Candidates make their closing pitch to voters Veach: A leader you can count on By State Rep. Donna Veach
Often times you can predict someone's future behavior based on their past actions. My priorities have never wavered: Fighting to reduce the middle-class tax burden, increasing public safety, standing up for parents rights, increasing government transparency, and removing Hartford from local decisions. I have always taken great pride doing exactly what I promised you I'd do – fighting for the issues I said I would. Transparency, honesty, and trust in government are essential to me.
As your state representative, I've worked to make our communities safer while supporting our law enforcement officers by rolling back dangerous policies included within the police accountability bill, introduced and coVeach sponsored legislation to address catalytic converter theft, and introduced multiple bills to address juvenile crime. These efforts have led me to be the candidate endorsed by See Veach, A5
Fazzino: Building bridges By Jack Fazzino
This fall, I've canvassed in one of the reddest parts of Connecticut. It has rambling country roads, gnarled apple trees, and large swatches of open space. To me, it's home. Home is far from work, at least by Connecticut standards. I travel from Berlin to Bridgeport and back almost every day, spending Fazzino about 100 total minutes in my car. One evening, after finishing my commute, I entered a new neighborhood to meet with voters. A married couple answered door number 16. I began the conversation as I usually do, asking them about important local or statewide issues. See Fazzino, A4
McNair: Ready to work for you
Arata: Why I’m running
By Denise McNair
By Lou Arata
One thing that I pride myself on is being an independent thinker. Ask anyone who knows me or has worked with me. I don’t vote according to ideology. To me, good policy is good politics. Voting solely along ideological lines often means missing the mark on key opportunities that can help people, towns, businesses and the state as a whole. I would also suggest that “where we are today” in Connecticut is much better than what the doomsayers might say. Whether we're Democrats, Republicans or unaffiliated, it's important to note CT's progress – progress we all now share and should be
proud of, while being mindful that there's more work to be done. CT is running a surplus of $4 billion. That's not a result of inflation, that's in spite of it. That's not on the backs of workers, that's McNair working together with labor. That's not a burden but a blessing. It means covering future costs such as pension funding, setting the stage for a more prosperous tomorrow.
Some politicians are trying to make this election about anything other than your pocket book. The inflation rate in the United States is hovering over 8 percent-- the highest inflation rate in 40 years. Democrats have “trifecta” control in WashArata ington D.C. and Connecticut. They control the House, Senate and the Executive branch, President and Governor, respectively. Families are struggling and the sad state of our nation, hampered by our dismal financial situation, is because of the Democrat policies they’ve forced on the working people of this country.

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY
Supporting, inspiring young learners By Jaymee Miller
We have over 2,600 diverse students who all require varying levels of support. The Board of Education’s duty is to ensure that the school system operates in the best interest to each and every one of these students. This is done through creating and implementing policy as well as ensuring our Superintendent is communicative, respected by staff, parents and students, and that the structure of the school system is representative of our community needs. I believe in honest and open communication and supporting our students, their families, and our staff. By providing an environ-
ment that represents each learner through compassion, open communication and respect we are better able to have successful students. The caliber of our staff; from our administrators, to our teachers, to our support Miller staff, is exemplary. Berlin has a top-ranked school system where quality educators want to teach. In order to continue to have such a successful and top achieving school, we need to be a school district that staff want to be a part of. Berlin offers programming for both college- and vocationallybound students. This is done through a responsible and transparent budget that supports special education, social emotional learning, and variety in class offerings. Students need to be challenged to be independent thinkers and learners who have adequate resources and opportunities available to allow growth through all levels of their education. I am honored to serve on the Berlin Board of Education and hope to have the opportunity to continue to do so. It is our job as community members to help strengthen, support and inspire our students so that they can move forward confidently into a better future.
Reed for BOE Editor : I am writing to support Deborah Reed as a BOE candidate. She is an extremely kind, caring and compassionate friend and member of our community.
Deborah has a true passion to serve all of our children and to do what is right for them. Her love for Berlin is unwavering. Let’s give Deborah Reed our vote so she can make a true difference on the Board of Education. Shannon Sweitzer

After some polite back-andforth about the economy, education, and our shared roots, they invited me inside and our conversation proceeded. "What party are you?" the man asked. "I'm a Democrat," I replied. Remembering the neighborhood, I half-expected him to
politely ask me to leave. But we continued talking, and I could tell he was genuinely interested in my perspective and platform. He shared with me that he was Republican, but, like many others, cared more about the individual candidate than party affiliation. Then, he shared with me that he was also a lawyer, and we exchanged stories. "Where do you work?" he asked. I laughed, thinking about my nightly
commute. As fate would have it, he also worked in Bridgeport, at a law firm within walking distance of mine. After some more conversation with him and his wife, I wrote my number, thanked them for hosting me, and returned to the street. As I walked away, I jokingly called after him: "Hey, maybe sometime we can carpool and save on gas!"

My neighbor is a good father, who thinks the world of his kids. He's a skilled lawyer, who talks me through complex legal questions. He's a decent man, with a tremendous work ethic. Do we agree on everything? No. But we share the same values, the same love for our community.
So began one of the more unlikely friendships that could arise in our political climate. Over the past two months, we've driven 50 minutes down to work and 50 home. We share stories about our upbringings. We both came from parents who grew businesses from almost nothing. He's given me professional advice. We've had candid conversations about current events and political issues. We share movie recommendations.
For my neighbor and me, we're just one relationship in a complicated midterm political climate. But this friendship gives me hope in the power of direct action and personal connection. All this, from knocking a door, being available, and extending a hand.

CT is currently enjoying a gas tax holiday, one that a few vocal legislators opposed because "it's temporary.” I would suggest the standard for good policy should not be its duration but its need and effectiveness. CT needed a gas tax holiday, and it has been effective in helping families.

We talk about the importance of public safety. CT has experienced a reduction in crime. That's borne out in statistical facts that challenge the doomsayers. Marine corporal to speak at Veterans Day Ceremony This year's Veterans Day Ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 11 and will start at 11 a.m. at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park on Veterans Way (GPS: 51 Lower Lane, Berlin, CT 06037). The Berlin High School Madrigal Singers, directed by Tyler Boyle, will sing the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. Members of the BHS Saxophone Quartet, directed by Christopher Dresko, will perform a Military Service Songs Melody, and two trumpeters will play Taps. There will be a Joint Color Guard by the members of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10732 and American Legion Post 68.
This year’s guest speaker is Corporal Adam Revoir, U.S. Marine Corps. Born to Raymond and Donna Revoir, and raised in Kensington, Corporal Revoir enlisted into the Marine Corps delayed entry program the day of his 17th birthday. Ten days after high school graduation, he arrived at Parris Island, South Carolina and completed recruit training. Following boot camp, he attended the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. After graduation, Revoir was sent to the fleet Marine force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was assigned to 3rd Battalion 8th Marines as an infantry Marine. After a nine-month work up, he was deployed on the 26th

In the event of rain, the Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at VFW Post 10732, 152 Massirio Dr., at 11 a.m. Veterans Day is a national holiday in which we show appreciation to those who have served their country in the armed forces. The holiday dates back to 1919. It was originally called Armistice Day and its date celebrates the German sur-
render that ended the First World War. In 1954, Congress amended the holiday to be known as Veterans Day, to honor all of America's veterans. On the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, we pause to honor America’s veterans and celebrate their contributions to our way of life. Few have given more to our nation than those who have served in our armed forces in peace and in war. We want to ensure veterans know we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they’ve made to keep our country free.

3.5 million residents. Beginning in January 2023 the highway use tax on trucks will go into effect because our Democrat-led state representative trifecta wanted even more tax revenue. If we can’t repeal the truck tax, which I fully support doing, it will raise the cost of food, consumer goods and services even higher. If you live on a fixed income or must adhere to a family budget, you’d better be prepared to do with less – unless we change who we elect to represent us. That is why I’m asking for your vote. I’m running for State Representative because I’m tired of seeing such bitterness and dysfunction at almost every level of our society. Even in our homes, just mentioning politics can be contentious. I’m sickened by being told how I must use the English language and what topics are appropriate. The free flowing of ideas is where solutions are found. I don’t really care where or who has the best ideas, I want to see all ideas shared and debated. That’s where progress thrives – to be able to communicate and listen to each other. BERLINJohn S. Manning, 83, of Kensington, CT, and Shelter Harbor, RI, passed away peacefully with family members on October 21, 2022. He was the devoted husband of Brenda (Argosy) Manning, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. They had met ice skating as teenagers at New Britain’s Walnut Hill Park. Born in Hartford, John grew up in New Britain and attended local schools. After high school, he enlisted in the army and joined the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. For two years he was stationed in Mainz, Germany, proudly serving as a paratrooper. Working in the base’s accounting office, he discovered an interest in finance, and when he returned to Connecticut, he began a banking career at New Britain Bank and Trust Company. John took finance and banking courses at UConn and graduated from the National Trust School at Northwestern University. Over John’s twenty years at New Britain Bank and Trust, he was promoted to Senior Vice President and Head of the Trust Department, where he greatly enjoyed working with his customers and community. In 1980, ready for a new challenge, he took on the role of President of Farmington Valley Savings and Loan in Farmington. This startup bank merged with Connecticut Bank and Trust in 1986, where John continued to serve as Vice President. A new opportunity came in 1987, when he joined a group of investors to start a new institution in New Britain, First City Bank. After years organizing the bank, John opened First City’s
organizations included Director of Bankers Bank Northeast, President of Connecticut Community Bankers Association, and Director of the Herald Publishing Company. After retirement, John’s community involvement continued as President of Shuttle Meadow Country Club, where he and Brenda had been members for decades, and as a member of the Finance Committee of the Shelter Harbor Fire District in Westerly, RI. John was known for his quick wit and was an enthusiastic amateur photographer, long-distance bicyclist, and avid tennis player. John also cherished his weekends and summer vacations in Shelter Harbor with his young family. Later in life he enjoyed golfing at the nearby Weekapaug Golf Club with family and friends. After retiring, he spent more time in RI, where he enjoyed golfing, boating, clamming, fishing, and crabbing with his grandchildren every summer. John is survived by his wife Brenda, son Gregory and his wife Amy, daughter Allyson Jaye and her husband Gary, and his beloved grandchildren Abigail and Olivia Jaye and Anthony and Joseph Manning. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 5, at Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Square, New Britain, CT 06051. Calling hours will be 10:00-11:00AM, followed by the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in John Manning’s memory be made to: The New Britain Museum of American Art, 56 Lexington Street, New Britain, CT, 06052; www.nbmaa. o r g /s u p p o r t- u s?l o x i _

There are four levels of plans offered: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums but the highest out-of-pocket costs. Premium costs increase as you go up the medal ladder, but deductibles are lower.
The best deal for people who qualify for extra savings is a silver plan, said Cynthia Cox, the Kaiser Family Foundation’s director for the Affordable Care Act program. For people in higher income brackets, shop around before selecting a plan. Your subsidies won’t be as big — if you qualify at all — and

the plans will be pricier. If you’re young and healthy and don’t anticipate significant health care needs, the bronze plan remains a reasonable choice, according to Rector. High-deductible “catastrophic plans” are also available to people under age 30.

The signs have sensor technology that triggers lights to flash at drivers who head up the ramp against traffic, according to a Record-Journal story.
An evaluation of the state's 700 entrance and exit ramps found more than 200 were a ”high risk” for wrong-way accidents. Additional measures to further improve safety at these points are in the works, according to the DOT.
At the Southington launch, DOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti called 2022 “the deadliest year in recent memory.” There were 22 wrong way fatalities on the highways, more than in the previous three years combined. He also noted that over 85% of reported wrongway incidents involved im-

While that’s a start, the $20 million the state Bond Commission allocated for the project in July will not cover the cost of putting the new sign system at all 200 highrisk ramps. DOT officials say the current funding provides enough to roll out the system on several ramps, to test effectiveness, before asking the legislature for the money to install the new signage statewide.

Almost immediately, the smart signs showed they were effective. As told by Giulietti in the R-J story, before the public demonstration a driver was caught going up the ramp the wrong way and quickly turned around when the flashing lights came on.

CHURCH CELEBRATES 125 YEARS Following a recent Sunday service, the parishioners of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church had a celebratory brunch to commemorate the 125th anniversary of their faith community in East Berlin. Photos of life and fellowship at St. Gabriel’s were on display, some dating back to the late 1800’s. Today, a beautifully-renovated building continues to serves as a place to gather for worship, reflection and to share the faith that St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church will endure for another 125 years. St. Gabriel’s, located on Main Street in East Berlin, welcomes all to share in its 9 a.m. worship service Sunday mornings.
