A surprise ending in the case of the missing case By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Stumbling upon a long-lost display case in a corner of the Town Hall basement, Laura Brennan knew she found the treasure that had gone missing some years prior, one that many had been searching for. “It looked like a good piece of furniture,” said Brennan, Cheshire’s town clerk, “but it had been covered in dust for years.”

This tree just plain stinks moted as a landscape tree. “They transport easily. They grow quickly, and they bloom early. Those are the three benefits,” she said.
So it is for me and the Callery Pear. There was a time I loved seeing this tree’s prolific blooms all over town. Callery Pears extended along Route 10 and on northward, continuing as it turns into Highland Avenue. The explosion of blooms reached its apex after Cheshire Park. I was overjoyed with happiness with the view. Not so long ago, I learned the awful truth about Callery Pear trees (Pyrus calleryana). A friend of mine, Sigrun Gadwa, a consulting ecologist and wetland soil scientist, makes it quite clear that Callery Pears disrupt biodiversity and “have no benefit.” They’re an ecological disas-
That’s one of the more pernicious qualities of the Callery Pear.
Basically, Callery Pears result in “ecological red zones,” she said.
And they stink, too! Some say the trees smell like fish, or a wet dog — it’s an unpleasant smell anyway you sniff it.
It’s the larval host issue, said Giddings. Follow along if you will. “The caterpillars that eat the leaves of the native trees and are food for birds, don’t have a place if the trees they normally eat aren’t there,” she explained.
If that isn’t enough, the Callery Pear has thorns thick enough to puncture a tire. To give you a better idea of how these trees came to populate and take over native landscapes, listen to Cheshire’s Joanna Giddings. She is a director-at-large for the Wild Ones Mountain Laurel chapter in Connecticut. The Callery Pear is an import from China, going back to the early 1900s. Giddings said, in the 1960s, the Bradford Pear, a cultivar of the Callery Pear, was highly pro-
Since the Callery Pear is not native to North America, our butterflies and moths don’t lay their eggs on the trees. If they don’t lay eggs, they don’t produce caterpillars. That means less food for birds.

“The problem is they are sold as being sterile and advertised as being sterile and therefore not harmful to the environment,” Giddings added. “An individual tree cannot self-fertilize, but it can cross with other pear trees. Then they produce fruit, so they are not sterile after all. The wildlife eats the fruit, they disperse the seeds and the trees start crowding out our native trees.”

Missing case From A1
Beneath the grime was a glass-covered case once housed at the Cheshire Public Library. There it displayed countless interesting collections. According to Cheshire historian and author Ron Gagliardi, the family of Emma Fitch Guilford donated the display case to the town decades ago. Then one day, it “abruptly went missing,” he said. Apparently, no one knew where the case went, or why it was removed. And after a time, it was all but forgotten. But thanks to Brennan’s basement find in 2020, the display case is back and looking better than ever. The piece has been refurbished Local historian Ron Gagliardi, Town Clerk Laura Brennan and the long-lost display case, at Town Hall. Cheshire Academy students helped with removal of the invasive plant (Alliaria petiolate) as part of the school’s overall Earth Day observance. The students, and teachers Kaity Mehleisen and Jay Mis, visited the Quinnipiac Valley Audubon Society property on April 20 to learn about invasive plants; how to identify and remove them. Also, Riverbound Farm president Loretta Victor and vice-president Eric Eichorn talked about how invasive plants disrupt biodiversity and harm ecosystems.

Berlin councilor joins 83rd district race By Nicole Zappone Record-Journal staff
Jack Fazzino said after completing law school in 2020, his priority was to return home and give back. And he’s doing it through public service. Fazzino earned a spot on Berlin’s Town Council last November. Now the 27-yearold is eyeing the 83rd House district seat currently held by state Rep. Catherine Abercrombie, a fellow Democrat, who is not seeking reelection.
Fazzino, the third candidate to register a campaign committee with the State Elections Enforcement Commission in the race, said last Thursday he planned to immediately begin knocking on doors in the 83rd, which includes parts of Berlin and Meriden and, after recent redistricting, will also include part of Cheshire. “I am who I am today because of where I grew up,” said Fazzino, an attorney with the law firm of Cohen and Wolf P.C. in Bridgeport. “I have directly benefited

Two Meriden Republicans, Lou Arata and Joseph Vollano, are seeking that party’s endorsement in the 83rd.
While at Georgetown, Fazzino interned with U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy’s office and was a clerk for a federal judge. Now, he wants to do his part for his hometown of Berlin, and the broader district.

Drug Take Back
Arata didn’t exactly welcome Fazzino to the race. The Republican indicated that what Fazzino “may lack in life experience” could have led him to align with the Democratic Party, and that time “might perhaps change some of his political views.”
The towns of Cheshire and Wolcott are teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency to help prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands. Residents can dispose of unused and unwanted medications Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Cheshire and Wolcott police stations.
“We will have to see more of what programs he wants to emphasize in his political endeavors,” Arata added. Vollano said he’s looking forward to hearing Fazzino’s positions as well, including his thoughts on the muchtalked about police accountability bill, Critical Race Theory and other hot-button issues. Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome. As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs. The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

The Wallingford Chorus was founded in 1970 to celebrate the Town of Wallingford’s Tercentenary. For over fifty years, the chorus has continuously performed and promoted choral music in central CT. It’s our way of raising spirits and inspiring new thoughts, giving our audience a chance to lose themselves in music as a break from everyday life. We perform two concerts a year, one in December and one in May. Our material varies from singing light repertoires to more complex pieces including selections of multicultural works. Most recently, however, we have performed songs from Broadway, the cinema, and the 60’s. We are a fun group! We want our audiences to have fun with us. Do not be surprised if you come to one of our concerts and you are asked to sing along! Your donation to the great give will go directly to paying our amazing Music Director and Accompanist, and allowing us to purchase new and exciting music to perform for you.

Candidate touts education credentials By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
Democrat Jan Hochadel said her experience working for public school teachers and students makes her a natural advocate to represent the citizens of the 13th Senate district. Hochadel, a Meriden resident, is president of the American Federation of Teachers CT, the second largest teachers union in the state, representing 30,000 members. “I have been an advocate for my children, my students, and my members,” Hochadel said in a campaign press statement. “I’m running for state Senate so I can advocate for everyone in Cheshire, Meriden, Middlefield, and Middletown.” Hochadel approached Meriden Town Chairwoman Millie Torres-Ferguson about becoming a delegate to the upcoming party convention.

“Mary Abrams has been a champion for working families across our state,” Hochadel stated. “She delivered a $15 minimum wage, Paid Family Leave, and helped families across our region recover from the pandemic. I wish her all the best with prayers for her health.”

Hochadel earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Haven and began working for Pfizer in 1984. After 18 years, she began pursuing
teaching degrees and taught science at technical schools across the state. Hochadel’s union involvement led her to become president of the statewide union that represents 30,000 public sector healthcare and education workers. Her experience has brought her face to face with the state legislature while serving on the negotiating team for the state employee bargaining agent coalition. “I know the process of how things happen in the Capitol, and I want to use that experience to hit the ground running to deliver results for families across the 13th district,” she said. “I know the issues, I talk to workers every day about their hardships and what the state could do to make their lives a little easier.”

The Town of Cheshire will soon provide a container at 1304 Waterbury Road (adjacent to the Town Garage) for disposal of residential grass clippings and leaves. There is no charge. Disposal by commercial operations is not permitted. The container will be accessible Mondays, beginning May 2, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., through Oct. 31 (excluding holidays).
Cheshire’s Public Works Department is in the process of sweeping town roads. Residents can assist the effort by sweeping sediment from sidewalks into gutters and moving parked cars, which will interfere with sweeping operations.
Chesprocott Health District will provide blood pressure readings Friday, April 29, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at 1247 Highland Ave. To schedule an appointment, call 203-272-2761.
Renters Rebate State law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room or living in cooperative housing, or a mobile home may be eligible for this program. Rebates can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons. Applications accepted through Oct. 1. For more information, call 203-272-8030.
Former Middletown City Councilor Todd Berch said Hochadel won’t experience much of a learning curve in the Capitol. “After we elect Jan she won’t have to spend any
time getting up to speed,” Berch stated in the same release. “She knows exactly what it takes to get bills passed and increase funding for our communities.” Samuel feared Hochadal’s union interests could conflict with her role representing students and families, and criticized some union policies as being “not good for children.” “As she makes her best effort to communicate her message to the 13th district, Jan must keep in mind that if she wins she has to care just
as much about every constituent in the 13th district as she does as a union leader whose mission is to protect union members. I do feel this will provide a challenge for her,” Samuel stated in a text message. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255

BRANDON CAHILL
SHAELYN MURPHY
Heading into the year, coach Bryan McCarty and the Panthers knew they had a top of the rotation pitcher in senior right-hander Brandon Cahill, who was coming off an All-Conference junior campaign. Cahill has not disappointed in ’22. Last Wednesday, he went the distance in a 4-1 win over Farmington, allowing five hits, no earned runs and striking out 12. He beat Bristol Eastern on Monday to improve to 5-0.
We had fun with Maloney high jumper Shaelyn Murphy in our Athlete of the Week video. Given the way she jumps, we don’t put any height beyond her reach. At the moment, her school records stand at 5 feet, 6 inches, both indoor and out. Coming off a Nike Nationals indoor season, Murphy in unbeaten in the spring, including at the R-J Invitational (against the boys!) and at Saturday’s Patriot Games in Coventry.
MATTHEW MORGAN
ALLIE OTTOCHIAN
Fast closing in on win No. 300 in program history, the Southington volleyball Blue Knights stand 7-2 on the season fueled by a balanced attack led by Matthew Morgan. One of three senior captains and a returning All-Conference player, Morgan is a threat in all phases of the game. Friday’s 3-1 victory over Conard provided fresh proof. Morgan chalked up 16 kills with just three errors, 10 digs and five aces.
Sheehan lax is blessed with not just one, but two 100-goal scorers. One week after Jayna MacKenzie reached the career milestone, Allie Ottochian did the same Friday night in Branford. She hit 100 with eight goals in a 1411 victory over the Hornets. Adding an assist, Ottochian notched a nine-point performance for a second straight game. Heading into this week, Ottochian had 24 goals and 17 assists on the season.
RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ
KARISSA SPRING
Let’s set the stage for Friday’s Platt-Maloney baseball battleat Ceppa Field. While Platt Athlete of the Week nominee Brandon Cahill leads the Panthers, the Spartans have been backboned by their candidate, Rafael Rodriguez. The sophomore catcher, who cut his varsity teeth last year as a freshman, was the catalyst in Friday’s 5-3 win over Conard, tagging a two-run double in the first and finishing the day 2-for-3.
Cheshire softball has a spring in its step because it has a Spring in its lineup. Junior pitcher Karissa Spring has played a big role in a six-game winning streak that has Cheshire at 8-2. The Rams won three road games last week. Spring 3-hit Lyman Hall, 1-hit Sheehan, then struck out 12 against Amity. At the plate, Spring went 3-for-4 at Sheehan and 5-for-5 at Amity with six runs scored in the two games combined.

Walk with Me
RISE program
Founded in January 2000, House of Heroes is a nonprofit organization serving our nation’s military and public safety veterans (and their spouses) who are disabled, living on a fixed income, or facing other physical and/or financial challenges.
Walk with Me is a new specialized outpatient treatment track for LGBTQ+ identifying young people age 10 to 25 who are seeking therapeutic, medical, and/or peer support to address their specific needs.
Women-owned business owners can apply for grants and business assistance from Comcast as part of a major expansion of the cable provider’s RISE program.
Volunteers perform minor repairs and make improvements to the homes of veterans and their spouses at no cost to the veteran. For more information, visit hohct.org, or email info@ houseofheroesct.org.
