the machine to accept it as a new cartridge. The STD and HY cartridges use a different reset gear. The starter cartridges that initially came with new printers do not come with a rest gear. A new gear can be added and the starter cartridge made into a full TN221 or 225 cartridge. The proper reset positions of the gear will be covered later in this instruction. In addition to new reset gears being available, there is also an optional kit to convert a color cartridge to a black so that it fits into the drum unit properly. Sometimes black toners are in short supply and this allows you to satisfy you customer. While it’s never advisable to take a black and create a color cartridge, it is possible to take a color and make a black from it.

The drum unit is new as well; Part # DR221CL and is rated for 15,000 pages. This unit has 4 separate drums laid out in line. It will be covered in a future article. If you’re familiar with Brother cartridges, you know they do not work like other manufacturers cartridges. This series of printers is no exception. I won’t repeat it all here as nothing has really changed in the printing theory, but if you’d like a refresher please see our HL-3040 TN-210 instructions.

Once a new blade is available, great care will have to be taken not to tear the seals causing a leak. The doctor blade can be easily cleaned by blowing the excess toner off, and wiping down with a lint free cloth. Be very careful not to leave any lint behind and do not use any chemicals to clean it!

2015 年 7 月 1 日,中央国家机关政府采购中心发布了《关于 2015 年中 央国家机关通用耗材定点采购有关事宜的通知》,该《通知》从执行方式、执 行期限、信息查询、采购价格、定点采购执行程序、采购流程、监督管理、联 系方式等八个方面对本次采购进行了说明。 据悉,中央国家机关政府采购中心首先通过公开招标择优确定了通用耗材 生产企业,再让企业推荐的所有定点供应商进行二次报价,最终确定 2015 年 中央国家机关通用耗材定点供应商。 本次采购执行期限为 2015 年 7 月 1 日至 2016 年 6 月 30 日,共选定通 用耗材定点供应商 44 家 ( 含 12 家电子商城经销商),其中包括天威、格之格、 莱盛、麦普等知名企业。
