Voters reject charter changes
Citizen report
On Election Day, Nov. 8, Berlin voters rejected all the amendments put forth re garding Berlin’s Town Char ter.
One modification in particu lar, focused on the Visiting Nurses Association, drew a great deal of attention lead ing up to the vote. With many residents fearing this charter revision would lead to the demise of the VNA, the proposal was defeated, 5,126 to 3,548.
Another proposed charter amendment would have al lowed Board of Education candidates to run as mem bers of a political party.
Currently, the Berlin BOE is a non-partisan body, and residents opted to maintain that structure. The “ no ” votes prevailed 4,242 to 4,089.

Six candidates were running for three spots on the non-partisan board, and
the top vote-getters were newcomer Peter Zarabozo, and current BOE members Jaymee Miller and Melissa Gibbons.
Unofficial results show Zarabozo earning 3,200 votes, the most of any BOE candidate.
“In a climate of increased political polarization, I will do what it takes to not let our Board of Education suc cumb to any political influences and agendas,” Zarabozo stated back in October. “Politics should have no place or any influence on our school

Veach maintains House seat
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
Republican incumbent Don na Veach won the 30th House district race Tuesday night, Nov. 8, over Demo cratic challenger and former Town Manager Denise Mc Nair.
The 30th covers a portion of Southington and most of Berlin.
Unofficial results showed Veach with a 3,376 to 2,777 edge over McNair in Berlin, and a 5,733 to 4,670 lead in Southington.
Veach’s re-election cam paign was based on three core issues: the economy, further support to law en forcement, and education.
“I want to thank each and every one of you for coming out,” Veach told supporters on Election Night. “I can’t thank you all enough, be cause if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be standing up here doing this speech and thanking all of you. It’s all about us, and we’re a fami ly.”

Berlin Democrat Jonathan “Jack” Fazzino won a narrow victory in the race for the 83rd House District seat Tuesday, Nov. 8 against Meriden Republican Lou Arata, ac cording to unofficial results reported to the Secretary of the State’s office.
The tally shows Fazzino won the district by a 114-vote margin, according to the state’s election office. The margin does not qualify for an automatic recount under state law.
The district includes parts of Meriden, Berlin and Cheshire and has been held by retiring Democratic state Rep. Catherine Abercrombie since 2005, when she won in a special election.
According to unofficial results, Fazzino won Meriden 2,486 to Arata’s 2,216, while Arata
won Cheshire 981 to Fazzino’s 975 and Berlin 1,675 to Fazzino’s 1,525. An automat ic recount is triggered when the margin is less than 0.5 percent of the vote total. In this case, the 114-vote margin is 1.156 percent of total votes cast.
Both candidates were reluctant to claim vic tory on Election Day. But after confirming results with town clerks’ offices and count ing absentee ballots and election day regis trations, Fazzino and other Democrats knew late in the evening he had won.
“We had a great feeling of where we were,” Fazzino said. “It was beyond words. We put so much collective effort into the campaign, to have the realization to represent the dis trict I come from is a privilege beyond any thing I can compare.”

Fazzino, a Berlin town coun cilor, praised Arata for run ning a campaign focused on the issues.
“I have nothing but respect for him,” Fazzino said. “We ran a civil, issues-campaign. We showed it doesn’t have to be so contentious.”
Fazzino credits his win to lis tening to voters who are concerned about safety and the economy.
“We need to make an afford able Connecticut for every one, ” Fazzino said. “This comes down to meeting people where they’re at and meeting the difficulties and challenges people are facing. People want someone who is going to fight for them up in Hartford.”
According to election offi cials, vote tallies sent to state election offices included ab sentee ballots and election day registrations.
In Brief
Gun buy back
The Nov. 8 election was Ara ta’s third try at the seat where the margins were less than 300 votes.
Arata said he was having dif ficulty squaring the numbers reported by the towns with the numbers listed on the Secretary of the State’s web site.
“There is a huge margin of difference and voters need to know every single vote is accounted for,” Arata said. “We’re going to be investi gating this. This smells very fishy to me.”
Meriden City Clerk, Denise Grandy, a Republican, said a review of absentee ballots with Democratic and Repub lican moderators did not change the official count.
“They went over everything and the paperwork matched,” Grandy said.
When asked about any dis crepancies between town numbers and the Secretary of the State’s office report ing, a spokesman said the vote totals are entered into the system by town election officials.

It’s Heating Assistance Awareness Month
Press Release
With winter approaching and heating systems being turned on in homes and businesses across the state, Eversource is reminding customers about the many resources available to them. In recogni tion of Heating Assistance Awareness Month in Con necticut, the energy compa ny is partnering with state leaders and the communities it serves to raise awareness about payment plans and as sistance programs available to help keep homes and businesses warm.
“This is a challenging time for our customers as tem peratures drop. We have many ways to help, and cus tomers should absolutely take advantage of them. Most important is that if you meet state income require ments, we will protect your household from service shut off during the coldest months each year,” said Ev ersource Vice President of Customer Operations Jess Cain. “We’re holding free virtual information sessions, and we’ll go over crucial programs that customers should know about includ
ing Connecticut’s Energy As sistance Program and Ever source’s Matching Payment Program and New Start, which can provide lower monthly payments.”
Customers who’ve never needed assistance may not realize they qualify for pro tection from service discon nection and may also be eli gible for other programs to reduce past due bal ances. Eversource is encour aging customers who are
having difficulty paying their energy bills to participate in one of three upcoming noon-time webinars Nov. 17, Dec. 1 or Dec. 8 to learn more about programs available to help.

Local artist earns solo exhibit at Gallery 66
Press Release
Gallery 66 is pleased to present Open and Shut, an art exhibition of abstract art on windows. This is the first solo show of artist Eddie Hall, of Berlin, featuring works he created over the last two years. These works are uniquely created using recycled windows and ex hibit vibrant colors and geometric patterns. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 30 at Gallery 66, 66 Main St., New Britain.
‘Daliance,’ a piece by local artist Eddie Hall.
A self-taught artist, Hall's geometric abstract works draw in spiration from architectural and design themes, and have been featured in shows throughout New England. "If you start looking, you would be surprised how many windows you find discarded by the side of the road," said Hall, a fa ther of two who works full time as an attorney. "I keep find ing myself coming back again and again to the visuals I can achieve with acrylic paints on the reverse side of recycled windows. Using this medium, I find that I can represent the bold colors and geometric patterns I gravitate towards. I find enjoyment in the challenge of working the unique character of each window into the piece itself. These works have al lowed me to take something discarded and transform it into an item of beauty."
