As quickly as the mélange of trail users appeared, they are gone. All of them. The sun is lower, but the heat is becoming oppressive. I look at my chicken scratch on the log book. I make a mental note to be neater the next session. Aaron and I look at the time and count down the seconds left. It’s been one hour. It is done. This was fun! There were lulls in the counts, as well as some moments of high trail use. We saw cute puppies and babies smiling from strollers, nice people who passed by, nodding hello and some who stopped to talk.

What is that exactly? You know our rail trail, right? It’s the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. It’s part of the East Coast Greenway. In order to gauge who uses this multi-use trail and how it’s being used, there is the CT Trail Census, a statewide multi-use trail user study. Those who keep tabs on it, the CT Greenways Council, the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (Cheshire is a member of that group) and UConn Extension, look for volunteers to record the number of trail users at various times during the season. That’s where I enter the picture.

NEW BRITAIN — Cheshire sprinter Colin Brown followed up his CIAC Class L and State Open championships in the 100-meter dash with a New England crown Saturday at Willow Brook Park.
DePaolo, with a 4-over-par 75, placed fifth in the boys division. Hidalgo, with an 8over-par 80, was one stroke behind co-champions Anna Lemcke of Staples and Libby Dunn of Berlin in the girls competition.
Brown won the 100 dash in 10.85 seconds. That wasn’t a personal best in that event, but Brown did log a PR in placing third in the 200 meters at 22.04.
DePaolo played to par on every hole save four. He birdied the par-4 No. 12, bogied the par-4 Nos. 3 and 6, and double-bogied the par-5 No. 14.

BEAUTIFUL GESTURE
On May 5, a collection of enthusiastic volunteers planted flowers in the hand-built planters sprinkled throughout downtown Meriden on West Main, Colony and Pratt streets and at Red Bridge in South Meriden. If not for the Casertano family of Cheshire, this project wouldn’t have happened. Their donation of full-grown plants in bloom made for the instantaneous beautification of downtown and Red Bridge.

duce bag distribution, Dash and Dine meals, rides to and from the grocery stores, and more. “This program was created in response to the pandemic,” said Stefanie Theroux, coordinator of Senior Services. “It is a comprehensive program that has been developed to prevent and decrease food insecurity among the older adult population throughout the town of Cheshire and is a collaborative effort among many agencies.
“As a result of this program, our older population has increased access to food, therefore decreasing the anxiety connected to food insecurity. Also, during the pandemic, the food delivery system allowed for isolated individuals to remain connected to services. “This program has been a success due to the dedication of the entire Cheshire Senior Center staff and our community partners.” — Press Release

Officials review requests for funds
By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — The city has so far received more than $36.58 million in requests to fund projects with COVID-19 relief funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. That total already surpasses the close to $36.36 million in funding the city is scheduled to receive through the federal program. The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.
