No longer just a decorator’s secret for adding personality to homes, Baxter & Co. Home is Westchester’s destination source for serious antiques, vintage furniture and unique accessories. Owners Mary Mayland and Claudia Dworaczyk don’t just scout fabulous objects — they create them. “We’re not a typical antiques shop where old is always old. Sometimes we take old and give it a new look,â€? Mary says. “We love finding interesting pieces with great bones. Then we twist them up with vibrant paint colors, luxe glazes, metal leafing or unexpected finishes. The look is fresh, modern and unique.â€? For rooms that electrify and corners that wink, the Katonah shop is bursting with unusual objects. Bring home one-of-a-kind gems like a cherry-red Federal mirror, a Pembroke table clothed in silver leaf, 1950s lamps with lightning-blue shades, art deco tobacco stamps, lacquered Chinese rice boxes ‌ and much more! Mary and Claudia are at your service. Stop by for inspiration or a great find. With an ever-changing inventory, there’s always something fabulous and fun. Tails have been wagging since Must Love Dogs opened in downtown Katonah. Four-legged friends of all sizes and breeds can expect spa-like attention from master groomer and owner Jessica Riina. Two-hour sessions involve bathing, drying, and intensive grooming of hair, skin and nails. Biodegradable shampoos and natural perfumes, homemade by Jessica from essential oils, are sensitive to canine well-being. Every dog should be groomed for looks and good health. “Groomers really know their dogs’ bodies and can recognize fleas, ticks, growths, and other signs of disease. When dogs are well-groomed, they not only look better, they feel better, Jessica says. The retail shop features fine specialty harnesses, leashes, jackets, toys, bones, Puppia brand products and natural skin care products, including Jessica’s perfume and chemical-free flea and tick repellents. Excellent customer service and Jessica’s animal intuition stand out: “I feel a special connection to my dogs and their owners; I love dogs; so I love what I do — and it shows! Tutoring Club in Katonah is part of a respected national franchise offering personalized programs to help students from kindergarten through high school “catch up and keep up, learn and retain critical skills, and prepare for academic success. Owned by Patricia A. Wagner, Ed.D., with a master’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in education — both from Teachers College, Columbia University — Tutoring Club is in its sixth year here. Tutors specializing in all levels of mathematics, reading, science and international languages join Dr. Wagner, who was on staff at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York Medical College and Teachers College, Columbia University. An initial skills assessment shows each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. A mastery-based learning plan is developed, individualized to focus on each child’s skill gaps and the development of new skills. A low student-teacher ratio ensures personalized attention. It takes approximately 16 hours to progress one grade level in mathematics, Dr. Wagner says, 32 hours in reading. Tutoring Club specializes in standardized test preparation — SSAT and ISEE through to PSAT, SAT and ACT, plus Regents. The next SAT course begins in early January. Hours: Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as needed. (Sports schedules can be accommodated).

en Cook, owner of NoKa Joe’s — a coffee and sweet shop in Katonah across from the train station — has opened a new children’s bookstore above NoKa Joe’s. Little Joe’s Books is the only children’s bookstore in northern Westchester. Jen says that people have been asking her to open a bookstore for years and a recent survey to more than 800 customers reinforced that desire. As a result, Little Joe’s Books opened in early October. Little Joe’s Books is warm and welcoming. Moms, dads and caregivers are encouraged to grab a latte or tea downstairs, wander up with their kids, and stay awhile. You’ll find a comprehensive selection for infants through teenagers — old favorites as well as the best of new literature. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about children’s books and enjoys nothing more than talking to kids (and adults) about books. There are lots of things happening at Little Joe’s Books, including story hour every Thursday at 4:15; a reading program once a month where children are encouraged to read to Whoopsie Daisy, the store’s reading dog; as well as many author visits each month. Visit their website, www.LittleJoesBooks.com, to sign up to receive emails about all store events. As we enter the holiday season, don’t forget that books make the best gifts! And Little Joe’s Books gift wraps for free. Or buy a gift card that is good for books and sweets from NoKa Joe’s downstairs. What kid wouldn’t like that?

For 16 years in Norwalk, Conn., and 10 years in Bedford Hills, Fountainhead Wines has been bringing value-oriented wines — in all price ranges and styles — to its thirsty patrons. As savvy wine buyers know, it’s easy to overspend on wines that leave the imbiber looking for more. Owners Mike Pelletier and Mark Ancona have spent a combined 40 years deep in the wine trade — in London and New York — ferreting out small production, quality-driven wines that offer wine drinkers much more for their dollar. Fountainhead Wines directly sources from 15 European growers in France, Germany and Italy and handles perhaps the most cutting-edge portfolio of Oregonian pinot noir on the East Coast. Mike and Mark taste a dizzying array of wines throughout the year from the best importers to ensure the best selection in whatever category the patron desires: full-bodied reds in the $10 to $15 range, lighter whites in the $15 to $20 range, etc. Mike and Mark are also responsible for the wine selections at Fat Cat Pie Co. in Norwalk, their wine bar that was named one of the top 50 wine experiences in the country by Food and Wine magazine. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Located in Bedford Hills in Depot Plaza, directly across from the Metro-North train station, Bedford House is an eclectic treasure-trove of modern furniture, antiques, fine consignments and gifts. Co-owners Dennis Anderson and Lesa Vogliano opened the shop in June and ever since have been helping grateful customers solve their decorating dilemmas. Whether your home is on the market and would show better with a brighter, fresher look or you have a new home and are starting from scratch, Bedford House is the place to begin. Dennis, a furniture designer, has worked in the North Carolina furniture industry for 40 years and knows it inside and out. Local Realtor Lesa understands just how fantastic any home can look with the perfect furniture, lighting and accessories. Talk to Dennis and Lesa about upgrading or staging your residence with furniture, lamps, mirrors, pillows, shawls, blankets, tabletop items and more. hurchills of Mount Kisco is now going into its second successful year. Opening in the summer of 2009 was not the easiest in a down economy, but our strong and dedicated team road the wave. We cater to a great mix of Westchester, Manhattan and lower Connecticut shoppers who seek special and unique clothing. Our clients rave about the compliments and new-found confidence they get from wearing the designers that we carry. In fact, they and the editors of Westchester magazine named us the best boutique in the area for 2010 — proof that Churchills has a happy clientele. Back in 2009, Daniele Churchill and Lori Land, coowners of this northern Westchester boutique, both had the vision of bringing a shopping experience for both men and women to their hometown area. Not just another clothing store, Churchills carries clothes that speak to the soul. “We call it feel-good clothing, says Land. Every season we like to discover new brands from around the globe. Of course we carry beautiful merchandise from Europe and the U.S., but we also have great lines from Australia, South America and Asia. Our philosophy on price is to incorporate different price points so as not to alienate any of our priceconscious shoppers who still want quality clothing. What’s new at Churchills? We’ve expanded our shoe department for both men and women. Coming soon, Churchills will be offering online shopping for our growing out-of-town customer base and our busy local customers who want that quick Churchills fashion fix. And we’re preparing some new and extra special items for Churchills Private Label. You can find Churchills in the heart of Mt. Kisco, within walking distance from the train station. And to accommodate our clients’ busy schedules, we’re open seven days a week.

Bedford Stone & Masonry Supply, a fifth-generation family-owned business, is one of the area’s largest operations — certainly the premier site for masonry and landscape materials. Everett Burbank started Bedford Stone & Masonry in 1925 as a manufacturing plant, but 45 years ago the family turned its focus to stone, masonry and landscape supplies. There’s an enormous selection of natural stone and brick suitable for walkways, patios, pool decks, walls and garden paths, plus mulch, cement, sand, drainage products, decorative gravel, winter ice melters and traction sand. See Bedford Stone’s expansive outdoor garden display with examples of various stone and brick use — a collage of walls, paths, patios, edging and steps. A new indoor space across the street showcases the extensive uses of thin brick and thin stone — perfect for beautifying concrete foundations, chimneys, fireplace surrounds and backsplashes. Lightweight, so no footings or foundations needed! Contractors and homeowners appreciate Bedford Stone’s neat, welcoming atmosphere and the family’s help and advice — as solid as the products they sell. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Closed Saturday during the winter.

ickory & Tweed is celebrating its 50th year in business. What Makes Zachys Different? When my father-in-law, Don Zacharia, purchased Zachys from his father in 1961, he had two visions for the business. First, to introduce fine wine from around the world to a client base that had historically been spirits driven. And secondly, to provide the utmost in customer service and always try to do it with knowledge, humor, flexibility and personality. What was true to Don and his two employees back in 1961 still rings true at Zachys today. We continue to strive to have one of the most complete selections of fine wines and spirits in America. It is not enough for us to have the wine on our shelves but rather to take the time and energy to regularly travel throughout the wine world — seek out the gems — and bring them back to Scarsdale. One of Don’s greatest successes over the last four decades of selling fine wine was his “What Makes Zachys Differentâ€? advertising campaign. This was a series of ads in which he enabled the wine-loving community to learn more about the personalities and activities at Zachys — those things that set it apart from others. With stories like ‌ the sales manager who joined us 30 years ago because his train broke down in Scarsdale and he decided to wait while they serviced the train and applied for a job. Or the personal trainer who had a love for wine and took the part-time job in his free hours in the evening. With a working knowledge of computers, he told us the age of the Internet was coming and he now heads up all the IT operations for the enterprise. Then there was the leading salesman in the store, who has a medical degree but chooses to sell wine because it’s his passion. The customers line up to walk the store, pick his brain and soak up his enthusiasm for wine. And the stories just go on and on and on ... What I take such great pride in when interviewing potential new employees for the store, is making the statement that Zachys would not be half of what it is today
without the great people who work here. It’s staggering the number of employees we have with us currently who have worked for us for 10 years or more. And it’s about the people. People walk through the door at Zachys to be met with a comforting smile and the typical question: “Have you shopped with us before? We want to make you feel welcome as you enter a wine world that is overloaded with regions, varietals and bottles after bottles — so much so that it can be very intimidating. We want you to walk away from your Zachys’ experience with a smile and the satisfaction that this was everything you expected and more. Our philosophy and policy is just the same on the phone, email or website. While those platforms don’t afford as much personal contact, it is our hope to convey to our clients that we are about much more than the wine. t doesn’t happen overnight, but there are usually warning signs when the well-being of your parent is compromised by living alone. Here are some common clues that are cause for concern: Change in eating habits — skipping meals or not eating, and losing weight as a result. Change in mood — seeming depressed, irritable, excessively fearful or boisterous. Increased isolation — no longer enjoying family visits or familiar social routines. Hygiene neglect — wearing soiled clothes, not brushing teeth or bathing, resulting in bad breath or body odor. Frequent bruising, burns or injuries — signaling increased falling, weakness or confusion. Increased forgetfulness — ignoring mail and newspapers, missing appointments or becoming disoriented. Inadequate, spoiled or the wrong kind of food in the house. Misusing medication or alcohol. Gradual decline in household upkeep and maintenance. Mishandling finances — not paying bills, appropriating money to questionable causes, spending beyond means or hoarding cash. As soon as your aging parent starts to show deterioration in health and the condition of home, take notice. This is the time to introduce the idea of getting assistance, long before a crisis develops. Seek support from other family members to consider what choices are best and realistic for all involved. If in-home care is not adequate, or if moving your parent into your home is not an option,
then assisted living is worth considering. The role reversal of aging parents and children is a common challenge The Kensington can help manage. When the time comes to have “the talk” with your parent, here are some tips to help make it a little easier: Be specific — use factual examples to explain why you think assistance is a good idea. Express concern from your point of view and explain how much you care — do not accuse or demand. Be patient — you will likely have this conversation more than once. Tread slowly and gently — describe how you want to be able to enjoy each other, and that preserving health and safety would make that possible. Solicit your parent’s thoughts, feelings and opinions. Some adults welcome the idea of change. But others are resistant, even when the need for assistance is obvious. If you’re running into conflict, then talk with Susie Sarkisian, geriatric care manager at The Kensington, an enhanced assisted living residence that recently opened at 100 Maple Ave. in White Plains. Susie is an expert at helping families introduce the idea of moving to an assisted living community, and she follows the transition all the way through till move-in day — and after. elcome to piano heaven. Faust Harrison Pianos is the New York area’s foremost piano dealership and America’s largest independent retailer of fully rebuilt Steinway and Mason & Hamlin pianos. But unlike other dealers that only sell pianos, Faust Harrison maintains the time-honored tradition of hand craftsmanship that has made them the most respected piano restoration center in the country. The company’s pianos are in demand by professional musicians, orchestras, concert halls, educational institutions and students all over the world. This year, the company combined its retail and restoration operations into one unique facility on the campus of the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains. The 24,000-square-foot Faust Harrison Piano Center, a combination of piano showrooms, performance spaces, art galleries and a state-of-the-art restoration shop, is an extraordinary new cultural and educational asset for the Conservatory, for the city of White Plains and for Westchester County. Faust Harrison is also working with The Yamaha Corporation to advance and promote piano technology, including the revolutionary AvantGard hybrid piano that combines the touch and sound of a concert grand with the convenience, size and technological capabilities of a super-high-end digital instrument. Visitors are invited to tour Faust Harrison’s workshops, to visit the showrooms or to consult with one of Faust Harrison’s sales staff — all professionally trained musicians. They work carefully with every client to achieve the perfect match between player and instrument. Hours: Westchester showroom and factory: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Evenings and Sundays by appointment. Linda Angel, owner of Art Transcending Time, designs jewelry that is more than just an accessory to wear; it is a true work of art. She incorporates antique Italian micro mosaics with semi-precious stones strung on silk to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Her jewelry is crafted in a wide variety of colors, most typically in blues, greens and warm earthy tones. “I get inspired by each antique mosaic that I work with,” Linda says. Her custom-made necklaces are created by combining a sparkling antique chandelier crystal with a personal photo, often of ancestors. “I love making these memory pieces for my customers,” says Linda, adding that she enjoys hearing the personal stories and history some of her customers share while ordering their jewelry. “Each necklace represents a connection between the past and present.” Stop into Linda’s studio and boutique to see her at work and learn more about her “unique handmade jewelry transcending time.” Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Saturday to 3 p.m.

This is why we put so much emphasis on our clients — you’re not just a number here.” Their resident artist, Stefanie Diaz, also ensures a unique experience. Stef is a trained design and canvas artist who adds a distinctive touch to the overall look of their events. Flower Me Events’ exclusive and contemporary edge is evident in its shop’s ambiance. The art of delicious food has shaped Salvatore Cucullo Jr.’s life. As a boy, he worked in his grandfather’s pizzeria, and later at a family-owned restaurant. No one was surprised when Salvatore attended the Culinary Institute of America, followed by an externship at the exclusive CafĂŠ des Artistes in New York. In May 2010, he and business partner Lynn Kozy opened The 808 Bistro, where every customer feels like a part of the family. Salvatore, also the chef, says his cuisine is described as “Italian without bordersâ€? — with French, Asian, Mediterranean and Latin influences. Using only the freshest, predominantly organic ingredients, the menu’s updated frequently to keep it seasonal. “I’m very passionate about food and believe as a chef that I’m never more important than my ingredients,â€? says Salvatore. Traditional Italian chicken, veal and fish are always offered, and the restaurant accommodates special requests. The bar uses fresh, muddled ingredients to make drinks, and suggested food and wine pairings are always on the menu. New at The 808 Bistro is our “expressâ€? lunch. Tippy, Lawrence Pitonza, Cosmic Carol, Bailey and Brittany
Founded in 2011 by Lawrence Pitonza, Pitonza Productions promotes cooperation and understanding through multicultural and bilingual literature, giving children a sense of family values, understanding and the importance of appreciating the “you” that you are. Lawrence graduated from Purchase College, where he studied under Antonio Frisconi, a world-renowned art-of-the-book creator. Lawrence is also a Westchester hairdresser at Salon Vivace. He works with Hollywood A-listers in photo shoots, commercials, special effects and prosthetics, costume and mask design, wig creations, and set and prop fabrications. He recently wrote and illustrated the book, “Cosmic Carol: Adventures in Color,” to spread the message, “Be you. Be true!” He offers a children’s program called “Autographs With Carol,” where his book is read aloud in a group setting. Afterwards, the children meet and greet Cosmic Carol characters and get their favorite characters’ autographs. “Cosmic Carol: Adventures In Color” is a touching story of a girl from another planet who, along with her pet star, Tippy, is sent to Earth to learn a lesson. During her visit, Cosmic Carol gains friends, but loses her ability to see in color. It’s a story of friendship, respect, learning — and most of all, acceptance of someone “different.” The book was inspired by Lawrence’s mother’s disability of total color blindness. The book can be purchased through Pitonza’s website: cosmiccarol.com.
Anna Krosche
It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

eace, love and dogs has been the mantra at Buddy’s Barking Lot for the past seven years. Eileen Fleming and Susan Ekaireb are the happy owners of Buddy’s. Both are extremely proud of their staff of professionals, most of whom have been working at Buddy’s since its inception. There is even a full-time dog trainer, Wanda, on staff each day. The canine clients at Buddy’s Barking Lot range in size from 4 pounds all the way up to 180 pounds. There is a sense of calm among the pack each day, and they treat one
another as if they are one big happy family. There are no crates or cages, and all of the dogs coexist peacefully. The pack welcomes each newcomer with “open paws.” The secret to the peace is in the doggie interview. “Each dog is interviewed just to make sure they would be comfortable in our setting,” Eileen says. “We can’t and won’t allow any dogs with aggressive tendencies.” To schedule an interview for your dog, or for more information, please contact Buddy’s Barking Lot at 591-7645.
