WONDERS OF WATER
GOP candidate switches from state House race to Senate By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
An outspoken Meriden Republican with a weekly podcast has exited the race for the 83rd House district to run for the 13th Senate seat. Joseph Vollano filed paperwork last week to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Mary Daugherty Abrams — allowing the Republican party to avoid a potential primary in the 83rd House district.
Cheshire Girl Scout Brownie Troop 60279 worked on a Journey project called “Wonders of Water,” where the youngsters learned all about this invaluable resource. The project incorporated research, science and a clean-up of the Mill River at Lock 12. The “Wonders of Water” Journey culminated in a presentation for family and friends at Norton Elementary School on April 22 – Earth Day. Pictured at the presentation are Maddie Yokley, her sister Samantha, Kevin Yokley and Allison Carson. Joy VanderLek, The Citizen

Republican Gwen Samuel, a parent activist from Meriden who had formed an exploratory committee to run in the 13th Senate district, recently withdrew from consideration, according to Meriden Republican Town Chairwoman Elain Cariati. After Samuel’s withdrawal, Cariati said she approached former state Sen. Leonard Suzio to run for his old seat. See Vollano, A4

This season the Cheshire Pollinator Pathway will find
room to bloom in a new space. The native plant initiative, which operates under the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire, entered into

and will now be known as Cheshire Pollinator Pathway at Railroad Avenue. See Garden, A6

In divorce, non-participation a losing proposition By Lisa J. Cappalli
If a judge finds that it is more likely than not that divorced parents would have provided support for their child for college or vocational education if the family remained intact, the judge may issue an “educational support order” to require that support. It isn’t automatic — there are a number of factors for the judge to consider. And there are limits. An educational support order can’t be issued for a child after age 22 and ceases when the child reaches 23. Either it must be issued at the time of the divorce or twenty the judge has to reserve jurisdiction to issue one later. The maximum amount a parent can be forced to pay,
unless the parents agree to more, is based on the cost of in-state full-time attendance at UConn. The law requires that both parents “shall participate in, and agree upon” the school that the child will attend. If they can’t agree, then a judge may decide. A recent case clarifies the participation requirement. The evidence showed the mom sought the dad’s participation throughout the process. For example, she suggested that he arrange college trips with his daughter, told him
of the schools the daughter was considering and where she chose to go, and provided financial aid documents. When the mom sought an educational support order for college expenses, the dad argued that since he hadn’t participated in the decision, he shouldn’t have to pay. The court found that the dad “excluded himself entirely from the college selection process.” He ignored almost all the mom’s messages and never discussed the application process or final college choice with the mom or the
daughter. The court wouldn’t allow the dad to evade responsibility by engaging in a course of conduct that violated his duty to participate in the selection process.

Vollano From A1
Suzio suggested Vollano, who was already a GOP candidate for the 83rd House seat and facing a potential primary battle against fellow Republican Lou Arata. Vollano agreed and filed paperwork for the 13th Senate on April 25. “I think I got him thinking about the impact he can have as a senator,” Suzio said April 27. “Philosophically, we’re alike. We’re both conservatives and he’s also a hard-charging guy. I’m happy to see he’s going to do it.”
“It helps the Republicans out because now there is no primary,” Cariati said. “It’s for the betterment of the party and he’ll do great.” The 13th Senate district covers all of Meriden and Middlefield and parts of Cheshire and Middletown. Once solidly Democratic, the 13th has become a swing district after Suzio took it twice against Democrats in the past 15 years. He lost by a thin margin in 2018 to Abrams, who is not seeking reelection due to an unspecified illness.

This is the second of two native plant gardens for the group on the town’s portion of the trail. The original Cheshire Pollinator Pathway was completed in 2021 and is located on North Brooksvale Avenue,

decline of pollinator and bird populations in the past few years. “The gardens not only benefit enhancing biodiversity, but they have a positive impact on people. These gardens are visually stunning. They’re beautiful,” said Joanna deBear, Pollinator Path-

Garden “We hope to continue what Gary started and keep this garden as a beacon for our pollinators and all that come by to see it.” Richards worked with members of the Petit Family Foundation to establish an official “Michaela’s Garden” in the space. Cheshire Pollinator Pathway has committed to continue that relationship with the foundation. “The new garden will also allow us to provide opportunities for engagement,” said Katie Bateson, Pollinator Pathway stewardship leader. “For instance, we work with students of all ages in various environmental projects. Then there’s Master Gardeners who are working on their certifications and Boy and Girl Scouts, and others, looking for projects or who need community service hours,” Bateson said. “We also
host educational workshops and speakers.” The Cheshire Pollinator Pathway is a grassroots movement, made up of public and private pesticide-free corridors of native plants that provide nutrition and habitat for pollinating insects and birds. Even the smallest green spaces, like flower boxes and curb strips, can be part of a pathway. Eversource aiding local wildlife research With its firm commitment to environmental stewardship, Eversource is partnering with wildlife researchers to study black bears and bobcats living on company land. Berlin-based Eversource protects and maintains tensof-thousands of acres of forested wildlife habitat throughout Connecticut, land that is home to the ani-
mals at the center of the two wildlife research projects being done by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and UConn. “Our environmental stewardship and sustainability efforts are important to us and these partnerships allow scientists to better under-
stand these animals, their habits and how that might affect how we manage this land,” said Eversource Vice President of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs Catherine Finneran.
“Much of Eversource’s land is essentially untouched forest, dense with tree cover and vegetation, so it’s the perfect habitat for black bear,” said Jason Hawley, Wildlife Biologist at DEEP.

STAR CHESHIRE SCIENCE STUDENTS
GROW YOUR BUSINESS
A total of eight Cheshire students took part in the 2022 Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair, where middle and high school-aged participants were asked to devise and construct devices with real-world applications. Suchita Srinivasan, an eighth-grader at Dodd Middle School, and Avery Fowler, a seventh-grader from St. Bridget School, were two of the 16 finalists chosen to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS national competition. Srinivasan’s science fair submission was a domestic violence alert device, and Fowler created a low-cost way to easily identify livestock. Srinivasan is pictured below; Fowler to the left.

RECORD-JOURNAL EDITORIAL
The Ukraine crisis: A couple’s story Every day media coverage, via newspapers, television and the internet, brings Russia’s invasion of Ukraine into household living rooms. Yet the war and the plight of Ukrainians can still seem distant.

A recent Record-Journal story, however, reminds us that the story of the ongoing conflict is also taking place nearby, affecting our neighbors, perhaps directly and intimately.
Then came Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February. Nazar Prudyvus remains in daily contact with his wife via social media and phone. “She makes the food, the masks, the blankets,”

MAX FULLER
MADISON DIPASQUALE
Here’s a guy to keep an eye on once track hits the postseason. Senior Max Fuller was a big part of Lyman Hall’s Class M championship during the indoor season as part of the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Here in the spring, he’s rounding back into form. Fuller clocked in at 11.3 seconds to win the 100 meters in last week’s double-dual sweep of Hamden and Foran, and he’s landed 19 feet in the long jump.
With their team victory at Saturday’s O’Grady Relays in Danbury, the undefeated Lady Titans underscored just how deep and balanced they are. In the throwing events, Sheehan is spurred by the senior tandem of Darla Jagrosse and Madison DiPasquale, who were also teammates in basketball. In Danbury, DiPasquale threw for 82 feet, 4 inches in the javelin and a second-place 113-9 in the discus.
ANDRY GUY
MORGAN PELLETIER
Andre Guy was at home on the big stage. Taking the hill at Dunkin’ Donuts Park Wednesday, the senior right-hander threw five scoreless innings in Sheehan’s 5-2 victory over Law. That made Guy 3-0 on the season. And he’s yet to allow an earned run. This baseball success follows on the heels of a hockey season in which Guy scored 14 goals, assisted on 17 and was a catalyst on power plays and penalty kills.
After undergoing surgery to correct supraventricular tachycardia, an irregularly fast and erratic heartbeat, hitting a softball must seem like a breeze to Maloney sophomore Morgan Pelletier. Her stats show it IS a breeze. The Spartans’ cleanup hitter entered the current week batting .457 with a team-high four home runs and 14 runs batted in after going yard with two RBI on Friday versus Lewis Mills.
NELSON RONDON
SAM ROGERS
Who’s hotter than Nelson Rondon and the Platt baseball team? The Panthers extended their winning streak to five and their record to 9-2 with Friday night’s 4-1 victory over Maloney. Rondon fueled the triumph at Ceppa Field by driving in three of Platt’s four runs with an RBI double in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. The senior catcher also had three hits in a 7-1 victory Wednesday at Bristol Central.
Pick a game, any game, and chances are Southington shortstop Sam Rogers put up stellar numbers. The reigning Class LL state champions are 9-0 so far this season and opponents have found Rogers nigh impossible to get out. After going 4-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI on Friday in South Windsor, the junior is batting .655 on the season with five dingers and 21 RBI in 29 plate appearances.
