On Tuesday night, Dec. 5, the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department made a presentation to the Berlin Veterans Commission. This makes the ninth year they have donated these gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need. Berlin Fire Department members Frank Papa, Mathew Sturgeon, and Thomas Bryers, and photographer John Dumin presented the commission with $10,000 in $100 gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need. They raised this money by setting up at the Berlin Fair, having a car show, and having a jeep show.

All the money given by the firefighters stays in town. It

Despite this time of year being known for its cheer and joy, many individuals don’t feel the same holiday spirit for many reasons, such as missing loved ones or experiencing sudden changes in their mood due to the weather.

Rev. Alison McCaffrey of First Congregational said that "Quiet Christmas" aims to hold space for grief and remind people they aren't alone.

In order to support those who aren’t feeling cheerful, places of worship throughout the state are hosting various Blue Christmas services to hold space for community members struggling with their mental health. For example, the First Congregational Church of Cheshire is hosting its annual "Quiet Christmas: For those who grieve and live with loss" on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7:00 p.m. This year's service is hosted in collabo-

She explained that the traditional Blue Christmas is a Christian church service held, typically on or around Dec. 21, also known as Winter Solstice or "the longest night." She said it was created to support and comfort people struggling during Christmas. She added that the use of blue is significant because of its common association with feelings of calmness and the Virgin Mary, who is viewed as a gentle figure in many Christian churches. "It started so that people who weren't feeling all happy, jolly, and joyful had a place where they could go and experience the gentle-

A New Britain native and former resident, he lived in Berlin since 1997. Joe served with the U.S Army during the Vietnam War and was employed at the CorbinRusswin division of Emhart Corporation in Berlin for forty-four years, retiring in 2010. He was a member of the former St. Andrews Catholic Church in New Britain.
