Police warn of ‘check washing’ scam Citizen report
Perhaps "thieves coming up with new ways to steal money" should be added to the old death and taxes saying. Recently, people across Connecticut have fallen victim to a sceme known as “check washing.” In this scam, personal checks are stolen from post office drop boxes and altered so that funds end up in the hands of criminals. “Unfortunately, it’s sad that here we now have to worry about checks that we’re writing to pay bills," Lisa Dadio, University of New Haven law enforcement expert, told See Check washing, A5
Last week, the Berlin Lions Club donated $10,000 in gift cards to the Berlin Veterans Commission. Pictured at the presentation are, from left: Bob Smith, Dean Revoir, Charles Colaresi, Peter Galgano, Richard Yale, Paul Eshoo and Ron Bosco. “We are doing this to honor and show appreciation to our veterans who have sacrificed so much for us, and it is also a fundraiser to raise money for local veterans and widows of veterans in need,” stated Bosco, luminary display chairman.

WFSB. “They are, theoretically, washing the check using some type of chemical process to remove some of the information and alter it."
In a Feb. 2 social media message, the Berlin Police Department said it has "received an increased number of complaints" regarding incidents of check washing.
"The checks are being altered by the thieves, who are changing the payee and the amount and then cashing or depositing the checks," the post states. "Victims are often made aware of the theft when the intended recipient does not receive payment." To protect against check washing scammers, the Berlin Police Department
urges residents to avoid using public mailboxes to send "valuable items or anything containing private information." The department suggests going inside the post office to ship such things. The Berlin PD said, "The U.S. Postal Inspectors are aware of this issue and have been working with local law enforcement."
Residents who believe they have been a victim of a check washing scam should

Heart health program High blood pressure, or hypertension, can affect anyone. It is often called a silent killer because it has no obvious signs or symptoms.
Take control of your heart health
High blood pressure can cause heart disease and stroke — leading causes of death for all Americans. That's why it’s so important to check your blood pressure, regularly. One way to improve your heart health is by reducing the amount of sodium in your diet.
Join our interactive class right from the comfort of your phone, computer or tablet and learn more about:
Checking labels is the only way to know how much sodium you could be consuming. A simple rule of thumb: If salt is listed in the first five ingredients, the item is probably too high in sodium. A Thursday, Feb. 24 Zoom presentation will teach attendees all about heart wellness. The program begins at 6 p.m. RSVP to kglendon@chesprocott.org.

CIAC looking to end mask requirements By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
CHESHIRE — The masks may be coming off all high school athletes by the end of the month. On Monday, Governor Ned Lamont recommended that the statewide mask mandate for students end on Feb. 28, which would leave it up to local school districts to make their own decisions on mask requirements. Also on Monday, CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini sent a letter to the Connecticut Department of Heath asking if mask requirements could be lifted for athletes. This happened just prior to the governor’s announcement. “I think it’s all positive news,” Lungarini said Tuesday. “It shows we are trending in the right direction. It’s encouraging that we are able to think about and plan activities that more resemble what kids remember as a normal experience. “We did reach out to the DPH prior to the governor’s announcement, just reviewing where we were in terms of transmission in interscholastic practices and games,” Lungarini added. “We’ve maintained contact with the DPH and we encouraged them to evaluate the necessity for masks for athletes.” For the second straight winter, the CIAC is requiring athletes to wear masks while competing in basketball, hockey and indoor track running events. Masks are not required during actual competition
for swimmers, wrestlers, gymnasts and indoor track throwers and jumpers, but must be worn at all other times on the sidelines or on the pool deck. Lungarini said it’s too soon to say what the next step for the CIAC will be. “The (governor’s) announcement was just made yesterday,” Lungarini said. “I think it would be fair to give the schools, principals and community a chance before making any decisions. We feel we can play safe without masks and we will continue to have these conversations.” Lungarini said the CIAC, DPH and state officials have had a working relationship throughout the pandemic. “State leadership has done a good job keeping schools in session and athletics going, even as we went through that uptick," Lungarini said. “We were able to maintain learning interscholastic play. We engage with 30,000 kids a season and it shows the work that has been put in and how safe we play, even when faced with adversity we continue to give kids a good experience.” Since vaccines became available last summer for kids age 12 to 17, the CIAC has recommended vaccinations as the best way for teams and athletes to stay in the game.
Obituaries Richard “Rick” F. Scheyd BERLIN- Richard “Rick” Francis Scheyd of Berlin, CT, passed away at the age of 63 on February 1, 2022 after a long, hardfought battle with cancer. He passed peacefully while surrounded by his family at The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain, CT. Rick was born on October 16, 1958 in New Britain, CT, to the late Eleanor (Schussler) Schumann and Joseph F. Scheyd of Berlin, CT. Rick attended Berlin High School where he met the love of his life Amanda “Mandy” Jorsey and graduated in 1977. He began his career at Earl H. Wicklund, Inc., where he became a skilled carpenter, a craft sought by many, until his retirement in 2019. Rick’s greatest pride was in the successes of his children, Michael and Alyssa, always sharing their many accomplishments with his community of friends. Rick was a member of the Italian Political Independent Club of Berlin where he enjoyed bocce, golf and cards leagues, especially with his lifelong partner-in-crime and older brother, Ron. Rick lived to be at the family lake house in Holland, MA, where he spent many days with close friends and family. He also had a passion for both horse racing and auto racing, visiting many tracks throughout the country. Rick’s favorite annual
trip was to Saratoga with Mandy, his life-long best friend Vincent Pagano, and his wife Gail. Rick followed NASCAR all of his life, but took a special interest in Ryan Preece’s racing career. Rick is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Mandy, son Michael and his wife Olivia, daughter Alyssa and her fiancé Jack Ayers, and the beloved family dog, Sage. Rick leaves behind his brothers, Ronald and wife Kristine Scheyd, Joe and wife Sally Scheyd, all of Berlin, and his sister-in-law Susan Scheyd of Newington, CT. He is also survived by Rita Scheyd of Berlin, his parents-in-law David and Lorraine Jorsey of East Berlin, along with many brothers and sisters-inlaw, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rick is preceded in death by his mother Eleanor and her husband Roger Schumann, his father Joseph F. Scheyd, and his brother Gary Scheyd.
Rick’s family is eternally grateful for the many acts of kindness and support shown by family and friends during his journey. Rick’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to the medical teams at Dana Farber Cancer Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Penn Medicine’s Roberts Proton Therapy Center, and Hartford HealthCare / The Hospital of Central Connecticut, for their wonderful care. Calling hours were held on Tuesday, February 8th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a small reading at the EricksonHansen Funeral Home of Berlin/Porters, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Berlin, CT 06037. Please share a memory of Rick with the family in the online guest book @ www. e r icksonha nse nbe r lin. com In lieu of flowers, Rick’s family asks that donations be made to the J. Fletcher Lab Fund at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, to support Dr. Jonathan Fletcher’s Sarcoma research. Memorial gifts can be made online at www.bwhgiving.org or checks can be made payable to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, with “in memory of Rick Scheyd” in the memo line, and sent to: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., 3rd Floor, Boston, MA 02116.
