Susan B. Stein
KENSINGTON Barbara (Hall) Orcutt, 97, a Kensington resident most of her life, died at Ledgecrest Healthcare on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023 after a short illness. She lived most of her adult life at her home on Robbins Road, next to “the farm”. She enjoyed her last five years at Arbor Rose. Born in Kensington, she was the daughter of the late Lyman E. Hall and Ruth Graham Hall and was a member of the Ferndale Dairy family. Barbara graduated from Berlin High School and Edgewood Park Jr. College. She was employed by Jones, Raphael & Oulundsen Insurance agency for over twenty five year. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Harding Orcutt, in 1980. Barbara was a lifetime member of the Kensington Congregational Church where she sang in the choir for many years and served on several boards and committees. She was also a member of the Berlin Children’s Fund. Barbara and her husband welcomed many students from foreign countries into their home from CCSU where Robert was a librarian. In 1980 Barbara began sharing her home with many students from CCSU and others. Her connections with those young people led to many deep friendships. Barbara loved spending time with family and friends at her home on Robbins Road. It was the place of many celebrations; holidays, picnics, and time spent having a cup of tea. She was a consummate hostess and everyone was welcome at her table. She enjoyed traveling to see her children and friends and loved nothing better than to sit in her favorite pew
KENSINGTON - Susan B. Stein, 82, of Kensington, widow of the late Robert E. Stein, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023 in the comfort of her own home. Susan was born on November 11, 1941 and was the daughter of the late Nobel and Eleanor (Zimmermann) Benson. Upon graduation from Central Connecticut State College, Sue worked as an elementary school teacher at Elizabeth Green Elementary School in Newington, where she met her future husband. Once her daughter, Laura, was born, Sue took great pleasure in being a stay-athome mother, homemaker, and later assisting with her two cherished grandchildren, Paul and Katie. She found true joy in being a part of their lives. Sue loved to sew and cheer for her beloved UCONN Basketball teams. Being that she was “blessed” with the gift of gab, Sue’s favorite pastime was talking with her friends and family on the phone. Sue was one of the kindest people you could meet and she will be dearly missed. Susan is survived by her daughter, Laura Doherty and her husband George of Southington and her two grandchildren, Paul and Katie Doherty. In addition, she is survived by a sister-
at church and hear her children and grandchildren sing. She is survived by three children; Joy Beynon and her husband Rodney of Grand Junction, CO, Judy Cookson and her partner Rick Theken of Barre, VT and David Orcutt and his partner Peter Trippi of New York City; five grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She also leaves a brother Graham E. Hall of New Britain, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many devoted and much loved friends. She had a very close bond with her great grandson; Declan. A memorial service will be held in 2024 at the Kensington Congregational Church at time to be announced. A private burial will be in West Lane Cemetery. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kensington Congregational Church, Robert & Barbara H. Orcutt Endowment Fund, 312 Percival Ave., Kensington, CT 06037. Condolences may be sent to the family of Barbara Orcutt, Arbor Rose, 975 Corbin Ave. Room 33, New Britain, CT 06052. Please share a memory of Barbara with the family in the online guest book at www. ericksonhansenberlin.com
In Brief in-law Marguerite Benson, niece Kristin Losee (Jenner) and grandniece Claire, brother-in-law Richard Stein and his wife Linda, and cousin-inlaw Janet Edmond. She was predeceased by her brother, Nobel Benson. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Lawrence Giove and the team at Starling Physicians, as well as the staff at Hartford Healthcare Independence at Home, in particular caregivers Sallie and Tina. A service for Susan will be held on Friday, December 15 at 12:30pm at Dellavecchia Funeral Home in Southington, with private burial for the family immediately following in the South Burying Ground in Kensington. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 14 from 4pm to 7pm at Dellavecchia Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Susan’s memory may be made to either the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 74 Batterson Park Rd., Farmington, CT 06032 or to the Hartford Healthcare Independence at Home, 205 Kelsey St. Suite 201, Newington, CT 06111. St. Paul Parish to host Greccio’s 800th Anniversary Special Event St. Paul Parish in Kensington will host Greccio’s 800th Anniversary Special Event on Sunday, Dec. 17, to commemorate the First Live Nativity! On Christmas Eve 1223, in the small village of Greccio, Italy, Saint Francis gathered with his friars and townsfolk in a mountaintop cave to reenact the scene of Jesus’ birth. This event was the beginning of the endearing custom of live Nativity pageants, and eventually Christmas cribs with statues.
The event begins at 4 p.m. with an Outdoor Living Nativity including the Holy Family, live animals, music and more. The Christmas Concert and Pageant begins at 5 p.m. inside the church, followed by a Reception in the Church Hall. Honor Jesus’ birth and the poverty of Bethlehem by bringing a non-perishable food item to our Greccio celebration. Contact St. Paul Parish with any questions at 860-828-0331 or ourchurch@stpaulkensington.org.

that will help improve the safety and reliability of rail service, offer operational flexibility and provide for increased capacity, speed, and efficiencies of rail transportation along the Northeast Corridor,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said in a statement.
The Federal Railroad Administration selected 10 projects across the state for rehabilitation and modernization through the bipartisan infrastructure law that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021.
Gov. Ned Lamont credited the efforts of both the Biden administration and Connecticut’s congressional delegation in securing the transportation funding for a state and region that heavily relies upon rail, especially for commuting.
Amtrak sought greater annual funding from Congress, warning of potential disruptions to services and raising concerns about the need for updating crumbling infrastructure. Some bridges with rail service in Connecticut have needed updates or replacements for years to fix deteriorating conditions.
“This grant fundings helps address a backlog of major projects and improvements
Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, noted that the current bridge was deemed “structurally deficient” in 2006. For the past few years, Courtney and other lawmakers in the state’s delegation have pushed for increasing funding to help with repairing the bridge in his district.
The Devon Bridge, also known as the Washington Bridge, secured $245 million for its replacement project, as well as another $119 mil-
