State needs leaders, not followers
By Tremell Collins
Choosing between feeding our families and putting gas in the car shouldn’t be a choice Connecticut residents should be making. Unfortunately, due to poor leadership and lack of care, those currently in office allowed these increases to get through and pass on to you.
Being a working father and husband, I didn't get a raise in my pay with the raise in everything else around us. Instead, legisla tors gave themselves a 43 percent pay hike while we were stuck with higher taxes and larger bills.
It’s not right and it’s time for a change. You deserve a leader that will say no and not be afraid of making tough decisions. We need a State Senator that will be available, visi ble and open to having a discussion, work ing across the aisle, and being involved with the community.
I stand for parental rights, 2nd Amendment rights, safe schools, care for our veterans and seniors, and common-sense leadership. As a Fire Commissioner and a volun
teer with the Police Explor ers for over 18 years, I am in full support of our public safety men and women and don't believe in defunding them; we should be putting more emphasis on mental health in our communities.
I have been a lifelong resi dent of New Britain and am currently Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, a Fire Commissioner, and a proud American. Elected to the the City Council in 2015, I helped to pave the way for redevelopment in our downtown, including revitalizing our business district, streetscapes, and investments in New Britain's infrastructure.
I have a long history of service to the people of New Britain and am ready to continue that service as State Senator for the 6th Dis trict, representing my hometown, and also Berlin and Farmington. I am committed to being accessible to all I will represent when elected. I am a proven advocate that under

Educating our kids is a team effort
By Deborah Reed
My parents moved to Berlin to give their daughters a strong, well-rounded education. I was brought up in Berlin, attended schools in town and have wonderful memories of Willard, Hubbard, McGee and BHS.
As I entered fifth grade, the town redistricted and I attended two elementary schools. It was a challenge, but fifth grade at a different school turned out great because of my par ents and amazing teachers. I was involved in many extracurricular activities, mostly music.
My husband and I intention ally moved back to Berlin to raise our children and give them what we believe to be a solid education. My chil dren have had many, many more opportunities than we did because of Berlin par ents and teachers who have dedicated much time and talent to organize, run and grow programs such as Little League, Up beat, Berlin Bears football, Berlin Youth Soc

Twelve years ago my husband and I pur chased our first home together here in town. It was not until we started to talk about expanding our family that I realized we really had the perfect location. We are walking distance to Willard, McGee and Berlin High, and often utilize the black top and playscape. I truly feel like we live in the heart of the town.
When my oldest son started kindergarten last year, I took on many volunteer opportu nities to work in the classroom, school, and throughout the community.
Putting my full-time teaching career on hold to be home with my boys allows me the flexibility to help assist at their schools both during and after school hours.
I became a room parent and helped the teacher instruct small group lessons. And I shared art and science lessons with the whole class.
I joined the Willard PTO, hosted multiple Family Fun nights, volunteered at holiday gatherings, constructed visuals for the book fair and a Rock Our School event and was part of the Willard 5K planning committee.

This school year I am hon ored to have been tasked with organiz ing all the Family Fun nights. My volunteer efforts come out of the pure joy of helping others and doing what I can to make the stu dents’ school year as memo rable as possible.
On the Board of Education, I serve on the Community Engagement committee. Also, I was part of the hiring committee for the new principal at Griswold, helped serve food at the Berlin Upbeat Picnic and attend ed a Connecticut Association of Boards of Education summer conference.
Our schools have so much to offer our stu dents and community. Being on the Board of Education this past year helped me see the ins and outs of education from a differ ent point of view from when I taught middle and high school in Waterbury. I have learned so much about the workings of our school system, and continue to learn.

Community joins textile recycling effort
Press Release
Berlin is pleased to an nounce that we have part nered with AFAB Recycling LLC, a Connecticut-based textile recycling company. Residents are encouraged to drop off their unwanted tex tiles (clothing and shoes) at the Transfer Station,19 Town Farm Lane. The Transfer
Station is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.
AFAB Recycling accepts clean, dry and bagged cloth ing and fashion accessories (gently used, like-new or worn) including dresses, shirts, pants, suits, coats,
gloves, hats, belts, ties, scarves, wallets, purses, backpacks, totes, footwear, bedding, toys, stuffed ani mals and jewelry.
One of the largest clothing collectors in the Northeast, AFAB partners with munic ipalities and organizations across five states to collect unwanted clothing and shoes. Through a combina tion of clothing drives, thrift store partners, and clothing receptacles, AFAB helped divert nearly 4 mil lion pounds of textiles from landfills last year.
According to the EPA, tex tile waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the United States, occupying nearly 5 percent of all landfill space.
The U.S. throws away 36 billion pounds of textiles each year. Of those dis carded textiles, currently only 15 percent is recycled. But 95 percent could be.

On many fronts, Connecticut residents deserve better
By State Rep. Donna Veach
If we are to change the tra jectory of where this state is headed, we need to take a cold, hard look at and be honest about the policies that have continuously held us back. As a result of rising inflation, state coffers have swollen. This increase in state revenue has come at the expense of hard-working
families who have watched as their bottom lines shrink with every fill-up at the gas station, trip to the grocery store, or purchase of any other basic necessity. Re turning some of this surplus (by way of a decrease in the income and sales tax) would provide significant longterm tax relief. Permitting policies such as the Truck Tax to go into effect (set for
Jan. 1) will only continue to add to this burden, as costs will undoubtedly be passed back onto residents.
We must also restore resi dents’ faith in our broken ju dicial system by providing law enforcement officers with the support they need to keep our communities safe. For far too long we’ve prioritized those who com
mit crimes over the victims they’ve impacted. By not holding repeat offenders ac countable, we're providing them with another opportu nity to victimize. Then resi dents are left wondering why cars, catalytic converters and personal property crimes are all on the rise.
The ironic thing is that the same people who campaign for stronger gun laws also champion laws that allow vi olent offenders the opportu nity to be cleared of these of fenses, whether or not they’re remorseful for their crimes. These are the types of policies that continue to erode the safety of our resi dents and leave law enforce ment feeling helpless. We can do better; our residents deserve better.

Now’s the time to turn from progressive path

We’ve seen parental outrage over critical race theory lessons being pushed on students by teachers ob sessed with interfering in the lives of our youth. There has been justified parental out rage over the competitive fairness and safety of girls in high school sports and we’ve witnessed the sometimes
blatant disrespect of parental rights in the morali ty and sexual education be ing taught in schools.
People are angry. Regardless of party affiliation, we all see it and feel it. I want to be part of the change in that temperament and help end that battle, bringing balance to decision-making in Hart ford. Legislators must be re

We need McNair
Editor:
On Nov. 8, voters who live in the 30th district will vote to elect a state representative. We need a vocal advocate. We need bipartisan collabo ration. We need proven leadership. We need Denise McNair!
Denise practiced law for 10 years before becoming tax collector for Berlin. In 2008, she was appointed Town Manager of Berlin, a posi tion she held for nine years. Denise has the heart, train ing, knowledge and skills to understand the issues and how to affect change.
Denise will work with and for you! I encourage you to cast your vote for Denise McNair for State Represen tative, 30th District.
Julie Erickson, Kensington
The responsible choice
Editor:
Lou Arata is the only re sponsible choice for voters in the 83rd District (Berlin, Cheshire, Meriden). Lou is an experienced business owner and entrepreneur. He
knows how difficult it is to get ahead under the Democrats’ climate of overregulation and crushing tax es.
Lou Arata pledges to work toward smaller government. He will eliminate corruption and special interest spend ing in CT. Democrats have given us the second highest tax burden in the country, and have caused the steady decline of our state. We need responsible represen tatives. Lou has worked hard all his life and will continue to work hard for you.
Mary Kathryn LaRose, Kensington
Strong GOP team
Editor:
As the Mayor of Berlin, I confidently endorse Repub lican State Representative
Donna Veach, 30th House District; and candidates Lou Arata, 83rd House District; and Tremell Collins, 6th Senate District.
The above candidates un derstand the serious issues facing the State of Connecti cut. They have all pledged no new taxes and will be fiscally responsible with taxpayer funds. They will support public safety in our communities and bring a common-sense approach to make positive changes in state government.
I urge all voters to join me and vote for the strong Re publican team of candidates on Nov. 8.
Mayor Mark Kaczynski
Her word is bond
Editor:
Donna Veach has shown that she has the ability, de sire and knowledge to con tinue to represent the 30th District as State Representative. I have had the honor of getting to know Donna and her family when we moved to Berlin. She is a woman of her word, and her integrity and morality are beyond reproach.
She has kept her promises to work to better the state by trying to reduce taxes and unnecessary spending while being in the minority party at the capital. She will con tinue to fight for the citizens of Berlin and Southington by remaining fiscally responsi ble.
Let’s send Donna back to Hartford!
Sandra Coppola, Berlin Town Coucilor
Veach cares
Editor:
Representative Donna Veach cares about our safety. As a
member of the Judiciary Committee, she has proven her commitment to keeping our community and our offi cers safe. We see this in how she successfully helped amend the original Police Accountability Bill by elimi nating restrictive language that would have negatively impacted the functionality of our law enforcement. She also works hard for our chil dren. By being on the Edu cation Committee she strives to promote safe, con structive and positive envi ronments for them. Donna is what we want in a repre sentative. Vote Veach!

very wrong with excessive taxation. We’ve seen for years the departure of wealth both individuals and businesses to states that are far more fiscally re sponsible. I’m frequently re minded of the tolls debate where the administrative costs associated with paving one mile of highway here in Connecticut was more than nine times higher than the national average.
What are we doing that is so unique? Perhaps it could be we have had total state con trol by the Democrat Party for 40 years. It’s unhealthy and it’s unbalanced.
However, we the people have allowed this to be the case. This time in our histo ry is unprecedented in its importance. It’s time for people to stand up for our values, institutions, and our way of life the freemarket system before it’s too late to turn around from the progressive path put forth by our present leader ship.
It’s time for the people of Connecticut to demand their government gets its fis cal house in order, as priori ty No. 1, and begin to actual ly lessen the financial bur den for all tax-paying citi zens.
When elected, I will pursue legislation supporting ideas, such as forensic audits of ev ery department, bringing some balance to Hartford and opening up honest, transparent debate on issues where all views are heard and considered. Misguided Democrat-led policy legisla
tion and the inflation it caused has hurt ev ery person living on a fixed income, especially our seniors and the dete riorating middle class.
Personal responsibility and accountability seem to have gotten lost in our present legislative environment.
I believe a smaller govern ment is a stronger govern ment because that means more responsibility and lib erty is given back to the in dividual and not controlled by the State. I will fight to keep local control of zoning and education, where every parent’s rights are actually heard and upheld.
Recently, I signed the “Con tract with Connecticut.” You may read the contract at ContractwithCT.com and see exactly where I stand on the issues. I stand for each individual voice.

Please note the rules of the area as posted at the en trance to the fenced-in area.
Since the leash ordinance was put in place, our Animal Control officers have been patrolling areas in town speaking to many residents, educating them on the new leash ordinance.
All dogs must be on a leash in all other public spaces in town. Animal Control offi cers will be issuing Written Warnings to individuals who do not have their dogs on leashes on public property.

2. Visit a Fall Festival
Our town has been hosting an annual fall festival called Celebrate Walling ford every first weekend of October since 1986 This year I helped organize the twoday event and I cannot wait for my family to enjoy all that we’ve planned There are plenty of fall festivals all over New England just hit search on something in your area.
3. Find the Perfect Pumpkin
Growing up we always went to the pumpkin patch to
pick out the perfect pump kin. Nowadays most farms do all the hard work for you and put the best pumpkins out on display. Either way you pick a pumpkin, it's still a fun fall family activity.
4. Take a Hike
The fall is the perfect time to go hiking in New England The bugs are slowly disap pearing and the weather is ideal for an adventure in the woods. The best part about hiking in Connecticut is get ting to the top of a trail and seeing a colorful view.
5. Do Something Spooky
Wallingford is home to one
of Southern New England’s premiere haunted happen ings: The Trail of Terror. It’s so spooky that I have not walked through it since I

legendary twisty, winding outdoor haunted trail in the woods this is for you.
6. Try to Not Get Lost in a Corn Maze
One of the most popular
things to do during the fall in New England is to walk a corn maze. I can’t recall the last time I got lost in one, but this year I hope to take my girls on an adventure.
Can’t find a corn maze? There are still some sunflow er field mazes standing dur ing the fall, too.
7. Go Leaf Peeping in New England
There are so many incredi ble places to look at leaves around New England some may be right in your own backyard I love to drive around with my daughters and call out the colors we see on the trees throughout the season. It's really amaz ing when we see the same tree show leaves of multiple colors.
These are the top leaf peep ing places in Connecticut: Norfolk, Kent, Mohawk State Forest, Simsbury, Pachaug State Forest, Mystic and Sleeping Giant.
8. Explore Where You Live
There’s nothing more fun than learning more about where you live Take a drive to see the leaves or animals at a local farm. Put on some rain boots and walk along a local river while admiring the geese flying south or the fall foliage.
9. Cook all of the fun fall recipes
One doesn’t have to live in New England to cook up a fun fall recipe. Sweet Potato Turkey Chili, Pumpkin Mac aroni and Cheese, countless soups and stoups the op tions are endless.
10. Start a New Fall Tradition.
There’s no better time than now to start a new fall tradi tion with your loved ones. Whether its homemade piz zas while carving pumpkins, a chili cook-off with friends, or taking a drive to find spooky decorations around town there is so much to do and see during the fall. As temps cool down and days get shorter, take advan tage of the most beautifully transformative season of the year.
