WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Local women discuss their careers and inspirations By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the contributions of all women, past and present. Today, The Citizen celebrates four local women, in diverse careers, who illustrate some of the many ways women enrich community life. A proclamation to create a national observance grew from a celebratory week-long event honoring the achievements of women. That was in 1982 and coincided with the United Nations’ See Women, A12

Memorial Day Parade plans are underway The Cheshire Memorial Day Parade is a revered town tradition to honor military veterans who sacrificed all. In 2020, the parade was cancelled due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, while still needing to adhere to crowd control, the Cheshire Memorial Day Parade Committee has announced there will be a special motor vehicle parade through town on Sunday, May 30, starting at 1:30 p.m. There will be no marching units or organizations involved, in order to keep the procession manageable. However, this year’s motor vehicle parade will be extra special as each will be occupied with local

veterans who served our country. The 2021 Cheshire Memorial Day motor vehicle parade of veterans will begin at the Church Green with a brief ceremony and the playing of Taps.
The Veterans Council and the town will be asking all town residents to come out and support our veterans on Memorial Day. Spectators will need to adhere to CDC guidelines. No mass gatherings at any location along the route will be allowed.
Bring your children, grandchildren or neighbors and teach them the importance of honoring our veterans and understanding why we mark the day. “On Memorial Day we remember our fallen heroes and express gratitude so their sacrifice can never be forgotten. We can accomplish this by teaching future generations the reason we live in the Land of the Free is because of the brave,” said Hayley Falk, founder of Because of the Brave and a new member of the Parade Committee.
Memorial Day was originally Decoration Day, an occasion when veterans and others marched in a parade to cemeteries to decorate the graves of soldiers with spring flowers. Decoration Day began after the Civil War and spread across the nation, becoming a national holiday. Later it was extended to honor all U.S. war dead.
Any residents who served and would like to be part of the 2021 Cheshire Memorial Day motor vehicle parade should register with Parade Committee member Leslie Cheshire’s annual Memorial Marinaro. “It is vitally important to keep the tradition of the Cheshire Memorial Day Parade alive and keep the meaning of ‘memorial’ in this sacred day. We are pleased the town, the Cheshire Veterans Council and the Cheshire Memorial Day Parade Committee has come up with a way to do this until we can begin to organize a full parade, hopefully for next year,” said John White, of the Cheshire Veterans Council. He is also the parade marshal.
The Cheshire Police Department will lead and handle navigation of the parade route to stop traffic as needed.

Yet a year later, that is not the case. Under Garrett Sheehan’s leadership and the tireless efforts of past Executive Director Dee Prior-Nesti, Gary Ciarleglio and Maribel Mendez Carrion, the Quinnipiac Chamber has persevered. Through its partnership with the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Quinnipiac Chamber has been able to deliver over 60 webinars in the past year, ranging from how to navigate complex government programs, such as the Paycheck Protection Program, to a recent meeting with Wallingford Town Health Department Director Stephen Civitelli. In this recent call, 25 manufacturers joined to discuss how to facilitate vaccine distribution to thousands of essential workers critical to the supply chain and regional economy. See Chamber, A9

sponsored resolution of International Women’s Day on March 8. It was not long after, in March 1987, that Congress proclaimed March as Women’s History Month. Meet the local individuals adding to ranks of inspiring women. Ashley Rendon, of Cheshire, is a financial advisor for Edward Jones.
Automotive technician One job that is definitely male dominated is the automotive field. Rachel Harrington, 19, works as a service technician for Executive Kia in Wallingford. “There aren't a lot of women in this field, I'm the only woman in the service department of where I work. There are more women in automotive than there used to be, but as a final count there aren't that many,” Harrington said, adding that nationwide, women still only make up 9.9% of the service department sector. Harrington became interested in the field during her freshman year of high school. At Wilcox Technical High School, she had the opportunity to consider automotive technology as a career. “The teacher had us pull apart an engine and put it back together. There was something about doing the work and getting my hands dirty that, oddly enough, made me fall in love with it and want to pursue it throughout high school,” said Harrington, who is finalizing her associate degree in automotive technology through Gateway Community College.
Officer Gretchen Ovesny, a patrolman with the Cheshire Police Department, also is a resource officer in the town’s public schools.
Patrol officer Officer Gretchen Ovesny is a patrolman with the Cheshire Police Department. She’s been with the department for 14 years where she began as a dispatcher. Now she works in the patrol division. Ovesny also is assigned as a resource officer in the Cheshire Public Schools. “I love my job. The kids are amazing,” said Ovesny, who has two sons. She has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and also completed an intensive 26 weeks of training at the police academy. She is currently working on her master’s degree. While police work is not a career that has an abundance of women in it, Ovesny said the number of females is increasing every year. “It’s still a low number. About 15 percent of officers are female,” she said, adding that different ranks and duties have differing numbers of women in them. “It’s a lot of hard work and it takes dedication.” Inspiration from mentors were plentiful, according to Ovensy. “I’ve always been surrounded by inspirational women.” She counts her mother, Peggy Weiler, and her grandmother, who was a schoolteacher. Beyond that, Ovensy said five other female officers here in Cheshire and friends in leadership positions elsewhere (not law enforcement), doing what they need to do, all serve to inspire her.
Harrington advises other young women who might be interested in the field to go for it. If that's where their passion lies, they shouldn't hold themselves back, or let others hold them back from doing what they want to do because it’s a “man’s job,” she said. “It’s not a man's job, it's a job,” she said. “A women can do it just as well, if not better. than a man.” Ovesny’s career path took
root with her family connections. A cousin and uncle were in law enforcement and Ovesny found it fascinating. As she got older, she saw what officers did in the community and it appealed to her. “It makes me feel good that I can help in that way, too.”
“It’s really a lot of coaching, education and advising, giving good ideas,” said Rendon. “Sometimes people make decisions without getting all the information they need.”

A wide range of owls to spot By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
A naturalist and birder for more than 20 years, Nichol has traveled extensively looking for owls, and regularly hosts birdwatching tour groups throughout the U.S. and beyond. “I love owls and I have a sneaking suspicion that most of you here feel the same way, she said to the audience in the hour-long presentation, held Feb. 23. “They are just amazing creatures and I have had the good fortune of seeing many, many owls in my travels,” she said. Nichol first got hooked on owls when she was at the Audubon Center in Green-

One of the most beloved species of bird may very well be owls and that popularity was apparent as close to 60 people attended the Cheshire Public Library’s recent program, “Looking for Owls,” with Gina Nichol of Sunrise Birding LLC.

wich. Her first week on the job, the center got a call about an owl’s nest that had fallen out of a tree at the estate of Diana Ross. It turned out to be a great horned owl nest. This is a common problem, explained Nichol. Great horned owls do not make their own nests and they do not repair the old nests they use. Consequently, it is not unusual for the nest, and the babies in it, to fall, she said.
When Nichol and her team showed up, there were three chicks on the ground. A bushel basket was the answer. The chicks were tucked back into the nest, then put into the bushel basket, and hoisted up and placed in the tree where the parents took over again. Owls are spectacular creatures, said Nichol. They are top predators, found on all the continents of the world See Owls, A15

except Antarctica. More than 250 species of owl can be found throughout the world with about 20 species in America. They come in all shapes and sizes, from as small as a human fist and smaller, all the way to owls more than two feet tall with six-foot wingspans. One of the largest owls in Africa is called the Burroughs eagle owl, extraordinary in that it has pink eyelids.
The owl, although almost two feet tall, was well camouflaged, tucking himself into the tree.
There was an incursion of barred owls in 2018 on the shoreline. These owls are here all year and they breed here. Even in winter, with
their gray-brown coloring that resembles tree bark, they blend in well with their surroundings. To find owls in the wild you need ambition, patience, knowledge, fieldcraft and a lot of luck, Nichol said. In Connecticut there are eight species of owl: barred, great horned, barn, snowy, long, and short-eared, saw-whet, and the Eastern screech. Barn owls can be found around the world. Unfortunately, they are rare and endangered in Connecticut, Nichol said. Some breed
here, others migrate. They are strictly nocturnal in the U.S. They have a heartshaped face. The sound a barn owl makes is a “blood curdling” long, harsh scream, said Nichol. Barn owls can be found in marshes, fields and in barns. Look for the Eastern screech owl, a little gray bird, in swamps, parks and suburban neighborhoods. They have a unique “whinny” call. They are hard to see, but they use nest boxes, so if you put one up, you may get a screech owl in your yard.
Great horned owls are relatively common and can be heard at dawn and dusk and sometime in the day. They have a low-pitched hoot. Barred owls like wet areas and mature woods. They are sometimes called the bog owl, Nichol said. They nest in March using cavities in trees or an open nest. “Who cooks for you,” is the barred owl call. Long-eared owls look like a great horned owl, and are quite rare and endangered. See Owls, A20

Great horned owls can be found in North, South and Central America, and there are 20 subspecies of great horned owls. The owls are early nesters and are on their nests now, said Nichol. Chicks hatch in March and will be out of the nest in April.
Nichol has seen snowy owls on several occasions. The species arrives in Connecticut in winter from its northern Arctic breeding grounds. In 2013-14 an incursion of snowy owls created an abundance of owls and they could be found as far south as Bermuda and Florida. It has been a “banner breeding season” the year before, Nichol said.

Finding owls in the wild is quite a difficult feat, said Nichol. Showing a picture of a tree, Nichol relayed the story of a time she went birding with the New Haven Bird Club at Sherwood Island State Park. “I was the first to spot the great horned owl in this tree,” she said. “They named the tree ‘Gina’s tree’ after me.”

Blood drive In the 20 years since Katherine Toce died from aggressive brain cancer at the age of 11, her family has raised thousands of units of lifesaving blood for other hospital patients in need. That remarkable work will continue on Saturday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Cheshire Masonic Temple Lodge, 9 Country Club Road. To date, about 3,800 units of blood have been donated at blood drives in Katherine’s honor. For patients in the emergency room, fighting cancer or facing a life-threatening illness, help can’t wait. Blood donations are essential. Healthy donors are needed now to ensure that patients have lifesaving blood products available for emergency and everyday medical treatments. For being a vital part of the Red Cross mission, all who come to give at this drive will receive an exclusive Tshirt, while supplies last.
Owls From A15
It nests in conifers within a community of long-eared owls. Nichol advises not to get too close. And do not do anything to bother them. She does not use recorded bird calls for that reason. Fieldcraft tips are as follows: Look for owls in the winter when the trees do not have leaves. Focus on what you are doing, be still, do not talk and listen closely. Maximize your awareness. Blend in when you choose your outfit. White is a warning color in the natural world, so wear camouflage or colors that match the scenery. Finally, look in tree cavities and carefully scan trees for any suspect lumps, bumps, colors, or differences. You just might have found an owl.

. . . HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S NOMINEES . . . GARRISON KUNST ALIAH BIRO MALONEY BASKETBALL
WILCOX TECH BASKETBALL
Garrison Kunst and the Maloney Spartans strode into the final week of the regular season at 10-0 in the wake of Friday night’s rivalry win over Platt. Kunst had a big game, scoring 21 points, his most in a single game since he torched the Panthers for 22 on opening night. The 6-foot-4 senior is averaging 12.7 points and just under eight rebounds a game. Cool fact: With a 4.72 GPA, he ranks No. 1 in Maloney’s Class of 2021.
After going 5-7 during the regular season, the Wilcox girls basketball team rolled into the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament led by one of its youngest members. Freshman Aliah Biro not only led the Indians in scoring at 8.6 points a game, she was among the team’s leading rebounders. She hit for 12 points, her single-game high during the regular season, against Kaynor Tech and hit for 11 on three occasions.
JERICK LAGAMAO
NATALIE REEVES
Lyman Hall freshman Jerick Lagamao hit the pool on Feb. 11 for his first varsity swim meet and won the 200-yard IM and 100-yard backstroke. It was the start of a rookie season that has been nothing short of remarkable. In 10 dual meets, Lagamao won 18 of the 20 individual races coach Donna Neary put him in. Not only that, he registered at least one win in every event – all four freestyles, the IM and the three speciality strokes.
Soon enough, Natalie Reeves will leave Southington behind for Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu. For now, she’s in gymnastics paradise, enjoying a dominant senior season in which she’s won the all-around in every meet in which she’s competed. Her highlights have included a 9.2 on beam and two 9.0’s on floor. Reeves is the favorite to win the allaround this Sunday at the Central Connecticut Conference championships.
NIKLAS VASILJEVS
JA’LEXIA WEST
If you’re going for a milestone win, you gotta go big. Niklas Vasiljevs and the Cheshire hockey team did just that Monday, beating Branford 7-5 to chalk up the 550th victory in program history. Vasiljevs, just as he has since his sophomore year, led the Rams on offense. The senior captain was involved in all but one goal Monday, enjoying a 2-goal, 4-assist afternoon. That put Vasiljevs at 5 goals and 10 assists on the season.
Platt’s Lady Panthers chalked up two wins inside of the 24 hours last weekend, with Ja’lexia West punching the clock with authority on both occasions. The senior forward scored six points and helped Platt control the interior in Friday night’s 30-22 win at Maloney, then turned around Saturday afternoon and registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 38-32 win over Rocky Hill. She’s averaging 10.0 ppg.
