The instructor, Tia Mandrozos, is a lifelong meditator. She is the epitome of chillaxed. She has this great vibe of calm which come across, even on a Zoom call. Tia has been leading guided meditations for group sessions, libraries, and all kinds of organizations for a long time. I really like everything she is saying about the practice of meditation: that it’s free, and anyone can engage in it. She also knows it’s difficult when you first start. Tia says all of us are steeped in the busyness of life. “Our minds have built up so much momentum, it’s hard to get it to slow down,” she said. She told us there are tools, different approaches, to make meditation easier. If we decide to embrace meditation and make it a regular practice, Tia promises our lives will improve, and we’ll live in a different way, becoming calm, centered, and focused. We will learn to live in the present. You know you need this when you leave your coffee cup on top of the car and drive off, or instead of driv-
ing to your kid’s daycare, your mind is elsewhere and you drive right past the exit. Oh boy. For today, the group agrees to use the tool of breath with Zen meditation. I have no clue what that means, but I’m game. Tia has us sit anywhere in our homes where we are comfortable. I am happy to sit at my desk in my chair. If I were on the floor, I fear I wouldn’t be able to get up.

We need to be grounded, Tia said, so our feet should be flat on the floor. We are also asked to sit up tall. On this Zoom, even though everyone has their cameras on, I keep mine off. I’m too self-conscious. It’s just as well. My foot falls asleep and I have to get up and walk about and stomp on it to wake it up. Then the cat comes in and prances on the desk and hubby meanders into the room every few minutes. At some point, the party in the room leaves so I can get serious about this meditation thing. Tia guides us along to close our eyes, and “release our thoughts.” We soften our tightened jaws and furrowed brows, scan the body for any other areas of stress, and get into observing, becoming

I haven’t been sleeping well of late. My mind keeps on working even after the workday ends; the gears continue to chug along. Chug. Chug. Chug.
Anyway, this time around, I decided to take a mini “mental” vacation. I took the Cheshire Public Library class, “Meditation with Tia.” It was all of 45 minutes, but it did the trick!

Not sleeping is just one red flag. Another is looking at my phone every two minutes. I realized it might be time to break away. Not a vacation mind you. Nope. I am not taking a week off to fly to the Florida Keys. We’ve been there though. That was a great time. Did you realize they allow chickens in their restaurants? These chickens weren’t on the menu, they were on the floor and pecking at our feet.

I assure you that I take on the process with the highest degree of passion and integrity, as I have always done in the past. Republicans while some Republicans made some gains, in the end, the overall effort will likely favor Democrats, he said.
“Having the minority voice in Connecticut politics often means their voices, ideas and recommendations get laughed at and don’t get acted upon, and I don’t think that’s fair representation,” Arata said. “I’ve wanted to see it fair for everyone since 2018.” Arata believes in smaller, less intrusive government, decreasing the tax burden
on individuals, families and small business and support for police and education.
Joseph Vollano Vollano owns a fuel and diesel delivery operation in the city and hosts the “Straight Talk” podcast that touches on state, local and national issues and politics. He has been a candidate for City Council and the state legislature and has served on several Republican campaigns. Abercrombie’s margin of victory in 2016 against Vollano, was just 168 votes: 5,273 to 5,105.
“The timing is right,” Vollano said. “Business is taking off and it gives me more time to help the community. The podcast has been successful and a lot of people asked me to run.” Vollano, whose treasurer is Joshua Broekstra, said his priority is controlling taxes, including the gas and diesel tax. CT hiking spots worth the experience By Sammi Bray Special to the Record-Journal
As warm weather approaches, it is time to dust off your hiking gear and hit the trails. Whether you have never hiked before, have young children or are an expert climber, Connecticut has trails for everyone.
For beginners and families Camp Sloper and Crescent Lake in Southington: Both locations have multiple trails for all levels. Hikers can choose a flat course around Sloper Pond or Crescent Lake, or challenge themselves with an uphill climb. Sloper’s trails also connect to the Metacomet Trail, taking passionate hikers on an eight-mile loop past Hubbard Park’s tower.
Take the traditional path or climb up rocky terrain to see Meriden’s Castle Craig.
Appalachian Trail
Ragged Mountain in Kensington
Crescent Lake in Southington
For a great view Castle Craig, Meriden: Take the traditional path or climb rocky terrain to see Meriden’s Castle Craig. Enjoy the views from the top, a well earned reward for an upward hike.
For those looking to take a dip after Wadsworth Falls State Park, Middletown: Drive right up to the falls or take a stroll through beautiful woods. With slight inclines, this trail provides a good workout, but remains family friendly. The Devil’s Hopyard State Park, East Haddam: This trail starts with a beautiful waterfall and small swimming area. There is nearly 1,000 acres to enjoy a picnic, fishing, and camping. Nearby, take a short, fifteen minute drive to see Gillette Castle!
Uphill climb Roaring Brook Falls, Cheshire, and Ragged Mountain, Kensington: If you are looking to progress, check out these trails. Prepare to get dirty and “scramble,” a hiking
term for having to use your hands to climb. Both trails also feature family-friendly paths, that are shorter and flatter. Trails are well marked and easy to navigate.
Day-long journey Appalachian Trail, Kent: For expert hikers looking to spend all-day in the woods, head to Kent. This trail is nearly fifty-miles, but can be made into shorter loops. Get ready to climb and make sure you have water, snacks, and other necessities. Sammi Bray of Southington is a first year student at Trinity College in Hartford. She is studying public policy and law, with a minor in rhetoric, writing and media studies. You can contact her at samWadsworth Falls State Park, Middletown mibray03@gmail.com.

dents of our communities to be your voice at the state Capitol is an honor I will never forget. Together, we advocated for and successfully created positive change both at home and across the state. Together, we put science and our families first when faced with the darkest days of the pandemic.” Abrams has been absent from committee meetings since February. At a Feb. 14 meeting of the Public Health Committee, chairman Rep. Jonathan Steinberg, D-1st, announced that Sen. Saud Anwar, D-3rd, would serve as co-chair for the “time being.”
Thank you for the opportunity to serve and to the countless number of you who helped me serve in this role. I must also thank my family. Without their unwavering support I would never have been able to be a state senator.” Meriden Democrats said last week they were waiting for Abrams to announce her election intentions, but were prepared for any decision. “The 13th district has been very well represented with Mary Abrams in the Senate,” Democratic Town Chairwoman Millie Torres-Ferguson said in an e-mail. “She was well liked across the dis-

decade.
State Rep. Michael Quinn, D-82nd, said he was saddened Abrams would not be running again.
State Rep. Hilda Santiago, D84th, praised Abrams for being a “trailblazer in her own right.”
“She has done an outstanding job representing the 13th district and will be sorely missed in Hartford,” Quinn said in an email. “Her work on behalf of children, both as an educator and a senator, are the legacy that she leaves her district. She deserves our gratitude for a job so very well done.”
Republican Gwen Samuel, an activist for parent and children’s causes, has formed an exploratory committee to gauge interest in a run for the 13th Senate seat, but has not officially entered the race.
“I wish Mary the best in her recovery,” Santiago said. “Mary is so high-spirited and caring and dedicated to her family and friends. Mary will be sorely missed by her colleagues and the Meriden delegation even though she will continue to serve as a senator. She is a wonderful person and a fighter all
Abrams grew up in Meriden, attended St. Rose School and graduated from Maloney High School. She earned both a bachelor and master’s degree in special education, and later a sixthyear degree in education leadership from Southern Connecticut State University. Married for over 35 years, Abrams and her husband, Superior Court Judge James W. Abrams, a former state representative, raised their children, Madeline (Thomas) and Nicholas, in Meriden. Mary Abrams taught special education for over 25 years before transitioning from the classroom to school administration where she served for more than a decade both as the director of special education then as a high school assistant principal until she retired in 2017. “Together, our work in education, the environment, mental health, and health care overall will have positive ramifications for generations to come,” Abrams stated. “Your partnership has meant the world to me.

Republican Len Suzio won the seat in a special election in 2011. Democrat Danté Bartolomeo unseated him in 2012 then lost to him in 2016. Abrams unseated Suzio in 2018 with 52.4% of the vote and was re-elected in 2020 with 52.75%. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255 Twitter: @Cconnbiz

EDITORIAL
Say yes to bells on the trail Custom Homes | Luxury Renovations
An editorial from the Cheshire Herald:
feelings associated with the Linear Trail.
The sound of bells.
As was pointed out by Town Council Chair Tim Slocum, the trail is arguably the most popular public space in Cheshire, as walkers and bikers use it for everything from exercise to nature walks. That’s why it was good news for the town that, of those who responded to the survey, the overwhelming majority reported feeling safe and secure while on the trail.
They are usually associated with the holidays — snowcovered roads navigated by horse-drawn carriages adorned by gold and silver bells. No Dickensian scene would be complete without them. However, Cheshire appears likely to make bells a more year-round sound in the community, especially common on the Farmington Canal Linear Trail.

However, as was explained to the Council, of the 12 or so percent of people who don’t use the trail, concern over interactions between walkers and bikers was the main issue. The perception that bicyclists using the trail may not be as diligent in respecting a certain code of conduct as they could be is very real.

Bells suggested the widespread use of bike bells. It’s an idea that should be endorsed by all. For minimal cost and inconvenience, the bells can provide maximum safety benefits. The majority of people who use the trail, whether employing their shoes or wheels for transportation, are courteous and cognizant of their fellow “travelers.” But there are some who, by refusing to follow basic etiquette, can create, at best, an uncomfortable environment or, at worst, a dangerous situation. All parties using the trail have a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings. Walkers who are unaware of those around them can trigger just as bad of a collision as someone on a bicycle. But the nature of the activities puts the onus on bikers to make sure their presence is announced in as obvious a way as possible. With few exceptions, a bicyclist will be traveling at speeds far exceeding even the most brisk walkers. Bells help to mitigate any issues. They’ll be heard from farther away than someone announcing “On the left,” and provide walkers ample warning of oncoming “traffic.” The bells also shouldn’t
be so noisy as to create an unpleasant environment for those hoping to enjoy a few minutes or even hours appreciating nature. Knowing that the town is taking such action may make the trail more enticing for those concerned about their safety. Right now, the thought of having to keep one’s head on a swivel may discourage some from using Cheshire’s most easily accessible public space. Just knowing that most, if not all bikes using the trail will have bells to announce their proximity is likely to put a lot of people’s minds at ease. Again, the results of the survey show what’s already quite obvious: The vast majority of Cheshire residents are not dissuaded from using the trail by the occasional speedy bicyclist. Venture out to the trail on a nice, sunny day throughout the year, even in the winter, and you’ll find a number of people walking to and fro. The community isn’t desperate to make its trail more popular. Yet, there are probably a number of people who would use the trail more if they felt just a bit more comfortable, and the bells are a way to help make them feel so. How the town gets bells to bikers has yet to be determined, but it seems like an easy fix to a problem.

“Not only are we handing supplies to people which we’re doing, but we’re also giving them hope,” Bucci added.
Schlosser, a resident of Southington, is trying to see the good despite the war and refugee crisis.
The kits, packed and stacked on palettes left Cornerstone’s parking lot on Sunday for a nearby port. According to Bucci, it’ll take nearly seven weeks for the relief kits to be in the hands of those who need them.
“My heart is just so happy right now to see that there are so many people willing to spend their time and help,” Schlosser said. “In times where, everything is just so sad and there’s so much evil, you know, that there’s just so much good still.”
