Beloved educator, coach joining Hall The Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Aqua Turf. Leading up to the event, The Citizen is highlighting the accomplishments of the Hall of Fame Class of 2021. This week: Cliff Landry. Landry was a proud contributor to Berlin High School on and off the athletic field. He was the first person whom Al Pelligrinelli – the winningest football coach in BHS history – cited in an interview with The Hartford Courant about the line of quality Berlin coaches

he attempted to follow. Landry coached football at BHS from 1954-60; the crowning point of that stretch being the 1955 season, when Berlin (6-0-1) was the only undefeated Class C team in Connecticut.

Police are taking extra effort to reduce traffic accidents at the busy Berlin Turnpike and Deming Road intersection. Each day, about 50,000 vehicles travel through the crossing, making it one of the busiest in town.

Landry came to BHS via East Hartford, where he competed in football, track and wrestling. After attending Cushing Academy, Landry graduated from Springfield College with a degree in physical education and a minor in biology and chemistry. See Landry, A3

opportunity to bring families from the Willard community and Berlin together.” The Sunday, Sept. 26 event was organized by the Willard Parent Teacher Organization, and funds raised will be used by the PTO for programs and activities, including the fifth-grade class graduation party.

Welcoming New Patients!

The 5K starts and ends at the elementary school, and begins at 1.30 p.m. Awards will be presented to the top male and female runners for each grade level (kindergarten to eighth grade), and the top male and female runners in six age categories (14 to 60-plus). The Berlin PD said common infractions seen at the Berlin Turnpike-Deming Road intersection include red light violations, improper lane use, driving too close to another vehicle, and speeding. On social media, people complained that cars frequently run that red light, creating a potentially dangerous situation. “That particular intersection I now avoid completely,” New Britain resident Sarah Jensen stated. “Far too many times I have to wait when I have the right of way because someone is blowing

through the intersection long after their light has turned red.” Several commenters online advocated for stricter enforcement of the speed limit.

Landry He then took a position teaching physical education at Berlin High, where his love of sports brought him to coaching. In addition to his football duties, Landry also served as a junior varsity boys basketball coach at BHS. And in 1956, at age 25, he became the youngest vice principal in the state. He served in that position – and was Dean of Boys – until 1970. “Dad wasn’t about awards or titles,” Cliff Landry’s daughter Nancy Landry Sylvester stated. “His goal was not just to coach athletics. It was to develop young students into successful adults and contributors to a larger community and family.” The BHS Class of 1955 gave this tribute to Landry in its last will writeup in the year-

I often see and hear residents expressing their opinions on a litany of topics and matters that impact or occur within our town everyday.

Each month our Town Council and other boards and commissions meet and there is seldom a citizen in the audience, or anyone addressing our officials about a matter that concerns them or may affect the town.

State says residents can again feed birds HARTFORD (AP) — Environmental officials on Friday lifted an advisory for birdlovers to stop filling their feeders and bird baths to help prevent an affliction that has killed songbirds in the southern and mid-Atlantic states from spreading in Connecticut. The Department of Energy

and Environmental Protection cited “a considerable decrease in dead birds as of mid-August” and the “increasing dispersal of birds” at this time of year in the state. DEEP, which previously reported three birds with the condition were found dead in Connecticut, said the cause has not yet been de-

termined. Both the state agency and the Connecticut Audubon Society urged residents to be vigilant about cleaning feeders and bird baths with soap and water at least once a week and then disinfecting them with a 10 percent bleach solution to prevent potential spread of infectious disease. Feeders and bird baths should be

rinsed well after cleaning and allowed to air-dry. Residents are also urged to remove any spilled feed from underneath their feeders. Reported symptoms of the mystery illness have included eye swelling and crusty discharge, as well as numerous neurological signs such

as head tremors, weakened leg muscles, falling to the side or the inability to stand, and excessive vocalizations. DEEP said the majority of birds reported to have the affliction have been fledgling common grackles, blue jays, European starlings and American robins. Other species of songbirds have also been reported.
