ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING

New Main Street venue draws a crowd By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Main Street became a winter wonderland for a few hours Sunday as the town’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony got underway.

The fire companies that coordinate the festivities opted to move the event to Main Street as a way to support the town’s efforts to revitalize the downtown area. The event “The biggest thing is the had been held at Veterans involvement between the Memorial Park for about businesses and the resithe past three decades.

Ray DeCormier stands on land where he will be constructing an 18-home subdivision along Ice Pond Lane in East Berlin. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

Construction underway on 18-home subdivision Construction is well underway on an 18-home subdivision off Ice Pond Lane in East Berlin. “It's a beautiful wooded area ... All of the houses are on the wooded hillside, so most of them have a beautiful view,” said Jon Demko, a local developer who is partnering with landowner Ray DeCormier on the project.

The main road servicing the neighborhood, Brittany's Path, is under construction. Work is scheduled to begin on the first homes between March and May, DeCormier said. Twelve of the homes will be along Brittany’s Path, named after DeCormier’s daughter. An additional five would branch off Hawk’s Landing, a small cul-de-sac in the middle of the neighborhood.

Both roads, which will be turned over to the town once the last home is completed, will be outfitted with underground utilities, including natural gas.

The homes will be surrounded by a walking path. A homeowners association is expected to maintain the open space, which would be jointly owned by the homeowners.

Glowing at the corner of Main Street and Farmington Avenue, Berlin’s Christmas tree was lit in a ceremony on Saturday. Nov. 30. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

Jim Simons, Berlin’s fire administrator, said this year’s ceremony was the most successful the town has seen in the half dozen years the four volunteer fire companies have organized the gathering. He estimated between 250 and 300 people filled Main Street, which was closed between Farmington Avenue and New Britain Road for the Nov. 30 event.

Tips to maintain Christmas tree quality When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your tree. Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems. Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.

Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water. To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands

should provide one quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.

Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end.

Mayor Mark Kaczynski said he was excited about the location change, which reminded him of the Yankee Peddler Days that used to fill businesses along Main Street during the summer until the event ceased sometime in the 1980s. Being able to host community-building events, he said, is one of the benefits of having a downtown district like what the town is fostering in Kensington Village. See Lighting, A11

Frances R. Smith

From A4

BERLIN- Frances R. Smith was called to her heavenly home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 24, 2019. Fran was the daughter of Raymond and Alice Smith. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Mary A. Smith. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph College and a MALS from Wesleyan University. During her teaching career she taught in Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford and the public schools in Bridgeport and East Hartford. She traveled through Europe, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Israel, and extensively through the United States. After she retired, she cared for her sister for twenty years and spent part of the time in secretarial work for an evangelist until his death. Fran was a member of Christ Community Presbyterian Church in West Hartford. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, formerly known as Porter’s Funeral Home, in Kensington was in charge of the private funeral and burial services at St Mary’s Cemetery in New Britain.

celebrations started in ancient Roman and Egyptian times. This practice evolved over the centuries to be incorporated in the celebration of Christmas in the Germanic areas of Europe. The first recorded display of a decorated Christmas tree was in 1510, in Riga, Latvia (established by Germans in 1210). Christmas trees were decorated with fruit, cookies and candy that would later be shared among family members as gifts.

Santa rode to Main Street with a lift from Squad 4 out of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department. Afterwards, he and Mrs. Claus were available for pictures with fami-

Usually Christmas trees begin life in a nursery where superior seed is planted and grown to two-year-old seedlings. The seedlings are then taken from the nursery beds and replanted in tree plantations. While growing, Christmas trees provide many environmental benefits. They replenish Earth's oxygen supply, serve as wildlife habitat, increase soil stability and provide a valuable and aesthetically pleasing improvement to the land.
