Gingerbread contest brings out the holiday architects

Adopting a pet for a loved one may seem like a great gift idea, but before doing so, it’s important to consider why the holiday season may not be the right time.

On Tuesday night, Dec. 5, the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department made a presentation to the Berlin Veterans Commission. This makes the ninth year they have donated these gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need.

Berlin Fire Department members Frank Papa, Mathew Sturgeon, and Thomas Bryers, and photographer John Dumin presented the commission with $10,000 in $100 gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need. They raised this money by setting up at the Berlin Fair, having a car show, and having a jeep show.

All the money given by the firefighters stays in town. It

Places of worship highlight community during dark holiday season

Despite this time of year being known for its cheer and joy, many individuals don’t feel the same holiday spirit for many reasons, such as missing loved ones or experiencing sudden changes in their mood due to the weather.

Rev. Alison McCaffrey of First Congregational said that "Quiet Christmas" aims to hold space for grief and remind people they aren't alone.

In order to support those who aren’t feeling cheerful, places of worship throughout the state are hosting various Blue Christmas services to hold space for community members struggling with their mental health.

For example, the First Congregational Church of Cheshire is hosting its annual "Quiet Christmas: For those who grieve and live with loss" on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7:00 p.m. This year's service is hosted in collabo-

What is Blue Christmas?

Interim Minister of the First Congregational of Wallingford, Reverend Meredith Jef-

fers, said that at the heart of Blue Christmas services, such as Cheshire's "Quiet Christmas," is holding space for weariness.

She explained that the traditional Blue Christmas is a Christian church service held, typically on or around Dec. 21, also known as Winter Solstice or "the longest night." She said it was created to support and comfort people struggling during Christmas.

She added that the use of blue is significant because of its common association with feelings of calmness and the Virgin Mary, who is viewed as a gentle figure in many Christian churches.

"It started so that people who weren't feeling all happy, jolly, and joyful had a place where they could go and experience the gentle-

She explained that the congregation has held similar services for members. However, this year's service had an open invitation to the whole Wallingford community. Desan noted many people experience a form of SAD called "subsyndromal SAD" without knowing it. He said that clients experiencing subsyndromal SAD often don't fit within the clinical diagnostic criteria for SAD, so it may not be taken seriously. "[Clients] come into our clinic and they say 'I don't have much energy, I'm withdrawing from activities, I'm not enjoying life. Usually I'm an outgoing, happy person. I just don't feel right…’ People have seasonal problems that are significant," Desan said.

Desan added that it's important to care for the whole person during the holiday season so professional counselors and therapists can be essential resources to discuss other underlying concerns, such as managing grief and developing coping mechanisms for the seasonal depression. It was a "natural extension" from the church's bereavement group, intending to reach a wider audience who may be feeling a breadth of sad emotions during the holiday.

To honor attendee's loved ones, McCaffrey explained that attendees are asked to bring photos of their loved ones who have passed. The photos are then all placed at the church's chancel at the start of the service. In addition, attendees are given knitted prayer shawls made by a group of churchgoers every year.

McCaffrey said their yearly efforts ensure that people don't feel alone while feeling "out of sync with a world and community that seems to be celebrating."

BERLIN Joseph Sambitsky, 76, of Berlin, husband of the late Alice (Nadeau) Sambitsky, and son of the late John Sambitsky and Maryanne Michalski Sambitsky Malawaka, passed away Sunday (December 10, 2023) at Jerome Home in New Britain. A New Britain native and former resident, he lived in Berlin since 1997. Joe served with the U.S Army during the Vietnam War and was employed at the CorbinRusswin division of Emhart Corporation in Berlin for forty-four years, retiring in 2010. He was a member of the former St. Andrews Catholic Church in New Britain.

Surviving is his son, John Sambitsky and his wife Nikki of Kensington; two stepsons, Michael Charette of Cromwell and Paul “Randy” Charette and his wife Alisha of New Haven; a step daughter, Deborah Doos and her husband Mike of Tampa FL; a sister, Cynthia “Cindy” Cyr of Burlington; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Theodore and Violet (Gottlin) Majewski.

Thomas was a long time Berlin resident and was formerly employed for 38 years with the Town of Berlin, before retiring.

Surviving are his daughter, Marlo Matassa and her husband Ryan of Kensington; and two grandchildren, Patrick Matassa and Lily Matassa.

A private graveside service will be held at Maple Cemetery in Berlin.

He leaves his two daughters and sons-inlaw, Lisa and Stanley Mierjewski, Erika and Raymond Zisa, all of Kensington, CT. Who miss him so dearly.

He leaves three grandchildren, who he loved to talk about all their accomplishments, it made him beam. Kaitlyn and Vivaldi Demas of Middletown, CT, James and Linda Wall, and Zakary Zisa, of Kensington, CT. He also loved his precious great-grandchild, Kamden James Demas, and his future brother or sister.

He also leaves, brotherin-law, Gary Riedel, Sr.; and two nephews, Gary Riedel, Jr., and Kevin Riedel and families Arlene and Sam Riedel, Kiera, Meghan Riedel and Marni Schiffres, of Kensington, CT. Bob was a gentle giant, with a huge heart.
