BERLIN – CHRISTIAN LANE
Letters to the Editor Vote GOP Editor : As the Mayor of Berlin, I confidently endorse Republican candidates Donna Veach, House 30th District; Lou Arata, House 83rd District; and Senator Gennaro Bizzaro, Senate 6th District. The above candidates understand the serious issues facing the State of Connecticut. They have all pledged no new taxes and will be fiscally responsible with taxpayer funds. They will support public safety in our communities and bring a commonsense approach to make positive changes in state government. I urge all voters to join me and vote for the strong Republican team of candidates on Nov. 3. Mark Kaczynski Mayor of Berlin
The clear choice Editor :
Please don't be fooled. As a member of the Town Council, Ms. Angelico-Stetson has brought forward an anti-gun/2nd Amendment resolution, voted against our No Tolls resolution, and was endorsed in 2019 by "Our Revolution," a Bernie Sanders group that supports sanctuary cities and the New Green Deal, among other radical positions. The only clear choice this election for the 30th House seat is Donna Veach. Brenden Luddy Deputy Mayor of Berlin
Prepared to serve Editor : As a former state representative, it is my pleasure to endorse JoAnn Angelico-Stetson for the 30th Assembly District. JoAnn is prepared to serve the constituents of the 30th District. Her time on the Board of Education and Economic Development Commission, combined with two terms on the Town
Council afford her ample experience in representing her constituents. Her career in law office administration will serve her well in the development of new legislation and the day to day running of the General Assembly. Her Lasagna Project -- providing food to seniors during the pandemic -- has shown her first-hand the depth of problems facing our elderly population.
Hardworking, prepared Having had the experience and privilege of serving with JoAnn Angelico-Stetson on the Berlin Board of Education, I strongly support her as the 30th District State Representative for Berlin and Southington. JoAnn is hardworking, prepared, unfailingly honest and ethical in all her dealings. She listens to all arguments and evidence before coming to a solid, fair conSee Letters, A12

Are your kids with kids prepared for the unexpected?
This can be a delicate conversation. As a grandparent, it’s best if you can maintain a certain level of objectivity and also be supportive of your child’s decision about a guardian. Obviously, this is a very hard decision that will likely bring up a lot of difficult questions that new parents may not feel completely prepared to answer. However, the alternative is having the court appoint a guardian. Better to deal with the issue as a family than leave such an important question to chance.
R208919
One of the most important decisions young parents need to make is who will care for their children in the event that they are no longer able to do so, whether because of a premature death or because they have become incapacitated by either illness or injury.
These include:
FBC19
Choosing a guardian
Your child should not, however, designate another couple as guardians. Unfortunately, there is always the possibility of divorce, which could potentially subject your grandchild to an unwanted custody battle.

Since it may be a while since you traveled this road, here is an overview of the estate planning details young parents should address.
While choosing one guardian may seem difficult enough, the best practice is actually to choose two so that there is a backup option in case the first choice is either unable or unwilling to step in at the time of need.
testament in which they bequeath property and name a guardian for their children.
FBC19
While it’s difficult to even contemplate the unthinkable, it’s imperative that new parents plan for every possibility to ensure that their children are protected, cared for, and financially secure.
The decision needs to be made by both parents after a good deal of discussion and thought.
should also be considered. Does the guardian live close by?
FBC19
It may seem odd to ask young parents to think about estate planning, but starting a family is actually the perfect reason to address some really important questions. After all, becoming a parent isn’t just about choosing names and picking out nursery colors. It’s about being wholly responsible for someone else—a child—for life.
First, and this might be hard for you to hear, it’s not usually advisable for young parents to choose grandparents as guardians. As much as you love your grandchild, it’s typically better if the guardian to be someone closer to the parents’ age.

Water conservation urged From the Berlin Water Control Commission: “Berlin Water Control purchases some of its water from the New Britain Water Department, therefore we are following their conservation notice and requesting that all outside water usage (irrigation, car washing, etc.) be reduced or curtailed until further notice. Additionally, we are urging all customers to shorten showers, run full
loads for clothes washing and dishwashing, and [to turn] off the water while brushing your teeth. Precipitation is well below normal. In general, we are urging all customers to use water wisely, and to practice conservation at this time. Every effort to save water is greatly appreciated.” The Berlin Water Control Commission can be reached at 860-828-7065.

JoAnn Angelico Stetson, a homeowner, single mother and grandmother knows our property tax system is flawed. She knows that now is the time to lower property taxes and that cutting waste and streamlining government services is imperative to providing Connecticut residents with the quality of life we deserve.
Jim McDermott
Voting Veach Editor : There are two choices for State Representative for the 30th District. The Republican candidate is Donna Veach and the Democrat candidate is JoAnn Angelico-Stetson. Donna is a gun owner and has been permitted to carry for 40 years. She is an avid, lifetime hunter; an activity she enjoys with her entire family. The clear choice as to who will uphold the 2nd Amendment and vote to protect the rights of law abiding gun
owners is Donna Veach. She has been endorsed by the NRA and received a PRO 2A rating from the CCDL. My vote is with Veach! Lou Zucchi
Where’s Cathy? Editor : Where in the world is Representative Cathy Abercrombie? Have you ever seen her? What has she done? Do we have any idea? Name one reason why any of us in District 1 (Willard School) or District 4 (Senior Center) should vote for her. Other than ribbon cuttings and photo ops, Abercrombie is MIA in Berlin. Here's a couple things she has done: Raised your taxes, released criminals early and advocated for tolls. Do any of those "votes" put money in your pocket? Make you safer? Lou Arata supports our police, and has given his word: No higher taxes and no tolls. Vote Arata on Nov. 3.
Scott Veley
Pro-police candidate Editor : I’m very pleased that Donna Veach, candidate for State Representative, actively supports our police by opposing portions of the Police Accountability Bill. She submitted testimony against the Police Accountability Draft LCO Bill #3471. You can read her testimony on her Facebook campaign page. It’s great to see that the Berlin and Southington police unions have endorsed Donna, demonstrating their confidence in her support for law enforcement. The Southington union’s endorsement letter stated “Donna Veach will fight for the residents of Southington and Berlin and make Public Safety of the towns a priority.” I support Veach for State Representative. Editor :
JoAnn believes increasing state taxes has not improved how the government works for our families’ quality of life. As State Representative, JoAnn will make certain Connecticut is managed better and provides immediate, much-needed relief to our families. Now more than ever, Berlin and Southington need JoAnn’s strong leadership at the Capitol.

Letters From A12
Reelect Larson Editor : As a former educator, I have always investigated candidates’ accomplishments and beliefs in regards to educating our youth. John Larson was a teacher and his political career started on the Board of Education in East Hartford. Just recently he tried to obtain funding for Head Start programing in the greater Hartford area; all the way up to college-age students. Also, he has taken Education Commissioner Betsy DeVos to task about her trying to deny debt relief to students defrauded by predatory nonprofit colleges. Our country needs a positive voice in Washington. Your vote for John Larson will mean honesty and care for America and continued good progress for our state and district. Tony D’Angelo Southington Democratic Town Committee
She’s ready Editor : During these difficult times, JoAnn Angelico-Stetson is the most qualified person to serve as our State Represen-
tative. Local public service is a huge ask of anyone. Having served on the Berlin Board of Education for numerous terms myself, I understand the commitment it takes to be effective for our families and community. JoAnn already serves the Town of Berlin well and has for the past several years. Her leadership experience is invaluable. As a second term town councilor, former Board of Education member and Economic Development commissioner, she is deeply committed to doing the best for Berlin and Southington. Kathy Moss
Hearty endorsement Editor : The next representative for the 30th House District needs to be committed, experienced, passionate about the causes she supports, and dedicated to serving the needs of the citizens whom she represents. Possessing all of those qualities, JoAnn Angelico-Stetson should be that representative. She is unquestionably the person who should represent us in the 30th District. As we reel from the COVID19 pandemic, she will—in addition to her other responsibilities—make the economy, unemployment, tax relief and healthcare protection her top priorities.
We need JoAnn
JoAnn is a staunch advocate for families, jobs, education, the police, and making our state a business-friendly environment, all vital parts of Connecticut’s successful future. I vote JoAnn!
the experience and intelligence to lead us into the future. While unable to vote for her, I also endorse JoAnn Angelico Stetson, who will bring a broad base of knowledge to the House.
Editor :
Ryan Erickson
Eric Cope
We need a vocal advocate, bipartisan collaboration and proven leadership as State Representative for the 30th District. We need JoAnn Angelico-Stetson. JoAnn’s tenure on the Board of Education and Economic Development Commission, and as a two-term town councilor taught her how government works and how things get done. JoAnn doesn’t follow the dictates of party politics and she’s not afraid of questioning the status quo to move things forward for Berlin and Southington.
Backing Democrats
Supports Abercrombie
Editor :
Editor :
As a Republican, I am proud to endorse Democratic candidates Rick Lopes and Cathy Abercrombie. Both candidates have proven that they are the right choice to represent the citizens of our town. Ms. Abercrombie has represented our district well; we need her to continue the progress she has made in the House. Mr. Lopes has
Those of us fortunate to live in the 83rd District are lucky to have a true leader represent us in Hartford. Cathy Abercrombie combines integrity, intelligence, common sense, compassion, and this vital ability: She listens and cares deeply for all of us. Please vote to re-elect her.
JoAnn is the person for the people, and I give her my heartiest endorsement. Debra Caswell

A plant-based diet has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. What does plant-based mean? It means 2/3 of your meals are mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruits. The remaining 1/3 can be a lean protein like fish or chicken or a plant protein like beans or tofu. Plants contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that boost your immune system by keeping cells healthy. Plant foods reduce inflammation by preventing molecules in your body from being oxidized. When molecules are oxidized, they create free radicals that
damage the body when they break down, causing inflammation. Prolonged inflammation is associated with chronic diseases such as cancer and arthritis.
Flexibility: Plant-based does not mean you have to be completely vegan on your first day; you are learning how to “base” most of your meals around plants.
Transitioning to a plant-based diet
If you would like help transitioning to a plant-based diet, or to discuss any other health goals, call ProNatural Physicians Group at 860-829-0707. ProNatural Physicians Group is located at 120 Webster Square Road in Berlin. For more information, visit pronaturalphysicians.com.
Add foods: By adding servings of fruits and vegetables you will be fuller from the fiber, making less room for other less nutritious food. Reduce processed foods: If you reduce processed foods in your diet, there will be plenty of room for whole foods. Protein: Be mindful of protein at meals in the form of beans, legumes, nuts.

BERLIN (AP) — A Connecticut state trooper dived to safety as an alleged underthe-influence driver struck a cruiser in the shoulder of a highway where police had pulled over a wrong-way driver who was also suspected of being impaired, authorities said. State police received numerous 911 calls shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday about a vehicle being driven northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 9 in the area of Berlin and Cromwell. Troopers were able to stop the vehicle in Berlin without any collisions or injuries, state police said. Several troopers had closed the right lane and shoulder and the emergency lights on
their cruisers were on when a second car drove into the right shoulder and rear-ended an unoccupied cruiser. One of the troopers jumped over a guardrail to avoid being hit and was not injured, state police said. The wrong-way driver, Andrew Duffy, 55, of Cromwell, was charged with driving under the influence and traveling the wrong way on a highway, state police said. The other driver, Jamar Jones, 28, of New Haven, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and motor vehicle violations. It was not clear if Duffy and Jones had lawyers who could respond to the allegations.

WOODS ‘N’ WATER: Play it smart, keep a distance By Mike Roberts
Social distancing has had quite an impact on our great outdoors this year and it will be interesting to see how much it affects the hunting season here in Connecticut and some of the other states, especially those that are big into deer hunting.
ermen have been paying attention to the social distancing edict, and that is a good thing. In some spots here in Connecticut, it looks like some of the restrictions are beginning to ease up just a bit. The Connecticut DEEP recently announced that the Lattins Cove state boat launch on Candlewood Lake will reopen after a brief closure at 50 percent capacity.
The DEEP recommends that boaters maintain a six-foot social distance from non-family members, at the boat launch and on the water.
Where this distancing is not possible, masks should be worn. “Rafting,” which is not conducive to safe social distancing, is strongly discouraged. In my trips to various boat launches and fishing spots, I have seen both safe social distancing and what appears to be an “I don’t care” attitude.
The Meriden Rod & Gun Club has canceled all meetings until it gets the green light from the governor that it will be all right to resume regular indoor meetings. Meriden Rod & Gun Club members will be kept up to date on what is going on through club newsletters and the Internet. The severe drought that we are now experiencing will have some effect on the fall trout stockings, especially in many of the trout streams. However, fishermen can expect to see the fall trout stockings continue in many of our trout ponds, like Black Pond. Some may have already had a fall trout stocking. The DEEP has sent out a notice
Many sportsmen have taken social distancing very seriously and some have even put aside long-awaited fishing and hunting trips due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The DEEP did say that a few stockings have been postponed due to closures of access areas. Also, along with the drought, there may be some additional changes to scheduled stockings due to environmental conditions. As for social distancing while fishing, if the fishing is done from the shore of a body of water, it should not be a problem, even when fishing with a friend. If we as sportsmen follow the guidelines set down by the state regarding COVID-19 we See Roberts, A23

Police investigating after shots fired on Chamberlain Hwy. By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — Police are investigating after finding shell casings on the Chamberlain Highway early Saturday morning. The incident was one of three confirmed reports of gunfire in three days. Police responded to the area of 269 Chamberlain Highway on Saturday around 2:21 a.m., according to police reports. Officers at the scene found eight shell casings, police spokesman Sgt. Darrin McKay said. There were no injuries reported and no reports of property damage, McKay said. Police are investigating the incident. Police responded to two other reports of gunshots over the weekend. The first was on Friday in the area of 48 South Ave. around 5:27 p.m. A man was found with a gunshot wound to his hip, police said. Police also responded to Ceppa Field, 101 Gale Ave. just before 6 p.m. on Sunday for a report of shots fired. A man with a gunshot wound to his arm was at Mid State Medical Center a short time after that incident, police said. lsellew@record-journal.com
