The driving factors include an increase in global demand during the ongoing economic recovery and a significant drop in U.S. gas supply due to a number of issues including the pandemic and extreme weather in gas-producing states. In November, the average Eversource natural gas residential heating customer could see a 14%, or $30, increase on their total bill as compared to their average monthly winter heating bill in 2020. changes throughout the heating season. The increasing cost of natural gas will also impact the cost of electricity. The cost of electricity changes twice a year in Connecticut for Eversource customers. Eversource filed new cost of electricity rates applicable to customer bills beginning Jan. 1, 2022. Eversource and other utilities do not earn a profit on the cost of electricity in Connecticut and charge customers only what the company pays generators for electricity. The cost of electricity will likely rise beginning on Jan. 1. Eversource wants customers to know it is critically important for them to take action

“With supply constraints, extreme weather and other challenges related to the pandemic driving up natural gas prices across the globe, our customers do have options to better manage their own energy use and to help pay their energy bills,” said Eversource Executive Vice President, Customer Experience and Energy Strategy Penni Conner. “Connecticut's assistance programs are some of the best in the country and we urge customers to take advantage of options like UniteCT and COVID-19 payment plans while those options are still available.” Customers are urged to prepare now for higher-thannormal winter bills by taking advantage of programs like Connecticut’s UniteCT and Eversource’s energy efficiency solutions and payment plan options. Connecticut GOP claims victory, sees momentum for 2022 races By Susan Haigh Associated Press

Connecticut Democrats contends there’s a big difference between winning a seat on a local planning and zoning commission and winning statewide office, which brings out a much larger number of voters.

Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont, who has yet to announce whether he’ll seek a second term, took the GOP wins in stride, downplaying

any possible ramifications for 2022. “Here in the state some towns went blue, some towns went red. A lot of those were very local in terms of what’s going on, town by town,” he told reporters. “I think we’re fine. I think Connecticut feels like they’re in a pretty good See GOP, A9

If you are interested in making changes, be sure you know how much flexibility is available to you. If you currently have coverage with a Medicare Advantage plan and want to consider switching to a different Advantage plan, you have the flexibility to do so. If you want to switch from original Medicare (Parts A and B) and a supplemental plan (Medigap) to Medicare Advantage, you can do that as well. If you want to drop your Medicare Advantage coverage and enroll in original Medicare, you may have a gap that will be more difficult to fill. Moving to another Medigap policy to supplement your original Medicare coverage at this point may require a health assessment to determine eligibility and rates. Such a move would also require a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if you so desire.

It’s the Best Time of the Year to SAVE!

DON’T MISS OUT!

Know what is available to you

Circumstances for you could change in 2022, though some of what you may need is unknowable today. You may suddenly encounter a need for more medical coverage or some form of specialized care. You may already have ideas on specific treatments you plan to pursue in the coming year. If so, make sure you’ve chosen the right kind of coverage to help meet those expenses. If your prescription drug needs may change in the coming year, you’ll want to assess how your current Part D coverage stacks up against other plans as it relates to your specific prescription needs.

sionals who specialize in health insurance or, more specifically, Medicare plans, to guide you. This is a complex topic with a wide range of options for regular and supplemental coverage as well as prescription drug coverage. Check with your key medical providers to make sure a different plan you are considering will still provide coverage for their services.

You have until Dec. 7 to make changes, but it’s best to start now. Give yourself enough time to assess your current coverage and review other options that are available to you. Be sure to list out questions you might have about your existing coverage and any new policies you consider. Don’t be afraid to ask cur-

rent and potential future providers direct questions you may have about the coverage they provide.

Special ed. guide

The Berlin Public Works Department’s curbside leaf collection is underway. Leaves will be picked up during the weeks of Nov. 15 to 19, and Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. Residents wishing to have leaves removed must put them in biodegradable brown paper bags and place them at the curb on their regular trash day. Leaves also may be disposed of at the Transfer Station, 19 Town Farm Lane (off Massirio drive), at specified times.

A booklet that explains special education in Berlin schools is available at the Board of Education offices, and on the district website, berlinschools.org. “A Guide to Special Education Services in Berlin,” written by local school officials, describes how educators identify students with special needs, collaborate with parents and other professionals, and provide for their programming needs.
