(AP) — Berlin native Ryan Preece won the first NASCAR race at Nashville Superspeedway in a decade by scoring a victory in his first career Truck Series start June 18. Preece got in a truck for the first time to get bonus track time ahead of a June 20 Cup race, the first ever for NASCAR’s top series at the track. Nashville closed after the 2011 season when it couldn’t land a coveted Cup date. Preece passed Grant Enfinger with six laps remaining to become just the fifth driver to win their
Truck Series debut. He celebrated in victory lane with a Gibson guitar, the traditional trophy Nashville awarded its winners during its first run. Preece’s win snapped a two-race winning streak by John Hunter Nemechek, who finished 10th. Preece, Ross Chastain and William Byron all entered the Truck Series race to get an early start on learning the track. The rest of the Cup field wasn’t scheduled to be on track until an afternoon practice on June 19.

In North Haven, a youth/ conservation project was organized by the North Haven Land Trust and Daytime Gardeners of North Haven to increase awareness of invasive plants and to introduce residents to the new Land Trust Nature Trail. Local Girl Scouts and experts pitched in, including master gardener Walt Brockett. He’s orga-

Handouts were shared with the participants so they’d have a reference to take home. During an annual clean up, the Southington Land Conservation Trust put its focus on tackling invasive species cropping up near the pollinator pathway the organization created along the Farmington Canal Trail. “We try to educate people … we try to tell them to stick with native plants,” said Val Guari-
no, president of the land conservation trust. “If they stuck with native plants they’d be safe, so to speak, and not upsetting the environment too much.” At a Cheshire Library presentation, landscape designer Kathy Connolly urged homeowners to buy plants that are native to the region where you live. “More garden centers are getting onboard and stocking native plants. Make sure they are correct for where you live.” During another library talk, Cheshire Pollinator Pathway volunteer Joanna Giddings said tick levels dropped dra-

As moratorium ends, efforts doubled to avoid evictions The end of a statewide moratorium on evictions has local social service and legal providers doubling their efforts to keep tenants in their homes. “We were told when the moratorium ended, it might get ugly,” said Maria Campos-Harlow, executive director of the United Way of Meriden-Wallingford. Harlow and her staff provide referral services to help tenants and landlords to advocacy groups for the homeless, New Opportunities for Greater Meriden, the Spanish Community of Wallingford, Connecticut Legal Services and other organizations. Gov. Ned Lamont on Wednesday, June 30 allowed the state moratorium on evictions to lapse. It was implemented at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide tenants —many who lost jobs or were forced to leave work to care for children — with relief from eviction. But the state also added new provisions that apply pressure on landlords to tap into the more than $400 million in COVID-19 pandemic relief available to cover unpaid rent.

Most seeking relief are from Meriden, others are from Wallingford. Many fell behind on rent after the state’s expanded unemployment assistance dropped from $600 a week to nothing for several months and then resumed at $300 a week, social workers said.
Other recent changes provide legal and mediation services for tenants who find themselves in housing court.

living on about $700 a month in Social Security without a subsidized rent. The pandemic left many fearful they wouldn’t get to a store again and they stocked up on basic needs instead of putting money aside for the eventual back rent. Now that the moratorium ended people are reaching out for help.

Marijuana legalization tops list of new laws
Last month, on the heels of the regular 2021 session, state lawmakers voted in favor of the wide-ranging cannabis legalization legislation. It lays the groundwork for a new, legal cannabis industry in the state and attempts to address racial inequities stemming from the nation’s war on drugs. It’s likely going to take at least a year before an industry is up and running. Other new laws that took effect on July 1 run the gamut, from expanded access to birth certificates for adoptees to the creation of a new 22-member commission that will study any disparate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and begin making policy recommendations to the legislature by Jan. 1.

Here are some highlights of the latest new laws in Connecticut :
Cannabis legalization Beginning July 1, the new law allows individuals age 21 and older to possess or consume up to 1.5 ounces (42.5 grams) of “cannabis plant material” and up to 5 ounces (141.7 grams) in a locked container in a home or in the trunk or locked glove box in the person’s vehicle. There’s a series of fines and other measures for violators, including mandatory referral to youth services bureaus for 2nd-time juvenile offenders. Also beginning July 1, the odor of cannabis or burnt cannabis shall not constitute probable cause or a reasonable suspicion for police to stop and/or search any person or their vehicle. However, officers may test for impairment if there’s reasonable suspicion the driver and/or passenger are under the influence of marijuana.
