MOORELAND HILL SCHOOL TO CLOSE
Mooreland Hill School in Berlin announced it will be closing on Aug. 31. The private school had been in operation for nearly 90 years. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen
‘It will be missed greatly’ By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Just shy of its 90th anniversary, Mooreland Hill School will not be reopening its doors this fall. A statement from the private school’s Board of Trustees said the school will close on Aug. 31. “Proof of our success has been the continued acceptance of our graduates to the finest independent secondary schools in our region,” said President of the Board of Trustees Seth Brewer. “However, the demographics of our area and the costly economics of private secondary education have made it increasingly difficult to achieve the level of enrollment necessary to deliver on our mission in a financially responsible manner.”

The school, which taught kindergarten through ninth grade, would have had around 30 students and 12 faculty members this year, which has been steady over recent years, said Marenda Stipzer, a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. “We've been here for almost 90 years. It’s a much-loved, family institution and we’re all very sad to see it closing. It will be missed greatly,” Stipzer said. She said the focus is on getting the school’s students and teachers situated at this time. All deposits and enrollment payments for the upcoming school year will be returned in full to families. Head of School Reed Rathgeber is helping students find placements in other area schools and new teaching opportunities for teachers.
The school was distinguished for its small classes, which allowed faculty to form bonds with each student and provide them with an education that allowed placement in private high schools. “I think it was the small, family atmosphere and the ability to give such a great, well-rounded education,” that set Mooreland apart, Stipzer said. Steve Johnson attended Mooreland from 1956 through 1958. He agreed that the intimate classes created a unique educational environment where teachers could tailor their pedagogy to best match their students. When asked how many students were in his classes, Johnson counted them off by name, more than 60 years later. See School, A15

According to the Town Clerk’s Office and the Town Charter, in the case of such a vacancy the board will appoint a member to fill the seat. That appointee will serve until the next municipal election, when the seat will once again go up for election to

Kids do their part to help cops after motorcyclist flees By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Berlin police got some unexpected aid in their search for a motorcyclist who fled the scene of a crash, with three sketches given to officers by local children. “We haven’t had youth sketch artists before, but we’re thankful because it's gotten a lot of attention,” Berlin Deputy Police Chief Christopher Ciuci said. The incident occurred at
around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 when a motorcycle crashed into a guardrail in the area of 501 Berlin Turnpike. The motorcycle operator ran into the woods and evaded an extensive police search that included the use of police dogs. While officers were searching the area, three children approached and handed them the drawings, Ciuci said. “Witnesses, who were playing in the neighborSee Cops, A10

Letters to the Editor Editor : I was very excited to get the Aug. 8, edition of the paper to see who each party had nominated as candidates for the upcoming election. In reading the article, I was surprised to see the current mayor touting economic development as an accomplishment, using the examples of the new Acura dealership and Forrest Machine. The mayor seemed to imply that it was his administration that brought these businesses to Berlin. I racked my brain to remember if Mr. Kaczynski had been in the meeting with Economic Development Director Chris Edge, Town Manager Denise McNair, John Orsini and myself when we were discussing the vision Mr. Orsini had for the growth of his dealership. Of course, he was not there. He was on the Planning & Zoning Commission.
ing change, which was approved unanimously. The minutes indicate that the only commissioners who spoke regarding this topic were Chairman Bruce Moore and Commissioner Murphy, both in support for Mr. Orsini’s plan. Why didn’t the current mayor speak in favor?
If Mr. Kaczynski is willing to mislead the voters about his accomplishments this early in the election season, what else might he be willing to say to get elected? More importantly, if he had to reach back to economic development done under the last Democratic administration, what has he been doing for the last four years?
Letters Policy Email letters to news@theberlincitizen.com; mail to 500 South Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450 or fax to 203-639-0210. The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month. We do not list names of people, organizations and businesses being thanked. Names of businesses are not allowed. Letters must be signed and names will appear in print. Include a phone number so The Citizen can contact you for verification. Letters must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday to be considered for publication the following Thursday.

Forrest Machine is another example of the hard work done by Chris Edge and Denise McNair well before Mr. Kaczynski became mayor. The construction may have been completed under this administration, but they are not responsible for bringing them to Berlin. That recognition belongs to Mr. Edge.

Police call home surveilliance systems ‘invaluable’
The video helped police track the woman, who was later found safe, Lt. Cheryl Bradley said. This was just one recent instance of residential video systems being used to help police in their everyday work. “It’s invaluable,” Bradley said of the video systems, such as the self-install doorbell camera Ring. “The quality of the newer systems are great. You can get a crystal clear picture, even at night.” Police often use residential cameras to investigate crimes like car break-ins. Even if they can’t immediately identify the suspect, Bradley said, the video allows police to get a physical description and images that can be used to help investigations.

Motorcycle show gives support to veterans By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Revving their engines as they passed beneath a massive U.S. flag hanging from a fire engine, motorcycles filed into the American Legion on a recent Sunday for a bike show fundraiser for veterans. The show, held Aug. 11, was a joint effort between the American Legion and the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company. Firefighter Joe LaVallee said there’s a lot of riders in their company and whenever they’re holding events on behalf of veterans they can count on the motorcycling community to show support. He estimated a majority of the bikers who came to the event were veterans themselves.

“Veterans don’t get enough,” he said. “Anything we can do to help a veteran.” All the money raised by the event through donations and entry fees for bikers was split between the American Legion, which provides programs for local children and veterans, and the fire company, which donated its share to the Berlin Veterans Commission. Through an assortment of fundraisers last year, the fire company donated over $11,000 to the commission, said Chairperson Charles Colaresi.

for school meals and the school will not send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility.
Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Income Eligibility Guidelines (lEGs) for family size and income criteria for determining eligibility.
Under the provisions of the policy for determining eligibility for free and reducedprice meals, the Determining Official, Wendy Weed, 860-828-6581, ext. 5008, will review applications and determine eligibility.
Applications are available on the district website, berlinschools.org, and at district school offices and the Berlin Board of Education Central Office.
If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the determining official, they may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis.
Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. For up to 30 operating days into the new school year, eligibility from the previous year will continue within the same local educational agency (LEA).
If a parent wishes to make a formal appeal, a request either orally or in writing, may be made to Brian Benigni, Superintendent of Schools, Berlin Public Schools, 238 Kensington Road, Berlin, 860-828-6581, for a hearing to appeal the decision.
When the carry-over period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children must pay full price
Questions regarding the application process may be directed to the determining official, Wendy Weed, 860-8286581, ext. 5008.

no candidates came forward to go after his seat. He said he did not run again in order to allow new members to join. Should nobody seek an appointment to the board in November, Fisher said he might return.
The school placed an emphasis on students being cognizant of their interactions with those around them and the Socratic method of teaching, where students were prompted to question their reasoning rather than just being given information, Johnson said. “Those experiences probably would not have been replicated if I had not gone to Mooreland,” he said. “I was lucky. Tencza expects that the BOE will begin soliciting applications for prospective nominees at its first meeting after the November election. Those interested will be interviewed by the board and
will require approval from a majority of the board’s eight members. Tencza said it’s not unusual to have board members be appointed. Current members Adam Salina and Traci Sisti were both appointed before being elected last year. However, Tencza could not think of a case when a vacancy was created due to a lack of candidates ahead of an election.
Getting onto the ballot can be a challenge, Tencza said, with the charter requiring that candidates submit a petition signed by 1 percent of registered voters. “The process to get on the ballot can be tedious, to go out and collect signatures … to do that during the summer months can be tedious,” he said. dleithyessian@ record-journal.com 203-317-2317
