Community rallies behind mask-making effort

CIAC: Spring coaches can still work with players

If you thought the Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire was only about flowers, are you in for a pleasant surprise.

CHESHIRE — The CIAC didn’t waste time offering relief to high school coaches who lost the 2020 spring season to the coronavirus pandemic.

SGC members have met town needs and made many contributions to other nonprofits and organizations. Examples include work with Connecticut Hospice to supply arrangements for patients each month and to provide time and materials to senior citizens for an ongoing garden therapy program.

Now there’s a new way SGC is helping in this time of COVID-19. It started in March when club member Susan Dillman began making facemasks to donate to frontline workers.

Coming out of a Thursday, May 7 meeting, its last of the 2019-20 school year, the CIAC Board of Control announced it would ease, for one year only, out-of-season coaching rules.

A mask-making effort by the Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire has generated more than $5,000 for the food pantry.

The waiver applies only to spring coaches.

Through the rest of May, coaches can continue meeting online with their players, as many have been doing throughout the spring, offering instruction, drills, conditioning tips and the like.

Route 70 resurfacing job to begin this Sunday CHESHIRE — There will be lane closures on a section of Route 70 during a milling and resurfacing project expected to start May 17.

The work is scheduled to run through June 5. Crews are expected to be working from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The milling and resurfacing by the state Department of Transportation

will be on a 1.90 mile section of Route 70 from the East Junction of Waterbury Road to Mountain Road.

Lane closures in the area are expected.

“We opened up the ability to coach virtually this spring, but the feeling was that’s not nearly the same thing, and (athletes) haven’t had a chance to be with their teammates. They haven’t had much of any opportunity at all,” said Joel Cookson, the CIAC’s director of media and sports information. “To try to make it so they could have some of those opportunities this summer, pending if the governor says some of that stuff is going to be allowed, that was the direction everybody felt we should go.”

The CIAC Board of Control agreed.

“The feeling was, if we didn’t allow this, there was a chance you might have spring coaches who wouldn’t have direct contact with their kids for 12 months,” said Cookson.

Under normal circumstances, the CIAC does not allow high school coaches to coach or instruct players outside of the high school season.

There are exceptions. For example: if a coach runs a non-school program out of season, such as American Legion baseball, he can have a few of his high school players on the team, though no more than a set number that varies by sport.

There will be no such limit on numbers if spring coaches and players get a chance to gather this summer.

However, there will be restrictions. Technically, any summer practice will be considered a non-school activity. That means they’ll likely have to be held at facilities off school grounds.

Also, participation can not be mandatory.

“You can’t couch it in, ‘OK, this is an official Maloney practice,’” Cookson said by way of example. “It has to be voluntary, for one thing, and non-affiliated with the school. The coach can’t sell it as, ‘This is required if you want to be part of the Maloney baseball team.’”

The CIAC Board of Control last Thursday also eased two other rules because of the pandemic’s interruption of the school year. Both are for one year only. eligibility: When determining eligibility for fall sports, any incomplete grades will be considered a passing grade until the end of the first marking period.

The COVID-19 virus was picking up steam and soon Governor Lamont issued an executive order that people wear masks in public. Dillman realized it “made more sense to give my homemade masks to members of the public so they would not attempt to buy the very limited supply of surgical masks.”

She also gave masks to her friends. It was her friend, Tony Poitras, who suggested she sell the masks to benefit the Cheshire Community Food Pantry, Dillman said.

“It quickly became apparent that with just me sewing it would be impossible to keep up with demand,” said Dillman.

That’s when she asked SGC friends for help. And making the facemasks officially became an SGC project.

Dillman thanks Rhonda Tripodina and Heather Potter for their bountiful donations of fabric—so much so, the group would have run out of fabric weeks ago, Dillman said.

After reading about the facemask project in The Citizen a couple of weeks ago, Helen Richardson contacted Dillman and offered to help. “She has already made about 150,” said Dillman.

One vital piece needed to make the masks is the elastic. “Elastic is virtually impossible to find these days, but thanks to Cheshire Nursery we don’t have to worry about that,” said Dillman. “Cheshire Nursery’s Bill Beebe has generously donated enough elastic to make more than 1,000 masks,” she said.

“We are extremely grateful to Sue Dillman and all of the members of the Suburban Garden Club who have pitched in to make face masks that are so needed at this time," said Executive Director of the Cheshire Community Food Pantry Kerry Walsh.

Cardona: Reopening schools ‘a marathon, not a sprint’

“We still have many phases to go to get to where we want to be, and I just want families to keep in mind that it’s not going to be the same school opening as it was last year,” Cardona told the Record-Journal during an interview on Facebook Live Friday afternoon, May 8.

“There are going to be different things in place to protect you, to protect your children, to protect our teachers and our staff ... understand that it might be staggered schedules, it might be two days on, two days off. It could be that we have students attending some days and other

Cardona, a longtime city resident and former Meriden school administrator, said it’s “inconceivable” that social distancing guidelines could be followed if, for example, all 1,100 students and 150 staff members returned to Maloney High School at once.

“The last thing I want is a spread of infection and we shut it all down again,” Cardona said, emphasizing the decision to reopen is a “public health decision.” A return to normalcy will be a “marathon not a

sprint,” he added.

Plans for reopening Cardona and other members on the Education Committee of the governor’s Reopen Connecticut Advisory Board are discussing criteria and guidelines for schools.

Some of those conversations, Cardona said, have included protective equipment, whether students’ temperature will be checked, changes to school bus capacity, school cleaning and rotating staff in the morning and afternoon to limit the number of people in a building.

“We hope that Cheshire residents will join us in a townwide effort to increase pollinator habitat by planting native plants in their own yards,” Giddings said. “Gardening for wildlife is a great way to teach kids about nature, and work with neighbors to improve our environment.”

Town Director of Parks and Recreation John Gawlak said: “It was a win-win for Cheshire.

While continuing to beautify our areas, the land trust creates and promotes an awareness of the critical need to support pollinating gardens.”

The Cheshire Land Trust maintains properties and trails for use by the public, promotes awareness of environmental issues and the importance of our natural resources.

Currently, the land trust protects forests and farms, wetlands and meadows, and the wildlife and native habitats within, for a total of almost 600 acres of open space in town.

In the north end of town is an oh-so-cute birdhouse. It’s folk art really. It is a little town of birdhouses perched together on top of a tall tree trunk or “snag.” Then there are folks who decorate with water fountains. A tall green water feature on a front porch on Country Club Road has caught my attention for years. I absolutely love it.

Turning another corner in Cheshire, a surprise in the form of a mailbox painted to look like a strawberry. I don’t know if the homeowners are artists, but it is a warm welcome placed at the top of their yard.

Other people put real ponds right in their front yards, right out the front door, like the one I saw off Oak Avenue the other day. Oh! And I happened along in the oldest part of Cheshire and what did I see? A canoe

On my travels, I have also made note of other decorative accents people place in their yards. Driving past Ives Row and Route 70, a side yard features driftwood on a stump. I don’t care what anyone says, that’s art!

Margherita has worked for the probate court system for over 20 years. Her dedication to continuing to provide the vital services our system affords the public, even to her own detriment humbles me and makes me so proud to work with her. Vastly surpassing the issue of being either “essential or non-essential,” her sacrifice shows she is a public servant of the highest caliber and I think she and the many clerks in our probate court system like her deserve recognition.

I know she is not the only clerk in our system to make such sacrifices to serve the public and I am proud to work in a system with such dedicated individuals.

State Attorney General William Tong said that the lawsuit has no merit and that his office will defend the governor’s order.

Lamont fires state public health commissioner

HARTFORD — Gov. Ned Lamont has fired the state’s public health commissioner in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic because of a series of missteps dating to last year, a state official said Tuesday.

The Democratic governor announced Tuesday that he

had replaced Renée Coleman-Mitchell with Deidre Gifford, commissioner of the state Department of Social Services who will also serve as acting public health commissioner. The official announcement did not say why Coleman-Mitchell was replaced.

“Whether you’re in a DMHAS facility or in a hospital, in a health care facility, or nursing home, or corrections facility, we want to have the best data possible regarding the spread and regarding transmission.”

The state will also test all frontline staff at corrections facilities and Department of Mental Health and Addic-

Officials at correctional facilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania found that the outbreaks among their incarcerated populations were much higher than previously thought after they tested inmates en masse.

“The more tests you do, the more positives you’re going to get,” Reiss said. “At the beginning, we were testing 20 people a day, then 60 people a day. And now we have much better data but still, we’re falling way short because we know there are segments of the population, both in congregate facilities and out in the public, that aren’t getting tested.”
