MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Control remains in Republican hands By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Berlin Land trust hopes to purchase parcel on Lamentation Mountain By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Hiking a winding trail atop Mount Lamentation, the Berlin Land Trust recently led a group of around two dozen to North Peak, which the organization has signed a contract to purchase and preserve. “You can see to Mount Tom in Massachusetts, you can see down to Sleeping

Giant in Hamden,” said Trust President Dennis Kern, who called the 47acre property an important piece of land. The purchase hinges on the land trust receiving an Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant, which would reimburse 65 percent of the cost of acquiring the property. The state grant assists municipalities, land trusts

and water utilities to buy land for recreational use. The parcel is on the Middletown-Berlin border. According to Middletown property records, the parcel is co-owned by Joyce Tighe and Holly Baldyga. They could not be reached for comment. See Land, A4

Mayor Mark Kaczynski was elected to a third term as mayor in the Nov. 5 municipal election, which saw all of the Republican Party’s candidates deliver victories. “I felt like we were running on a record of what we’ve done for the town. They believed in what we’ve been doing,” Kaczynski said of the 3,134 voters who supported him. In an email statement, Democratic mayoral candidate Karen Pagliaro said, “It is my genuine hope that the Republican majority will govern with transparency, accountability and a strong desire to put partisan politics aside, putting the best interest of the town first.” Pagliaro launched her campaign for mayor after completing her first term on the council and received 2,150 votes. Kaczynski attributed his success to improve the town through economic develop-

“I think we’ve got a lot done. There’s plenty more to do, but you know it’s good to have what we’ve done validated by the voters,” he said. Over the next 2-year session he’d like to complete some of the projects that are ongoing or being considered, such as the creation of a new senior and community center, renovations at the police department and the transitoriented development being planned next to the train station. “That’s why I ran again, I want to see some of those things through to their conclusion,” he said. Republican Town Party Chairperson Sandra Coppola said she believes voters supported the Republican ticket because they’ve seen an effort by the party to imSee Election, A8

Out of the five boards and commissions with elected members, only the Board of Assessment Appeals and Police Commission had competitive races. Since the Town Charter stipulates a maximum number of seats one party can hold, all of the Town Council and Board of Finance candidates were guaranteed election.

Avian expert details little known facts about birds By Joy VanderLek Special to The Citizen

edge of birds,” he said. So if you had a bird you wanted to send out of the country, you went to see Dr. Giddings.

CHESHIRE – Dr. Robert Giddings, who retired from Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital in 2009, recently delighted an audience at the First Congregational Church with a talk on some of the more humorous recollections of his life’s work as an avian veterinarian. Young gardeners Amy Walk, Katie Tierney, Kiera Colello, Aurora Logan, Samantha Hartan and Cassidy Kemp. Group member Abby Valdosi is not pictured.

Productive year for youth group Last year the Kensington Garden Club created a committee to help promote gardening to local youth. Among other activities this past season, under the guidance of Youth Gardening Chair Cyndi Mckinnon, Girl Scout Troop 66148 planted various vegetables and flowers in a Berlin Community Plot sponsored by the club. Together they learned about planting, weeding, tending to the plants and also some things to avoid to be successful.

Pumpkin plants that were started from seed by Mckinnon and club President Paula Archacki were donated to the troop to nurture. The troop was successful in its efforts and won a first and third prize at the Berlin Fair. Other pumpkins were carved out and decorated by the Girl Scouts to create a beautiful centerpiece that was used to decorate the refreshment table at the Oct. 17 club meeting.

To get involved with Kensington Garden Club, contact the group through its website, kensingtongardenclub.net, or its Facebook page. The club’s next fundraiser, a Christmas Boutique, will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the BerlinPeck Memorial Library. -- Press Release

Although Giddings was Connecticut’s first board certified avian specialist, he didn’t come to it directly out of school. Instead he worked with large animals, like dairy cattle. As the federal government oversees food production, Giddings and his fellow classmates took a federal accreditation exam in order to be able to work within federal programs such as vaccinations and the like. He also would be able to sign health certificates for animals going out of the country.

The first big event for Giddings was with 200 white doves for the Ice Capades at the New Haven Coliseum back in the day. After their engagement the doves were going to Montreal, Canada. In order to leave the country, they had to be examined. Who could do that? “The number of possible candidates on that list was immediately reduced to one,” said Giddings, in a deadpan, as the room resounded in laughter. Another entertaining story came from his visit to a client in Farmington who collected exotic waterfowl from the around the world. The collection included two African Crowned Cranes that were being sold to someone in Canada. As Giddings told it, early one morning he drove up to Farmington and was informed that “we had to catch them.”

“For quite awhile, I was the only veterinarian in the state of Connecticut who was federally ac- Fortunately, the credited and who also cranes were in a small had any interest or knowl-

‘LAST MAN STANDING’

This race will run you Ragged By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — The Run Ragged Trail Race tests the human body to its limits and will return again for its second year in 2020. The May 30 event will again be staged by the CT Trailmixers running club at Ragged Mountain, which straddles the Southington and Berlin town line.

Run Ragged is the only “Last Man Standing” event held in Connecticut. Participants run a technical 5K trail loop starting every hour on the hour. They have one hour to complete the 3.1-mile course. The cycle continues until there is one runner left. The 2019 winner was New Jersey’s Scott Snell. He won the event after 31 hours and just under 100 miles.

There are three directors staging the event: Karen Prado of Wethersfield, Brian Roccapriore of Clinton and Stefan Rodriguez of Berlin. The CT Trailmixers, a nonprofit organization, began in 2015. The group holds two races a year at Southington’s Camp Sloper. On Nov. 24, the CT Trailmixers is staging The Fall Fling 400 at Camp Sloper. To register for that See Race, A13

WORKERS HONORED

OPINION

Your tax dollars at rest Hallelujah! The bridge repair is done and the street is back open! Not the Center Street bridge in Wallingford, mind you. That project has been going on almost forever, but the street has been kept open during most of that time. I think President Washington said a few words in front of Vinny’s Deli before the job got underway. Or maybe that was Mayor Dickinson. Either way, if it gets finished on the new projected schedule, the repair/rebuild job will have taken about 770 days, counting a year-long, back-to-the-drawing-board delay because of worries about the stability of the foundations. That’s almost half the time it took to build the Golden Gate Bridge, which opened in 1937 after about 1,600 days of construction, although I’m sure that’s not a fair comparison. There can be all kinds of complications, even on a small job, that we peasants, I mean civilians, wouldn’t understand. On the other hand, we’re talking about an 8,981-foot suspension bridge that soars over the treacherous waters where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, vs. a short span across little old Wharton Brook. But that’s just me.

Senior Bowling Nov. 8 Nick Nesci - 188, Buzz Brazee - 181, Dennis Derose - 169, Gene Lemery - 159.

No, I’m talking about the Burnham Street bridge that spans the mighty Richter Mattabesset River in Berlin, although “river” might be far too grand a word. And, at about 185 days, this project has taken pretty close to half the time it took to build the Empire State Building — 103 stories providing 2.8 million square feet of office space held up by 365,000 tons of steel, which took 410 days to assemble and opened in 1931. Rome wasn’t built in a day, either. Maybe there was less paperwork back then. Meanwhile, work continues on the bridge that takes West Main Street over Sodom Brook in Meriden. It’s an area worth avoiding, since westbound traffic gets squeezed down to one lane there. Maybe that’s why McDonald’s decided to rehab their place at this time. Bridge work started in early July of 2018 and is set to wrap up in June of 2020. Seems like more than enough time, but what do I know? By the way, they had to tear down the former

Bradley Diner before starting this project, which reminds me of a time, years ago, when I stepped into that diner for lunch. There was one guy behind the counter, whom I took to be the owner because he was the only one there. Then I noticed a Polaroid photo pinned up on the wall, labeled “Employee of the Month.” It was the same guy. *** Let’s see, what else can I gripe about? A couple of Sundays ago I was driving west on Church Street in Yalesville (a state highway), well after dark, and lots of workers were doing some major pavement work there. But I couldn’t help wondering what was so urgent that they were doing it on a Sunday night, at what must be the highest overtime rate short of working on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving.

Galgano, Kate Wall and Colaresi.

I’ve never seen so many traffic cones; they were lined up from where Route 68 goes over Route 5, past Route 150, to about where the Corner Café is. The electric sign said the work will go on through Nov. 1.

“I spread out my arms to stop them,” he said. No sooner had the vet made this move, the crane matched him, Giddings said while attempting to recreate the dance for the audience, who were now in hysterics. “For a few seconds we did the African Crowned Crane dominance dance,” said Giddings, chuckling. That changed the whole dynamic, he said. “I spoke their language. So instead of being an enemy, I was one of them. After that they moved very easily into the shed to be examined, and that was that.” Racing pigeons also were among the stories talked about that night. Giddings became acquainted with a man named Don whose business was racing pigeons. “Don” was a known entity both in the U.S. and abroad as the man who knew who was selling and who wanted to buy racing pigeons. “Don taught me about everything I know about pigeon racing,” said Giddings. The sport is very pop-

ular in Europe and Giddings said his hospital is close to a population in New Britain who know the sport. As a result Giddings said he saw his fair share of pigeons. As an example of how races are conducted, Giddings said if a group decided to race 200 birds, every bird has to be identified, and that’s done when they are banded as small one-yearolds. “Baby birds grow incredibly fast,” said Giddings. The band has a lot of information including the club, the owner and bird, the hatch date and more. A timing band is put onto the other leg. On the morning of the race, the birds are loaded into a van and driven 200 miles to the north or the south or the west, wherever the race would start, Giddings said. They are released from the van simultaneously and the birds fly straight up in the air, circle around five times and head for home. “How they know they need to fly south from Burlington,

At the conclusion of his talk, Giddings entertained questions from the audience. Leah Saunders asked about a bird’s intelligence and the term “bird brain.”

To everyone’s amazement, Giddings explained the bird doesn’t just fly back to Connecticut, it flies back to his very own home loft. “Birds are incredible athletes and some of their migratory flights are nothing but mindboggling,” he said.--

It depends on the bird, but corvids, ravens and blue jays are thought to be the most intelligent, Giddings replied. They can count, along with other skills. Roy Pritchard asked about the massive decline in bird populations. He wanted to know why that was.

Giddings then makes reference to a bird called the Alaskan Bar-tailed Godwit.

Among a long list of possibilities, was global warming, Giddings said. “That affects every creature.” he said. PFAS (a group of man-made chemicals used in various industries) and other toxins, are to blame, as was DDT.

A few years ago, a godwit was fitted with a GPS device and his flight was monitored, said Giddings. “Instead of flying down along the coast, he headed out to over the open ocean. He flew non-stop for eight days. During those eight days, he covered 7,150 miles and he finally landed in New Zealand,” said Giddings. “I would not be at all surprised if he landed on exactly the same little beach that he had landed on the year before,”

The latter headed the list as a long-term pesticide that was responsible for the loss of generations of bald eagles, said Giddings, who also counts habitat loss, light pollution and cats for the decline in bird populations.

he said, adding, “This remains the single longest migratory flight of any bird.”

Vermont, or fly east from Syracuse, New York, to get back to Connecticut, I have no idea,” said Giddings, genuinely mystified. “I am sure it is related in some way to the way they navigate in migration and we don’t know that either,” he said.

“The night claims a lot of people going up and down Ragged Mountain with a head lamp on,” Roccapriore said. “Every shadow you see, you think is a bear.” Sixty percent of the athletes were from Connecticut and 40 percent came from out of state. “Connecticut has a tremendous trail running community,” Roccapriore said. “But if runners are interested in joining, join our Facebook group and try out a social run that we have every weekend. Once they get

there, endurance running is not as hard as they think it is.” As far as spectators go, Roccapriore said the Last Man Standing race is one of the group’s better events to watch because of the hourly starts. The winner gets no cash prize, but will receive a custom trophy. ”This is a great chance to see how much endurance someone can have and what the human body is capable of. No one is getting rich doing this,” Roccapriore said. “It’s just for the love of the sport.”
