Pumpkinpalooza kicks off Saturday by Michael DeRienzo Special to The Citizen

Whether it’s trick-or-treating, pumpkin or apple picking, or enjoying some homemade apple cider, there’s no shortage of autumn-in-New England activities in which to participate. BHS students introduced to the world of manufacturing By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen

Students in the Berlin High School Tech Ed classes, as well as others, were invited for a special tour and career conversation with three Berlin manufacturers: Tighitco, Alden Tool, and Sirois Tool. Each manufacturer has a specialty and treated the students and new CTE (Career, Technical Education) teacher, Jeff Carpenter, to a comprehensive tour earlier this month, introducing them to products and services, as well as discussing careers in this

industry. From military products to medical equipment to specialized machining, students learned a variety of new things about CT manufacturing including careers that span engineering, design, production, operations and logistics. BHS partnerships with these businesses have been valuable. “BHS students have not had the opportunity to tour advanced manufacturing businesses in Berlin before now,” said Millie Lemming, workbased learning coordinator at Berlin High School, a newly-created posi-

tion. “This experience was possible because the Berlin Board of Education and Superintendent created a position that would help students gain more authentic learning experiences related to careers in demand.” While the majority of Berlin High School students will attend two- or four-year colleges, this program will allow them to see there are more options other than college. They will see that work is an option right away. “Berlin schools understand the imSee Manufacturing, A6
