FaLL FaSHION GETS INDIVIDUaL
et ready for the wild side — however tempered by a moody gray attitude. This season, fall fashion breaks the rules and follows a rebel’s yell; then it comes back purring and demure. Expect the unexpected, like feathers teasing out the softer side of leather and spikes getting in the face of conservative tweeds. Confused? You don’t have to be. We’ve navigated the catwalks and picked a dozen ways for you to stand out from the crowd — all very much on trend, supremely wearable and mutable enough to make your own.
interspersing these metal teeth and claws with chunky rhinestones, glittery sequins and other reflective adornments. Be as bold as you dare… just remember to stash a few adhesive bandages in your purse. Tee time
Yes, it’s true. T-shirts with price tags of $350, or more, are flying off the shelves this season. A staple of casual dressing, the T-shirt has transcended itself and become a fashion icon. Fashionistas love vintage finds, and designers have listened. Look for reproductions of iconic logos, political campaigns or standout concerts — all realized in soft, washed cotton. To up the ante, why not embellish your new tee with safety pins, lace overlays or creatively sliced sections. It’s a perfect match for this season’s love affair with distressed, torn jeans.
Biker chic
If there’s one element that defines the look of fall, it’s leather. The classic biker jacket is back in full force. However, By even hardcore Harley Davidson styles have become TraCI lighter and more tailored DUTTON than ever before. A proper fit, a supple hand, LUDWIG and gorgeous hardware are key to versatility. Invest in a jacket you love, and you’ll wear it with everything. There’s no better way to add chic style to jeans or give feminine dresses an unexpected edge. But why stop there? Leather is also driving the current obsession with skirts, pants and dresses — particularly when fashioned in unusual, colored or quilted leathers. Go for pieces in bold, solid colors, with defined silhouettes and articulated stitching or metal hardware. Just remember to pair leather with softer coordinating separates to find your Zen. Contrast here brings the best balance of energy. A leather skirt and a leather bustier? Too much. But leather trousers and a mohair sweater? Just right! Gray skies
Rainy days or sunshine, this season’s mood plays with a palette of subtle grays. Encompassing the range of all mixed cocktails of black and white, this season’s favorite shade is a true chameleon. Steely grays look crisp and elegant. Smoky grays are soft and romantic. Muddy grays are a tease, as they play at being greens or browns or lilacs. Go for subtle tonal variations expressed through richly textured layers, or exploit the drama of contrast through neutral-based color blocks (i.e. gray, white and black or gray, navy and beige). These combinations work beautifully for everyone and are anything but boring. For classic military looks — one of fall’s perennial passions — gray is the most modern interpretation. Ouch!
Studs and spikes are the embellishment of the moment. Look for them everywhere — and we mean EVERYWHERE. From their origins in the world of street punk, their hard edge lends a distinctive bite to mainstream styles too. Expect to see pointy shards added to basic black, enhancing shoulders, cuffs and shoes. This season, they are also taking a supporting role in accessories like chokers, bracelets and handbags. Man killer? Yes. Lethal? No. To soften the look of spikes, some designers are
Deconstructed denim
Everything old is new again — denim included. Anything goes. The look is all about deconstruction and confidence. With enough attitude, distressed jeans transcend their sloppiness and look deliberate. The look says, “I’m confident and don’t need perfection to look good. Even in these ‘old jeans,’ I know how to pull it together. I don’t need your approval.” What could be sexier that that? For novices, keep the rest of your look neat when wearing torn jeans. A sleek tank top and a jacket with men’s tailoring are good choices; or if you go for a T-shirt, tuck it in. Complete the look with a ponytail or loose, messy curls — or anything that looks effortless. Courtesy of Gabriella’s en VoGue
Pattern repe at
As a balance to the season’s dominant solids, predominantly gray and black, designers have also embraced repetitive graphic patterns. Tight geometric repeats in retrained color combinations are chic and bold. Go for dresses to avoid adding additional garments, which may be a distraction. Bold jewelry and bags — whose shapes play off the particular geometry of the print — finish the look with style. Pantsuits are another option, albeit a trickier choice. To avoid the wallpaper look of a head-to-toe pattern, choose pantsuits with interesting construction details or distinct tailoring. This way, the overall pattern can read as a “solid” background, and the details can catch the eye instead. Country house
Houndstooth, tweed, tartan and plaid — oh my! Fashion is really fickle. Just when you thought you could be perfectly happy living fearless adventures in an orange leather skirt, along comes a conservative Brit to steal your heart — and bring you back to reality. In addition to the crazy leather minis and ripped jeans in your closet this season, be sure to make space for a few classic pieces. Channel the spirit of the English countryside or an Ivy League campus in the 1940s with prints and silhouettes borrowed from these settings. The silhouettes of men’s suiting pair well with these fabrics. Look for wide-legged pants, cuffed trousers, vests and pantsuits, as well as more overt feminine interpretations, such as A-line skirts and jumpers. Be as conservative as you want with this look, yet add at least one touch of irony or funk. Try white shirts, nubby sweaters, riding boots, tights, continued on page
