Hunter’s Ambulance EMT Chris Ryan stands next to his ambulance Tuesday, Dec. 29 at the Berlin Fire Department. Ryan received his COVID-19 vaccination the previous day. First responders in the area have started getting their initial doses of a COVID-19 vaccine as the state rolls out phase one of inoculation. Those eligible under the first phase of vaccinations are healthcare workers, long term care facility residents and first responders, according to the state website. “I think it’s a very good thing,” Ryan said about the vaccine. “If this is going to work, I hope everybody will get it so we can get rid of this pandemic and go back to somewhat normal lives.” Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal

Vehicle thefts, burglaries have spiked
The New Britain Herald reported that car burglaries in the city more than doubled in 2020 compared to 2019. Berlin saw a four-fold increase in the number of stolen vehicles, and thefts from autos have more than doubled in Newington, prompting town officials to write to state legislators for help. Southington reported 93 stolen vehicles in 2020 compared to 41 in 2019, and
car burglaries shot up from 114 to 410, the newspaper reported. Newington Police Chief Stephen Clark said the increase is unlike anything he’s seen in 35 years of policing. He said car breakins often are committed by juveniles who know what they can get away with. “They know all they have to do is get back in the car and we can’t pursue them,” Clark told the Herald. “We’re seeing it frequently, and they’re aware of that.” In Bristol, Deputy Police Chief Richard Guerrera said most car thefts result from owners leaving their keys or key fob in their vehicles. “It usually comes in sprees,” Guerrera told the Herald.
“You usually get 10 to 15 cars being broken into in one section of town and then you won’t see anything for a week or more.”
Gov. Ned Lamont and law enforcement officials from several cities held a videoconference in December to address an overall rise in juvenile crime during the pandemic, attributed to teens having more free time due to remote school and canceled afterschool activities.
123 new cases reported in town
The state’s most recent report, issued Dec. 31, showed 123 positive cases in Berlin. That works out to an average of 43 daily cases per 100,000 people. In the previous report, 149 positive cases were reported in Berlin.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “People with COVID-19 can have mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms can appear two to 14 days after being exposed to the virus. Symptoms can include: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever or chills, muscle or body aches, sore throat, headache, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, runny nose or stuffy nose, fatigue, and recent loss of taste or smell.”

Xmas tree disposal options
Trees will be collected curbside (on, or near, your collection day) the week of Jan. 11, and must be at least six feet away from your automated collection cart so as not to interfere with the disposal of your household refuse. Please remove all wrappings (plastic bags) from the trees prior to disposal. Trees will also be accepted for recycling at the Town Recycling Center on Massirio Drive during normal business hours, Monday

through Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 23, 8 a.m. to noon. For further information on tree collection, call the Public Works office at 860-8287022. The website pickyourownchristmastree.org says if some tree needles scatter inside, it is better to sweep them up; as needles can clog vacuum cleaners. Also, the online Christmas tree resource warns against burning your Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. Pines, firs and other evergreens have a high content of flammable turpentine oils, and burning the tree may contribute to creosote buildup and risk a chimney fire.
Letters to the Editor Why we celebrate Editor : This brief message, written today, Christmas morning, is addressed to Joy VanderLek, who wrote a front page article about … Christmas! She wanted to know how well we knew the holiday, known as Christmas. It seems that she knew nothing of Christmas herself. In her entire front page piece, not once did she mention the birth of Christ, His redemption of us and His Kingship. Instead, she thought it more important to address how “Grandma Got Run Over …” and putting a pickle on a tree.
for the season, not anything else. Jesus' birth is what we are celebrating, not a pickle. Have a wonderful day and a grand New Year.

Martial arts studios adapt to restrictions As a way to stay in operation amid the pandemic, area martial arts centers have adapted to keep students and staff safe.
Valentin Karate Valentin Karate has locations in Meriden, Plantsville, Middlebury and Berlin. Owner Efrain Valentin Jr. said that having a large space at the Meriden location on South Colony Street has been helpful. They have been utilizing colored mats, so students are nine feet apart.
“Kids are barefoot, they are always touching things,” Valentin said. “... The only thing that we had to do was make it more visible … We clean in between classes, anything that gets touched … We required everybody to wear a mask right from the get go.” Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment and sparring bags are not used because they require close contact. In person classes, which cannot exceed 25 participants, are also offered online.
Flu hit, they were talking about shutting down for two weeks and at that point, we started putting our curriculum online, so we were ready to go,” Valentin said.

Public health is expected to be a key part of Lamont’s budget plan. Making sure there are enough resources for vaccinations and testing
is crucial for the state’s economy as it recovers from the pandemic, he said.

Lamont is expected to present a budget proposal in February, which he acknowledged will be “a little
more complicated” given the revenue challenges created by the pandemic. The nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis is projecting a nearly $30 million deficit in the current fiscal year general fund budget; a $757 million deficit in fiscal year 2022; $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2023; and $917 million in fiscal year 2024.

As in pre-pandemic years, lawmakers are expected to consider a wide range of legislation, from increasing access to affordable housing to legalizing adult use of recreational marijuana and sports betting. But both Democrats, who control both chambers of the General Assembly, and Republicans agree that crafting a new two-year state budget amid a continuing pandemic and addressing the wide-ranging fallout from the pandemic will likely be the top priorities.
“We really only should be looking at COVID-related issues. And our budget. And the Connecticut economy,” said Republican Senate leader Kevin Kelly, who hopes to combat plans by the governor to join a multistate climate initiative he contends will increase gas prices and harm taxpayers who’ve been struggling economically because of the pandemic.

After a tumultuous 2020, it may be more imperative than ever to strive for physical, mental, and emotional balance. The good news is that there is someone who might be able to help you reach those goals who’s closer than you think: your dog or cat. That’s right, Fido and Fluffy can provide you with the motivation to get 2021 started on the right track.

(If you and your dog aren’t quite ready to hit that goal at the moment, try a 10 minute walk at your own pace and boost your time by fiveminute increments each week). Some cats even like to go for walks on a leash and harness or in a stroller. Teachers’ union leader urges switch to all-remote learning HARTFORD (AP) — The leader of Connecticut’s largest teachers union is urging school superintendents statewide to switch all classes to remote learning until at least the middle of this month, citing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Jeff Leake, president of the Connecticut Education Association, said many students and educators were to return to classrooms on
Monday, before potential virus surges from the holiday season are over. He said many school districts already have moved to all-distance learning through midJanuary. “While no one is more eager to return to the classroom than Connecticut’s dedicated teachers, detecting and stopping the spread of COVID-19 must be the top priority,” Leake said in a statement Sunday evening.

More than 11,000 coats cleaned and delivered Best Cleaners wrapped up its 12th annual Coats For Connecticut campaign in December, having collected, cleaned and delivered over 11,000 donated coats to the Salvation Army and other local area shelters. The family-owned dry cleaning and tailoring business with 13 locations in central Connecticut tackled the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic with a highsense of urgency and a high degree of health and safety procedures in place.
Leake also called on the state to mandate more COVID-19 testing and said a new survey by his union and the American Federation of Teachers shows “schools are not the safest places for children or educators” amid a pandemic. Gov. Ned Lamont and state education officials have been allowing local school officials to decide whether to switch to all-remote learning but have been advocating for schools to be kept open, saying it’s better for students.
Since the official Nov. 11 kickoff date, the general public, local businesses and community groups were encouraged to gather up gently-used coats and jackets for all ages and sizes and bring them to any Best Cleaners location for free cleaning and delivery.
Since the school year began, nearly 8,500 students and 3,600 educators in Connecticut have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Coat donations could be dropped off at Best Cleaners locations in Berlin, Bristol, Canton, Farmington, Glastonbury, Middletown, North Haven, Old Lyme, Plainville, Rocky Hill, Simsbury and Windsor. Best cleaned and delivered the donated coats each week to a central drop location in Meriden. The Meriden Mall donated the use of a vacant storefront space and gave access to the Salvation Army so volunteers could safely sort the coats and prepare them for distribution to individuals and families throughout Connecticut. Two Men and A Truck donated the use of two storage containers for staging and storing the cleaned coats before each delivery. — Press Release

Investing in gym equipment won’t mean much if you never get around to using it. When you prepare your workout clothes and pack a mock “gym bag” with all the items you need to have an uninterrupted workout, you’re more likely to stick to your planned exercise schedule. Make sure you keep a foam roller in your bag for active recovery days. Your gym space should be a place where you go to connect with your body’s needs no matter how you’re feeling.

They also plan to address issues concerning telecommunications companies interfering with web traffic or speeds. “There’s no shortage of ideas and issues. The challenge will be how this all works remotely,” Duff said.

AARON’S BUYING
REVENUE COLLECTOR’S NOTICE All persons liable to pay taxes on 2nd Installment Real Estate, and Supplemental Motor Vehicles in and to the Town of Berlin, Connecticut, are hereby notified that taxes on the Grand List of October 1, 2019, are due January 1, 2021 and payable in full by February 1, 2021. 2nd Installment Real Estate and all Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes become delinquent if not paid on or before February 1, 2021. REMINDER: Real Estate tax bills over $100 are split into two installments due July 1, and January 1. Per Governor’s Executive Order 7R, the Town Council unanimously voted to adopt the Low Interest Rate Program on delinquent property tax bills: Interest is normally charged at the rate of 1.5% per month, 18% per year from the due date of the tax. This program allows for a lower rate of interest: 0.25% per month, or 3% per year, from the due date of the tax, for a period of three months only. This plan covers installments that come due up through and including January 1, 2021. For the January 1, 2021 installment, the last day to pay is still February 1, 2021 but if the taxpayer pays on February 2nd or later, they will not be paying 1.5% per month interest, but rather only 0.25% per month interest. On February 2, 2021 the interest charged would not be 3%, but rather 0.25 x 2 months or 0.5%. This plan will remain in force only for three months from the due date of January 1,2021, it would end on March 31, 2021. Any and all unpaid back taxes, interest and other charges must be paid in full before payment may be made on the 2019 Grand List taxes.
TO THE TAXPAYERS OF THE WORTHINGTON FIRE DISTRICT, BERLIN, CT:
Interest at the rate of 1.5% per month shall be charged from January 1, 2021 if not paid on or before MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2021, subject to a minimum interest charge of $2.00. ANY AND ALL UNPAID BACK CHARGES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BEFORE PAYMENT MAY BE MADE ON THE OCTOBER 2020 WATER/SEWER FEES.
