Following storm, Class of 2023 sets sail
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
Thanks to a rain storm passing through, they had to wait a bit longer than expected to receive their diplomas, but eventually, the 232 members of the Berlin High School Class of 2023 were able to toss their caps into the air together at Sage Park on Friday, June 9.
Class president Kailee DeMaio told her fellow graduates that after 523 days at BHS – many of those spent learning
via Zoom due to COVID-19 – commencement was the event they had been working towards.
“Each and every one of us has been put under similar conditions throughout our years of high school,” DeMaio said, “while we also faced personal, unique challenges; whether they were individually, socially, mentally or academically.”
DeMaio recalled freshman year, back before the pandemic. “We began to have the full high school experience,
enjoying football games, Homecoming, Spirit Week, band performances, and everything else,” she said. “Then, all of a sudden, this changed, and our socalled ‘perfect’ high school experience turned into having class on Zoom, where we prayed that our teachers wouldn’t make us turn on our cameras. ”
DeMaio indicated that it didn’t take long before students could identify their classmates by bedroom decor or ceiling fans. After a break in the action due to rain, commencement exercises carried on. See Graduates, A2

In his commencement speech, class valedictorian Michael Lanteri said, “I can stand up here and lie that I’m overjoyed to share excessively personal anecdotes, give unsolicited advice for which I have no credentials for, and joke about our class experiences in a monotone voice.”
Instead, Lanteri focused his speech on the concept of doubt. “The kind of doubt when we lie in bed thinking about the time we got cut from tryouts. The kind of doubt when we shout the wrong answer in confidence. The kind of doubt we have today, wondering if our grad caps look right or if we’re ready to take on life beyond high school,” he said.
Lanteri said doubt can become exhausting, and advised his classmates to not let it consume them.

Meriden man charged with drag racing on Rt. 9 in Berlin
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
A Meriden man faces charges after authorities say he was seen drag racing in a stolen car in Berlin. The arrest occurred amid law enforcement efforts to crack down on “street takeovers,” which police say often involve illegal racing, but have also led to numerous other crimes.
After extensive intelligencegathering efforts, state police say that on Sunday, June 4, at around 11:30 p.m., a white Honda Civic with no license plate was seen racing on Route 9 in Berlin with an apparent “drag chute” attached to the rear of the vehicle.
Troopers later observed the Honda Civic being loaded onto a flatbed trailer pulled
by a Ford F-350 pickup truck, and a traffic stop was initiated.
State police said the Honda Civic was stolen out of Danbury, and the trailer plate was misused. The operator of the Ford was allegedly transporting the Honda to another racing location.
Flor Hiram Santiago, 43, of Meriden, was charged with
racing, reckless driving, reckless endangerment in the second degree, larceny in the first degree, failure to renew registration, misuse of plates, theft of plates, operating without insurance, operating under suspension, and improper parking.
Santiago was held on a $500,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court. He was also wanted by East Haven police on a first-degree larceny charge.

Veach votes yes on budget
State Rep. Donna Veach voted in favor of the state’s $51.1 billion biennium budget.
Veach and her Republican colleagues championed the $800 million in tax relief over the biennium last spring.
"While the budget wasn't perfect, it did in fact have many initiatives, namely the extensive tax cuts, brought forth by my colleagues, that were included," Veach said in a press release. “A more balanced budget comes from working on both sides of the aisle to compromise for the betterment of all of Connecticut's residents, and this budget, while not perfect, does just that."
Quilt of Valor presentation
CT Gold Star Mothers president Helen Keiser-Pedersen awarded local veterans advocates Peter Galgano Jr. and Charles Colaresi with a Quilt of Valor this past Saturday during a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Berlin.
The park is home to the Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, which honors the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military.
