American Embroidery gets Milestone Award
By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen
When Lisa Mariano was running a daycare out of her basement, she found it allconsuming. She had no time to go to doctor’s appointments or to the grocery store or, most importantly, time for her family.
Her husband Enzo was a UPS driver and used to deliver packages to homes that had embroidery shops in their basements and he urged his wife to give that a try. She bought a small machine at first and then a four-head machine and a larger machine as she got more work.
That was 20 years ago. Lisa
Dodds offers tips and advice for would-be writers
By Robert Mayer Special to The
Citizen
For beginning writers, the old cliché is “write what you know.”
Chelsea Dodds agrees. A former Berlin High School student turned English teacher and writer, Dodds spoke to a robust crowd on Oct. 2 at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library,
sharing tips with attendees on how to start stories, novels and memoirs. She billed it as, “Have an idea for a story, novel, or memoir but don’t know where to begin? In this workshop, we’ll examine introductions from published stories and use these as inspiration for your own opening lines, and create rough outlines for the remainder of your story.”
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” she said. “I have done workshops before with 12 people and other ones with just a few people but this was nice to have so many people and have them be really engaged.”
Dodds is a writer and teacher in North Branford. She holds an MFA in fiction from Southern Connecticut State University, and is currently
working on her first novel. Dodds is a two-time Fund for Teachers fellow (2016 and 2023), a 2022 National Endowment for the Humanities summer teacher scholar, and was a runner up in the 2018 NEATE (New England Association of Teachers of English) Teacher-Poet of the Year contest.

What to consider when considering a remodel
By Jeff Jolly
Home renovations can enhance your living space and raise the value of your home, but they also come with many decisions and potential pitfalls. If you’re considering a home renovation, keep these tips in mind:
•Set a realistic budget. Know how much you can spend before you ask for the moon. Remodeling projects are notorious for running over budget. Once the work begins, your contractor may discover problems lurking behind walls and floors. A simple job can become complex due to unforeseen water damage or foundation issues. To accommodate budget creep, set your budget at the low-to-mid range of what you can afford.
Save up for your project. Home remodels can cost tens of thousands of dollars. In our current economy, raw materials are more expensive than ever due to supply chain issues. Plus, interest rates have risen with inflation, adding to the cost of financed projects. You’ll need to be prepared to make a down payment (ranging from 10% to 50% of the total estimated cost) when you sign a contract and progress payments as the work is completed and approved by you. The most cost-effective way to pay for a project is to use savings rather than a loan. Don’t be tempted to use credit cards, which will inflate your total costs unless you pay off the balances on time and in full. If you must finance your project, shop for
an affordable home equity loan. Select a lender with the most attractive interest rates, fees, and repayment terms.
Consider how your plans will impact your home’s resale value. In general, kitchen and bath remodels lead the list of value-add projects. Many other home enhancements provide only a nominal return on investment. – and some can even lessen your home’s resale value. For example, few home buyers are willing to pay a premium for high-end upgrades such as a fancy wine cellar or extravagant landscaping. Installing a pool, particularly in regions that don’t enjoy year-round sunshine, can make your home harder to sell down the road. At the end of the day, it’s not only about the money projects that don’t add to resale value may still be worthwhile if the changes make you happy and you plan to stay put long enough to enjoy them. Just be sure to consider the downstream financial impacts before you make any decisions.
Choose a reputable partner. It’s imperative to find a licensed and insured remodeling contractor who delivers quality work, on time and within budget. Ask people you trust for referrals. Interview multiple contractors and check their references and affiliations with local building associations. Expect written bids with detailed project cost estimates. Make sure you know who is responsible for obtaining and paying for local inspections and permits. The contract you sign should specify agreed-upon materials and describe the process for
change orders and other contingencies.
Keep good records. Maintain a paper trail to account for project expenses. Provide your tax preparer with receipts for energy efficient home improvements that may qualify for tax credits. Get receipts for all payments to your contractor, whether made by check, credit card, or cash. Organize receipts, warranties, and manuals in an electronic or physical folder. These can come in handy for maintenance and repairs.
They also help justify a higher asking price when you put your house on the market.

For Mayor Mark
Editor:
In the fall of 2010, after a long search, my husband Chris and I finally found the perfect piece of property for our horse farm in Berlin. We did not know much about the town other than it was a farming community. At that time there were some restaurants and local businesses in town.
Over the past 8 years there has been a large amount of growth across town, but especially on Farmington Avenue. One can walk the Avenue and find American fare, Italian, Indian, Chinese etc. as well as have the ability to start your day in one of several coffee shops. It has turned into a great walking destination in town.
Even during the pandemic, when many businesses were closing, the Berlin adminis-
Election Letters
Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 7. Between now and then, anyone seeking to submit a letter to the editor regarding an election-related issue or a political endorsement is asked to limit their letters to 200 words.
Any letters that exceed this word limit risk not being published prior to the election. Also, all letters are subject to review for content and appropriatness and can be rejected if determined to not meet the standards set forth for both.
While we will endeavor to print all letters submitted, publication is not guaranteed as it will be dependent on space limitations.
tration under Mayor Mark still had out the welcome mat to new and expanding businesses and said we are open and here to help. Even during this difficult time, Berlin was still growing.
Berlin is a town where you can walk the main road, grab a bite to eat, shop for furniture, jewelry, clothes etc., all while walking in a well maintained and safe environment.
Mayor Mark and the Republican Team are dedicated to continuing to grow the business community in town to offer services to its citizens. This also helps the town by growing its grand list to help keep taxes low.
Vote for Mayor Mark and the Republican team on November 7, where the experience in leadership will continue to provide results.
Sandra Coppola, Town Councilor
For Joann Angelico Stetson
Editor:
A vote for Joann Angelico Stetson as Berlin’s next mayor is a wise investment in the future of this community.
The Democratic candidate for mayor is committed to open government and pledges to address such important issues facing this town as broadening Berlin’s tax base, fostering community conversations with the police department to address local safety concerns, and instituting a community outreach/education program to keep residents informed about crime prevention and safety measures.
A paralegal by profession, she has proven she can work with all members of the community. Joann is a past member of the Board of Education, served on the Town Council, and prior to that,
served concurrently on the Berlin Board of Education and Economic Development Commission.
She’ll take on the important issues facing Berlin – the closing of the East Berlin pool due to under-funding and attracting businesses and companies to town.
Joann’s campaign is built on transparency, communication and collaboration and Berlin residents will do well to give her their vote on Election Day, November 7.

Milestone
On Oct. 3, Mayor Mark Kaczynski, Economic Development Director Chris Edge, and Town Manager Arosha Jayawickrema presented Mariano with a Milestone Award at her store, American Embroidery, on Main Street, a place she has called home for the last four years.
“I knew we were starting to grow and if we were going to grow any larger that we would have to have an actual storefront,” Mariano said. “We moved here and almost immediately our business tripled. We have so much foot traffic and the town has just figured out who and where we are. We are lucky enough to get the accounts for all the fire departments and they tell all the other towns and it’s still all word of mouth. We still have never advertised. All we do is put up our projects on social media and almost every day a new customer will walk in here.”
Edge said these are his favorite things to attend as Economic Development Director.
“Through hard work and a little luck Lisa has made this an anchor here on Main Street and it connects all the other businesses on the street,” Edge said. ”
Kaczynski said this is just another cog in the wheel for a vibrant downtown.
“Stores like this and the ones nextdoor give this a little bit of the downtown feel that we are hoping for here on Main and Farmington Avenue,” Kaczynski said. “We are so happy to have her here and it adds to the restaurants and other stores around the corner on Farmington Avenue and then we have more
apartments coming right around our beautiful train station. It is really coming along and we couldn’t do it without great independent store owners like Lisa.”
Some of her old patrons, who frequent her new store, lament that Mariano’s dogs aren’t sniffing around their feet as they would while picking up orders in her basement.
“It just wasn’t a professional atmosphere,” said Mariano, mother to Lorenzo, Chelsea and Paul, who have all helped in the store at different times. “Like I said we’ve been very lucky to get departments and schools involved in pop up shops and we can turn things around quickly.”
People who know Lisa Mariano know she is pretty low key, so having the Mayor and dignitaries in the store was a nice treat for her.
“It was nice,” she said, with a big smile. “To have the Mayor come and say nice things was very nice. I am very

Eversource tree trimming underway
As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce tree-related power outages across the state, Eversource is addressing trees that threaten electric reliability in 131 communities this year. In Berlin, the energy company is trimming or removing trees along 55 miles of town roads.
“Trees continue to be the primary cause of power outages, especially during a storm, so identifying weak, diseased and hazardous trees along town roads and trimming or removing them before they cause a problem is critical,” said Eversource Director of Vegetation Management Sean Redding.
“While we all love our trees, we have seen firsthand the damage they can cause to
the electric system. Our comprehensive and consistent tree trimming program helps to improve day-to-day reliability during all types of weather and we continue to see fewer power outages where this work has been done – that’s why this work is so vital.”
Tree work is underway and expected to be complete by the end of December. Roads where work is being done include the Berlin Turnpike, Main and Mill Streets, as well as Beckley, Middletown, North Colony, Savage Hill and Worthington Ridge Roads.
The energy company is closely coordinating its plan with community leaders and
communicating with property owners to explain details of the work and their option to keep the wood cut on their property.
As a reminder, all contractors carry proper identification, will never ask to enter a private residence, and there is no cost to the property owner for this work.
Residents with questions about the roadside work can contact the Town of Berlin’s Department of Public Works at 860-8287022 or Eversource arborist John Dyckman at (860) 665-3931. Inquiries about roadside tree work can also be directed to Eversource at (844) 2753302 or by email at treeCT@Eversource.com.

Dodds
From A1
Dodds said it also didn’t hurt that the Fund for Teachers is held at Jackson Hole Wyoming, right next to the Grand Teton National Park. It led her to go back and volunteer each year since then.
Speaking to the group Monday night, Dodds touched on everything from the first line to the first paragraph to the first rise of action in a story. She introduced the group to flash fiction and how it can be separated into three simple phases.
The workshop was interactive as attendees were not afraid to share their first lines and thoughts on a short story read by Dodds, many of whom commented on how the phrase “harvesting of interstellar beings” could have a multitude of meanings.
Dodds has had several short stories published and is working on a novel, which turned into her thesis for school. She urged the writers to look for groups in central Connecticut and compare notes because it is the best way to garner criticism from
others.
When not writing or teaching, she can usually be found hiking or working on her goal of traveling to all 50 states and 63 national parks.
