Wallingford William Viola, executive director of the Wallingford Senior Center, said the facility he oversees has been gradually bringing back in-person programming and services at that facility since February.

Like other centers around the state, the Wallingford Senior Center fully shut down in March 2020. Viola said a few weeks into that closure, the center’s leaders realized it would likely be long-term.

So they began offering online programs, through Zoom and Facebook Live.

Months later, as restrictions were lifted, the center began offering outdoor activities.

When COVID-19 cases began rising late last fall, the center closed down again. It slowly reopened once vaccinations rolled out.

Last month, the center restarted exercise classes.

“People are happy to come back,” Viola said. “It’s almost feeling normal.”

Viola described the health impact to senior citizens of the social isolation that occurred during the pandemic as being equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes daily.

It had taken an especially significant toll on individuals’ mental health.

“A lot of them were really struggling and really sad,” Viola said.

The center’s staff did what they could to offer to connect with its members, through transportation to medical appointments and through its virtual programming.

“We did as much as we felt we possibly could. At the

same time, nothing beats seeing each other in-person.

People need to socialize.

We’re seeing that finally happening now to a more full extent,” Viola said. “I think we’re all glad to see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

“The great thing really was that we had a lot of seniors embrace technology who didn’t before,” Viola said.

“Some people who were a little tech savvy before, became more so. Some people who didn’t have technology skills before, started during the pandemic — out of desperation to have something.

In June, the center will begin to expand the programs it offers for members, with hopes to be about 95% operational by July 5, said C. Mark White, another commission member.

That lifting also includes reconnecting with instructors to lead the Calendar House’s programming. White described the process as “starting back up.”

He anticipates a return to something that feels “like normal” by September, with the Calendar House serving meals to members in its dining room and planned trips being booked on a regular basis.

“There’s a lot of activities. At full-tilt we were giving over 1,000 rides a month. The pool table room was constantly busy. The cardio room was busy. You had art classes, people doing puzzles. It’s a very active place,” Shupenko said.

As for the past year-plus, “It’s been a very difficult period,” White said. At the height of the pandemic, a year ago, “people really were very scared,” he said.

In Meriden, even with the gradual reopening, Liegl does not expect to see a full return to pre-pandemic level attendance by center members. But he is excited to bring back the opportunity for them to socialize.

“It’s an essential part, the socialization, of anything we do here,” Liegl said. “You’re going to have two different reactions from seniors.

Hundreds attend Pride festival

SOUTHINGTON — Jo Wagner, 19, and Emelia Pettit, 18, said they were proud to see their hometown support them and others like them in a way that had never been done before.

“It’s so cool. It’s so awesome,” said Pettit. “You don’t see this in other towns, you mostly see it in cities. It’s the first sign I’ve ever seen that there might be change.”

Southington hosted its first ever Youth/Family PRIDE Festival at YMCA Camp Sloper on Saturday, part of a two-week celebration of the LGBTQIA community — an abbreviation encompassing a number of non-heterosexual orientations and gender identities. Other events include a drag show and a Sunday service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

“It’s really nice to see Southington come out like this,” Wagner said. “Being able to see the community to come out and say we are here and we aren’t going anywhere is really nice.”

The Saturday event, which sold out, was geared towards families and teens. Events included rock climbing, crafts and field games. A Drag Queen Story Hour featured books like “A Family is a Family is a Family” by Sara O’Leary and “Just Ask” by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Laura Meehan, of Plainville, attended with her family.

“Although it just seems like a fun day, it really does save lives,” Meehan said.

“I’m a teacher and I see with my LGBTQ students, when they feel supported, they’re just healthier.”

Mitchell Oliva, one of the organizers of Southington PRIDE Inc., said 400 tickets were sold and there was a waiting list for the event.

“What is awesome about this day is that it’s really meant to celebrate diversity and inclusion to the kids,” Oliva said. “Today’s goal is to make sure everyone was seen and heard."

The event was free but the Southington Pride Committee accepted donations for local organizations, including the town’s food pantry and a summer reading program. fwilliams@ record-journal.com

The Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire will host its Annual Plant Sale Saturday, June 19 on the green of Cheshire Congregational Church, 111 Church Drive, 7 a.m. to noon (rain or shine).

Perennials dug from club members’ gardens are the focus of the sale. Also, there will be a garden-related tag sale. The Suburban Garden Club is a civic organization and all proceeds from this fundraiser help pay for a yearly scholarship for high school students, and the care of several gardens in town. The group will be performing a 20th anniversary musical tribute to the heroes of 9/11 at the Bushnell in Hartford on Sept. 11, 2021. Rehearsals start Tuesday, June 8, 6:45 to 9 p.m., at the Rev. Msgr. M. Davitt Fox Parish Center, St. Francis Church, 10 Elm St., in Middletown.

How to help your team win, maybe

One thing I will say about my hubby’s preoccupation with sports is his loyalty. His number one sport is baseball and he is a Dodger fan.

True Blue (Dodger Blue) through and through. His love of the Dodgers was inherited from his grandfather who was Dodger Blue true, too.

My hubby is nuts about sports. Let me rephrase that.

My hubby is nuts about watching sports — on TV. What’s funny is hubby’s statement a little while after we married. He assured me, and this is a quote, “At least you will never be a football widow. I only watch baseball.”

Well, before he could get that promise out, I noticed he was watching Wimbledon, college (any college) basketball, the Tour de France, World Cup skiing, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and, of course, the Olympics. He also watched football. It was a gradual build-up, beginning with college football and leading to Miami Dolphins and then every football game, even futbol (soccer).

Ugh. He did get up off the chair and take the kid (not me) to hit a few golf balls at Cheshire Academy of Golf on Highland Avenue or JD’s Golf Driving Range, which was next to Bella Gio on Rt. 70 West. Both of those are long gone. He would also drag the kid and me out to Highland Bowl for duckpin

Another sports fan I talked to, this one a neighbor, says he is not much of a sports fan now, although he followed the Islanders when living in New Jersey. His wife, on the other hand, was a huge men’s Huskies’ fan back in the team’s heyday.

She would have to sit in a certain spot on the couch (because that would help them win) when watching games. When the games got really nail-biting, he said his wife made him sit in one particular spot, too, and he wasn’t allowed to get up (that could be troublesome).

When I think about it, it may have worked. The Huskies did win the national title that year.

Cheshire The Cheshire High School All Night Grad Party will take place at the high school following graduation on June 16. Doors will open at 9 p.m. and the event will end around 5 a.m. the next day.

There will be food, games, entertainment including a hypnotist, and a raffle.
