Political signs have been vandalized According to Acting Chief of Police Chris Ciuci, political yard signs have been destroyed in town. “With election day drawing closer citizens have been displaying political signs to

Rivera earned the endorsement of the Democratic Party Rivera at its nomination convention, but Robert Scalise received enough delegate votes to force a primary. The primary took place Tuesday, Sept. 14, and Rivera prevailed, taking 51.3% of the vote to Scalise’s 48.7%.

OPINION

By Steven K. Wilson

Our Police Commission feels strongly that we need both immediate and longer range corrections to this system to make it equitable to all employees. Our police officers deserve a plan that will allow them a reasonable and fair retirement. Our town needs them to have this to improve our retention of experienced officers and to aid our recruiting in this very competitive environment.

Several scenarios have been proposed and discussed. There are, of course, many opinions on how best to accomplish this. What Chairman Eshoo and I are proposing is as follows: — immediately (Jan. 1, 2022) move all “new” 401(k) participants into the original, stronger 401(k). — a mid-2022 implementation of an upgrade to that 401(k) to include stepped increases to the town’s matching percentage for all personnel as they reach 10, 15 and 20 years of service.

“Exteriors are my specialty, and interiors my masterpiece!” CALL TOM TODAY!

This is one of the best ways to reward and recognize them for the service they provide to all of us, around the clock, every day.

We had hoped this project could have been completed a few months ago, but sometimes the system moves slowly. Now we enter the political silly season without this being resolved.

An appeal to both sides on this issue: Please, let’s approve the first phase now and make it effective Jan. 1; and let’s all commit to have the second phase with the step increases in place by mid-2022.

On his Facebook page, Sam Lomaglio — The Democrats’ mayoral candidate — stated he will make sure Berlin receives grant money to build a community/senior center. This is a disingenuous statement. Grants change constantly. At the time of applying there are circumstances taken into consideration such as types of grants available, how much money is available, number of applicants, and qualifications that must be met.

The Berlin Police Department has three disparate retirement plans. First, there is a long-closed legacy pension plan covering our longest tenured staff. Second, there is a reasonably good 401(k) plan that covers the middle strata of our staff. That plan was short-lived however and replaced with an inadequate plan that has covered all new employees for a number of years.

To this end, Commission Chairman Paul Eshoo and I have been participating in a series of meetings over the past year with all stakeholders – the mayor, town manager, finance director, members of the Board of Finance and the Town Council, and the Berlin Police Union.

Woman charged in assault at pizzeria Incident against man in uniform on 9/11 caught on video By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

BERLIN — A Southington woman faces charges in connection with an assault at a local pizza restaurant on Sept. 11. Lori Desjardins, 45, of 1459 Mount Vernon Road, Southington, was arrested Thursday, Sept. 16 and charged with third-degree assault

and second-degree breach of peace. Police responded to Central Pizza, 96 Mill St., around 9:45 p.m. for a report of an assault, Chief Christoper Ciuci said. A woman, identified as Desjardins, assaulted a man wearing a military uniform, according to her arrest warrant. The incident was caught on video by another customer that was with the military member, the warrant said.

In the video Desjardins is seen walking into the restaurant and appears to stare at the serviceman. After a brief verbal exchange where the serviceman asked Desjardins if she was alright, she slapped him with his own hat and used her hand to slap the left side of his face, the warrant said. Desjardins then leaves the restaurant after using several obscenities and calling the man “a disgrace to this country,” the warrant said.

The man said he felt pain on the side of his face for about two hours after the incident and immediately called his command staff about it. Desjardins told police she did not believe the man’s uniform was proper and that he was being sarcastic, the warrant said. Desjardins said her “mental health was not in check and (she) has been suffering from an alcohol relapse,” the warrant stated. Desjardins said she does not

remember hitting the man in uniform. “I am very sorry for my actions and do not believe I was in the right frame of mind,” Desjardins told police. Desjardins was released on $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court today, Thursday, Sept. 23. She was ordered not to have contact with the man. lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSellewRJ

MEET THE CANDIDATES

Keep Berlin moving forward By Mark Kaczynski

As the Mayor of Berlin, I consider it an honor to have volunteered my time and efforts to my hometown during the last six years. I believe the Republican majority and I have led the way to bring meaningful change and progress to the citizens of Berlin. I am running for re-election in November and ask for your continued support to keep moving Berlin forward.

LIST YOUR SERVICE

In Our Business / Service Directory

There is a key aspect of creating an estate plan that you should not gloss over: choosing whom to carry out the wishes outlined in your will, making important decisions on your behalf. Select someone who's trustworthy, organized and able to juggle the job along with other life responsibilities. Here are qualities to look for when choosing the executor of your estate: •  Responsibility — addressing estate matters quickly and communicating effectively with beneficiaries to make hard decisions when necessary. •  Integrity — showing fidelity to your final wishes. •  Diligence — locating and collecting assets you owned and taking physical possession of them if necessary. Executors must secure, insure and appraise assets. They may have to make determinations about the estate's assets — which to retain and which to sell — and how the estate's cash needs will be met. •  Comfort with tax matters — working with tax and legal professionals to prepare and file your final federal and state personal income tax returns, as well as any returns for prior years and gift tax returns if they weren't filed. •  Impartiality — making decisions without favoring one beneficiary over another. •  Availability — settling an estate takes an average of 16 months, so your choice of executor needs to commit time and energy to the tasks involved. •  Financial responsibility — willingness and ability to manage an estate. If you feel that you don't have responsible friends or family members, you can name an attorney, accountant, bank or trust company as executor. Unlike a close friend or family member, these parties usually charge fees for being an executor, which vary from state to state. •  Prudence — your choice of executor needs to have suitable personal finances. People with debts and liens, individuals with no credit history or those who have declared bankruptcy are not good choices since they often can't get bonded, and many courts require executors to take out a bond as a guarantee that they won't skip town with the money from the estate. Also, name at least one younger executor. While you only need to name one executor to make your will valid, you should try to name at least one additional younger, healthy person, known as a successor or contingency executor. This person should be likely to outlive you in case your first choice is not available to serve. You want an executor who can handle hard work without hesitation, maintain their emotional balance, and manage the tempers and egos of beneficiaries. Probate is hard for everyone involved. The executor's role is to dispose of the estate with patience and expertise and to communicate with the beneficiaries throughout the probate process.

WEST HARTFORDPatricia Ann Peters passed away on September 15, 2021, following a battle with cancer. She was born to Nellie and Harold Munson in Meriden on May 21, 1936. She grew up on the family dairy farm in Kensington with her two brothers and sister and graduated from Berlin High School in 1955. Following high school, she attended the New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing, where she met many life-long friends. She graduated in 1958 as a Registered Nurse and began working at New Britain General. She continued her nursing career at Grove Hill Clinic, working for several doctors until she retired. Patricia was married to Robert J. Peters in September 1959. Pat and Bob settled on Percival Avenue in Kensington where they remained until this summer, when they moved to West Hartford. They welcomed two children, Beverly and Brian. Pat was involved in many community organizations over the years. She supported her husband Bob throughout his career, particularly during his mayoral and state representative terms. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for many years and more recently St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church where she found friendship and fellowship. Pat and Bob enjoyed travel and took many trips throughout the US and Europe. For several years after retirement they spent time in Myrtle Beach for

the month of February. She particularly enjoyed several trips they took as a family with their children and grandchildren. Pat and Bob built a vacation home on Cape Cod where for many years they loved to host family and friends. The Cape house was a favorite for family Thanksgiving gatherings as well. Pat loved to get together with her friends and family. She regularly hosted and attended small gatherings and for many years hosted a large holiday party. She was a wonderful cook and kept her husband and family well-fed and healthy for almost 62 years. She loved to bake and enjoyed sharing her delicious cookies, muffins, pies and scones with family and friends. For the past 25 years Pat loved being a Nana to her grandchildren Hannah and Ethan. She enjoyed visiting them in Maine to see them in a school concert or play and hearing about all their adventures in college and beyond. Pat was a life-long knitter, completing countless afghans, socks and hats. She donated many of her

knitted items to her church, the Seaman’s and other organizations. Pat learned quilting in the 1970’s and lovingly spent many hours hand quilting her creations. Gardening was also a favorite pastime, from a large vegetable garden when her children were growing up, to lovely flower gardens in her yard. When inside she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, the Red Sox, UConn Women’s Basketball and the Connecticut Sun. Pat is survived by her husband, Robert Peters of West Hartford, her daughter Beverly Peters of East Berlin and her son Brian Peters and his wife Christine Manderson of Topsham, Maine. She is also survived by her grandchildren Hannah Peters and Ethan Peters and his fiancee Anna Gervais, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Pat was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers Norman Munson and Donald Munson and her sister Joan Tuz and many brothers and sisters-inlaw. She was a wonderful, caring person with a giving spirit and she will be deeply missed by many. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, September 21 from 9:30-10:30 am at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Hwy., Berlin. Funeral Services followed at 11:00 am at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 68 Main St., East Berlin. Burial was at Wilcox Cemetery, in East Berlin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Pat may be made to St. Gabriel’s Church.

A 2019 report from the National Congress of American Indians, which surveyed 35 states with federally recognized tribes, found nearly 90% of states said they had efforts underway to improve the quality and access to Native American curriculum. While a majority said it’s included in their schools, less than half said it was required and specific to tribal nations in their state. “We are seeing a focus on different races and issues,” said Aaron Payment, first vice president of the National Congress of American Indians and chairperson of the 44,000-member Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan.
