Racist fliers litter York Rd.
Street scanning scheduled
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
Citizen report
Racist propaganda was found scattered around York Road properties on Monday, July 4.
From July 14 to 19, residents may encounter a unique vehicle travelling local roads.
“StreetScan employs vehiclemounted sensing technology to assess road conditions in normal traffic flow. The system utilizes its technology to determine the health of each street and to identify road defects including potholes, bumps, and cracking. This data helps the municipality to identify and prioritize repair needs." On the StreetScan website, Todd Rolland, director of Public Works for the Town of Somers, is quoted as saying, “Through StreetScan, we now have a data-based structure to move forward with a road bonding package. The fliers tout Nationalist Social Club 131 and describe the group as a “pro-white, street-oriented fraternity dedicated to raising authentic resistance to the enemies of our people in the New England area.” Mary E. The Berlin Police Department is investigating. Lucien J. Derosier Sr., who lives on York Road, said he deposited the fliers he found in the garbage. “This messed up our whole street,” Derosier said. “People should just leave other people’s neighborhoods alone and should just leave us alone.” Chris Barlow, co-chair of the Berlin Equity Action Team (B.E.A.T.), said the York Road incident is “alarming but not surprising given the current political climate in town.”
Beaudet has been a teacher for seven years, all of them in Berlin.
Barlow said racism runs contrary to Berlin’s abolitionist history. “I am glad to see residents speak out against the propaganda on social media and hope that more people work to root out dangerous views like these,” he said.
“Right when I first interviewed at Griswold, everyone was so welcoming, and it felt like a family there,” said Beaudet, who teaches fifth grade.
Nationalist Social Club 131 fliers also were discovered in Meriden on July 4. In a letter to the Record-Journal, Elaine Donovan, writing on behalf of the Social Justice Com-

Letters to the Editor BOE should be politics-free
cal parties trying to get more power over the school board and its budget.
Editor :
Currently, anyone can run for the Board of Education. All you need to do is obtain a certain number of signatures from registered voters and your name goes on the ballot. There’s no political party influence on who runs and who is elected. This helps keep politics out of the election and from BOE decisions. I feel this is an excellent way to run the education system in Berlin.
I see the town is looking to change our charter related to the nomination of candidates for the Board of Education. In my opinion, this is basically taking our right to vote away. Everyone should remember how the town changed the charter in creating the Board of Finance. Now, the two political parties each nominate the allotted BOF candidates, and they get elected. Our votes do not really count.
I feel this change would limit the candidate pool and bring politics into our education system.

the area up until Chet had the school built where it stands today. It was Chet’s hard work, dedication and efforts that allowed him to secure state funding to build the school. Chet served on the Board of Directors at the school as the Assistant Director of Training, and eventually the Director of Training. He ensured every student that came through that academy
(Fire Company Numbers: 1. East Berlin 2. Kensington 3. Berlin 4. South Kensington)
received the best training that can be offered. He did so by putting his deal-making skills to the test and acquiring training equipment, fire apparatus and a training tower. If you were to visit the classroom at the academy today, you will see a plaque by the door dedicating the room to Chet. Even though the times of active firefighting had come to an end for Chet, the members of the Berlin Fire Department would still see him every week at drill and at monthly meetings. He would share stories of the

different fires he had been to in town throughout his time as a firefighter. As a reminder of this, the upstairs hallway in the firehouse is lined with photos, many black and white. They are a testament to the history and timeline of Chet’s dedication to the Town of Berlin. A black band now covers the Berlin Fire Department patch to remind us of Chet and all he has done for the fire service, the State of Connecticut, and his country. Chet was a leader, mentor, friend, and will be sorely missed.

Ben, a black and white, 1year-old tuxedo, comes from a hoarding situation where 150 cats were found. He’s shy from not being handled a lot, but will probably be a lap cat once he feels secure and loved. Minnie, a grey tabby, was surrendered by her owner. She, too, is on the shy side, but is not aggressive at all. Minnie just wants a quiet, loving home. Visit fobac.org for an adoption form. For more information, email fobacadoptions@gmail.com.

A hands-on experience at Energy in Action exhibit By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
The Energy in Action mobile exhibit set up shop at BerlinPeck Memorial Library on June 23. This traveling, interactive classroom provides a fun way for youngsters to learn about energy, green jobs and much more. The Energy in Action exhibit features a plasma tube, a thermal tunnel and a light wall, and Energy in Action scientists are on hand to facilitate, demonstrate and guide participants. The exhibit was built by the team at Mad Science. “We had a great turnout. Around 70 people participated,” Berlin-Peck Children’s Librarian Jennifer Needham said, pointing out that, last year, Connecticut utility providers Eversource, UI, CNG and SCG issued a Request for Proposal for a mobile learning exhibit that would educate local students and families "in a fun and hands-on way, about energy distribution, energy conservation, and alternative energy sources, to create future energy-conscious generations.” A big crowd showed up for the Energy In Action mobile exhibit at the Berlin-Peck United Illuminating's Larry Rush said, “This exhibit has alMemorial Library. Photo provided by Jennifer Needham ready visited 36 sites since March. We already have exhibits

Beaudet From A1
Berlin's Teacher of the Year aims to create a family-like environment in her classroom. Beaudet’s students know her as an animal-lover (she has a cat and a dog), and as a music-lover, who sometimes sits in with the school jazz band on saxophone.

“They are at such a great age because they aren’t super little and aren’t adults yet,” said Beaudet, who resides in Colchester. “They get things, and still want to be there.” Beaudet is relatively new to Connecticut. She moved to the state from Vermont about nine years ago. Her sister is a University of Connecticut professor.
