Lanz nabbed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a 44.65. Ciccone, meanwhile, improved on her seventh-place finish in the 3200 last year with a second-place in 10:48.49, which lowered her own school record. Ciccone was second only to Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert (10:47.04). “This race as really exciting because I just wanted to break 10:50; that was a goal of mine this season, ” Ciccone said. “This is huge. Connecticut is so competitive. Placing in second in the two mile is really exciting.”

CHS sophomore bests tennis field

MILFORD Pitted against the one player who had ever beaten her in a high school match and trailing by one set Cheshire sophomore Alex Orlins rallied to defeat Darien’s Lauren Zhang 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the girls singles final of the CIAC Individual Invitational Tournament on Friday afternoon at Milford Indoor Tennis.

The victory completed a perfect 24-0 season for Orlins.

It also represented a changing of the guard. Zhang had defeated Orlins in the semifinals a year ago when the two were freshmen en route to the 2022 crown.

Both girls were undefeated in their sophomore seasons going into Friday’s rematch. Zhang, the No. 1 seed, was 20-0. Orlins held the No. 2 seed.

Though Orlins dropped the first set, her comeback began there. Down 4-0, she rallied to within 5-4 before falling 6-4. From there, she took the second set and the super-tiebreaker.

It was the second supertiebreaker for Orlins in as many days. In Thursday’s semifinal, also played at Milford Indoor Tennis, Orlins battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 victory over Zhang’s Darien teammate, junior Sarah Donnelly.

The super-tiebreaker was tied at 6-6 when Orlins won four of the final five points.

Eversource: ‘Near-normal’ hurricane season predicted

Press Release

As the 2023 hurricane season begins, Eversource is reminding customers about the importance of preparing and planning for major storms. The changing climate is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather, and the energy company works yearround to strengthen the grid through upgrades, maintenance, and proactive vegetation management to enhance reliability for customers. Atlantic hurricane season lasts through November, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a near-normal season with up to 17 storms having winds above 39 miles-perhour and possibly nine of those storms becoming hurricanes.

“With extreme weather posing a threat to reliability year-round, our team is always ready to respond to whatever Mother Nature brings especially during hurricane season when severe storm systems can be unpredictable,” said Eversource President of Electric Operations in Connecticut Steve Sullivan. “Every day

we’re working to make the electric system more resilient to the changing climate, including installing stronger poles and thicker wires, actively patrolling our circuits and addressing hazardous trees that may threaten the grid while also investing in new, smart technologies that can help shorten the amount of time a home or business is without power. ”

With trees causing more than 90 percent of power outages during storms, trimming and removing hazard trees that threaten overhead electric lines is crucial to providing customers with reliable power in all types of weather. The energy company’s comprehensive yearround tree trimming program is fundamental to

emergency preparedness. This year Eversource is investing $74 million to help reduce storm-related tree damage across Connecticut with work scheduled along more than 4,300 miles of electric lines.

“Collaboration and coordination with others are paramount during storms, and we’re constantly refining our planning and emergency response processes while closely communicating with emergency management and public safety officials and our communities,” Sullivan added. “We’re ready for another hurricane season, and we want to make sure our customers are ready too.”

Eversource offers several simple tips and steps cus-

tomers can take to help prepare for hurricane season at home – before, during and after a storm. The energy company provides a storm safety checklist and encourages customers to always have an emergency plan in place, stock a storm kit with essential items, plan a meeting place for family members and be ready to check on neighbors. Customers

can also download Eversource’s mobile app or sign up for the company’s twoway texting to report and check outages in the event they do occur.

For more information on Eversource ’ s emergency preparedness efforts and restoration process, visit Eversource.com.

by school officials.

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Jeffery Solan was the overall highest wage earner for the 22-23 fiscal year, by a wide margin receiving $228,976. The second highest was recently-retired Police Sergeant Jeffery Falk, who earned $202,968. His base salary was $90,393, supplemented by $44,145 in overtime pay and $46,692 for extra duty for vendors.

This is not unique to Falk, or the Cheshire Police Department, that the additional extra duty and overtime constitutes much of their yearly pay. According to police officials, the opportunity to take overtime and private duty pay is one many officers take advantage of in order to bring in extra money.

Private duty mostly constitutes providing security and managing traffic for businesses usually doing construction or utility work. There are no limits on the

amount of overtime or private duty an officer can take in a year, so long as they’re not working more than 16 hours a day. All the private duty work takes place outside of an officer’s usual hours.

“We’re probably the department in town that has the most access to work overtime and extra duty work, (which) we consider to be two separate things,” Police Chief Niel Dryfe said. Dryfe feels it’s a positive that the officers are so well-compensated, not just for the officers themselves but for the community as a whole.

“It’s a common practice throughout the state. …In a way, I’m glad that an officer coming to work here who needs to make extra money because they’ve got a young family to support or whatever the reason is, doesn’t have to go out and get a part-time job working at a package store or driving an Uber or something like that,” Dryfe said. “I think it’s a benefit to the community to have these officers in town on highly visible traffic posts.

They’re available to respond if we ever had an emergency that required extra officers to respond beyond what we have working our regular patrol shifts.”

One thing Dryfe noted was that the funds officers get from private duty don’t come out of the town’s budget. They’re provided by whoever hires the officers to work at their site. While Chief of Police, Dryfe had lower pay than some officers since he doesn’t have the opportunity to do extra duty work. He was paid $147,153 last year, below 14 other officers on the force.

Education officials are also some of the highest-paid in town. Solan and Assistant Superintendent Marlene Silano were the highest paid among them, with Silano’s salary coming in at $179,510 the seventh highest paid overall in town.

A majority of the others on the list are principals of District schools, with Cheshire High School Principal Mary Joscelyn-Gadd being the highest-paid of that group at

$169,350.

All of the elementary school principals have the exact same salary across all five schools, totaling $159,221. According to Solan, that’s because they’re together in a collective bargaining group that helps set their rate of pay. Solan, Silano, and the district’s Chief Operating Officer Vincent Mascianawho is the third-highest paid amongst school officialsare not part of that group.

According to Solan, between Central Office administrators and the principals, rate of pay is determined based on the responsibilities they’re undertaking alongside the earnings of school officials in nearby towns of comparable size. Though for Solan, his rate of pay is also partially determined by how the district is making progress toward meeting its projected goals.

Based on the work the administrators put in, and the quality of the education in the district, Solan believes their pay is more than fair given the workload of over-

seeing so many students.

“I think the way that the system works designs air market salaries. I can make a great argument for why everybody on that list should be paid more. The market really dictates that though,” said Solan.

Solan earned praise from the Board of Education for his work last year, which led the group to extend his contract through the 2024-25 school year and increasing his pay by 2.75 percent to its current figure.

“It’s not just the education of our children, it’s their welfare, it’s their mental health, it’s their physical well being. You have a tremendous responsibility in that role beyond the education. There’s extensive experience that goes into earning a leadership position. Most of our administrators have taught for many years,” Solan added.

ment, and take the state title. We got two of those things, so this is an amazing feeling right now.”

“This is all I could have hoped for,” added junior Matt Jeffery, who tallied a game-high six goals and added two assists. “We are going to go home and celebrate in the locker room.”

In ending the year with their ninth straight win, the 19-3 Rams went 3-0 against their Southern Connecticut Conference rival from Madison. Overall in states, CHS won every game by double digits and outscored the competition 75-17.

The title game was emotional for head coach Mike Devine, who was a senior player on Cheshire’s last title team in 2010. As coach, he helped the Rams win back the SCC and state crowns this year.

“I can’t put into words what it means to me,” said Devine, who succeeded Rich Pulisciano as head coach in 2020.

“Coach P and this lacrosse family trusted me with this tradition-rich program. We put good people in place and this is the result of all of

that hard work. I’m so happy for this lacrosse program and the community.”

On Sunday, Cheshire never trailed after jumping up 6-0 in the opening quarter.

“Coach (Devine) said, ‘Come out fast and leave them in the dust,’” related Moran. “We came out hot.”

Jeffery set the tone. After junior Ryan Grove won the first two face-offs, Jeffery netted the opening two goals: a wraparound with 10:12 left in the first quarter and, just 46 seconds later, on

a shot from in the middle of the field.

“I had two good opportunities and had to put them away for the team,” explained Jeffery.

With 3:01 remaining in the first quarter, sophomore Sean Grevelding converted on charge through the middle.

Jeffery provided a highlight goal with 2:06 left in the opening frame. With two defenders pressuring him behind the net, he used a spin move to split them and then

fired the ball into the cords.

“Those are the kind of goals you work on in the backyard

moves so you can pull them out in a game.”

Next, at the 1:22 mark of the first quarter, Grevelding found junior Adam Vernon for a goal. Kurtz also found the back of the net with 47 seconds remaining.

Defensively, the Rams didn’t allow the Tigers (15-7) to have good looks early. In the final minute of the first quarter, senior goalkeeper Connor Atwater (7 saves) made a point-blank stop on Hand senior Nicholas Lombardi. Hand finally got on the scoreboard with a goal from senior William Kleine 1:31 into the second quarter, but Jeffery scored to regain the six-goal lead with 9:04 left in the frame.

Sophomore Paul Wable set up the next goal, finding Vernon for a shot into the upper right corner with 4:44 remaining in the second. At the 1:48 mark, Kurtz curled around the net and scored

his second goal.

Just nine seconds later, junior Rocco Botti posted a goal in front of the net. To finish the scoring in the first half, Grevelding converted on a rebound to put the Rams up 11-1.

Cheshire picked up where they left off in the second half, as Vernon scored on a feed from Grevelding with 9:15 left in the third quarter.

Hand snapped Cheshire’s 60 run with a goal by senior Alexander Cushing with 8:54 remaining in the third. However, just 52 seconds later, Vernon took a pass from Jeffery and buried a shot.

With 5:15 left in the third, Jeffery found open space, took a pass from Grevelding and sent the ball into the net. With a 12-goal difference at 14-2, the tally brought on running time for

the rest of the game.

Grevelding extended the lead on a driving shot with 3:05 remaining in the third. Hand junior Chase Docker scored at the 2:12 mark, but Cheshire sophomore Brady Potyrala netted a pass from Kurtz to propel the Rams to a 16-3 advantage going to the fourth quarter.

At 1:03 into the final frame, Jeffery put in his sixth goal and then, with 9:23 remaining, passed to Thompson for the game’s final tally.

From there, Cheshire was able to run out the clock. Defensively, the Rams, coming off a 13-3 semifinal win over Guilford, gave up just three goals for a second straight final four game.

“Our defense earned this win,” stated Kurtz. “Those guys got us the ball and gave us confidence.”

While Jeffery led with eight points, Cheshire used depth to dissect the Tigers defense. Grevelding posted three goals and three assists, while Vernon put in four goals.

Kurtz earned two goals and an assist. The Rams also got goals from Thompson, Potyrala, and Botti.

Grove came up clutch in winning 14 of 24 face-offs.

“It is so hard to defend us,” said Kurtz. “They (Hand) tried to take away Matt (Jeffery) and I. They also tried to play a zone against us, but we weren’t going to be denied today.”
