Letter to the Editor Editor : With the Planning & Zoning Commission approving an amendment for Planned Residential Infill Development, we are in for big changes on the Berlin Turnpike. Involved presently is 1676 Berlin Turnpike, where
a developer wants to put up 20 two-story rental units, with garages. Each unit is to be 900 square-feet. All of this is to be built on only 1.9 acres, and will open directly onto the Berlin Turnpike. The Planned Residential Infill Development amendment removes all 12 vintage
motel properties on the Berlin Turnpike from commercial use. This will allow only high-density housing, resulting in, potentially, 450 people crammed into these small areas. Due to the tightness of space, would firetrucks even be able to enter these properties? Also, parking would be problematic, likely leading to spillage onto neighboring streets. Turnpike traffic is already on overload. Will additional traffic lights be required? Has concern for the population influx into our schools been considered?

Disheartening Editor : Why did the Planning & Zoning Commission approve the Planned Residential Infill Development amendment targeting all 12 vintage motel properties on the Berlin Turnpike and removing them from commercial zoning? Now those parcels can only be turned into high-density housing. Also, the amendment decreased set-back buffers from 25 to 15 feet on the sides of structures, and from 50 to 15 feet in the rear. That means units can be built 15 feet from neighboring property boundaries. So much for the town taking into account “the nature of the surrounding area and the extent to which the proposed use and its features and appearances will be in harmony with the surrounding area, including the effect of property values in the neighborhood.” This amendment was specifically written for 1676 Berlin Turnpike in order to See Disheartening, A5

You can prevent a big bill with a little cold weather maintenance With winter’s severe weather and cold temperatures blanketing the region, residents can take steps to avoid the damage, cost and inconvenience that comes with a
burst water pipe or damaged water meter. Aquarion Water Company, the largest investor-owned water utility in New England, suggests following a few
simple tips to keep the water safely flowing all winter long:
STUFF TO SELL? Call Us.
203-238-1953
Check water pipes near uninsulated or drafty walls, doors, floors and windows, including in your basement, garage or attic. Add insulation wherever you can.
Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes along outside walls.
Keep all doors and windows tightly closed.
If your water meter is in an outdoor pit, check to see that the pit cover fits properly and has no cracks through which cold air can flow.
Fill cracks in walls and openings around doors and windows. Insulating or wrapping pipes can also help. Locate the main water shutoff valve to your home and show all household members how to turn it off in the event of a burst pipe.
In extreme cold, let faucets drip.
Never use a torch or open flame to thaw a pipe. If you see, or suspect, damage to water pipes, call a licensed plumber for assistance. — Press Release

Talking to your kids about risky behaviors
Tips to plan and guide your conversation Find time to do things you enjoy together as a family, which helps everyone stay connected and maintain open communication. Sometimes kids are more likely to talk when they don’t have to make eye contact — like when you are in the car or walking together. Be clear about risks. A trusted source or friend may mistakenly pass on misinformation or harmful substances.
Senior Transportation Services, Inc. is looking for safe, reliable volunteers willing to use their own car to help some of Berlin, New Britain, Meriden, Wallingford, Southington & Plainville’s elderly residents get to medical appointments in the area.
Take advantage of teachable moments. If you see a character in a movie or on TV with a cigarette, talk about smoking and what it does to a person's body. This can lead to a talk about other drugs. Keep your tone calm and use terms that your child can understand. Simply explain the realities of poor choices.
We invite you to help your neighbors!
And continue having these conversation over time. Talking to kids about drugs and alcohol is not a one-anddone conversation. You have to keep talking to them about it. It doesn’t have to be a confrontational thing, or a lecture. Let them know you're always there for them.

BERLINThomas F. Grant, Sr., 77, of Kensington, beloved husband to his high school sweetheart, Lauren (Nordgren) Grant, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 9, 2022. Born on January 1, 1945, he was the son of the late Joseph J. Grant, Sr. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Potts) Grant. His claim to fame was that he was the first baby born on New Year’s Day in New Britain in 1945 and received several gifts from local businesses. He was also very proud to have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in his youth. Tom graduated from New Britain Senior High School in 1963 and received his bachelor’s degree from Central CT State College. While at CCSC, he began working with his future father-in-law at Portable Power Tool Repair, Inc., in New Britain. He later acquired the business and moved it to Kensington where he operated it for 32 years until his retirement in 2002. Once retired, he and Lauren became “snowbirds” to Naples, FL, for the winter. They also enjoyed spending time at their house on Cape Cod, MA. Tom was an animal lover and often visited the CT Humane Society “just to see what they had” and usually came home with a new cat and one time two, twins. Golden Retrievers and Yellow Labs were his favorite breed of dogs and he had several of each during his lifetime. He was a fan of the New England Patriots and UCONN Women’s basketball. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and wheel thrown pottery. He was also a talented artist creating many oil paintings including portraits of family members. He was a man of few words but had a quick wit when the opportunity arose.
KENSINGTON- Donald A. Hrenko of Berlin, Connecticut, passed away peacefully Friday, January 28th at the Conklin Building at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his life partner, Gladys “Sis” Johnson, his brother, James Hrenko, his nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends who adored him. At a young age, Don found a love for adventure in the outdoors and a passion for working with his hands. This was exemplified by the cabin he built in Vermont with his late friend, Andy Znosko. Together they spent any time off up at the cabin, fishing in the nearby lakes and snowmobiling through the peaceful green mountains. Don continued to venture to his favorite place with “Sis” for long weekend retreats for the duration of his retirement. Don always had a fascination with small engine machines and worked a long, successful career at Mickey Finn’s Honda. A customer could always trust that they would walk away with the exact product they needed with Donald’s help. After retirement, you could still find him tinkering around his house and yard each day on his John Deere tractor. Donald’s life was heavily guided by Christian principles. He was a devout Catholic and an extremely active member in the St. Paul’s parish. He was generous with his time and always welcoming with his friends and family. One thing he will always be remembered for is his passion for cooking. After his travels around the world, Donald loved trying to recreate the dishes he experienced, and had an extra setting at the table for anyone who wanted to join. Donald enjoyed spending time over a delicious meal,

Tom was very proud of his family and loved them all dearly. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lauren and their four children: Beth Pipkin, Thomas Grant, Jr. and his wife Jane, Christopher Grant and his wife Jennifer, and Joyce Vento and her husband Giancarlo; grandchildren: Jacob Pipkin, Toni-Ann and Thomas “TJ” Grant, Brooke Grant, Makaila Cerrone, Marla Vento and his golden retriever, Sofie. Besides his parents, Tom was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia “Patty” Grant and Betsy Carlson and his brother, Joseph J. Grant, Jr. The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at the Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice Care for their kindness, compassion and assistance which allowed Tom to stay at home. At Tom’s request, his funeral service and burial were private. There were no calling hours. Burial was in West Lane Cemetery, Kensington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111. Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain is assisting with arrangements. and had many standing donut, lunch, and dinner dates that spanned many years. Donald was a huge presence in the lives of the Hrenko, Brown, and Farrell children. They were always lucky to get cheered on by Uncle Don at sporting events, musicals, graduations, and birthday parties. When Don entered the hospital early last year, he fought to return home to his best friend, Sis. His love for her was unparalleled; based on a lifelong friendship of over 70 years that began in grade school. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday, February 3rd at 10 am at St. Paul’s Church, 461 Alling Street, Berlin. Burial will follow in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. The family asks that you take all the covid precautions you can by wearing a mask and social distancing. Calling hours were held on Wednesday, February 2nd from 4-7 pm at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin/ Porters, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Berlin. Meanwhile, at the height of the pandemic, the auxiliary donated over 1,000 boxed lunches to the New Britain General Campus staff and the Cancer Center staff.
