‘Girls on the Run’ season kicks off By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
The “Girls on the Run” program has returned to Cheshire with local teams from Doolittle and Chapman elementary schools preparing for the 2022 season and celebrating with an official kick-off held March 7. “We are thrilled to be back,” said Jessica Bell, Girls on the Run executive director, commenting on the program’s return post-COVID. Since its founding in 1996, more than 200,000 girls age 8 to 13 in Canada and the U.S. have participated in Girls on the Run programs. In Con-
necticut, GOTR is based in Hartford with “teams” located throughout Hartford and New Haven counties. The program is designed to empower young girls by teaching them necessary social skills to boost confidence while creating awareness of their own self-worth and ability to make positive changes in the world. The concept is to use a combination of physical activity and positivity to accomplish the goal. Two Girls on the Run programs are offered. One, for girls in grades 3 to 5, is a

As for pizza, I am torn between Rossini’s, Vespucci’s, and Cheshire Pizza. There’s also another newer pizza place in town that people talk about and we plan to try the pizza there, soon, too. I also adore Bello Gio. My friend Bob recommended the place. He always goes with the Italian dishes, while I love the salmon dinner or the filet mignon. The hubby and I call for take-out and what we bring home is enough for another night’s dinner.
On the south-end, for breakfast, Peter’s II Restaurant is it, easily. The place is a huge draw for people in town and from Hamden, too. Making

At Vespucci’s Italian Restaurant, I am mad about the chicken scarpariello. I can’t pronounce the name, but that doesn’t matter. This is sautéed chicken in garlic with hot peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and a killer marsala wine gravy (properly called sauce.) Plated beautifully, this entree is seated on a heavenly pillow of mashed potatoes, and Chef completes the presentation with a crunchy fried onion garnish.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have fallen in love in Cheshire. I’m talking about falling in love with “dishes,” food specialties I can only get at particular restaurants. We’re lucky to have so many choices. For instance, Viron Rondo Osteria is the only place to get “My Mother’s Chips,” a signature appetizer. Those eggplant slices are so delicate and tasty — my mouth waters just thinking about them. Take those with a heaping dish of steamed mussels, pair it with the rustic, artisan bread; that’s a great winter dish. I’m in love with that combination and I can’t get it elsewhere.

There is an over aggressive approach by town government to push their personal agenda concerning the destruction of Cheshire schools. The School Modernization Committee has taken the stand that the schools are in poor condition. Their mission is based upon the age of the buildings and, more recently, the SMC added enrollment numbers in an effort to sell their plan to the public. This committee has even hired private outside firms to reinforce their goals.
Editor :
The new generation plan, as they call it, is falling upon deaf ears for many taxpayers, especially seniors. The reality of the country’s economic condition, supply chain issues, rising energy prices, rising food costs and personal finances play a more important role in daily life than the SMC’s personal goals.
These buildings are sound, safe structures. We all want the best conditions for our students and teachers, but we don’t have to go overboard in order to achieve it. If our schools are that bad our own building inspector would have had something to say about it. What’s wrong with renovation? It’s more cost-effective and accomplishes the same goals. The Cheshire education system has proved itself in state ratings. Knocking down and rebuilding does nothing to change this. In any school the success of the student is in how they are educated and how they apply themselves with the knowledge they’re taught. Let’s concentrate our efforts on the students, by developing new programs in the classroom, instead of putting aesthetics in front of learning. Ray Ilnicki Jr. Cheshire

staffing issues in all grades. Students who participate get classroom experience while being paid. “They are employed by the district but at the same time they’re college students that are getting experiences beyond the field experiences and clinical experiences that they’re getting through their (college) programming to really solidify the fact that they want to be educators,” said Marilu Rochefort, assistant director in the office of educational services at Southern Connecticut State University. SCSU has been partnered with Cheshire Public Schools, but is hoping to expand to other districts. “As time goes on, we’ll see where the needs go and then see how we can continue to be an asset for our students that are participating,” Rochefort said.
of Cheshire Public Schools, said the college students have worked well with students and faculty members.
SCSU, said the program helps the public schools and the university. “Anything we can do to increase the numbers of students interested in education and getting them into that pathway toward being an educator sooner is something that is very much a part of our mission at the College of (Education),” Hegedus said.
The students “resonate really well with our students being young people themselves in the classroom and they have connected well with the teachers in our building as part of the school’s community,” Solan said. Rickqueal Warren, a senior at SCSU participating in the program, said he has had opportunities to experience different roles in the classroom.
Recently, Meriden Public Schools partnered with Wesleyan University to give college students field work opportunities.
“I’ve been the head teacher, I’ve been the assistant teacher, I’ve been able to work one on one with kids in the special education program,” Warren said.
“They do some shadowing for a certain number of hours over a semester,” said Louis Bronk, assistant superintendent for personnel and talent development.
“I just have had very different experiences inside the school system that I wouldn’t have been able to get if it wasn’t for the program.”
“They can be a second set of hands in the classroom to help with small groups.” Jesse Torgerson, assistant professor of letters at Wesleyan, said his class worked with Maloney High School

in Meriden this fall on an initiative focusing on the eastern Roman empire during the Middle Ages. Torgerson’s class used what they learned to create lessons for ninth grade world history classes. “The (Wesleyan) students created a unit that focused on the city of Constantinople by having the students at Maloney imagine a fictional character who is showing up at the city,” Torgerson said. “I had 20 students in my class and they were divided into teaching teams.” The college students worked
with 10 different classes at the high school. Torgerson feels the experience helped “normalize what a college student is” for the high school freshman. “I think when you’re in ninth grade college seems a million miles away,” Torgerson said. “I think the students getting to spend two and a half weeks with some extremely friendly and personable college students from what they know as an elite liberal arts college made a difference.”

‘Girls on the Run’ From A1
blend of physical activity and skill development. Girls meet in small groups – or teams – and as was the case during COVID, connected virtually or in hybrid sessions. The other program is for girls in grades 6 to 8. Cheshire Girls on the Run is at Doolittle and Chapman elementary schools. Doolittle signed on to the Hartford GOTR in 2006. At Doolittle, Kathleen Perez is looking for someone to partner with her in coach-
ing. “This will be my third year coaching and it’s an amazing experience,” Perez said.
ning, “it’s a program for any girl of any ability.”
Kristen Nystrom Mellitt is another Doolittle GOTR coach. “I am so excited to be part of this program that promotes movement and self-confidence among young girls,” she said. Cheshire resident Staci Miller’s two daughters completed the Girls on the Run program, and Miller served as a coach. She emphasizes that the program is not just for girls interested in run-
The length of the program is approximately 10 weeks, with two practices each week and 20 lessons altogether. The physical component can be running, jumping, or skipping, for instance, and GOTR has adapted for differently-abled girls. “We intend to be incredibly accessible for all girls,” Jessica Bell said. Girls on the Run is curriculum-based, Bell pointed out. “It’s not like you come in and we’re going to run a mile today,” she said.
My job doesn’t end when the markets close. RECYCLE YOUR OLD NEWSPAPERS Please & Thank you.
The physical activity portion is left to the individual to determine what she wants to do, whether it’s working on stamina or something else. The lessons in the programming portion touch on GOTR core values. Bell calls them the 5 C’s plus one. The values are confidence, character, care, connections, and competence, followed by contribution.
Past community projects have included park and school clean-ups. “They can create kindness rocks or talk about the environment and create their signs for the whole school to see,” Bell said. “We’ve had a lot of fun when the whole school was involved.” The Girls on the Run season ends with a 5K event, planned for the first weekend in June. Participants run, walk, or roll the course.
Examples of program topics are friendship-building, adult interaction, and respect for others.
Cigna is the GOTR 5K sponsor and hosts the teams at its Bloomfield campus. “It’s an amazing event to celebrate the girls who have been progressing to their goal and finally achieve what they set out to do,” said Bell.
The “plus” is a contribution to the community, in the form of a service project. “Every team has their own project and every team takes ownership of their project,” said Bell.

The brewing process takes timing, patience, and skill, according to the local brew trainees and brewery staff. Starting with grains milled into mash, there’s a cycle of adding water and a cycle of heating and cooling, with an addition of probiotics. Three days later, the beverage is boiled. “We feed it and kill it,” said Labulis, a self-described beer aficionado. As for the gose beer, this style originated in Germany in the 1500s. According to hopculture.com, gose beer was the product of a natural phenomenon found in the local waters of the Gose River in the town of Goslar.

The beer achieved the apex of its popularity in the 1800s in Leipzig, Germany, only to fall into oblivion by the 1960s. The recipe and taste for the beer resurfaced in the U.S. when Lost Nation Brewery in Vermont took up making batches of gose in 2013.
Prepare for power outages with a Generac home standby generator
Filling a small tasting glass of the finished product, DeMeo described the taste as both sour and tart. The newly-created elixir is presented with a healthy, frothy head and pink coloring. DeMeo explained that when making beer, think in terms of flavor profiles. Similar to preparing food, it’s important to consider what goes together in terms of taste, he said. When the custom mixed gose was pronounced done, the team took turns tapping the keg of beer. One barrel, or keg, holds 31 gallons, said DeMeo. “That’s 300 pours,” he said. Collaboration Brew Day is a tool to promote and celebrate women in the alcoholic beverages industry. It’s also a means for the Pink Boots Society, a non-profit organization, to provide scholarships and programming to women going into the field, especially those entering the craft beer industry. According to Frederick, women were brewers before men, and the practice goes back to Biblical times.
The Pink Boots Society website features a quote from Dr. Patrick McGovern, University of Pennsylvania biomolecuThe taste is a salted sour, said lar archeologist, which reads, Frederick, who has been “While men were out huntworking on the promotion ing, women were out gatherand distribution side of brewing the ingredients they ing for a half-dozen years. needed to make other foods and drink to go with the FACEBOOK.COM/ wooly mammoth or RECORDJOURNAL mastodon.”

Ground Water Awareness Week is an annual observance established in 1999 to highlight the responsible development, management, and use of groundwater. Over 44% of the population depends on groundwater as a primary water source, and developing an interest in the groundwater industry is of vital importance to both the health and economy of the country. Here are some ways to protect our groundwater. Go native: Use native plants in your landscape. They look great, and don’t need much water or fertilizer. Also choose grass varieties for your lawn that are adapted for your region’s climate, reducing the need for extensive watering or chemical applications. Reduce chemical use: Use fewer chemicals around your home and yard, and make sure to dispose of
them properly — don’t dump them on the ground! Manage waste: Properly dispose of potentially toxic substances like unused chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paint and motor oil. Many communities host household hazardous waste collections or sites. Don’t let it run: Shut off the water when you brush your teeth, or when shaving, and don’t let it run while waiting for it to get cold. Instead, keep a pitcher of cold water in the fridge. Fix the drip: Check all the faucets, fixtures, toilets and taps in your home for leaks and fix them right away or install water conserving models. Wash smarter: Take a shorter shower and challenge your family members to do the same. Also, make sure to only run full loads in the dish- and clothes-washer. See Ground water, A11

A grand opening for Ball & Socket Those who have been working for years on Cheshire’s Ball & Socket Arts facility have every reason to rejoice now that a date has been set for the grand opening of the project’s first former factory building. There is a lot of history. Until the mid 1990s, the Ball & Socket Manufacturing Company was among the world’s largest manufacturer of metal buttons. At one time it was Cheshire’s largest employer.
landmarks into something viable has been a challenge. In Cheshire, that challenge was met with the intention of turning the Ball & Socket buildings into an arts and cultural center, a decadelong effort that makes the grand opening on May 1 a significant date indeed. “We have been very busy lately,” said Ilona Somogyi, one of the cofounders of the project. “If you recall, this entire project started from scratch. We’ve come a long way, but there is still a lot left to do.”
