EMOTIONAL SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE
Nutrition, wellness business cuts the ribbon
The 2021-2022 season was a trying one for the Berlin High School boys basketballl team. Beloved coach Mike Veneziano succumbed to cancer on Dec. 15 at the age of 53, and was replaced by Stan Glowiak. “Mike was here right until the end,” Glowiak stated back in January. “What a fighter. He battled. He was here right until that first scrimmage (this season). He sat, and picked the starters. He was doing the subs, I was doing the coaching on the floor. So he was with the kids right until the end.” While the Redcoats could be forgiven for floundering this winter, that didn’t happen at all. See story on page 2.

DECA
Redcoats quarters for the first time since 2013. A tough man-toman defense was the key to the Redcoats’ success. Berlin overcame some tough times this winter. Longtime coach Mike Veneziano passed away in December, and due to COVID, the Redcoats were down seven varsity players for a long stretch. But someone new always stepped up to lead the team. BHS coach Stan Glowiak said, “With all the guards returning, the majority of the scoring and three starters, Berlin’s basketball future is bright. The freshman and JV programs had winning seasons as well.” Glowiak said it was an honor to stand in for Venenziano. While Glowiak put his twist on the program, he said “it was still Coach V’s team.”
Coach V very proud,” said Glowiak, who was assisted by Darren Ayotte and Kevin Stritch. Senior captain Ryan Stec had a break-out year, averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Zach Skinner played a key role on defense. Skinner matched up with BHS opponents’ best player, and also led the team in steals. Another junior, Marino Fanelli, averaged double figures, led the team in threepoint shooting and took 11 charges. Toby Lavender, a sophomore, had a solid year running the point. He led the team in assists, and against Kolbe, netted a team-high 10 points. Meanwhile, senior captain Mike Ciarcia manufactured several double figure games down the stretch.

of finance. This was followed by a team challenge, where students were given a case study to review. They then presented their findings to a judge.
Junior Kyle Pinto played a key role in Berlin’s early successes before suffering an injury midway through the season, promising sophomore River Eberhardt earned some starts and delivered a scoring punch when needed, and sophomore Jonathan Morales played a key role in Berlin’s defensive efforts.
Berlin’s Olivia Salina and Alyssa O’Leary took first place for team-decision making, and the BHS duo of Gianmichael DiDomenico and Garrett Fallon earned second-place recognition. Berlin’s Derek Heckler had a fifth-place finish at the conference.
Rounding out the Redcoat roster were seniors Kyle Hyde, Tanner Sparks and captain Jacob Ferland, freshman Kyle Melville and junior Terrence Dornfried.
First- and second-place finishers are eligible to attend the International Career Development Conference April 23 to 26 in Atlanta. Theodore Jones and Robert Parisi are Berlin’s DECA advisors. “We are pleased with the performance, and proud of our students,” said Jones. A program dating back 75 years, DECA has impacted the lives of more than 10 million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals. Berlin’s DECA program was launched seven years ago. • Full Service & Repairs, Diagnostics & Accessories • 12 Month/12K Mile Warranty • CT State Emissions Testing & Repair

Great places for a bagel or breakfast sandwich By Lindsay Pytel Special to the Record-Journal
Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you might as well enjoy it to the fullest.
There is a sense of community when walking into the little shop, where the person in front of you probably has a “usual” order and the person behind the counter already knows it.
Katz’s Deli in Woodbridge Looking for a New York style egg and cheese? Look no further than Katz’s Deli in See Breakfast, A17
These are some of the best breakfast sandwiches and bagels in the area that you need to try.
Shef ’s Bagels in Cheshire Nothing screams breakfast more than an old-fashioned hand-rolled bagel, and at Shef ’s in Cheshire, that is what you get every time. Classic choices like poppy, sesame and plain are the simple yet delicious way to start your morning. A.M. Bagel in Derby has interesting bagel flavors each week. A Pickle Bagel is shown here. Lindsay Pytel, Special to the Record-Journal
The homemade cream cheese is light and airy on the fluffy fresh-out-of-theoven bagel.
