Town unveils design for new community/senior center By Nadya Korytnikova The Citizen
A conceptual design for a new town Community and Senior Center across from the high school has been completed and public forums on the initiative will be scheduled, according to town documents. The new facility will offer meals and services to senior citizens, as well as public recreation space for residents of all ages. The two-story building will be approximately 70,000 square feet. Four potential sites — Patterson Way, Berlin Turnpike, Kensington Road, and Spruce Brook Road — were examined for viability. The Patterson Way property was
determined to have the most favorable conditions. The town has partnered with QA+M Architecture on the project. A formal project cost has yet to be determined via professional cost estimating. However, it is approximated to be at $25 to $30 million, according to the project website. According to the official site evaluation, each side of the building will have an abundance of sunlight exposure. The center will be located directly across the street from Berlin High School, which will allow for intergenerational programming, with access to Farmington Avenue to the rear.
