Tourney time for BHS football By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen
The Berlin High School football team earned a spot in the CIAC playoffs after a 7-3 season. The squad was set to kick off tournament play against Rockville on the road on Tuesday (a game that ended after press time). Berlin sealed the berth with a solid 26-7 victory over Middletown last week.

work. My dad told me to meet my new boss, his friend from the Lions Club, Earl Wicklund on a side road that wasn’t even a road yet. He was building a development that would be Surrey Lane.
BHS entered Tuesday’s game with history against Rockville, having beaten them in the semi-finals last year in convincing fashion, 42-7. However, the Rams entered Tuesday’s contest with record-setting running back Amir Knighton leading the way. Knighton, a junior, scored 22 touchdowns this season and also had five receiving, two on punt returns, and one on an interception return.

Keep emergency funds within safe reach. When uncertainty strikes, you may need money in a hurry. For this reason, emergency savings should be held in cash or easy-to-access investments like a money market fund. You also may want to open a dedicated interest-bearing savings account, potentially in a bank separate from your other accounts, to keep your emergency funds at a safe distance if you’re one who may be tempted to spend it.

Since Nov. 11 was Veterans Day, Beverly St.Onge, American Legion Post 68-Berlin, Service Officer/Adjutant, shared with the scouts the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Simply put, Memorial Day honors all those veterans who have died, while Veterans Day honors all those veterans who have served, both deceased and living, with special emphasis on “thanking” the living veterans for their service.
Kathleen Carroll (Clinic Manager), Matt Boino, (Certified Prosthetist), and Austin Reed (Certified Prosthetist), all with the Hanger Clinic, gave the Scouts a “hands-on” look at different prosthetics that they custom make and train clients to use. Matt and Austin, each with a prosthetic leg(s), demonstrated running while the Cub Scouts raced against them.

Every June on Flag Day, the American Legion holds a ceremony to properly retire worn out flags.

his passing in 2007. Earl graduated from E.C. Goodwin Technical School where he honed in on his passion for working with wood. He actually made a vinyl record on “How To Hang a Door”. One of his first projects was building a garage for his Mom on Ellis St., in New Britain, that is still standing. He furthered his skills by working with his Uncle, Chester Rochette, Sr., building homes in New Britain. Initially, Earl had a partner for two years, but they decided to part their ways after building the Stockings Brook Road development.
In 1962, Earl H. Wicklund became a corporation. Earl has built over 585 homes, notably Ox Yoke Village, Winesap Road, Chestnut Lane, Cider Mill, Misty Mountain and Vineyard Acres. Earl also dabbled in Commercial Development. He is the owner of Kensington Commons, Park Place, Lower Landing, and Stick Village. Earl did sometimes venture out of town and had a tract of land in East Hampton that he developed, Ridgeview Drive, where a Granddaughter lives in one of the homes.

The Redcoats made it all the way to the championship game last year but were beaten by Notre Dame-West Haven, 35-8. However, entering this year’s tournament there was belief that Berlin had an excellent chance to win a championship, hardened by a tough schedule. Games against Wilton, Windsor and Manchester, all playoff teams, led up to the tournament. Toby Lavender was Berlin’s top offensive threat this year, garnering just short of 1,000 all purpose yards. Jon Jon Morales and Kyle Melville, who has been fighting through a lower leg injury, are two other game-changing players .
