Spring hopes remain eternal

With schools closed through May 20, CIAC will assess sports prospects on April 23 In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, messages of thanks and hope have sprung up all over town; from big red hearts painted on wooden boards, to magic marker “thanks” written on poster paper, to this masked fellow on Cheshire Street. Holiday parades to be shaped by pandemic Parades are synonymous with Memorial Day, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will likely prevent any large public remembrance of those who died while in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Veterans groups are rethinking how to observe Memorial Day—May 25 this year—in order to adhere to social distancing

CHESHIRE — The window for spring sports is still open. It has, however, grown narrower. With Gov. Ned Lamont announcing last week that Connecticut schools will remain closed through May 20 due to the coronavirus, the CIAC will reconvene on Thursday, April 23 to assess the status of the 2020 spring high school sports season.

”The announcement to extend school closings through May 20th provides a timeline for the CIAC to consider regarding spring sport opportunities,” the CIAC said in a statement released Thursday, April 16. “CIAC administrative staff will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals, and coaches over the next week and half. The CIAC Board of Control will meet on April 23 to review feedback from each group and discuss safe and realistic spring sport experiences.” By April 23, nearly three weeks of the spring season, which was due to start April 4, will have been lost. Without being able to foresee what limitations may still be in place at that time, we unfortunately have to cancel.”

George Messier, Wallingford veteran services officer, said the parade decision in his town will be made by Veterans Services, Public Celebrations and the Mayor’s Office. Meriden’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was postponed to May 16, a decision organizers made a month ago.

Ceremonial wreath-laying and flag-placing at the town’s cemeteries and parks is still scheduled by the American Legion and the Marine Corps.

How to make a cloth mask By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends wearing masks in public places to limit the spread of COVID-19. The masks are an extra step — in addition to social distancing and washing hands. “Masks are not a substitute for social distancing,” said Lea Crown, Meriden health and human services director. “Everyone should still aim to maintain the six foot distance from others, as well as practice other public health prevention efforts such as regular hand washing.” Cloth masks were recommended for general public use, as medical masks are in short supply and should be reserved for healthcare workers and first responders, the CDC said.

“Masks help as they reduce the droplets becoming airborne of the person wearing

the mask, especially those who may cough or sneeze,” said Shane Lockwood, director of public health with the Plainville-Southington Regional Health District. The health district also covers Middlefield.

The masks should be used in any area where social distancing is hard to maintain, like grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas with community-based transmission, the CDC says. “I also continue to urge people to only go to stores for essential items. This is not the time to browse or go to the store because you may be bored at home. If you don’t absolutely need the item, don’t go to the store,” Lockwood said.

Some local residents and businesses have stepped up to help sew masks for others.

Two sisters in Wallingford and Cheshire started making fabric masks recently. The masks have pockets to insert surgical masks or extra fabric and can be washed for reuse.

In Wallingford, Patricia Longobardi is trying to get fabric masks to people in need, nurses in particular, many who are using the fabric masks as an extra layer over medical ones. The masks have a pipe cleaner above the nose, a pocket to insert a filter, and elastic bands to attach to the ears. She started sewing masks about three weeks ago when a friend working at Genesis HealthCare Facility in Wallingford needed them. Longobardi hasn’t stopped making them since and doesn’t have plans to slow down. She hasn’t kept track of how many she’s made, but knows it’s a lot. “I’m working on an order of 100 right now,” she said last week. Longobardi owns a small business called “Sewing by Patricia” and usually tailors dresses for proms and weddings, but since everything was cancelled, she’s had more free time. It also means she has the supplies and skills to spare. Like many homemade mask makers, Longobardi isn’t charging for them. Instead she’s asking for donations to give to the Wallingford Wish-

“I'm naturally a helper, so I wanted to find ways to help during this stressful time,” said Michelle Cucinelli, a Wallingford resident, via Facebook Messenger. “I'm not in health care, although a lot of family is, so I put my sewing skills to use and started making masks once I saw there was such a huge need for them in the community.” Together, Cucinelli and her sister have made about 100 masks to donate and plan to continue until materials run out. “Some masks were donated to Yale New Haven Hospital, some have been distributed to members in the community who have asked, and some will be donated to local first responders,” Cucinelli said. Both women said elastic for ear attachments is the hardest material to come by. Cucinelli said its hard to find locally, and the wait time for shipping materials online is long. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

COVID-19 and the market: What you need to know demics? By Jeff Jolly

Historic market volatility has washed over the globe in recent weeks. The spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has precipitated a record drop in the stock market and a sharp plunge in bond yields, sending the U.S. into its first bear market in over a decade. People around the world are facing a health crisis that’s driving an economic crisis, which, rightfully so, is leading to high levels of anxiety for families and individuals concerned about their wellbeing and financial situation.

Virus outbreaks and stock market performance There is no doubt that this pandemic is different and has caused a larger dislocation than past virus outbreaks. However, it’s still encouraging to note how financial markets have historically rallied following major health crises. Markets have generally delivered positive returns in the six to 12 months following the peak of a virus outbreak.

This isn’t to say that investors should stick their heads in the sand and pretend the downturn isn’t happening—this is a very seriUnfortunately, it's too soon and difficult situation. ous to tell just how long this environment will last. So, what Eventually though, markets can you do to cope with the should return to some level of normal and slowly the market volatility in the meantime? And what can we economy will come back to life. learn from past global pan-

Of course, the past is no guarantee of future results, but historically even the worst markets have seen temporary dips in a general march higher for stocks.

What can you do during this time of volatility? Here are a few steps to consider. Remember the power of diversification: Instead of simply selling your stocks in an attempt to cut your losses, review your portfolio to see if it is properly balanced between stocks, bonds and cash that align with your goals, time horizon and your ability to manage risk. While a diversified portfolio can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can greatly reduce the impact of volatility. Stay focused on your-long term goals: Remember, your investment strategy is based

on your goals, not headlines. While it’s important to be aware of the news related to COVID-19, particularly from a health perspective, be careful not to let your emotions affect your investing. Try to keep your portfolio on a steady course. Volatile periods in the market can create good opportunities to either invest more or to adjust your portfolio as needed. But make sure any investment decisions you make are in the long-term interests of achieving your financial objectives. Revisit your views on risk: There’s nothing like a significant market downturn to remind you that investing involves risk. Market swings provide an opportunity to re-assess the level of risk in your portfolio and determine whether you still think the amount is appropriate for your circumstances. The level of comfort (or discomfort) you feel when the mar-

ket moves up or down substantially is a good starting point on whether your portfolio fits your risk profile. Meet with a financial professional: If you are concerned about the recent performance of the markets, it may be a good time to sit down with your financial advisor. Together you can talk about your financial goals for the future and what steps you can take next to start on the path to achieving them. Jeff Jolly, CFP, is a Private Wealth Advisor and Sr. Vice President with Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. in North Haven. He specializes in fee-based financial planning and asset management strategies and has been in practice for 15 years. Ever wonder how the street where you live got its name? Here in Cheshire, if it’s Atwater or Brubaker, those streets are named for notable persons in the town. Developers, too, often have their say in road names within the new neighborhoods they create and more often than not, when you see a street named Rose or Della, it’s a name that came from their own family. Cheshire’s well-known Cornwall Avenue was once Elm street and Upper Highland Avenue was Milldale Road as late as 1983, according to Mitzi Romano of the Cheshire Historical Society. Country Club, named for the golf club once located there, at one time was known as Powerhouse, said Romano and “the lower part of Wood Pond was Meadowbrook not so long ago,” she said, adding “Google maps still gives both names when telling me to turn there.” The National League of Cities, an advocacy group for cities of all sizes

across the U.S., gives the street names Park, Main, Oak, Maple, Elm and Washington among the 20 most common in U.S. towns. The town of Cheshire has an abundance of tree names, whether they be conifers or deciduous. There’s Oak Avenue, a long north-south stretch through the town; Maple Avenue was a grand street lined with stately homes and maple trees. Many of those trees have been lost to storms or otherwise cut down. The street now serves as a pretty busy thoroughfare. Trucks, buses and cars make the daily trek on the way to Dodd Middle School, the post office and Rt. 10 and beyond. Plenty of other streets, avSee Streets, A21

Spring hopes remain eternal

HANG IN THERE

Recent projections from the state show that peak hospitalizations in New Haven county due to the novel coronavirus may come as soon as the end of this month, but not end until the beginning of July.

In the meantime, spring coaches are staying in touch with their athletes via technology. They are sending out workout regimens and videos on the chance that games will be played. “The message to the spring athletes is to stay mentally and physically ready and, if we get the green light at the end of May, we would be ready to hop right to it,” Dailey said. “The student-athletes and coaches will take every opportunity to compete if we have the option to end beyond the typical spring date.”

“Everyone is preparing like there is going to be a season,” said McKee. “When the season starts, we will be ready to go.” Another point of agreement: scholastic sports won’t resume in Connecticut until it is safe to do so. “I miss watching all of the kids playing in the school and on the field,” Baker said. “I know the athletes want to be out there. The coaches really want to get out there and coach, but everyone understands the situation and the big picture. We all hope to play, but we all understand why we aren’t playing.”

Center for Disease Control instructions for mask-making at home.

An effective cloth mask should fit snug but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction, and be able to be laundered, according to the CDC. dana or otherwise square 20 inch by 20 inch cotton cloth. A coffee filter can be used inside. The masks should be used in any area where social distancing is hard to maintain, like grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas with community-based transmission, the CDC says. “I also continue to urge people to only go to stores for essential items. This is not the time to browse or go to the store because you may be bored at home. If you don’t absolutely need the item, don’t go to the store,” Lockwood said.

ing Well.

COMMENTARY
