Letters to the Editor Financial stability

Back to basics

Editor :

Editor :

When Mayor Mark Kaczynski took office six years ago, Berlin had huge financial debt, an ignored pension liability and slow economic development. Mayor Mark and his team have managed to considerably reduce debt and the pension liability while the town has had tremendous economic growth. With 84 new businesses or business expansions, $86M in private company investments and the creation of 785 new jobs Berlin’s grand list continues to grow. At the same time, there has been a zero tax increase the last two years with no compromise to education and townwide services. Why change course when things are going well.

Voters do not consider the Board of Education at election time. Last August, a benign BOE meeting transformed into a perfect storm, opening the eyes of many Berlin parents. The injection of “social equity, social justice” into daily studies, has raised the concern over what is being pushed in our schools. I, along with Debbie Reed, Melissa Gibbons, Mary Kathryn LaRose and Gina Nappi, want to change this. On Nov. 2, give us the opportunity to do so.

Sal Bordonaro, Board of Finance

Vote for change Editor : I support Sam Lomaglio and the Berlin Democrats’ first bipartisan slate on Row A. Lomaglio has a plan: help seniors, lower taxes, grow the grand list. There's a lot of pictures of the mayor cutting ribbons, but no measurable tax relief. I’ve seen a list of businesses come to town, but how many left? Pay attention to the real numbers. Look at your tax bill. Businesses provide tax relief to residents. Have your taxes gone down? In six years under this mayor, my taxes went up. This is unacceptable. I am voting for change. I am voting for Sam Lomaglio. Kristin M. Campanelli, Democratic Town Committee chair

Time to return to basics. Our schools are not a Petri dish and our children are not guinea pigs! Rick DeDominicis

Gibbons for BOE Editor : I am writing this letter to support Melissa Gibbons for the Berlin Board of Education. Melissa will bring a fresh outlook as a board member through her teaching and parenting experience. She will focus on making sure students have the best quality education available and build on BOE relationships with parents and the community. In addition, she will strive to promote board accountability and transparency.

town is known. It is important to carefully choose board members who will support and encourage teachers who inspire and change the lives of their students. I have known Debi for over 15 years and can confidently say she is known for her integrity, action and tremendous compassion. Debi’s perfect blend of faith and professionalism will contribute to the vision and passion for student success in the Berlin school system. Anthony deRito

Fresh perspective Editor : I have been a Berlin resident for 13 years. As a mother, I feel that the upcoming BOE election is going to be important to the future of our children. One candidate, Melissa Gibbons, is a mother to two young children. She cares about your family and she cares about our town. Melissa will bring a fresh perspective to the board, with a primary focus on the well-being of our young students. Please consider voting for Melissa Gibbons for the Board of Education on Nov. 2. Donna Rutkowski

In this trying time for education, Berlin needs new members with new voices! Marianne Malliet

Backing Reed Editor : I support Debi Reed in the upcoming school board election. Berlin takes great pride in education and the high standards for which the Executive VP & Publisher — Liz White Notarangelo News Editor — Nick Carroll Assistant News Editor — Olivia Lawrence News reporter — Nadya Korytnikova Senior VP and Editor — Ralph Tomaselli Vice President of Advertising — Jim Mizener

RECYCLE YOUR OLD NEWSPAPERS Please & Thank you.

Politics are Politics!!! Facts are Facts!!! Once again, the Mayor and his team are trying to distort facts! They are trying to criticize my platform, which is 100% ProBerlin. As we all know, when you don’t have a plan, you try to confuse voters, and demonize the opposition’s platform. The question is: what’s the Mayor’s platform? He’s running on the same promises as he did two years ago. So where’s the growth? Photo ops every two years and ribbon cuttings alone are not going to benefit the residents of this community. Don’t let them fool you. Unlike the Mayor, I walked Farmington Avenue and talked with local small business owners. They want a vibrant avenue that encourages walking traffic. The aesthetics haven’t changed a bit in six years. Now the Mayor is touting a privately-owned apartment complex being built is the center of town with incurred tax incentives. Remember other small businesses did not receive these same tax incentives. Let’s get the facts straight. I am not opposed to small local businesses (including hair salons, nail salons, and pizzerias). Approximately 90% of taxes come from homeowners and small businesses. And it’s not their burden to balance the town’s budget. (The other 10% comes from larger businesses, such as Eversource.)

My vision for Farmington Avenue is different than the Mayor’s. I will work with the Department of Transportation and the Governor’s Office to make sure that under the infrastructure plan Berlin gets new (very needed) sidewalks, expand our lighting fixtures, create more bench space for seating, adding flowerbeds for beauty, etc. We can also use the $500,000 business grant plan from the Recovery Act Fund to benefit small local businesses. Please do not believe Mr. Paonessa who says that I cannot use this money for Farmington Ave. He is absolutely wrong. If elected mayor, I want to encourage community activity on Farmington Avenue with summer concerts, craft fairs, and outdoor vendors to name a few. Now the Mayor and his people are saying that I do not understand how grants work and how to move the process forward. The last time I looked, the Senior and Community Centers project has been stagnant for six years. Lastly, I am a registered Republican running on a bipartisan ticket. The Row A slate is, in fact, comprised of fiscal conservatives. We aim to bring fiscal prosperity to Berlin in a post-pandemic society. Whether you are a registered Republican, Democrat, or Independent you can trust us to do the right thing. We all want to do what’s right for Berlin. Ignore the political rhetoric from the opposition. They don’t represent Berlin’s best interests.

Politics are Politics!!! Facts are Facts!!! Sam Lomaglio Chairman of the Board of Finance Candidate for Mayor

Violating Connecticut’s distracted driving laws can be costly. Drivers who are ticketed for this violation can be fined $200 for a first offense, $375 for a second offense and $625 for third and subsequent offenses.

According to the NHTSA, there were 26,004 people killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers between 2012 and 2019. In Connecticut in 2019, more than 6,600 crashes were attributed to distracted driving.

sible job for students.

Serving as a member of the Berlin Board of Education has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences. Though not always easy, I know that I have the opportunity to advocate for our students, schools and community.

A free virtual dementia caregiving series can provide tips and strategies to gain greater insights into caring for a loved one with dementia. Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging will present a webinar the third Monday of the month (Oct. 18), from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Facilitated by Patty O’Brian, CDP, and dementia specialist.

This past year, I had the privilege to serve as Board of Education president. In hindsight, I entered a new role during a very challenging time in education, as we navigated a pandemic. However, dedicating countless hours to serve our community is something I am passionate about. Ensuring a strong educational system will pay dividends for our community now and in the future.

Registration is required; call 1-855-442-4373 or go online to HHCHealth.org/ VirtualClasses.

Lomaglio: It’s time for a change By Sam Lomaglio

In a recent Berlin Citizen commentary, the Mayor, as usual, has taken credit for all of the items the Board of Finance accomplished in the past four years. As board chairman, I’d like to remind citizens how the process works. The Board of Finance prepares the yearly budget and submits it to the council for approval. However, judging by his writeup, the Mayor seems to have forgotten the process, and is neglecting the work of the BOF. This current administration has failed our townspeople. Their track record is poor. They're trying to take credit for work that was accomplished by others. It was the Board of Finance which properly funded our schools, purchased new police cruisers/fire equipment, paid down debt and built a rainy day fund without raising taxes.

Luddy: Continue our economic success in town

As a mayoral candidate my platform is about Berlin Pride. It is about restoring stability, civility and civil decorum in our town and especially in our public meetings. My platform is not about political signs that hold empty promises, rather it's about action. My record as chairman of the Board of Finance speaks for itself. The Mayor is trying to take credit for my work and that of my BOF colleagues. He doesn't seem to understand that the citizens of Berlin go to work every day to provide the best for their families and they entrust their political leaders to provide a safe town to live in, with an affordable, quality education and fiscal responsibility. If elected Mayor, I promise to freeze taxes for qualifying seniors, market our town to bring in businesses that'll help to offset our tax base, support an affordable education, continue to maintain our police/fire personnel,

and provide a $500,000 grant from our $6 million in federal funds to do a facelift on Farmington Avenue to create an attractive center of town. I will obtain state and federal grant money to build an accessible Community/Senior Center and to rebuild our historical meeting house on Worthington Ridge where Berlin residents can enjoy summer concerts and community activities. These are just a few of my ideas for our town. It's time for a change! Let's rekindle Berlin Pride and create a town that all Berlin residents can be proud of. — Sam Lomaglio is the Democratic Party’s candidate for Mayor.

Willard From A16

Thank you to Officer Bobek and the Berlin Police Department for working together to provide traffic coverage and keeping our runners safe along our race route. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers for helping out on race day and to

our wonderful high school volunteers from the Upbeat Program and girls cross country team who brought such positive energy to the event. Thank you to Christine Cugno for volunteering her photography skills so we could capture some fun action shots from the race.

Boudria and Crissy Caliandri – who worked tirelessly for the last four months to pull this event together.

Lastly, I would like to thank my planning team — Tracey Wolski, Erin and Cornel
