This is a good summer to stay home. Okay, we’re not suggesting you don’t leave your yard, but given the daunting prices at the gas station, it’s a good time to revisit the concepts of a staycation or a daycation. Let’s define “home” as, say, a radius of no more than an hour’s drive from where you live. Let’s look at how to liven up the summer without long stretches of highway getting in the way.

As Fontanez put it, you’ll forget you’re thirty minutes from home in no time. She goes on to describe area shops and restaurants to check out. This is just one example of discovering someplace new in Connecticut to love. Getting to know nearby com-

How many local attractions get overlooked because they’re in our own backyards? Speaking of backyards, we learned during the pandemic that many people were investing more in their homes. New patios, decks, fire pits, pools, rec rooms, gardens and the like provide a good excuse for a staycation for those who prefer not to roam at all. There are other good reasons to consider sampling the local scene in a little more depth. While the pandemic kept us tied to home more than some may have liked — we can’t forget that those circumstances meant the local economy took a big hit, especially for small business. Restaurants, clubs and other entertainment venues were really hurt. Discussing economic recovery efforts earlier this year Gov. Lamont said “the pandemic has created the most challenging environment to own and operate a business

since the Great Depression.” Recovery isn’t going to happen overnight. Shopping local, staying local and leaving our dollars closer to home is one way to help move it along. Money saved at the pump, by not traveling so far, can go towards lobster rolls (yikes, there’s sticker shock this season) and ice cream cones. As to planning your day away, the state offers a wealth of state parks and trails, farmers markets, museums and fun destinations, notably Lake Compounce, but there are several other options. Many towns offer concert series, such as Southington’s Music on the Green, with great local bands that can cap off the night with music. The CT Brewers Guild offers a beer trail of local breweries, a specialty craft that has expanded in recent years. Southington, Wallingford, North Haven, Cheshire and Berlin all have sites on this map, some towns with multiple entries. And of course, the Connecticut Wine Trail invites you to “Taste the Adventure.” Local vineyards include Wallingford’s Gouveia Vineyards among the numerous possibilities, almost all situated in idyllic countryside.

Record-Journal contributor Francesca Fontanez recently revived the daycation idea with an interesting itinerary for folks who live in central Connecticut. The trail she devised — with the final destination the Connecticut shore — began with a stop at Sam’s Place in North Haven. The place “just off the beaten path has some dreamy crepes that everyone should experience at least once.” Then it’s on to the beach community of West Haven, with an inviting two-mile long boardwalk, nautical cuisine and seaside activities.

Pride signs From A3

ordered 100 “Berlin Pride” signs and distributed them throughout town. A social worker with a private practice in Rocky Hill, Morisse-Corsetti said she just wanted to bring joy to her community and make people happy.

Morisse-Coresetti said, to her, Pride Month is about raising awareness, which, ideally, leads to acceptance. “With only 100 small signs, I have seen an outpouring of joy and connection that will hopefully help the queer community and their allies feel welcomed and loved in Berlin,” she said.

The “Berlin Pride” signs – printed by local business Vital Signs – could be seen in people’s yards and elsewhere. “I had people who called me saying that their HOA (homeowner’s association) doesn’t allow signs in their yards, so they wanted to display them at their businesses,” Morisse-Corsetti said. “Their businesses weren’t even in town, but they still wanted to show their Berlin Pride.” Unfortunately, some “Berlin Pride” signs on display were stolen. Police commissioner Melissa Urrunaga said her own sign disappeared. “I did reach out to Chief McNally when I saw on Facebook that others were miss-

ing signs,” Urrunaga said. “I’m unsure exactly how many are missing, but know that mine was also taken.” Urrunaga said she appreciates Morisse-Coresetti’s commitment to equality and social justice. “Each year, she has tried to bring awareness of Pride Month to Berlin, last year requesting a Pride flag be flown in town ... and this year making 100 Pride signs to give out to members of the community,” Urrunaga said. “I appreciate her dedication to creating a safe and inclusive space in our town.” At the Town Council’s June 21 meeting, Mayor Mark Kaczynski signed a procla-

mation recognizing Pride Month in Berlin. The proclamation reads in part: “As a community, Berlin is inclusive and strives for diversity. We welcome all people and believe that everyone should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence, or hatred based on gender identity or sexual orientation.” nzappone@record-journal.com 203-317-2212

Simply put, we love our state! Back in the 2018, I was in New Haven having lunch at a cafe on a warm spring day. As I observed pedestrians walking to and from their destinations through the window, I noticed something. Most of the items of clothing I saw were representing other states. At that point I thought “Wouldn’t it be cool to create an apparel brand dedicated to our home state?” Right at that point, Charter Clothing Company was born! And what better way to represent our state than the Charter Oak Tree (Connecticut’s State Tree) being part of our logo?
