The Board of Education met Monday, Oct. 26 to establish goals for the school year. The Finance and Operations Committee proposed improving the budgeting process by, in part, making it more transparent to help residents understand what exactly the committee does, and why. Board member Timothy Oakes said, “The more people will understand the budget, the more support we will get throughout the entire community.”

The Curriculum Committee proposed meeting with English Learner coordinator Jean Borrup to review the growing number of English learners in the district and ways to accommodate their needs. BOE member Kari Sassu suggested meeting with math department representatives as well, to find ways to improve courses and “bolster what is already a strong math curriculum.” “It’s an excellent idea,” stated BOE president Richard Aroian, who emphasized the importance of BOE-school staff discussions. Youngsters get to mask up in a different way By Nadya Korytnikova The Citizen

Trick-or-treating looked different this year, as the pandemic continues, but Berlin did not shy away from taking part in the tradition. On Saturday, Oct. 31 Berlin police welcomed community members to “Trunk-or-Treat” – the first Halloween event organized by the department. Instead of going door-to-door, youngsters went hunting for candy car-to-car on this chilly evening. Following strict social distancing rules, kids looped around the parking lot of McGee Middle School collecting sweets from mask- and glove-wearing volunteers. “We are trying to go above and beyond to make this event safe,” Officer Brandon Lagueux said. At the Board of Education’s Monday, Oct. 26 meeting, BOE president Richard Aroian said “I feel like we know what our long-term goals are and we have short-term objectives to get us to these goals.” Photo by Nadya Korytnikova

BHS earns College Success Award GreatSchools.org, which bills itself as “the nation’s leading nonprofit empowering parents to unlock educational opportunities for their children,” announced 2,158 high schools from 29 states as recipients of its 2020 College Success Award. Berlin High School was among the 52 Connecticut schools to recieve the honor. The College Success Award recognizes public high schools that excel in ensuring students prepare for college, enroll in college, and succeed once they get there. Awardwinning schools graduate students who are academically primed for college-level courses, enroll in two- or

four-year colleges, and persist into their second year.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten the physical and financial health of the nation, award-winning schools are ensuring students graduate with the skills and resources to succeed as postsecondary scholars and productive citizens. College- and careerready graduates are critical to fueling the U.S. economy, as 70 percent of jobs will require a postsecondary degree by 2027. “This year’s award comes at a time when the nation is deeply valuing the perspectives of young people — and the important contributions

they will make to our country’s future,” said Jon Deane, CEO of GreatSchools.org. “We commend these awardwinning schools for prioritizing college readiness, giving their students opportunities to build the bright futures they deserve. The award also underscores the need for more states to make post-secondary school-level data publicly available in order to identify successful schools that prepare students for success in school and in life.”

The school’s campus has allowed students to enjoy outdoor classes on their Parish Green and under their gazebo. Most recently the school installed Wi-Fi outdoors so students can complete some of their assignments online while learning outdoors. The school is pleased to share that each classroom breaks into even smaller groups so they can enjoy participating in art, music, gym, library and Spanish classes. The art and physical education teacher have enjoyed holding classes outdoors as well. Students are successfully adapting to their new desk shields in Grades K-5, and our middle school students are safely able to transition during different academic classes to maintain normalcy in their school routine. Saint Paul’s has added a fourth lunch wave so students can still enjoy lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch tables are spread out and students are placed socially distant at each table. Students can still enjoy purchasing hot lunch from the schools full kitchen. During each lunch wave, classrooms and the school playground are cleaned and disinfected by the school’s cleaning company. Prior to the school reopening in August all student bathrooms were renovated providing touchless toilets, sinks, soap and paper towel dispenses. Students are also enjoying new touchless water bottle fill stations throughout the school. The school community has safely held school masses outdoors on the Parish Green. Students have just ended participating in cross country, holding virtual meets and golf lessons that took place at Timerberlin Golf Club. Saint Paul School is blessed to have recently been awarded the HOPES Grant from the Hartford Archdiocese, which made it possible for the school to purchase four Smart TVs. These have been installed in grade 4, Spanish, middle school math and science classrooms. Additional TV’s for the other classrooms will be purchased in the future. The teachers and students are thrilled to be using the newest state-of-the-art technology! "Returning to St. Paul School after months away has been a seamless transition. Nothing replaces the in-person, student/teacher contact. The relationships they establish each day they are in school is so important. It has provided normalcy during an uncertain time in our world. We are grateful for the benefits of a caring, Catholic education for our daughter. We are also grateful for the efforts of the administration, teachers, Franciscan Friars, and all of the support staff at the school and the work they have done to create a safe, healthy, and educational environment. We appreciate and value the care given to our most precious gifts, our children!" - The Parulski Family, Middle School

Saint Paul School is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 academic year. It has been 10 weeks since Saint Paul School has reopened during the COVID pandemic. The students are back in their classrooms full time, 5 days a week with in person teacher instruction. School families, teachers, administration, and the school nurse have worked together to provide a safe return so the students can enjoy learning in class safely. Students in PK-Grade 8 wear facemasks with breaks throughout the day and desk shields in place for each student in Grades K-5.

Berlin went orange this past week. Neighboring Meriden did as well. According to City Manager Timothy Coon, orange status means municipalities should beef up their communication to residents regarding washing hands, wearing a mask, and watching their distance, or the three W’s. “The only concrete steps the city is anticipating making is prohibiting spectators at sporting events in city facilities,” Coon said in an email.

Smith Scary Scarecrow.

Scarecrow, pumpkin contest A total of 24 scarecrows competed to be Berlin’s best as part of the Parks and Recreation Department's annual scarecrow contest. All scarecrows stayed home this year, decorating the front yards of Berlin homes and businesses. The winners were decided by the public voting online, and the Best Scarecrow title was shared. The 2020 crowing rights go to the Smith family – Kelly, Tom and Lilly – for their Smith Scary Scarecrow; and to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library staff for their Edgar Allan Poemkin creation. The winners received a restaurant gift certificate and a framed photo of their award-winning scarecrow.

Facts to know about Veterans Day Veterans Day is a wellknown American holiday, but there are also a few misconceptions about it — like how it’s spelled or whom exactly it celebrates. To clear some of that up, here are the important facts you should know. Veterans Day does not have an apostrophe. A lot of people think it’s “Veteran’s Day” or “Veterans’ Day,” but they’re wrong. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apostrophe implies. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed. Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day. A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there.

GROW YOUR BUSINESS

For some inexplicable reason, the bill set Veterans Day commemorations for the fourth Monday of October. On Oct. 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of confusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue to recognize the day as they

There are some predators of the BMSB, said Ridge. “A number of native predators of the BMSB (include) assassin bugs, egg parasitoids, spiders, sometimes mice, house centipedes, and feather-legged flies,” she said.

Other countries celebrate it, too, in their own ways. World War I was a multinational effort, so it makes sense that our allies also wanted to celebrate their veterans on Nov. 11. The name of the day and the types of commemorations differ, however.

She also advised closing any other point of entry along the sill and foundation and up on the roof, including under the shingles. “Attics are common refuge sites for these insects because homeowners often pay little attention as far as maintenance and/or activity in this part of a home,” Ridge said. “When a suitable shelter has been found each insect will emit an airborne message as a pheromone alerting other insects in the area.”

Berlin Memorial

Canada and Australia both call Nov. 11 “Remembrance Day.” Canada’s observance is pretty similar to our own, except many of its citizens wear red poppy flowers to honor their war dead. In Australia, the day is more akin to our Memorial Day.

Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy.

Within a few years, it became pretty apparent that most U.S. citizens wanted to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, since it was a matter of historic and patriotic significance. So on Sept. 20, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed another law (Public Law 94-97), which returned the annual observance to its original date starting in 1978.

1279090

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody.

meaning populations are “at or below economically damaging levels on agricultural crops and in residential areas,” according to researchers with Stop the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. The organization, funded by the USDA, is made up of approximately one dozen universities which are working on eradicating BMSB.

1279090

It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I.

But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would honor American veterans of all wars.

From A9

previously had — in November.

1279090

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.

For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I.

Homeowners who want to rid themselves of the bugs without chemicals have to be extremely thorough. It is an involved process. This includes caulking cracks and openings around exterior window frames and soffit cracks, around basement window openings and Bilco doors, Ridge said.
