Community rallies behind mask-making effort

CIAC: Spring coaches can still work with players

If you thought the Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire was only about flowers, are you in for a pleasant surprise.

CHESHIRE — The CIAC didn’t waste time offering relief to high school coaches who lost the 2020 spring season to the coronavirus pandemic.

SGC members have met town needs and made many contributions to other nonprofits and organizations. Examples include work with Connecticut Hospice to supply arrangements for patients each month and to provide time and materials to senior citizens for an ongoing garden therapy program. Now there’s a new way SGC is helping in this time of COVID-19. It started in March when club member Susan Dillman began making facemasks to donate to frontline workers. Coming out of a Thursday, May 7 meeting, its last of the 2019-20 school year, the CIAC Board of Control announced it would ease, for one year only, out-of-season coaching rules.

The waiver applies only to spring coaches. Through the rest of May, coaches can continue meeting online with their players, as many have been doing throughout the spring, offering instruction, drills, conditioning tips and the like. See CIAC, A2

Route 70 resurfacing job to begin this Sunday CHESHIRE — There will be lane closures on a section of Route 70 during a milling and resurfacing project expected to start May 17.

The work is scheduled to run through June 5. Crews are expected to be working from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The milling and resurfacing by the state Department of Transportation

will be on a 1.90 mile section of Route 70 from the East Junction of Waterbury Road to Mountain Road. Lane closures in the area are expected.
