DeLorenzo to be inducted into BHS Hall of Fame
Fit Fest set to return Aug. 21
Volume 23, Number 32
By Nadya Korytnikova The Citizen
The Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Aqua Turf. Leading up to the event, The Citizen is highlighting the accomplishments of the Hall of Fame Class of 2021. This week: Max DeLorenzo.
The Divinely Fit Fest is coming to town. Sudor Taino Fitness Group is hosting the event Saturday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Berlin Lions Fairgrounds. Fit Fest attendees can participate in an array of activities, including kickboxing, yoga, Zumba, belly dancing, strength
A member of the BHS Class of 2011, DeLorenzo is the greatest rusher in Berlin High School history. Current and future Redcoats will chase No. 44’s 5,040 career yards.
“I am always excited to give people a fun way to enjoy fitness,” Sudor Taino Fitness Group owner Karla Medina said. See Fit Fest, A6
‘We can do this in a safe manner’
There was no better example of DeLorenzo’s magnificence and might than when Berlin won its first state title in 2009. In that 46-6 Class M triumph over Bethel, DeLorenzo carried the ball 44 times (66 percent of the team’s offensive plays) for 334 yards — both team records — and had three touchdowns.

Letters to the Editor Needs vs. wants
Editor :
Editor :
The Berlin Board of Education appreciates the trust and support shown by the Berlin community throughout the 2020-2021 school year. We recognize that the success of the educational model would not have been possible without parents, students, teachers, custodians, school staff and community members' willingness to continually focus on providing an optimal learning experience for all students.
Post-high school construction and post-COVID crime rate increases means now is the time to revamp, rebuild and expand our police station. Instead, we’re focused on seniors in their prime needing three swimming pools.
Despite the numerous obstacles that existed throughout the year, the Berlin Board of Education remains committed to student and staff safety while maximizing the continuity of instruction for all students. We look forward to the 2021-2022 school year and hope everyone enjoys the rest of summer!

Taylor Tavarozzi, who had been sidelined with an ankle injury, scored on the next play. “He was a senior captain and hadn’t played,” said DeLorenzo. “I wanted him to score his last TD. I learned leadership as a freshman and how important it was to honor the senior class.” A four-time All-State selection, DeLorenzo averaged 8 yards per carry and 120 per game during his career. DeLorenzo also starred in basketball, and was the first Redcoat to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Sure, it would be grand to watch BHS swim teams compete in our town pool. But having safe homes and cars and a more modern police station and adequate records and evidence storage would be even more grand. Shouldn't it be more about needs than wants when planning what is best for our town? Nobody needs a Taj Mahallike community/senior cen-
DeLorenzo would receive a full athletic scholarship to play football at UConn. After redshirting in 2011, he would run for 319 yards in 2012, 349 yards in 2013 and 343 yards in 2014. DeLorenzo earned a degree in communications, and returned home to Berlin. Since 2019, he has served as an offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the Redcoats. Also, in addition to working for Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives Matt Ritter, DeLorenzo is active in area youth football camps and a proud coach of his son, William. Also entering the Hall of Fame this year are Ryan DiPietro (Class of 2002, baseball), Katelyn Zarotney

Getting crime under control will benefit all of Berlin. And to accomplish that, we need more manpower and a bigger, better police facility.

Larson legislation aims to redistribute company stock
Stockholders of a company would get long-term capital gains treatment on stock sales only if the company had a “SHARE Plan” in place; otherwise, they would pay at ordinary income tax rates. Such a plan would require that the company have at least 10 percent of its stock granted over not more than 5 years to at least 80 percent of

“For years we have seen a rise in the wealthy getting richer, while middle- and lower-income Americans are left behind. It’s time for corporations to share the wealth with all of their employees,” said Larson. “The wealth gap is mostly driven by the unequal distribution of stock—the top 10 percent of households hold 88 percent of all stock, while the

“We have anticipated that we would be managing some elements of COVID at least through another year, but we feel we have a lot more information, a lot more data this year from the sports that we were able to play last year, and that we can safely compete,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said last week. “So we were planning for an ontime start for our fall seasons. We are planning full fall seasons and we’re planning fall state championships as well. We’ll get started as early as Aug. 12,
This, of course, is a far cry from last summer, when so much was unknown about COVID-19 and vaccines were months away.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are advising people, even if they are vaccinated, to again wear masks indoors. That said, the CIAC remains on course to start the fall season on time and, with safety protocols again in place, to run it in full, complete with state championships. The CIAC was not caught by surprise by the changing COVID metrics. Nor, with the lessons learned from

birds throughout the country. The condition appears to primarily affect songbirds, including grackles, blue jays, European starlings and American robins, according to DEEP. Hummingbirds may also be affected and feeders for them should be taken down as well. The recommendation to take down bird feeders is out of a concern that the illness could be contagious and birds congregating at feeders and bird baths could act as places where it spreads.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Connecticut go back above 200 HARTFORD (AP) — Connecticut health officials reported Monday the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state has risen above 200 for the first time since early May. Metrics released by Gov. Ned Lamont’s office showed coronavirus-related hospitalizations rose by 34 patients over the weekend, putting the total at 208. That is the highest number of people reported hospitalized in Connecticut since May 12, when the total was 222. The governor’s office said 1,287 more people tested positive for the virus over the weekend, out of 38,702
tests that were conducted. The total brought the number of coronavirus tests conducted in the state to more than 10 million since the pandemic began, according to the governor’s office. The state’s 359,363 positive COVID-19 tests since March 2020 is equivalent to about 10% of the state’s population. The new figures were released as New Haven became the first municipality in the state to implement a mask mandate for indoor spaces. Lamont last week granted towns and cities the authori-

BERLIN- Peter Frederick Gacek, age 72, husband of Patty Madler Gacek, peacefully passed away at Apple Rehab in Rocky Hill this Sunday, after a courageous battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. Peter was born in Southington, CT, and raised in Berlin, CT, by the late Peter J. And Catherine Gacek. He graduated from BHS in 1967, moving on to UCONN where he found a passion in social justice, organizing peaceful protests and student strikes for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. He went on to receive his master’s in education from Southern University and became an employee by the state of CT for 44 years as a Special Education teacher. Peter’s greatest joy was his family, especially his kids and grandchildren. Peter shared and taught his profound love of music to his family, and all those he encountered, touching the lives of many. He was an avid Yankees fan, church choir singer, lover of his 56 Chevy Bel Air, and one hell of a softball player. Essential gear for a road trip with children By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal
We took our first long road trip with our daughters recently. It took us 9.5 hours to drive to Ohio and 10 hours to drive back.
Raise your hand if you enjoy taking road trips with kids? For me — they are fun but extremely stressful.
I would like to say the trip was uneventful, but during the last hour of our drive, Annabelle vomited all over herself, her toys, and her car seat. Thankfully I had plastic bags ready for our oldest, who gets car sick, as well has cleaning wipes.
There are essentials for a road trip with kids that can make your travel more enjoyable though. It is so important to be prepared for anything — car sickness, potty accidents, hunger, thirst, and boredom.
CROSSWORD ANSWER
SUDOKU ANSWER
If you’re going on a road trip with kids, don’t forget these 10 essentials for any kind of emergency.
1. Grocery store plastic bags I always save our grocery store plastic bags to use for trash or soiled clothes on a family road trip (or plane ride). It is easier to toss a vomit covered shirt into a plastic bag, tie up the top, and place it on the floor until you get home.
2. Wet wipes From dirty hands to juice box spills, it is helpful to have a big container of wet wipes to clean any messes your children may create. I also stock up on Lysol Wipes for the big messes, like vomit, and hand sanitizer for quick disinfecting after a bathroom break at a rest stop.
per. I bought oversized toilet seat covers Annabelle approves of for public restrooms.
4. Insulated water bottles
Bringing along your own water for thirsty travelers will save you money (and time, from stopping). We like a variety of insulated water bot3. Portable toilet seat tles – from the 10 oz. Our Success comes from dedication to quality, freshness & variety! Breakfast cooked to order. Open 7 days for breakfast lunch & dinner.
Another way to save money from overpriced gas station snacks is to bring your own. I buy snacks for road trips in bulk – Goldfish, fig bars (our favorite), popcorn, apple sauce pouches. Whatever your kids like you should bring in the car.
6. First Aid kit Accidents can happen on road trips – from the pesky paper cut to the sister squabble ending in a scratch, it is always important to have Band-Aids and ointment on hand. I have a first aid kit with 121 pieces for any scenario. It’s lightweight and easy to bring along on a road trip.
7. Change of clothes If your children end up covered in food or water, or perhaps you don’t make it to a rest stop in time, it is so important to have a change of clothes easily accessible in the car. I pack a change of clothes in my diaper bag every time I leave the house – underwear, socks, shorts/ pants, a shirt, and a sweatshirt.
8. Pillow and blanket We like to leave for our road See Road trip, A15

trips while the children are still sleeping early in the morning or late at night. My daughters prefer their special pillow and blanket in the car (and at hotels), so we always bring our own.
9. Activities Most kids like to watch a movie on a long road trip – so we obviously bring along a portable DVD player and iPad. However, Annabelle can become car sick more quickly when she is staring at a screen, so I have a backpack filled with activities: stickers, coloring books, colored pencils (less messy), Imagine Ink books, a baby doll, Barbies, etc. One item I haven’t purchased yet is a travel activity tray – with pockets and a flat top. It seems genius for kids in carseats. When you’re driving a long distance with kids in the

“During the summer we try to find things to do outdoors with the kids,” Uriarte said, “We don’t come here every year but we have been here a few times for strawberry and peach picking. We also go to the Apple Barrel.” See Maze, A17

Andrew Olson, of Los Angeles, holds his 3year-old daughter Bridie on his way through the sunflower maze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield.
One of several varieties of sunflowers in the annual sunflower maze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is seen on Aug. 3. This year's maze celebrates 25 years of “Arthur,” an animated television show on CPTV following Arthur Read, an aardvark and his friends and family. Photos by Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

Uriarte’s son Liam Uriarte said the maze was cool and a lot of fun but confusing as the family tried to find their way out. The maze is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 4-12 and free for children ages 3 and under. The maze is open until Aug. 31. John Lyman, owner of the orchard, said last year’s sunflower maze was “decent” but he is optimistic going into this year. “We’re looking forward to a really good year,” Lyman said. “The flowers are looking really good this year. We opened Saturday and so far we’ve had a really good turnout.”
